Quote:
It was already late in the evening but the merchant seemed unfazed by the passing of time. He sat, poised and elegant, watching the world around him. He didn’t seem bored, even as he leaned forward and laced his fingers atop the table; below it, he kept his toe tapping to some silent tune in his head. He was tall, by human standards, though while sitting down he didn’t seem particularly threatening. If you didn’t look at his face.

He had graceful features--sharp and refined. His chin and nose tapered to a point, giving him an air of sophistication, but that, combined with his slitted eyes and pointed teeth, there was something undeniably predatory about him. He watched with a hungry gaze and a mischievous, nearly sinister smile. His ears were pointed and were prominent despite being tucked behind his vibrant, multi-colored hair. The most intrusive feature that indicated there was something not human about him were the curling horns protruding from his temples and the oil-slick black scales that brushed his cheeks and forehead. He was well dressed, in a fashion obviously otherworldly, and seemed to enjoy dressing himself up in glistening gemstones.

His table was somehow both simple and overwhelming; it was draped in a dark purple tablecloth, with extravagant embroidery in different designs. Scattered neatly atop the table was an array of items that seemed to carry some magical weight to them.

He did not seem intimidated in the slightest and, upon noticing that the barrier surrounding him rippled when his visitor entered, he smiled.

He did not rise to meet them nor adjust his position in the slightest. He followed them with his fierce eyes and greeted, in a silky voice, “Welcome.”

Haruhi had seen the strange merchant on nis walks around the Star Festival stuff happening around town. Ne thought it was a nice costume, at first, but something about the man made nem suspicious that there was something more... cosmic, about the fellow, than was really let on.

So it was with a little trepidation that ne approached the table, but also with determination. Ne wasn't going to let this guy get the best of nem, and if it needed to happen, ne could always power up, but ne really, really hoped ne would not need to.

The sound of his silky voice sent a small shiver down Haruhi's spine (not now gay thoughts) and ne smiled warmly.

"Hello," ne said softly, browsing the table, "This all looks very interesting. But something tells me you don't take normal payment, do you?"

“Oh, I think that depends on what you consider ‘normal’ payment. I might take coins if they were interesting enough. But, if we’re being honest, I do prefer to skip over the currency and get right into the good stuff. Financials aren’t exactly my realm of interest. It’s so much to just carry around funds. Exhausting, really.”

He sat up a little straighter and seemed rather interested in his new company.

“I happen to have curated quite the collection. I’m always looking to swap out my goods, though. Is there anything you’re particularly interested in?”

"Normal payment's boring, anyway. And coins can be interesting, sure. Bitcoins aren't though. Screw those things," ne said with a snort, looking over the stuff. There was so much. So many little things, bits and bobs and it really made Haruhi feel like ne was looking upon Ariel's collection of thingamabobs and dinglehoppers and whatever the hell else Scuttle called stuff to give to the poor mermaid with having exactly zero idea of the real use behind any of it. Bratty little seagull.

Nis eyes kept drifting over to one little thing in particular. It was clearly a whittling knife, and something about it just... called out to nem. It was a beautiful piece of work, the steel glinting, the wooden handle smooth and clearly hand carved. God, ne loved it just from looking at it. With a flick of nis eyes towards the merchant, ne carefully picked it up with two fingers, looking it over and turning it in nis grasp. Hmm... It felt both smooth and soft, yet sturdy.

Gingerly, ne placed it back down and dug in nis pockets for the thing that ne'd been carrying around ever since nis first trip through the realm of Mirrorspace. A crystal that had shown up in nis pocket. Ne had no idea how it had gotten in there, but ne didn't want to question it too much. Not when ne wanted this knife very badly—it was just so perfect for nis woodcarving...

"Would you take this?" ne asked seriously, pulling out the gem and showing it off in nis hand, "For that knife I was just looking at?"

Almadel leaned forward curiously, and though he initially gave it a good look over, he reached out to examine the crystal. He held out his hand and waited for Haruhi to offer the gem before he rolled it over in his hand.

He was careful, and treated it with the same gentleness he would have treated any of his other treasures.

“I don’t recognize this. Which is interesting, I’m an expert.”

He held it up to his eye so he could examine it. “It’s pretty. I’m willing to part with the whittling knife, but only for a good trade. It’s magical, you know. Impossible to make a cut you didn’t mean to. I’m sure you can understand why I might want to make sure I’m getting a good deal, too. That’s an impressive tool to have. Tell me, where did you get this? What is it?”

Haruhi's brows went up at the type of the magic in the knife, and ne hummed thoughtfully. Now ne really wanted it. But... To reveal where ne'd gotten the gem would be to reveal to someone that ne was a certain type of magical person nemself, and that was... dangerous.

So ne glanced around, making sure nobody else could've been dropping any eaves first, and then leaned in to say, very quietly, "It happened its way into my pocket. In Mirrorspace."

Then ne leaned back, heart hammering in nis chest, not that ne would ever admit it, and waited for the evaluation.

The merchant’s eyes lit up immediately. “Mirrorspace!” he exclaimed, and looked all the more eager to have this little possession. “Oh, how quaint. Yes, I’ll take it. I love the Dark Mirror Court–do you know, this is the only world I’ve ever found them? It’s so fascinating, like they came out of nowhere. I’ve been in a lot of places, and let me tell you, Earth has so many new things! I don’t think I could ever get tired here. We’ll trade, yes? –Do you know how to wield this crystal? I’ll take it, anyway, I’m just curious.”

Haruhi's brows went up once again. Wield it? It did stuff? Well, how about that. Not that Haruhi cared, because ne could probably find another one easily.

"I didn't know it did anything other than look pretty," ne admitted, picking up the knife and twirling it, sticking it in nis pocket. "But it's yours. Thanks, Hornton."

And ne turned and walked off, humming a bit as ne passed a booth handing out charms and picked one up. It might look good hooked into the handle of the knife.
