Gulls called and wheeled overhead, exultant in the sun. Kechi held tight to her Father's hand. He was her most favorite adult, closely followed by Aunty Kina, her Mom and her Grandparents.
"Why didn't Elaxi come with us Daddy?" She always felt nervous when her younger sister was not around. Who would protect her?
She looked up into her Dad's bright orange eyes, eyes he shared with her Grandma Nin and her sister.

Ushi looked down at his eldest daughter, recieving as ever a pure jolt of joy at seeing his features along with Sae's looking back at him.
Kechi was imperious, beautiful and protective of her younger sister who, (also stunningly beautiful), was perpetually crying.
"Because today is a special surprise for you love. I will take Elaxi out on another day.
They were approaching the market and his heart began to race.

Why was her father being so cryptic. She frowned, usually she dis everything with her sister. They approached a market and she wondered if they were going shopping for clothes, that would also be strange as her Dad wore basically the same outfit every day. He just had a few very similar changes of clothes. Drove her mother mad.
She looked around at the bright displaus of fruit and vegetables, and wondered what on earth her dad could be after.

He smiled at the look on her face, a perfect match of her parent's patented frowns.
He led her over to a beast vendor's stall. There was one thing that his daughter had always wanted; a janarim like her Daddy and Granddaddy had. Kiyelt didn't have any suitable ones in stock so Ushi was trying here. It was a reputable vendor who usually had good healthy animals for sale.

An animal stall? "Daddy does the ranch really need more animals? Didn't a big shipment just come in the last time Uncle Thal came home? Doesn't Grandpa find enough too?"
There were so many animals that the older people took all morning to do the chores.
When was enough, enough?

"You can never have too many critters pet, just too many people. Besides this creature will be special, it is not for me, grandpa or uncle. It is a creature of your very own that we are in search of, your very own janarim, just like Daddy has, like you have always wanted.
He waved down the vendor and explained to him exactly what he was looking for.
The man disapeared in the large dome tent shouting orders to his minions who promptly brought out three janarim in the paddock. They were lovely colors, maroon, magenta with spots, a bright pickle green with yellowish socks and a tan and black.

"One of those janarim could be mine?" Transfixed she moved forward, looking intently at every aspect of the beasts. She paused, frowning.
"Do you have any more? None of these will work."
The man spluttered a little and asked why.
"Recent parasite load, thin legs, attitude problem." She pointed at each janarim in turn and listed it's primary defect. She had done her research since she could read...and had pelted her family with questions about janarim since she could talk.

Ushi smirked and when the man looked at him he nodded his consent.
"Well we do have one more, he is a younger beast, well trained. He was supposed to be a young Oban generals war mount but a sickness took his cousin and he is the only one that can look after her at the moment. So he backed out of the deal. He is quite a bit more money and can be a bit of a handful."
"Bring him out." he was pleased that Kechi had not let her excitement get the best of her.

She waited expectantly , wondering if her Father had a backup plan if this janarim was also a dud. She needn't have worried for the animal who walked out of the tent and into the sun was obviously from fine stock, he had a high proud collected carriage, ease of movement, a chiseled head along with a fiery intelligent gaze.
He was black with a dark gunmetal grey lateral stripe starting at the back corner of his eye and running his entire length. Small bright blue dots adorned his sides and back, crossing over the lateral line all the way up to speckle his face as well. His eyes were red and he was the most beautiful being she had ever seen.

Judging from the covetous demonic glow now shining in his daughter's eyes, this huge male was the one. He couldn't say that she was wrong either. This was a tip top of the line beast.
Now it was time to haggle, he strode over to lock horns with the seller. He didn't need to know that Ushi was Kiyelts son and probably new more about the beasts than the vendor did.

Kechi ignored them all, focusing on the janarim that after glancing at them all, reached out to n** at the groom who was not paying him enough attention. Hos focus had been taken by the bargaining between her father and the merchant.
Kechi smirked and walked right up to him, smirking, ignoring the pained squawk as the groom payed in blood for his inattention. Her beast tamer blood sang in her veins.
“Hello beautiful, no one here appreciates you do they?”
The janarim fixed his eyes on her, registering her laser focus and liking it. This one knew how to see.

He smiled as his eldest daughter sidled forward to wrap her prize around her finger like ahe had with her whole family. She was cunning and manipulative, a right chip off the ol block. He settled on a fair price for the beast and shook the merchants hand.
“He is yours Kechiri. Teach him some respect.” She would know what he meant. See that the beast obeyed her precisely and strangers not so much. Ushi handed the gold over. He would of corse help her with the training as would the test of the beast bent on the farm.

He was hers, she saw the gold switch hands which made it official. The groom looked like he wanted to warn her away but she sent him such a venomous glare that he didn't say anything. She stepped forward and the janarim slowly dipped his head down to inspect and sniff her.
SHe felt his hot breath on her hand and smiled, waiting for him to touch her first. Let it be his choice, her Father's voice said in her head. She grinned when he gently nosed her hand.

He let the joy touch his eyes but not his mouthas the man was still standing near him. At the very least he had made his daughter happy. He hoped to do the same for Elaxi too. He wondered what she would want, a perzi? Something else that was cute and fluffy? Something told him it was not going to be a janarim like her sister. He felt like they had too many teeth for his youngest. Where Kechi gravitated toward the big teeth, like himself, like Thallassa and apparently like Tethys who had brought a radaku pup home from a seed gathering mission to Jauhar.

Slowly she stroked the huge head.
"Don't worry, you have a home now, you will be my bestest ever friend."
The janarim nudged her then, scrunched up his lips into a snarl at his handler as if to say give my lead to the small one or else."
Slowly she took the lead from the groom. "Don't worry, I have it, I come from a log line of Beast Masters."
The man looked doubtful but then shrugged and handed her the reins, it was her beastie now after all. He moved to take the other janarim back to their stalls. She felt powerful.
