The Silent Firework (9) : Fireworks are aplenty this time of year, and there’s always something going off somewhere in the city. Little pops and noises are common, but something about this firework is completely abnormal–it makes absolutely no sound. Instead, light and color splashes across the night sky and leaves a lingering glow behind. No one knows where it came from, but it lit up the sky like a midnight sun, and was gone after about a moment. Anyone who managed to see it in person may find that when they blink, there is a residual glow before them. Strangely, it even seems like there’s a trail of faded, glowing light guiding them somewhere. Maybe you’re led to some special place, or some special person, or–maybe the trail ends before you ever find out where you were supposed to go.
Dari was sitting on the Bones family porch, late one night as he waited for his 'Daddy' to get home from his Nightly Patrol Shift (as a Police Officer. In cat form, he could see and hear the fireworks more acutely and it bothered, so he distracted himself by washing his paw.
As he was sitting there, the Fireworks seemed to be getting closer and closer, and Dari washed more and more vigorously to distract himself. The light shone into a nearby Star Charm sitting on a porch chair.
In a matter of minutes, the fireworks were right over the Bones house - but who in the world were shooting them off? Dari was practically scared out of his wits and was about to jump under the rocking chair, when suddenly the fireworks stopped. He uncovered his head and looked around, puzzled. Then he looked straight forward and right in his face, was a brillant white firework going off with some splashes of color, and it was completely silent!
He blinked and it was gone, leading only a residual glow behind - and strangely enough, it was moving! It almost seemed to be beckoning him to follow it. He twitched his whiskers, perplexed. What was this?
Cautiously, he stepped forward and followed it. It led him to the backyard, and behind the shed, to some bushes. It dipped and pointed to the ground beneath it. It took several moments before Dari realized that the light wanted him to dig something up.
His first attempts, with his own claws didn't go so well - he barely made a few inches - his cat claws weren't made for heavy duty digging, like a dog's are. So, he switched on his Human Glamour to get human hands - an hour should be enough time - if he wasn't seen by Daddy's parents or aunt, or some neighbor, or really anyone that recognized that he technically (at least in Human form) did not belong to the family, in that time. To say that would be a bad thing, would be a gross understatement.
He began to dig with his hands, and at first the dirt was soft and easy to get through, but soon, he found he needed the tool, humans called a shovel. He got one from the shed. With the shovel, he quickly progressed, and made his way down, until his shovel hit a metal box - dented and rusted with age - and also locked.
An hour later, he was in Cat Form, once, (the light had vanished) sitting on Drew's lap, purring. Drew's family was seated around the table, with the metal box in front of them.
"Where did you say that you found this, Drew?" Dad asked frowning. "Actually, Dari found it buried in the backyard. The hole is still there." Drew commented offhandedly. Mom, Dad and Aunt Dia looked suspiciously at Dari and Drew, as if they didn't believe Drew, even though Dari was covered in dirt.
Dani commented, "Well are we going to open it, or are we going to open it?"
Dad frowned and got his hammer ready, and then smashed the padlock on the box. Drew opened the box and pulled out some really old papers. Everyone was excited to find out what they were? Investment Papers? Family Heritage?
Drew was not prepared for what he read. A look of confusion passed over his face, and he must have stiffened for Dari's fur bristled sensing his bonded's tension.
"What is it, Drew?" Aunt Dia, finally asked.
"International... Adoption... papers... for one Claudia Bones, from... one Abdul Bones and wife, Egyptian Citizens... are giving their infant daughter up for adoption to ... Abdul's brother, Jonathon Bones, and his wife, Americans... dated the year, you were born, Aunt Dia..."
There was a shocked silence.
Then a perplexed and saddened Aunt Dia turned to an equally perplexed Dad, and asked, "Did you know about this?"
He whispered, "No. I did not."
"I need some time to think about this." Aunt Dia said quietly and went to her room in silence for the night.
The rest of the family was quiet for the rest of the night, even Dari.
