Backdated to Early June

Before the past year or so, Raven had never set foot into a video game store. But with the addition of Jaina to their family and her absolute adoration of video games, But…as Jaina played them, it meant that Chloe wanted to play them, and since Chloe played them, Eloise obviously wanted to be just like her sister and it…

The whole house played games now. This was fine. Of course, only Jett and Jaina played them well...Raven herself tended to enjoy the slower games where you couldn't mess up, couldn’t fall off any race tracks to be fished out by a turtle…couldn’t look stupid.

But, here Raven was in her favorite out of the way store looking over some of the games that seemed as though they’d be more chill.

Chloe was going to be seven in October, and obviously Raven was planning on getting her her own game system for her birthday, but she wanted to see how the child reacted to some of the games on the Switch first but…that meant that she had to purchase those games to figure it out.

Her eyes flickered to the other woman in the store…in the same general area…scoping out the same kinds of games and she thought for a long moment before walking over.

“Hey, this is going to seem like a very out of the blue and maybe even rude question, but you look to be about my age, so are you looking at these games for yourself…or a child or both? And this is me asking for myself who wants to see if my child would have any interest in them before her birthday in October so. Hence the questioning. Also I’m terrible with games that require any level of skill so. I’m hoping to find something chill that I can’t lose with.”

Lyna was a woman on a mission.

She found out that one of her favorite cozy games--or, at least, cozy most of the time--was releasing a physical copy. She had to buy it. Or, at least, preorder it. Either one was fine. Maybe she should have checked the release date before rushing over considering now she was scouring the shelves for something that might not actually exist yet--

No matter.

Maybe there would be a couple of other cool games to check out. It had been a year since the first direct was dedicated to cozy games and surely at least one of them was out by now. Or she could just snatch up an eShop card...

The question caught her by monetary surprise, but Lyna was always cool and collected and that remained with a chipper, "Don't worry!"

For herself and a kid... interesting.

Lyna didn't have a bunch of experience with smalls, but she did know of at least some cozy games with crossover appeal.

"For myself! I love games I can chill with. Have you ever tried this one?" In her hand was a physical copy of Stardew for the Switch, which she held out for the mom and potentially interested gamer to look at. "You tend to a farm-- plants, fish, that kind of thing. Fix it up. Fix up a town. Romance people and get married if you want!"

Raven nodded, and took the game, flipping the box over and reading the summery, feeling rather impressed and a little excited with the idea of playing it. “Yeah! I like that. Not sure how much a seven year old will be able to do but…it sounds good to me…for me.” She laughed and her eyes lit on a very pink game cover with a stylized princess on it, and another with a unicorn and she picked both of them up as well.

“The best part of shopping for her by myself is that she doesn’t ever have to know what’s for her or not for her. My husband either.” Raven winked and looked rather pleased with herself, and as she read the summery of the other two games she had chosen, she nodded, pleased with those choices too. “I think I’ll get these three today. What are you grabbing for yourself…oh, wait the Stardew, was that for you, I didn’t mean to just steal it!”

"I've heard a lot of parent-child duos playing this game together! Sometimes just tending the farm, but kids enjoy the town rebuilding, too." She giggled gently as the other took the game for herself, not minding at all -- that was the point of the suggestion, after all!

"But you'll have fun with it too! I highly recommend it. And no one else has to, either."

The mention of the husband did make her snicker a bit, too--

"No! You can take the Stardew. I have three farms already, actually," she glanced back to the shelves. "I was here to look for a physical copy of a game I already have--Slime Rancher? It's so cute. But I got ahead of myself. Not out yet. The Switch copy comes out in October I believe..."

She tapped her chin.

"So just looking for something to suit the need to purchase serotonin bug, you feel?"

Raven nodded, giving a little laugh and holding the game close for a moment. “I hope that you find the serotonin you’re looking for!” She hesitated and chewed on her lip for a moment before grinning again. “...If you’re looking for some other serotonin inducing thing, do you want to get lunch with me? It’s been a while since I’ve made a new friend, if you’re not interested I totally understand but…”

She shrugged, turning to look at the check out counter. “I’m going to get these without a doubt, and I’d love to pay you back for that. Plus, maybe we could meet up sometimes and play together or something?”

It made sense to her, at least..and the idea of a new friend was…

Utterly fantastic.

She hoped so, too. There were the sensations of sadness she was trying to chase off; dealing with the bank on a near daily basis was a miserable slog she was only trying to get through so she could buy more of these games in the first place--

Her eyes widened slightly in surprise when she was asked to lunch. If it wasn't for the whole children and husband thing, her first instinct might have been that she was asked out. But was she poly, maybe? -- No, just sounded like a friend date. A thanking for a mutual interest. An invite to game. Something hopefully serotonin-inducing.

Huh.

The smile on her face was a little goofy.

"Sure! I'd love to. Do you have a Discord or something? I pay the most attention to that." She got so many spam texts now... "I haven't gone on a," a pause, "well, friend outing in a while, I suppose."

Raven was quiet as she made her purchases, but glanced back to Lyna after she had her card back in her hand, laughing softly at the smile on her face. “Ah, sadly I’m not sure what a Discord is, but I can try to get one, I guess? I have a phone with unlimited texts though, but if you’re more of a talking on the phone person, that works too!”

Raven nodded, feeling a burst of sympathy for the other woman. “Same. With the whole friend outing. So many of my friends tend to keep…ah. Vanishing.”

Purifying, but. Lyna didn’t need to know that. She wasn’t sure if the other woman was involved in things or…

Or even if she wanted to be but…

Oh it would be nice to have a friend in the court again. That…that would be wonderful. “Being an adult sucks sometimes, but. Hey, I’m excited for this, you can tell me all about what Discord is over lunch if you want! Help me get started!”

Wait, this girl wanted to get into more games and wasn't aware of Discord? That hurt. That needed to be resolved.

Plus, then she could talk to this person without worrying about also having to see the infinite amount of spam texts that she was unable to avoid because she kept signing up for things to get discounts, but all of them required her number now to get the best discount, so then she was stuck getting spam messages from them, and no matter how many of them she tried to get herself removed from it seemed like more always appeared--

"It's a messaging app! I use it almost exclusively for chatting with friends," mostly because they were all online, but it sounded like she at least understood that part with the whole R-L friends vanishing thing, "because it's not infested with ads like the same way everything else is--" which included text, "but I still prefer messaging texts over talking on the phone, so we can go with that!"

Lyna was open to talking on the phone later on if this all went well--

"But I can definitely show you how it works. Maybe once you know it, you can get involved in more of the servers. Being an adult feels less lonely when there's at least communities of people online you can sympathize with."

She offered a smile that didn't quite make it to her eyes that time, but it was sincere.

"This will be fun! I'll need your number though." Lyna giggled. "And your name."

“I suppose knowing my name would be rather important if this is going to turn into a friendship.” Laughing, Raven drew out her phone and opened the contacts session before handing it to Lyna. “I’m Raven, it’s really nice to meet you, I wasn’t expecting to find someone fun to talk to in a video game store, and I’ll have to look into this Discord thing too, it sounds neat, and if that’s how you prefer to talk, who am I to deny that!”

If she had issues with it, she was sure that Jaina could help her figure it out. For all she knew the girl used it herself.

“I’ll let you check out, put your number in and send yourself a text and then we can figure out where where we want to eat and what to do next!”

And maybe…she would be able to try to bring the subject around to other things. If not…well. Perhaps Lesath could visit this new friend a little later and see what happened.

Lyna pulled out her phone in a swift motion, taking Raven's in the other. Raven-- that was a fun name. It also gave her some flashbacks to the early aughts and certain terribly notorious fanfictions, but she kept that thought to herself. She liked the name on its own merit. "I'm Lyna! Spelled with a y, because I love my parents, but they cursed me to everyone getting my name wrong all the time."

She had her divorce cases, but do you want a time she had a correct people that no, there was a y there, not an i, was exhausting.

Lyna returned the phone as she slipped to the register, checking out quickly and tucking the game into her purse before pulling her phone back out to send out a message full of cute emojis. Her favorite was that new one with the smile and the watery eyes. That was what she had always meant by the other one--

"I'm not used to this either! I suppose of all places though, a gaming store is a good place to make new local friends. I haven't done the whole local friends thing in a while." Lyna pursed her lips, putting her phone safely away.

"I'm excited! This should be fun!"

Lyna had no real idea what lied ahead, but at the moment, it didn't matter.

Raven grinned and nodded. It woudl be fun, and maybe…depending on how lunch went…well. Maybe she could see about trying to cement this friendship into something a bit more.

Maybe. It would really depend on how things went but…thus far…

She figured that Lyna would be a real fun friend to have, and hopefully…if things did go as she was half wanting them to…

…She would stick around.

Wouldn’t that be fancy.
