[ Maizah 1 ]
The sunlight was still peeking from the horizon, the dawn's light gently making its way through the thick canopy around them. Maizah was used to such scenes, having made this trek dozens of times since she began to assist with the weekly hunts. She was comfortable with the silence, the shadows, and the shade. It was a lovely ritual that was the calm before the rush of the hunt.
This time, she was joined by her brother. Usually Yonas kept to himself, sticking back at the settlement without making much of a scene. She knew his gentle temperament meant he struggled with the more dramatic moments of the tribe life, and she wondered if he might be more keen to follow the path of a tradesmen instead of a hunter.
She, herself, was already in love with such activities, having trained for years with a bow. It may not be the more steady one of true hunters, but it allowed her to hit some small game and add value to the tribe.
"It's nearly time, Yonas. The forest is beginning to wake up..." she replied with a grin, her seafoam eyes bright as they caught the golden light of the morn.

He knew this was an abnormal adventure. He knew that it was a bit strange, and that many of the fellow hunters would look at him funny. Especially with how compassionate he was known to be. But Yonas was growing older, and needed to put himself in situations to add value to his tribe.
Thankfully, he had his sister there to help him along. His sister was his rock, his support, and his shield. He almost couldn't live without her, and enjoyed being in her shadow as it protected him from those around him.
"R-right..." He stuttered out softly in response, his forest green eyes a bit more clouded than his sister's. This type of excitement wasn't his cup of tea, and so he simply followed along slowly, more content with the atmosphere than the opportunity of the hunt.

His response was expected, Yonas was always a man of few words. She glanced over quickly to see how he was, her assessment of his comfort satisfactory. At least he wasn't quivering or anxious. He almost seemed calm, content even.
She turned back with a small grin - progress was always welcome, even if it was small.
"You can tell by the sound of birds..." She explained slowly, pausing and watching as they flitted across the canopy, "In the mornings, birds always travel toward water...which is where we want to go."

Her words stirred him. Sure Maizah would support him but never had he heard her speak so gently. So reverently. It forced him to pause himself and listen once again. To the trilling of the birds. The breath in the trees. The movement of the hunters in the distance.
As always, his response was gradual. Considerate to his own disadvantage and a moment to reword his thoughts in a way that would minimize that disadvantage impact.
"W-what's there?" He replied softly, moving closer to her still.

She paused a moment, looking out into the early dawn and inhaling the air of nature.
"Our prey..." she provided, smirking back at him and sending him a wink, "Where there's water, there's prey".

Her response caused his throat to dry, and he swallowed a moment as he watched her turn back away. Once more, he pushed down the regret at the fact he decided to come along. It was always so difficult to consider what they needed to do when they hunted food. It wasn't that he was resistant to such activities, but he preferred to not consider it if he had a choice.
That being said, he knew that this was a requirement if he lived in his community, and he needed to be open and understanding of such things. Or so he was told.
"P-prey...r-r-right." He mumbled as they continued on, wiping his palms against his pants.

She knew her brother was out of his comfort zone, and she expected he probably wouldn't last the entire hunt. But this also was an opportunity to strengthen his resolve, which was something he sorely needed. Hopefully he wouldn't be so traumatized that he would never dare hunt again.
"We take care of the nature around us and the nature takes care of us. It's a natural breath of life, Yonas. Nothing to be intimidated by..."

Sure, it was easy for her to speak such things, but Yonas struggled to consider that prey was a natural thing. His hands were shaking and his stomach ached, and once again he was glad he wasn't the one who had the bow. He was here to observe, to learn, and not to do. If his sister ended up traveling, he would be left to help care for their family and their tribe. And many didn't seem too keen to give without getting in return.
The tribe was a family, and all family worked together.

She shook her head at his silence, unsurprised at his behavior even if he was out of his element. Instead, as they approached close to the water source, she took note of a small stream. Pausing a moment, she nodded at him to take a break as she pulled out her supplies and checked them.
Preparation was key in a hunt, she didn't want to wait until she was upon her prey to check that her bow was properly strung.

Approaching the small river, the boy kneeled down and pulled out his waterskein, filling it slowly with the trickle of water. He knew this was a safe water source, that much was easy to determine. If it flowed strong enough, it was safe enough. Leaning back on his heels, he took a long sip, realizing his throat was dry from his nerves, before glancing over toward his sister to watch her prepare her items.

As her brother filled up his water and took a drink, Maizah completed her preparation with her bow and took notice of his actions.
"That's a good idea." She nodded with a grin, before walking over and pulling out her own. Filling her own and taking a long swing, she nodded back to her brother.
"We'll need to follow the river now, try to stay high off the bank. Wouldn't do to get wet."

Placing his drink back on his hip, he nodded at the comment and glanced down the river. The sun was still low, meaning the waters were cool. It was nice against his throat, but to walk with wet feet surely would mean he'd get a cold.
"L-l-lead the w-way." He replied with a nod.

The next few minutes they traveled in silence, Maizah pausing every so often to track the ground or peer into the trees. Finally, as the river began to grow a bit larger, they rounded the corner to find a small pond. Creature flittered around early in the morning, birds swooping in for a drink while while a few Aldabuk arrived on the far side of the pond.
Maizah smirked at that. An Aldabuk would be a perfect meal to bring home. But it was a mother with some fawns, meaning she'd need to find something a bit different.

As they approached the pond, Yonas trailed a bit further behind to give his sister room to scout the area. He was here mostly to observe, meaning his best possible action would be to sit back and not make a sound.

Finally, after what seemed like forever, a male Aldabuk arrived farther away. It was a long range, but Maizah was confident in her ability to shoot strong and true, and so she bent to one knee and prepared to hit her target.
As she knew she only had one shot, the creature too far away to hit twice, she made sure to control her breathing and ensure she wouldn't miss.
Then, holding her bow in place, she let the arrow fly until it raced across the pond and hit the creature smoothly in the proper location. It fell, the others raced off, and she jumped up with a whoop before spinning around to smirk at her brother.
"That's how you do it, Yonas!"
