It had been easy to keep in touch when he'd been working out of Sauti and Tale, but once he had disappeared up north, regular communication went to s**t. Huelin was an interesting boss, to put it mildly, the kind of man who paid well and was so fond of his own voice that Kauff barely needed to converse at all. But playing at being stoic and tough was tiring, and the Wind was happy to finally get a break. It had been a full year since he'd been back in Tinerr, and he wasn't ashamed when the third thing he did—after lunch and an hour at a bathhouse—was check his mail. The letter from Xariy was old, and its contents suggested that she had never gotten his last scrawled piece of correspondence, which meant that from her point of view, he had dropped off the face of the world. He told himself the fluttery churning in his stomach was bad eggs, even though food poisoning was rarely accompanied by guilt, and he promptly paid for a spot in a caravan going south, hoping that she had remained in roughly the same location. After a week of basking in his stupidity, Kauff left his traveling companions and strolled into town, contemplating how to go about looking for her. This was all wrong. He never sought Xariy out on purpose. It was desperate, for one thing, and probably terribly bad luck.

If Xariy had to deal with one more broken thing today she was going to lose her cool. She'd gotten her family's help in constructing this sort of safe haven for runaways, her brother had even stopped by to assist, but of course with helping the runaways it meant dealing with problem children like she had been. So lots of broken things. Today's inventory of messed up things included two windows, a set of dining ware snatched, and three new holes in the walls. It was fine. She just had to keep reminding herself that everything was cool and there was no reason to get mad when the kids were mainly just acting out. It just meant she needed to find someone to help in fixing things. Which is why she was in town now. Despite how exhausted she felt, Xariy needed to locate a woodworker or someone just good at constructing things before the children injured themselves. She was particularly concerned about the newest fire child that had wandered into her abode off the streets. A bit of a destructive streak that one, and he had been the reason for the windows. If anything, she needed to run in quick and find someone before getting back. The perks of being the responsible adult she supposed. Wandering around the shops, she wondered what Kauff was up to. She hadn't heard from him in well....a long while. He'd never responded to her letter, which was fine. He didn't have any obligation to respond, despite the sting she felt every time she thought of it. There wasn't any reason to keep in contact despite the fun they had and her own fondness for him that had developed over the years. It was nothing that couldn't be forgotten about with a stiff drink, at least she told herself. Nevermind the fact she hadn't had a drink since starting her house. Despite this, she felt as if she were hallucinating him now with his broad back and larger than life stature. "Get out of my head you tease," she grumbled to herself, focusing harder on her task at hand.

He was too far away to hear her muttering, of course, but Kauff was loitering exactly where she saw him, and he was no hallucination. He found himself holding his breath while he scanned the marketplace for familiar crimson hair, among other notable bits, and when he caught sight of her his first exuberant whoop was comically wheezy. Kauff sucked in some air and tried again. "Xariy!"He hadn't really changed since the last time they had found each other, the only noticeable differences being the length of his hair—temporarily tied back in a loose tail until he could get it cut—and the week's worth of stubble on his cheeks and chin. His pants were still too warm for Oba, but he had picked up a sleeveless blue shirt that was both appropriate for the weather and didn't leave him feeling like he was on display. With a little unconscious hop, he grabbed his bag and strode toward her, unsure if she would greet him with a smile or a slap. He wouldn't mind either one.

Surely she was imagining the handsome man. She couldn't just will him into existence that was crazy, and yet here he was. Standing right in front of her. Looking more attractive than the last time she'd seen him, he was certainly distracting. Xariy didn't want to look too excited to see him. He'd ignored her after all. Left to wander while she was working hard to help the kids who'd wandered in. The butterflies in her stomach needed to calm down. This was no time for a dance party. "You big jerk," she ended up huffing out, fist colliding lightly with his chest. She didn't know what to say or where to even begin. So much had happened and they were older now. She shouldn't be upset. She had no claim on him, but she was mad he hadn't reached out to her.

"I'm sorry," he said, briefly catching her fist and rubbing his thumb across her fingers. Gods, it was good to see her. He couldn't wipe the grin from his lips, even when faced with her irritation. "I didn't mean to go missing for so long." Kauff had thought about it, but blaming the messengers was a poor excuse. He should have made sure she knew where he was going before he went away. "Are you okay? If you need to smack me around, go for it."

Xariy shook her head, pressing her forehead against his solid chest for a moment as she grumbled against it. She was a master thief and now look at her. Reduced to a grumpy mess and caretaker. She was sure Kauff wouldn't find her as exciting as she had been, and that thought above all else worried her. What if the fun they had back in the day was just that? A memory now. What if he didn't appreciate what she had become? She wanted to ask him all these questions, but the most she could manage was staring back up at him and mumbling irrelevant words. "I'm not going to hit you. That would be considered spousal abuse," she managed to tease, free hand brushing against the stubble on his face.

"You're right, dearest wife. I wouldn't want to see you locked up for something that was completely my fault. Not when we've been so recently reunited." Kauff settled his pack against his leg then loosely looped his arms around her, crossing his fingers at the base of her spine. "Can I kiss you?" He leaned into her touch with a faint sigh, eyes never leaving her face. "Sorry I'm so spiky."

Xariy felt the anger drain from her as he spoke, already forgiving him for the vanishing act he pulled. She didn't mind the scruff honestly. It made him feel more rugged and wild. It sort of matched his personality in a way. At least from what she remembered. But he was still willing to joke with her like they used to, so maybe there was hope. "I would be mad if you didn't, Kauff," she muttered, tilting her face up more to look at him expectantly.

At least ten counter-quips and bits of banter flashed through his mind, but he said none of them, leaning in and pressing his lips to hers soon after he had her permission. His kiss started off fairly chaste, but it didn't end that way, and by the time he pulled away, Kauff's eyes glittered with mischief. "I've missed you."He looked past her, recalling how out of place he had once felt here, but right now, none of that mattered. "Were you here for something in particular? We should do that. Right?" He was determined to be responsible, but right now he wanted to lift her into the air and spin in giddy circles. "I could help."

If Xariy could keep him there in that moment she would have, but he was right in mentioning her responsibilities. Unfortunately. Despite her best efforts to ignore them, she knew she couldn't. She stole another not so chaste kiss from the man before giving herself some good distance from him, knowing if she didn't she'd be a goner. "Yes. Right. Things. I was coming to town for building supplies and to hire a builder. Someone to fix windows and board up holes in walls," Xariy attempted to explain, pausing when she realized that sounded a bit odd. "I run a house now. For kids like I was."She rubbed her hands together nervously, hoping that didn't make him want to leave faster. She knew men could be a bit anxious about children, but she didn't know if Kauff was that way.

A house for kids. It was not at all what he had thought she would say, but being surprised by her was nothing new. He took his time situating his bag on his back, even though he had left his poscutas and hammer up north, and when he faced her again, his grin had settled into something less manic, but his eyes were just as bright. "I can board walls, but you don't want me on windows or your floors will be covered in shards."There had been a time when Kauff had been terrified of children, if only because they would have been accidents with women he didn't particularly care about. Now... well... that wasn't a worry he had these days. Other people's kids though? He liked the older ones because they were less likely to break like Xariy's windows, but he wasn't against trying a tea party or bedtime story. As of today, he had never been asked. Somehow he doubted any of the kids in her care would request one either. "So, I guess... lead the way? If you don't mind a visit." He wanted to see this place she had built and learn more about the child she had been, if she would have him.

Xariy picked up her supplies that she could find, motioning for him to follow after her. It wasn't a long walk, but it was a little ways out of town. She'd settled it in a spot close enough to the border that more than just Oban kids would wander into. She'd had all sorts wander through, but at the moment there were only three hanging around. They just happened to be a bit of a wild bunch. She couldn't help but glance back at him every couple of moments, appreciating him every time she looked back. "Just a warning, the kids are a bit....unruly. So if they try to say anything just ignore them. They're just angry and frustrated. All those childhood hormones. I bet you can relate a bit, huh?" Xariy winked at him, hefting up the boards in her arms. Arriving at the house, it was nothing grand to look at. It had a door, some busted up windows, and a fence around a small yard. Big enough to house kids that wandered in without it being too much for her to manage on her own. "Welcome to my humble abode. I've managed it all myself for a few years now. After the merchant business with my parents I thought helping those like me was a good place to put my efforts."

Kauff's first mistake had been his failure to offer to carry Xariy's supplies, but he was so singularly focused on good behavior that he ironically missed his chance entirely. As he walked behind her, enjoying the view despite his efforts, he came to the conclusion that maybe it was okay for now. She had been on her own for almost as long as he'd known her, and just because he had shown up again didn't mean he needed to swoop in and rescue her. He would carry things the next time they were in the market, his silent promise ensuring that he would be around for future shopping trips. When they reached the house, Kauff looked over its exterior with open curiosity. He knew the parts a house should have—he liked to think he wasn't a complete idiot—but he had never personally lived in one. Minus a smattering of overnight stays at inns, tents were the structures he knew best, and for a long while now, he'd had nothing more than campsites to curl up in. Even with the shattered windows, this place felt permanent and sturdy to Kauff. A good home. "It is," he said, aiming to be reassuring. He knew he was hopelessly biased against actual scrutiny, but if he tried to be objective, he supposed he could see she had been a little vexed. Irked. Maybe even discouraged. It couldn't be easy taking care of one child, let alone a handful of them. "I'm not sure I was angry when I left home, but I can relate to frustrated. Though I didn't have any windows to break. I've also never actually had a kid mouth off at me. This might be fun." He abandoned his pack on the ground once again and motioned to the boards. "Can I put those anywhere?"

"If you keep leaving your pack on the ground someone is likely to walk off with it," Xariy laughed, hefting the boards in her arms up a little bit and considering for a moment before allowing him to take them. "If you want to put them by the door I'll get to them later when I feel like being handy." Xariy brushed her hand against his arm as she passed off the goods, chuckling to herself. She was giddy, something that didn't happen much with her. She wanted to know everything he had done, where he'd been. If he'd been seeing anyone. She frowned at that however, wondering if she really did want to know or if she wanted to keep it quiet. She couldn't blame him if he had been with random flings. Anything to get the mind off of stressful things. She just found herself a bit jealous of it is all. They were fake married after all. How dare anyone sleep with her fake husband. "They will absolutely mouth off to you. Or they'll ask you a lot of questions. Or both," she warned, picking up his pack from the ground. "Shall we?" A blur of tan and pink rushed passed her as she opened the door, the clear signs of Liyn trying his best to hide before she noticed him. Along with the teen leaf, there were two others she had been caring for. A fire lad who seemed a bit too quiet for his own good, and a water child she'd found herself. She wasn't sure if she'd been left or not, but of the three she was the youngest and not so rowdy. Really Liyn and Veris were the biggest issues she had.

He snickered as he took the boards from her and glanced back at his bag. "Yeah, probably." Surprisingly, he had thought about that in the midst of everything else, but if anyone wanted his dusty clothes and Tale snacks, they could go ahead and steal them. On second thought, he probably shouldn't enable a pack of troubled children with such enthusiasm. Kauff nodded and headed for the door, placing the boards where she had directed. He froze for a moment as a breeze ruffled his back, and even though he hadn't seen the kid who had caused it, he now knew they weren't alone. He turned and looked around, ready with a neutral half-smile and the loosest body language he could manage. Normally, he wasn't nervous when meeting new people, but impressions were important here in particular, and he didn't want to upset an already volatile teenager. He held up his hands for the pack, nearly whispering, "I can take that back if you want."
