Zumei was in a bit of a predicament. While she had managed to finally wander out of Zena and the cold, now she was back in her own homeland and unsure what to do. Wandering was nice and all when one had a goal, but Zumei didn't really have that. Goals were for people who planned for more than a day ahead of time. Which is why her big scheme now was to figure out who was walking in the opposing direction of her. It was a fun game she was playing with herself, one she had kept up with for several minutes. Attempting to figure out just how was coming towards her. They were alone. Maybe. Unless they had someone hiding in plain sight and were going to rob her. The weight of the hammer on her back said that was a bad idea, but sometimes people made bad choices! Very bad choices! They didn't really look dangerous however. Just a bit fancy. Maybe they were a noble going off on a fancy exploration mission. Or perhaps they were just a traveler like her. "Hey! You!" She finally called out to them as they came closer, tilting her head at the bright green of the boy's hair and outfit. "Ya look pretty fancy what're you doing out here, huh??"

Most of the time, Howth traveled by cart. It was cleaner and quicker than walking, and there was less of a chance he might get lost. But there were large swathes of this continent where renting affordable transportation was unlikely or outright impossible, and so, he walked. He didn't think his destination was much farther, and his pack was light, so he had little to complain about. Other travelers weren't a rare sight, but most of them paid him little attention after exchanging polite nods. This one, however... He wasn't afraid of random earthlings injuring him for no reason, but he was wary of just about everyone for non-violent reasons. Howth stopped, turning to briefly look behind him even though he knew he was the only person she could be talking to. "Hello!" He tried to match her enthusiasm, but the attempt fell a little flat. "I'm, um... thank you?" He liked looking polished, even when circumstances didn't call for it. "I'm headed west. To... the city." It wasn't a lie. He was on his way to Tind. But her motivations were vague at best, and he thought it would be wise to keep his business to himself until she proved she wasn't going to cave in his skull with that hammer. Maybe he was a little afraid of people hurting him for no reason after all. "Might I ask you the same thing?"

"Oh me? Well....I'm just sort of traveling," Zumei started to explain, poking a thumb to her chest as she looked over the boy in front of her more closely. She was certainly more built than he was, at least from what she could tell. Zumei worked hard to keep her form fit and toned, however that didn't always make for toning any other skills. For a traveler he sure did carry a whole lot of glass on him. How weird!! But he really looked too put together for a travel wearied adventurer. Maybe this was a one time ordeal for him? Or a start. Or maybe he was lifting all the glass to be super strong. "You look too put together to be a wanderer yourself. I'm Zumei, by the way. Nice to meet you," she continued to rapid fire speak at him, thumping him lightly on the chest with her knuckles. "Are you training for something special?"

"Howth. That's... me. It's nice to meet you as well." He deliberately held very still when she tapped him, though a few of the vials on his belt clinked together in the brief silence. He wondered how much he should say. This wasn't a party where he was expected to brag or a school orientation where he was meant to impress, and he had never been great at talking about himself. "I have trained," he began. "My father is a non-magical healer and I used to help him with his salves. But now I make ink and I travel, looking for things I can put into it." He looked for shiny things too, and though some part of him always wanted to keep what he found, he liked carts and nice clothes a little too much to hold onto it all. Maybe there would come a day when he liked those things less so he could amass some savings. "I don't really wander without a destination, so I suppose I'm not a wanderer. Do you just... walk?"

"I do. Just walk and walk and walk. So much walking. Not as much talking. At least not in big bursts," Zumei explained, focusing on the vials that tapped together on his person. Ohhhh those looked really nifty. She'd never heard of salves or ink before. Not really. Just rubbing dirt in things it'll fix them right up. She didn't really get good medical advice overall. Ink sounded nifty. Maybe it was made for tattoos. Or other things. But putting things into it? What did that mean? "Can you make tattoos? Like putting ink on skin? Have you considered that as an option? You may be able to put different colors and things into it to make that. Is that what you trained to do? To put ink on skin?" There were plenty of people who would pay good money for something like that. She would probably pay for it herself if he was willing to give her a piece.

"Oh, well, I never thought to do that." It seemed silly in hindsight, not immediately connecting ink with tattoos, but his ink was made to not be seen which would probably discourage all but the most masochistic customers. "I don't think I could..." He hooked his finger and poked at the air. "...stick someone that many times. I suppose I might try it someday? I could start small." He did have needles on him, though he'd have to go scrounging for nicer colors. But all of that was moot. He was not giving someone he just met on the road a tattoo. "My ink is normally for correspondence. It disappears after you write, and can only be brought back by the person who is meant to read it."

Zumei pouted ever so slightly at him, wanting to see if he really could make her a fancy tattoo. However the pout quickly faded with his secondary statement of disappearing ink. She reached forward, tapping at one of the vials again out of curiosity as she looked up at him. "These little bottle things here? They disappear? How do you make it to someone specific reading it? With magic?" She wiggled her fingers dramatically with this statement. "Or something you created. How does it work? Do you have to lick the parchment or spit on it? Like some sort of blood pact with the writer." There were so many options she could think of, however none of them really made sense to her. They seemed fancy like Howth, but that didn't really explain how it worked. "Technically you could make someone a fancy note with your invisible ink stuff. Like leave a special note on a lover's skin, hmmmm?" she laughed, winking at him.

If any of the things Zumei was saying were true, Howth would be a far more interesting person. A blood pact? Magic? He knew his father secretly continued to hope that he would somehow unlock his hidden magical powers later in life, but any inherent ability seemed to have passed his family by. "It's a very specific mixture." He had only been of value to the Academy of Steam because he wouldn't share exactly how the base compound was made, though he found he cared less and less the longer he was on the road. But now was not the time nor place to get into ink recipes, even if he wanted to reveal his secrets. "I... I suppose you could paint someone. I haven't tried it. There isn't any, um, licking or blood, or even magic, just an additional ingredient or two in the revealing liquid that matches the ink." How to better explain? He pulled a small vial out of his pocket and swirled it around. The liquid inside was a faint pink and completely opaque. "Let's say I put capramel hair in this ink. I write a note to my... business associate..." He hadn't intended on continuing her lover example, but the way he paused made it seem like he was doing so anyway. "Then I let it dry and send it off. They receive the note, brush it with the matching capramel hair revealer, and they can read the letter. Not every addition works with the invisibility part, which is why I travel. I'm looking for things that work."

Zumei nodded, rubbing at her chin like an intellectual. Or what she thought intellectuals did. Most of what Howth said went well over her head, but she did understand collecting fun things to better help with work! She put feathers on her hammer to make it go faster. Like a speedy winged thing. She didn't know how many people needed secret ink, but considering Howth had a job traveling she guessed the need was more than she knew. The small vial he swirled around was definitely interesting. Pretty to look at. If he really wanted he could sell the fancy colorful vials as decoration. Zumei was certain some would pay good money for nifty glass decorations. "You're really smart then, huh? Takes you a long time to figure all this out to make it work right. Or maybe you're so smart it doesn't take that long," Zumei smiled, nodding approvingly at him.

It took far too long for him to realize that she wasn't following, and when he did, he felt an embarrassed flush prickle his neck and ears. He had been rambling, hadn't he? He hated when he did that. "I'm..." He knew he was intelligent and he was even quietly proud of that fact, but it felt like extremely poor etiquette to say so. "I guess I spend a lot of time thinking," he admitted. "But it did take me years to figure all of this out, so it balances, I guess. I wanted to get into a very selective school, so I made something they couldn't ignore." And then when he had finally been invited to attend, Howth had refused.

"Something they couldn't ignore, huh? But it's invisible....so wouldn't they ignore it? Isn't that kind of the point," Zumei laughed, clapping Howth on the shoulder. "You're an interesting guy, Howth. I like you." If it were her trying to get someone's attention, she would have made something waaaaaay harder to ignore. Much, much louder! Like maybe something that yelled a lot or something that danced so they would notice. "Where is the school anyway? Not around here anywhere, right? I don't think I've seen any schools around."

"I hadn't thought about it like that. They might have never even seen my work at all." Howth laughed as well, huffs of amusement escaping him as he held his balance under her enthusiastic pats. "The school is on Belrea, across the water. You have to have a Life Work to get in, something you plan to work on... for the rest of your life. Hence the name. Like, yours might be hammers, though the weapon sector is more focused on keeping the peace than fighting."

Zumei listened intently to Howth as he spoke, tilting her head every now and again as she tried to understand what he was saying....though she really didn't understand a whole lot of it. It sounded really boring to focus on one single thing for the rest of ones life, and she hoped he wasn't doing that! She grabbed hold of his shoulders, trying to be careful not to crash into him and break his vials as she stared into his eyes. "Don't tell me you're doing that, Howth. You're too smart to work on one single thing. Someone like you should work on thousands of things, not seclude yourself to one!" Zumei nodded like she had spouted wise words, spreading her arms out wide to visually show how many things he should work on.

His pale eyes widened when met with Zumei's vehemence, and again he tried to contain his flight response as she took hold of him. He had helped to fight raging fires and crawled around in caves by himself, but somehow human enthusiasm was far more daunting. "I... I won't. I'm not. I was going to, but I decided not to go." He nodded back, hoping he appeared earnest. "I think I should work on thousands of things too." Maybe not quite that many, but the idea was still sound.

"Riiiiight? It's way cooler! And if you do a thousand really amazing things they'll definitely be talking about you all over the land. Howth, Howth, Howth, Howth," Zumei whooped, pumping her fist in the air as she cheered him on. He said fancy words and had fancy things. Howth was a smart one. She could tell that much. Working on a thousand things seemed well within reason for someone like him. "Will you name something after me if you get inspired to make something cool? Like hm...the Zumei Zooms. Or the Zumei Juice...wait no maybe not that. You're probably better at names, huh?"
