It was almost funny. She hadn’t actually made any bows since she had been corrupted. Leander had told her she had liked to do it, but she simply hadn’t…and yet, the idea of making some sounded so utterly fantastic now that she was able to come up with three in a very short amount of time. One themed like a watermelon, one like a lemon and one with the feelings of a beach, tan and blues with some iridescent silver threads interwoven in the blue. They were…really pretty actually, and Sophie had been intending to send pictures of them to Caius but…
She was impatient. Obviously.
So instead, she did take pictures of them, but the idea of sending an email and hoping for a reply didn’t get another eclair in her stomach, so she hurried to the bakery and beamed when she saw that it wasn’t very busy and that the blonde boy was once again at the counter. “Hey! Hey it’s me again, so I made the bows we talked about, and I’d love another eclair, if you don’t mind.”
Grinning brightly, Sophie put the bows on the counter and spread her hands. “Ta Da! I can obviously make more if you’d be interested in selling them here, I can’t say how many would sell but. I think they’d look so cute on some of your little mascots!”

Caius blinked at her, surprised at first. Stunned, even. And then, he couldn’t help but laugh.
“I haven’t even had a chance to ask my dad!”
Oh–wait, no. Quick correction. “Boss!”
He shook his head and tried not to look absolutely embarrassed so he reached into the display case so he could pull out an éclair for her. He passed it over immediately and then began to examine the bows.
“These are cute, though! I don’t know if we have enough space to set up a full display case, for a bunch of bows–it gets kinda crowded in here, but we might be able to do something. Or maybe we can buy the bows off of you and keep a small amount on display and advertise a link to your shop? I don’t know, I might be thinking too big, too quickly. But these are really cute! I can definitely work with these, we have a few characters who I bet they’d look really cute on.”

“Your dad? Oh my god that’s adorable!” Sophie grinned and looked so happy, pleased that he had liked the bows. “I don’t mind if you can’t sell them! That’s perfectly all right, I had a lot of fun making them!” She pressed her face against the glass case looking at everything on display. “Actually, could I have an eclair and another one of the birthday cake cupcakes? I would love you forever, Caius!”
Looking up, Sophie grinned and her eyes went over the charms once again. “I could maybe set up an etsy or something and then you could do business cards? That would work just as well. I’m not sure how many I want to make, truthfully these were the first bows I’ve made in months, but it made me really feel good to make them. And they turned out really nicely!”

“They did turn out really well!” He said, already reaching for a birthday cake cupcake to offer as well. “You should definitely look into setting up your own shop. I can get you a discount on business cards, or maybe we can team up and do double sided business cards for any of the bows or charms? I’ll have to pitch it but I think that could be a worthwhile investment. If you needed art or a logo for your shop or something, maybe I could help out. I love designing things like that.”
He was trying not to sound too excited or get ahead of himself, but here she was–with bows already made, and she’d come back to the bakery to show them off. So, he could only assume that she was excited, too if she was back already.
…Or she just really liked the sweets.

Sophie hesitated, biting her lip as she looked at Caius, seeming to be sizing him up, to see if he really meant it or if this was some cruel joke. Finally though, she gave a small nod, taking the cupcake and giving a small, unsure smile. It was different than the large, easy grins she was used to wearing nowadays but. It kind of felt more real.
“I think that sounds pretty amazing, actually. It’ll be nice to get into a hobby again, and the idea of seeing my bows in your art will be…pretty awesome. Maybe, if you wouldn’t mind…I could commission a mascot for my shop too? I’d be fine if you sold those charms and whatnot but.” She looked thoughtful and then grinned. “A bird of some kind. With a bow holding the feathers in her hair. That’s what I’d want, if you’d be up for designing it? I think it could be fantastic. Maybe like…I have no idea what kind of bird. But she’s got to be blue. Maybe blue and purple. Those are the best colors after all.”

He considered it for a moment and bobbed his head a little from side to side, as if he were bouncing around some ideas. “I might be able to do that, yeah. I don’t get off for another hour so I’ll need some time to get everything sorted out and talk to the people in charge, but–I think I might have some ideas, maybe. I don’t know, I’ll sketch when I get off,” he smiled, and still seemed to be a little jittery with excitement.
“We can bounce around some ideas when I have a little more information about it all. But I’d like to help, that sounds really cute! I can send you some sketches, maybe, after dinner tonight. And we can talk things out. I’m really glad you came back,” he laughed, “I’ve been jumpy all day, you’ve been a really good distraction and kept me in a good mood!”

Sophie nodded and scribbled down her phone number. “Text me okay? Even if a partnership or something doesn’t work out, I want to be friends! If that’s okay with you, I mean.” She looked almost worried that it wouldn’t be, but pressed on. “I’m glad that you’re in a good mood! Why are you jumpy? Is everything okay?”
She paused, a strange flash of what felt like a half forgotten nightmare swimming through her mind. A man yelling at Leander, telling him to leave. That he was…
Shaking her head to try to clear it, Sophie forced a smile. “Your Dad won’t be mad, right? He’s not going to punish you for any of this…is he?” Truthfully, she hadn’t thought of that. If this was going to get her new friend into trouble…she desperately didn’t want that.
“If it is, seriously, we don’t need to do anything. I’m happy just being your friend.”

Caius accepted the number and nodded eagerly when she mentioned being friends, but as her mood shifted to worry he was quick to clarify, “Oh–no, everyone here is great. I don’t know if I’ve ever even seen either of them mad. They’d have a hard time grounding me, so don’t worry,” he assured, smile in place. “They’re really understanding. They might really like the idea. Arias has done some things with other local businesses before–nothing like an art collaboration, but he’s open minded! And I’m excited, so I’m sure they’ll give it a chance too. You don’t have to worry.”
…But, it was nice that she had. And that she wanted to be friends.
“I’ll text you later! I’m–I’m jumpy right now because I’m waiting to hear back if I got an art booth at a convention. It would be my first one, so I’m excited.” He pulled out his phone number and immediately plugged in her number and, because it was late enough in the day, he pulled out one last éclair and packed it up for her.
“To tide you over until I can message you! And so you know that I’m excited about being friends, too. You get home safely, okay!” he texted her a quick waving emoji. “And text me when you do so I don’t worry!”
Maybe it was a little too clingy for a brand new friend, but he couldn't help it.
He lost his last one to the Negaverse.
He just hoped this time it might be different.
