Adenah waited patiently for the informant to arrive. She’d been in Besaji for a few days now and apart from a few conversations with sailors she’d kept a low profile. Relatively, that is. Unfortunately for her anonymity she’d gotten involved in a few knife throwing contests and made a hefty wage at the inn she was staying in. It helped pay her way while she waited and for that she wouldn’t fuss.
When a hooded figure approached her through the throng of strangers, Adenah couldn’t help raising a brow. A gloved hand flashed a familiar sigil and when she nodded they slipped into the booth across from her. “You have his whereabouts?”

“I do.” For a moment the figure kept their hood down, seemingly passive as they dug around in a pock of their cloak to remove a weathered map. When they slid it across the table the figure waited for Adenah to unroll the parchment before speaking again. “He’s set to sail for Yael on the Solstice so you have less than a week to make your move.” The longer the figure spoke the more their voice started to shift and by the end of it Adenah’s eyes had locked onto them. When she raised her head, Dris’rynne allowed the hood to fall away from her hair and a stream of moonlit locks fell around her thin shoulders.

Adenah slapped a hand over her mouth. She’d almost slapped the table itself, but that would have brought about too much attention and she stopped at the last moment. Still, it wasn’t enough to hide her surprised gasp. Sitting before her was Dris’rynne with the firmest scowl she’d ever seen her mother wear. The woman looked older than she had when Adenah had last seen it, but seeing as it had been years at this point it was only expected. Still, she was as beautiful as ever and seemingly just as sharp.

What are you doing here?

Dris’rynne settled back into the booth and fixed her one lone eye on her daughter. “I could ask you the same. You used to be good for visiting at least one a year and when that stopped I thought the letters were good enough. Then you got hurt the first time and it wasn’t that hard to investigate for myself.” She crossed her legs at the knee under the table. “I tried to stay out of it, Adenah, but you left me little choice.” Of course she’d wanted to come earlier; they both knew that. However, after the first incident the women had agreed it was better if Dris’rynne stayed away from Oba.

She’d left when they nearly killed the shifter the first time and when she’d had Adenah’s younger brothers things became complicated. Dris’rynne had to stay alive for their sakes, even if it killed her to be away.

The hybrid raised her hand to passing server and ordered a shot of the strongest liquor they had. She was going to need it if she was going to make it through this. The last time she’d seen her mother face to face had been a few years after the twins were born and even then it had been brief. There was so much left unsaid between them, but Dris’rynne was perceptive. She’d always been afraid of her mother finding out too much which was why she hadn’t wanted to look her in the eye.

Now she couldn’t escape it.

“How much do you know?”

“I know that Grunt turned my Irregulars over to the Assassins guild.” The very thought made Dris’rynne’s lip curl. She’d worked hard to build the company up to something worthwhile. Even if they had taken the odd assassination they’d also done so much more and now their entire organization was only known for it’s ability to kill. Which, even then, might have been fine if he hadn’t taken it to the extreme. “The young man I knocked out on the way here with your map didn’t have much to say, but I’ve been able to piece information together. Just because I’ve stepped back doesn’t mean I don’t still have my contacts.”

Of course you still have them. Adenah mentally groused. Even living the life of a wife in Jauhar, Dris’rynne was far from ‘helpless’. Her sword skills were what protected their family and also earned their gold so honestly she should have predicted this. Still, at a certain point Adenah had gotten in over her head with this whole matter and no matter how hard she fought to keep above water she was always so close to drowning. Maybe having her mother here wouldn’t be so bad? “What about Ezrah and Mahikel? If you stay here for much longer you could be hurt and they still need you.”

All of my children need me, Adenah. My husband needs me, my sisters…” Dris’rynne leaned forward and held her hand out for Adenah to take. “But we need each other. I am…deeply ashamed that you’ve had to take on my problems. I should have solved this properly before leaving. I thought I was leaving the Irregulars in good hands with Grunt but now I see that it was foolish.”

Of course she’d tried to look into things over the years, but there was only so much she could do from Jauhar. Having her daughters so far away from her…knowing one was in trouble…there had been so many nights that Dris’rynne hadn’t slept a wink over it.

When she saw something shift in her mother’s expression Adenah reached forward and took the shifters hand in both of hers. Was her hand always this small? As a child Adenah had always thought her mother was larger than life, but now she could see the shifter for who she really was; a small, grizzled mother who’d never been given a chance to rest. She’d worked so hard her entire life and it hurt Adenah to know that even with a country separating them she’d been worried.

“I still don’t like the idea of you getting involved,” She murmured. When the server came back around with their drinks she smiled and paid the girl before going back to Dris’rynne. “It’s not your fight anymore, mama; it’s mine. You did as much as you could and then he did what he wanted. None of this is your fault.”

Giving her daughter one last squeeze, Dris’rynne pulled back with a cough to clear her throat. She’d never been good at opening up and despite the fact this was her progeny it still felt uncomfortably vulnerable. “Well, I’m here now and I’m not leaving until I’ve run my blade through his heart.” She stated pointedly before reaching for a shot. “We have three days to come up with a game plan and since no one knows I’m still alive, let alone here, I’d like to keep it that way.”

Which made her think that even having her hood down was a risk she wasn’t willing to take. It was darker in the booth, but still…Dris’rynne lowered her glass and pulled the thick hood back up.

Nodding along, Adenah reached for a shot glass and held it for a moment. While she’d never truly planned on going in this alone she’d assumed her only allies would be those in the guild who detested the way Grunt ran things. Most fell along with his rule happily, but the dissenters were easy enough to gather once word got out that she was Korres’ daughter. Once they saw Korres alive and helping them would they be spurned to fight that much harder?

Or would they run away? Grunt would likely go for her mother first since she was his biggest threat. Adenah’s skills may have sharpened over the years, but she was a stealth killer; her mother was pure, brute strength. The woman’s blades moved faster than the wind itself.

“If we moved tonight we could leave for Yael before he does and set a trap.”

“He’ll be expecting it, but I agree, leaving now would be our best chance. He won’t be as familiar with Yael.” Not that she was either, though with a few days of reconnaissance Dris’rynne could figure something out. “Wherever he plans on going we know it’s likely to be away from the capital, but he won’t go far into Elarian territory so we have a few options.” Pointing toward the map, the shifter trailed the sea from Matori to Yael until resting on a city. “Here, Jodove; from what I’ve heard there aren’t as many travelers which means there won’t be as many guards.”

So, hiding whatever plans he had in mind would be all the easier.

Looking over the map, Adenah had to hmm in agreement. If they left early enough they could spread their people through the area and perhaps even pay off a few ‘opportunistic’ yaeli to keep an eye for them. Some members of Adenah’s own group from Yael so it wouldn’t be difficult. “Then we should leave and find a Captain who doesn’t mind sailing at night.” Normally the task would be hard enough, btu finding one that was okay with sailing to Yael at night? Honestly, she was worried about what kind of monsters would come out for them.

Then again, weren’t they the monsters?

Waving the server down once more, she paid off their tab and waited for Dris’rynne to knock back her drink before making their way out of the pub. They passed a few of Adenah’s compatriots on the way and she spread the word. By midnight they needed to meet at the dock and one way or the other they would be on the sea by morning light.

There was something about watching one’s child handling themselves as a grown adult. The last time she’d spoken with Adenah she knew something was troubling the hybrid, but Dris’rynne had done her best to hold her tongue. At the time she was so sure that in time Adenah would open up to her, just as she did as a child, but the woman before her wasn’t that same girl. She walked with the same confidence Teslaron had instilled in her, but experience hardened her. The changes…they weren’t something Dris’rynne wanted for her, but Adenah was handling them well.

“You’ve really grown.” She remarked as they wandered back to Adenah’s inn. They needed to pick up her things before leaving and for the time being it was just the two of them. “Maybe after this is over you’ll be able to settle down, have a few kids of your own and we can see more of each other.”

Adenah nearly choked on her own spit. “Ah, well- Yeah, sure. Maybe one day.” With everything going on she’d nearly forgotten that Dris’rynne had no idea about Arkadios and Siofra. She and Dovian had done so much work to keep them hidden that even if her mother had an inkling she would have had a hard time. It felt…so wrong not to include her, but mentioning them now would be a sucker punch. If they came out of this alive then she would have to properly introduce them…The entire family deserved that much.

“…Would you like that? If I had children?”
