Gismondine read the message inviting him to the General’s office and swallowed, feeling a little bit of…fear? Dread? Worry that he wouldn’t live up to any sort of expectation at all, because he never did?

…all of the above?

He had stopped to get drinks and snacks, because of course he did, and when he knocked on his new General’s door, he held two milkshakes in his hands, one chocolate and one vanilla, as well as two packages of chips, one spicy and one plain, and a few packs of candy. Some chocolate, some hard sugar, and some were sour. It would help him get a feel of what his new General liked…help him get a feel of what kind of person that General Ashanite would be.

…And hopefully it would earn him a little favor in return.

After knocking, Gismondine let himself into the room, swallowing. “G-General Ashanite. I’m…I’m Captain Gismondine. I you…asked me to come meet you, I…I hope that means you were told about me…I…I brought some snacks! And a milkshake, you…you can pick first! With everything!”

He hurried over and set the drinks on Ashanite’s desk, careful to put them away from any papers or anything that looked important, and then pulled the plethora of snacks from his subspace pocket and laid them out as well, before taking a step back, giving a nervous smile and hiding his hands behind his back so that his new General wouldn’t have to see him worrying at the skin around his nails.

“...I hope…I hope that I can please you.”

Ashanite wasn't quite sure, yet, what to make of Gismondine. He had been one of Sylvite's subordinates--another of the people she abandoned and betrayed when she freed Princess Ganymede and ran to the other side. Timid, was the impression he'd gotten so far. That was only reinforced by the knock, by the shaky way he spoke. At least he hadn't waited to be invited in; that was something, in the initiative department.

Ashanite smiled, charming and welcoming, or so he hoped, and gestured for Gismondine to sit without standing up from behind his desk. The room wasn't exactly heavily decorated, but it did have a couch (Ashanite had slept on that more often than he wanted to admit), armchairs, and a large bookshelf that was packed to the gills with a variety of reading material--The Collected Works of William Shakespeare, The Art of War, a clearly well-loved and very fancy leatherbound edition of Dracula, and plenty of others.

"Captain," Ashanite said, "please sit." It was....a little surprising, to have someone bring treats on first meeting, but it certainly said...something about Captain Gismondine. "Thank you," he said. "I'll probably hold onto some of this--it'll be nice to have some snacks in my office for when I'm working." The milkshake, though, he took--chocolate--because why let it go to waste, really. The sour candy and spicy chips were separated away, for exactly that purpose.

"Youy're already making afantastic impression," Ashanite said. He was pretty, too, which was always a positive, though Ashanite wasn't sure if flirting with him might just make him combust like a little firecracker. "But first and foremost, I want to know--what are your goals in the Negaverse? Is there a particular branch you feel drawn to? I work in Special Operations, but I'll be happy to help you develop your talents in whatever direction you like."

He paused, briefly.

"...And, Gismondine. I understand you've had a rough time of it so far. I want to make sure that changes."

Gismondine took the chair and the vanilla milkshake, making a mental note that Ashanite had taken the spicy chips…he could do that. He knew all about spicy snacks after all, they had been Xanders favorites and…he could do that very well.

“Thank…thank you sir. Um…I don’t…really have any goals outside of…not dying…I just…want to get s-strong enough so that I don’t keep…getting into situations like…”

…Well. Most of the situations he had gotten into when he had been faced with members of order but…

That would very much not solidify his reputation with this new General.

“I wasn’t…brought in for anything…other than protecting the one who…did the bringing in..he had hoped that I would die in his place but…but that wasn’t the case and he died instead…I…I mean. It wasn’t a great start for me, he almost…almost got his wish…”

Drawing in a breath, Gismondine tried to calm down enough that he could take a sip of his drink, and he was able to, savoring the vanilla flavor before continuing. “...There’s a senshi out there…he…has the power of…cinnamon I believe. He’s almost killed me twice but…I guess if anything I’m…durable.”

Hopefully…hopefully that wouldn’t turn Ashanite off in wanting to mentor him. In wanting to be his General…and if it did…

Well. Jet had said that he hadn’t had a General…so perhaps…Gismondine could figure out how to go it alone…if he really had to.

Ashanite listened, and the corners of his mouth dipped into a frown. He brought a hand up to cover it, resting his elbow on his desk and hoping he looked thoughtful more than upset--because he didn't want Gismondine to think that Ashanite was upset with him. He hadn't done anything wrong here; wrong had been done to him.

"I'd like to change that, then," Ashanite said. "We can work on your fighting skills, and from there, I'd like to talk about building some things for you to work towards. Do any of the branches interest you? I'm Special
Operations, but I'd be happy to help you work towards whatever you'd prefer."

He made a mental note of the Senshi Gismondine mentioned.

"Have you filled out a database entry on him yet? If not, I'd like you to. It sounds like he's a major threat, and other officers should be warned about him." That was a good first step. Perhaps they could bend him towards Information--his relative apparent harmlessness could only be useful, there.

“I’m…not really sure. Is there a branch for…people that try to…make…peace? Or…Or…just…I don’t know…”

Gismondine swallowed. “I want to try to bring Sylvite back…I really want to try to do that…I think…if I could find senshi who aren’t actively…trying to kill me…I could try…to convince them of…of being on the wrong side of the fence…I…would love to do that. But…I doubt there’s a place like that…that’s okay though! I would just…rather help in any way that I can…”

He drew in another long sip of his milkshake. “What…does special operations do? Or…the other branches. I’m sure…I do know but…I wouldn’t mind a refresher…I…Sylvite was more focused on…on keeping me alive, which…I very much appreciate! I was able to become a Captain under her guidance…but I guess she thought I already knew but…Cavanstite never mentioned it, nor did Parisite…um…I’m sorry.”

God. He really was useless.

Ashanite looked thoughtful. "Infiltration, perhaps?" Though they were usually focused on the civilian side of things--perhaps it was better to just lay out the options and let Gismondine turn them over.

"Infiltration is primarily concerned with civilian-side power, but I think they might look positively on powered-side recruitment as well. Their job is to make sure that the civilians here in Destiny City understand that the Negaverse is on their side, and that we're working to protect them." Which was a rough sell, Ashanite knew, but he admired them for trying to make it.

"Intelligence might also be good for you--tends to focus on gathering information about our foes, and making sure that other officers know everything they need to in order to stay prepared. Also a good branch for identifying potential recruits, since that's firmly their work." And Ashanite thought it might work well.

"Special Operations..." Was firmly not for Gismondine, by Ashanite's evaluation. "Our job, primarily, is to handle the dirty work. Taking out targets that can't be handled any other way, like the Senshi and Knights who've chosen Transcendence--the ones who glow," he clarified, in case Gismo wasn't familiar with the term, "or ones who would be more of a liability than an asset if they were corrupted. Those are few and far between, though; I'm generally of the opinion that the Negaverse can make use of anyone, and I'd rather see our enemies brought around to understanding us than killed." He shrugged. Smiled. "I used to be one of them, and I came to recognize that I belonged here, not there. So, I'd like to support you, if that is your goal. Recruitment is important, and better that they join us."

Gismondine nodded slowly. “That…those both sound good…not…not the Special Operations…I don’t…I don’t think I could do that. I’m…”

He swallowed and looked away, shrugging. “I’m not…good with violence unless I have to be…but…I could try the other two, I guess? Or…you could just spend time with me and see what…what I would be best at?”

There was an obvious hope in his voice with the question. He was so afraid of being abandoned again, and though he couldn’t just…come out and say it. It was there. He…he wanted to have someone to count on. Anyone. But. Someone who wouldn’t leave.

“...I’ll make…I’ll make you proud, General Ashanite, I promise. I can work hard…I’m not…not always good at what I do, but I try so hard…I…I’ll make you proud…”

…Or he’d die trying.

“I’ll…make some reports…I have to make one on…Nectaris too…and…I’ll get all of that done for you soon.”

Ashanite nodded. "I don't think it's for you, either. But that's alright. Not everyone has the skills SpecOps requires." He took a sip of his milkshake, turning over the possibilities.

Gismondine had potential. It was tragic that it hadn't been properly nurtured. But that was alright. He could fix that.

....It would also be a nice break, having someone around that wasn't constantly sassing him.

"I can work with you as much as you need, Gismondine. We'll figure out where you fit. And make sure your talents get properly developed and put to their best use." He was smiling, a gentle, charming sort of smile. "And as long as you're trying, I'll be proud of you, I promise."

This was exactly what it meant to be a General in the Negaverse. To work to develop the people under him, to help them come to understand who and what they could be, given the opportunity.

"See that you get the reports in. And let's schedule a practice session--you can show me what you can do with your weapon, and we can identify ways to improve your skills." This wasn't going to be easy, but that was alright. Nothing was worthwhile if it wasn't a challenge.

He swallowed, nodding almost eagerly. “...All right. Yeah. I can do all of that…it’s not a problem at all…and I would like help with my weapon…I’m having a lot of issues trying to figure how how to use it but…I think I might be getting there it’s just…”

He was useless, so. It wasn’t working, obviously.

“I want you to be proud of me…um…I’ll have the reports in tonight…I…I promise. Maybe…maybe we can do the practice session next week? I’m…I’m free whenever you are…” Gismondine managed a small, hesitant smile and got up, giving a bow and hoping that his smile didn’t look quite like the grimace that it felt like. “Enjoy your snacks…and um…tell me what else you like…I…I like snacks. And dinners and I always try to bring something for my Generals…you all…” He swallowed. “...you work so hard and deserve to be appreciated too.” He felt his cheeks growing warm with the words, and his eyes beginning to burn at the thought of how it had made Sylvite happy, and Gismondine took the opportunity to make another bow to hide his rising…feelings.

“I’ll let you know when my reports are in, General Ashanite…I…have a good…um. Have a good evening…Day? Night…Just…”

He looked truly on the verge of tears and picked up his drink, almost fleeing from the room. <******** class="quote">
