The process of changing had taken far longer than Celadonite had expected, and this unknown, unwanted side effect of literally dying from it being too cold...was the last thing that the newly minted Half Youma Captain could have ever wanted or anticipated. The cold was filling him, slowing him and causing the whole world to stretch out, elongate in a way that made absolutely nothing seem real. That made everything seem like a distorted, confusing dream.

And the desire to just drift. To sleep. To stop whatever primal instincts to fight, to survive that his body kept throwing at him was becoming more and more overwhelming. Would it be so very bad to just drift? It was so terribly cold after all…and he was already late for his meeting with Faustite. Late for his meeting with Eion. Late to show off…and now all the male would have would be the letter…which, honestly had been terribly ominous now that he had time to think on it…but.

The idea of actually dying hadn’t ever crossed his mind, yet.

Here he was.

As the cold continued to penetrate all parts of him, he felt a terrible remorse that he hadn’t even gotten to show Faustite what he had done for him. What he had wanted to do for him…but.

He supposed that there was nothing to do about it now.

With one last soft, tired sigh. Celadonite drifted.

Faustite seldom asked much of his subordinates in an official capacity, in the hopes that his demands — when made — would be made irresistible by their rarity. A call in battle for all agents to the tactician's side proved formidable when the gathered army acted as one. In unity, came awe. The meeting he arranged with Celadonite was one such demand, in which he would act on the Sovereigns' desire to see the boy promoted for his work.

Most of his subordinates arrived some minutes before their meeting. But those early minutes passed, and Celadonite would be on time if he showed. Then he would be five minutes late. Then ten. Then fifteen.

When a half hour passed, Faustite was livid. Unyielding heat and flame cracked one of his teacups, partially melted the glass top to his desk, and incinerated some missives. He rose from his seat and paced to escape his own heat, though its relief was fleeting. He considered visiting Destiny City, amassing more of his own quota, cremating any threats that crossed his path.

Then an hour passed from their appointed time. Rage conceded the stage to worry.

Celadonite demonstrated simple carelessness before, as some reclusive behavior had him making hamster clothes instead of attending meetings and participating in missions. He could have lapsed into that same mindset, thus losing track of time. But would that happen, knowing his General expected him that evening? He didn't know, couldn't say.

But he tired of waiting. Celadonite had his chance to show on his own. Now, Faustite summoned him, and it wasn't a request.

Thank goodness for warmth. Celadonite had no idea what had happened, but suddenly, feeling began to spread back to his limbs when he arrived in front of his General, curled up into a small ball with an arm flung in front of his face the iridescent scales reflecting off of the firelight that Faustite emitted.

For a long moment, Celadonite didn’t move. Couldn’t move.

But as the heat began to work through him, his eyes opened, and he searched for the source of the great warmth, and before he could even think, had flung himself at Faustite, giving the most pleased sigh he could muster when the heat flowed through him. It was better than sinking into a hot bath. Better than a cup of cocoa on a snowy day. Better than basking in the sun at the beach.

His eyes closed again, though this time in full contentment as he began to thaw.

How interesting…the warmer he got, the more alive he seemed to feel, and as his heart rate increased once more, and finally, the male looked up and gave a small, fanged grin to his General.

“Ah…surprise.”

Faustite stared at the thing that appeared with utter, untempered confusion. Leaning over, he braced his coal hands on his knees as he looked at the ball before him. Had Celadonite's hair, certainly, but the aura was that of a Captain. Not a normal Captain, either, and the glint of scales confirmed as much. But Celadonite was a Lieutenant — a human one at that.

He summoned Celadonite and no other, and had never known his summons to abscond with the wrong person. This curl of meat on the floor, this deveined shrimp, had to be Celadonite.

Which meant someone promoted him.

Which meant he youmafied, in part, between the last time Faustite saw him and now.

Then the thing-that-has-to-be-Celadonite moved, and sprung up, and encircled him, and Faustite's unwavering first instinct was to separate himself from the clingy creature however he could, for fear that the other one would burn to cinders for touching him. But the scaly Captain seemed unfazed, and had the nerve to —

"Piss off with that!" He spat, words sizzling as they left his tongue. "You and ******** Albite think you're so ******** clever when you don't ******** tell me what bullshit you got yourselves into! First him with his ******** promotion, not answering my ******** summons, showing up out of the ******** blue like he's earned himself a kiss on the cheek instead of a phone to the ******** face," he hissed, then paused for a breath.

As he spoke, he pried at Celadonite's clinging arms. "Then you disappear for a ******** age, make hamster clothes, disappear again, and show up half-dead when I have to pull you to my ******** office. ******** both of you!" He finished with a sigh.

Then he hugged the boy, not only because he was relieved to see Celadonite safe and alive and not purified, but also because the boy deserved to burn.

He didn’t burn. Not anymore. When Faustite hugged him, Celadonite gave a noise of utter relief, drinking in the heat of the flames, and pressing his face against the grumpy, flaming General. “Yeah but…you love us. You love me and the Himbo…and we didn’t do it to upset you, at least I didn’t. I wanted to be with you. To be a youma with you. So I couldn’t ever leave and so you didn’t have to be alone all the time. You deserve that, you know.”

He tried to wriggle closer, his claws beginning to card gently through Faustite’s hair as he relaxed. Everything was speeding up again now that he was warm. What a strange and unexpected side effect.

“To not be alone, I mean. You deserve to have someone like you by your side. And that’s me. I mean. General Amazonite was pretty straight forward with how it was all going to go but, ******** me she’s so cold and…I guess I’m pretty weak to the cold now, which…I’m going to blame those hell rabbits.”

He nipped Fausitite’s neck, pleased with his small fangs and suddenly felt full of energy. Excited to see what he was and what he could do.

“But you. You’re wonderful and I could stay curled up on you forever, General.”

Strange that he didn't hear Celadonite hiss when he touched him. Stranger that he didn't flinch away from the heat. Most would burn in seconds when pressed to his grate, but Cela did not. Rather, he sounded pleased.

Which perplexed Faustite further. What was supposed to be a punishment became an unexpected boon.

Most disconcerting of all was his boy's assertion that this was… A gift to him? Like he deserved anything, least of all to have a companion through the 21 hours that he was on fire. That Celadonite could tolerate the heat supported his claim, but…

"How?" Flame eyes slid to the shining scales, made more brilliant in the firelight. And his boy's eyes —

Whatever Amazonite did, however rabbits came into the picture, this must have been the life that Celadonite chose. He came to Faustite with no compunctions about it, unless his sensitivity to cold was a terrible qualm, but he seemed more glad to be half-youma than any of the others he had met. Glad like Lysithea had been when she left them, like Alkmene had been when he joined them.

Whatever he intended to say next, it was hushed up in a quick draw of breath, in a gooseflesh spread over his body when he felt pinpricks at his neck. Felt a flush for it, for all that it promised.

"You're both nuts in polar ways. But," he stole a prolonged kiss, then buried his face in Cela's shoulder. "Thanks," he murmured.

“Went to Amazonite a few months ago. Made her promise not to tell you. The plan was to have her help me change. Ate a bunch of starseeds in her office. Never had one before this, and honestly not planning on having anymore. I think the final number was twenty four before I started changing…I was averaging about ten an hour so. I didn’t do so bad, I don’t think. She took all of the notes so if you want all of the technical information, I’m sure she’ll tell you…and the reason I kept it secret is because I knew you’d call me stupid and be angry, so it was just better to ask forgiveness.”

He pressed a kiss to the top of the male’s head and sighed softly, running his fingers down Faustite’s back. “...I don’t regret anything. I’ve thought about it a lot. But life as a human isn’t worth a damn if you’re not in it. And I know you hate when you’re alone. And I figure I’m the only one that can do this. I’ve never seen or read anything of a half youma senshi so. It was up to me.”

Not that it was a difficult choice. Not after falling in love with his stupid General.

“Humanity isn’t worth s**t without you so. I don’t need it. And you’re welcome. I love you, dumbass.”

Faustite swallowed what little affront he had for Celadonite disliking starseeds — logically, it was better that he had that experience. Much like the child forced to smoke a carton of cigarettes in one sitting, the overdose to his system would likely revile him to the idea of eating another. Celadonite wouldn't face the same struggles that he had, as someone fed starseeds at a careful, purposeful rate.

Still, he liked the taste. And the crunch. And the thrum of those delicate little souls in his hand. Dismaying that Cela couldn't share that fondness with him.

More dismaying was learning that Cela thought he would call him stupid for choosing to youmafy. For most, it was stupid, for humans were terribly attached to the stagnant society they cultivated for themselves. They wanted their 2.5 kids, their white picket fence, their global warming, their stratified economy, their corporations with more money than entire countries, their mind-numbing addictions and their gentle blinders. That Celadonite chose otherwise was surprising, as it would always be a shock when someone agreed with the path that was given to him. But Celadonite clearly put thought into this choice if it took him months to execute.

So it stung. And Faustite was left holding onto his guttering flame of fury.

Those soft touches to his real body, down his unguarded spine, were so new that they almost hurt. He drew in a breath, and his grip tightened to the point that he had fistfuls of Celadonite's new uniform in hand.

"Won't ever be a half-youma senshi. Youma bear a grudge as old as this war; even Negaverse senshi struggle for any acceptance. Only the Ascended Generals may walk in the Rift alone — that should tell you its impossibility for the rest of the team, and your uniqueness for entering this twilit existence." It was so much to ask of someone, and that he never needed to ask, never thought to ask, and Lie managed it on his own —

"Should've ******** told me," he seethed, voice strained.

"Best you make it up to me, my stupid, brash boy."

“Well, that was my mistake. I should have told you. But I was afraid, and I’m not anymore. Obviously. I’m glad that there won’t ever be half-youma senshi, it really does just mean that I get to be the most special, and I’m quite happy with that outcome but.”

Celadonite leaned closer, tilting Faustite’s chin up and pressing a kiss against his lips. “I should have told you, Faustite. But making it up to you will be my pleasure. You’ll forget how upset you were soon enough, I’m sure of it.”

He still wasn’t sure of everything this new body had in store for him but…he was terribly excited to find out, and now he and Faustite had all the time in the world and…well.

Celadonite liked it that way.

Perhaps it was a weakness of his that he would always reciprocate attention from a boy. A kiss received was a kiss given, all lingering heat, all marvel for how he didn't have to augment himself or rely on otherworldly artifacts to avoid hurting the boy in front of him. They were close, and they had been close, and Celadonite was not yet a pile of ash.

Rather, Faustite was beginning to doubt that his searing flame had any negative effect on him.

However raw he felt from slights he felt, like missing out on Albite's promotion to eternal, or Celadonite's partial youmafication and promotion, those hurts were often assuaged by the promise of making it up to him. He smiled, and he hid it against his boy's shoulder, even as his smugness settled in his bones for the night.

"Then make it up to me. As many times as you want." These boys — they were each different shades of astonishingly stupid, but they were each deserving of his time and love.

"Take you home, then." His grip shifted, and the pair vanished to the half-constructed abode in the Sunken City.
