Pendour didn't need the sheet music for Careless Whispers any more. After a few sessions of practicing it, she knew the notes well enough, but she still found herself playing through it when she had a moment to herself because if she started playing a song like that in an attempt to baffle a Negaverse agent who was trying to do something violent, she didn't want them to come back at her with some remark about how she was pitchy.

It had only happened once, but it was a moment that had burned itself into her mind.

So, when no Chaos auras decided to show themselves right away, Pendour had turned to look for a nice spot to practice. She'd powered up in the arts district after work, and it had just been a short walk to an indie gallery that had a breakfast cafe on the rooftop, full of sculptures and potted flowers.

She planted herself at one of the tables and started working through a few warm up scales.

It seemed to be a quiet night for the Negaverse. Puck leisurely leapt from rooftop to rooftop, keeping up his awareness for Chaos auras, but so far none had been forthcoming. He rarely left his comfort zone for patrolling these days, sticking to the Arts District for the most part, with occasional venturing to the neighborhood around DCU. The Eternal Senshi just didn't feel the need to patrol the entirety of Destiny City, not when there were so many other White Moon and Order types out there now. Once, maybe, when he was still a fresh-faced angry young Senshi, but not any more.

Pausing on the roof of one of the warehouse-lofts common in this part of town, he sent out his feelers again for Chaos signatures. Nothing so far, but he did pick up on a nearby Order aura. He looked around, and while he didn't see anyone right away, he heard what sounded like a flute being played in the distance, the music drifting on the light breeze. Triangulating on the tune being played – was that Careless Whispers? – Puck followed the music until he saw a woman clad in green parked at one of the now-empty tables atop 213 Rosewood Gallery; he recognized the place from the eclectic collection of statues amongst the seating. He couldn't tell what instrument she was playing yet, but it didn't look like a flute.

Cautiously he approached, not wanting to spook her. She was definitely the source of the Order aura, though by her outfit she was probably a Knight of some flavor. He hadn't had much experience with Knights, but he figured this was as good a time to start as any. Peering out from behind a large statue, he watched for a bit, then stepped out of hiding. If she was a Knight, she surely could sense his aura too, so it wasn't like he was sneaking up on her.

"Nice night for a tune, innit?" he said with a friendly smile. "You're very good. What's that you're tootling on?"

Pendour stopped her practicing once she noticed the Order aura that was coming right towards her instead of just passing by at the edges of her senses, and from where she was sitting, she could see the senshi with the wild hair jumping across rooftops before he jumped onto her rooftop.

She raised a hand to wave at him, even as she tilted the scarred side of her face just a fraction away out of instinct.

"Oh, it's my ocarina," she said, holding it up once he asked what he was playing. The lamplight reflected off of its pearlescent surface, and she ran a finger proudly over the holes.

Good, he'd said. He thought she was very good. A wave of warmth was already washing over her chest. "My, um, Knight item? It's magic, but I can also just play songs on it. I'm trying to learn some new ones."

It wasn't hard to smile at him, not with the way he was talking. "I'm Pendour," she said. "Um, hi."

"A magic ocarina? Fancy that," Puck grinned. "I never could get the hang of plain old ordinary ocarinas. Not for lack of trying, to me mum's eternal chagrin."

Grabbing a chair, he pulled it close to the table and sat on it backwards, facing the Knight – Pendour, she said her name was. "I'm Puck, of the Woods," he introduced himself with a nod. "I know music, bit of a musician myself." Something about her was ringing bells in his head; not the way she looked, but the ocarina. He recalled a few months back a girl with an ocarina who'd stopped to listen to him busk on his favorite corner next to That Place, near DCU. They'd played for a bit together, then got tea. Pleasant day, that.

"Don't let me interrupt your playing, Pendour. I was quite enjoying it." Even if it was just scales, she was playing them very well. "The sound is very… haunting, like. Ethereal. Very different than a flute, which is what I thought it might be at first."

"Your mom wanted you to learn the ocarina?" asked Pendour, a gentle curiosity there in the way her eyebrows twitched. "I didn't think it was that popular of an instrument."

After she'd done some research, she'd found that it had gotten a niche following after being featured in the video game Zelda, but it wasn't something she thought had really made its way to music classes. Pendour like it, though, for the way it sounded a little different, a little deeper, maybe, than some of the other flutes, a little haunting, as he said.

There was something easy about the way he was talking, something almost familiar, although she knew she hadn't seen this one before. She would have remembered the name Puck. She relaxed back into her chair again, anyway, and she showed her face, and she gave him a soft smile.

She even played another little scale for him, since he was asking so nicely.

"So what instrument did you end up with, then?" she asked, "Since you're a musician? The regular flute?"

She could almost picture him waltzing around through the woods with that, or with a set of pan pipes.

"I actually didn't know much at all about music when I awakened, but I've been researching and practicing for a few years now. I, um, have this whole collection of regular ocarinas started, but I don't know if there's some threshold I have to cross before I can say that I'm a musician, too."

Puck gave Pendour a warm smile. "There's no crossing no thresholds," he said with a shake of his head. "If you call yourself a musician, if you have the confidence and belief that you are a musician, then you are one. There's no secret handshake or club to join. That's what my mum always tells her students – she's a music teacher. She tells them to believe in themselves and their music. That's all there is to it."

She turned to face him, and another little familiarity bell went off. Had he met her before? He'd for sure remember meeting a pretty Knight if he had – and she was indeed pretty, despite of, or maybe because of, the scars on her face. That girl that played the ocarina with him had scarring on her face too…

"So I play, let's see…" He started counting on his fingers. "Guitar, which is my main instrument, bass, drums, pennywhistle, flute a little, violin a little, aaaaaaaand I think that's it," he laughed. "So far. And no, my mum didn't want me to learn ocarina, I wanted to try it. Didn't go so well, that. And I don't play piano or anything like that – never could wrap me brain around keyboards. I keep playing even despite this… whole thing." Indicating his fuku, he fluffed the feathers on one of his butt-wings for emphasis.

He looked at her again and tilted his head. "I'm sorry, but you seem real bloody familiar to me…"

"Oh, I got to try a pennywhistle once," said Pendour, brightening even farther. "It was around here, actually. There was this street musician who gave me a little lesson when he was on break."

Her eyes softened at the memory. He'd had an easy, rough-around-the-edges kindness to him that had made him lovely to talk to, a little like the senshi that she was talking to right now. His passion for music had been clear, to, and he'd been so kind to her.

He'd believed in her, until she'd believed in herself.

Puck was saying that she was familiar, but the sense of deja vu in her own mind was getting stronger and stronger.

"You said your mom is a music teacher?" she asked, and even though the puzzle pieces were not quite clicking together, she could feel them edging closer and closer. "Um. Would you happen to be from London or something? The nice part, where you have little lunches at Marks and Spencer?"

"Does it show that much?" Puck laughed. "Yeah, I'm from London, from Chelsea in fact. The nice part, where you have little lunches at Marks & Spencer. I've had many a posh nosh there, actually. And yeah, me mum's a music teacher…"

He looked quizzically at Pendour. "You tried pennywhistle from a street musician?" The nagging sense of familiarity nagged at him harder and harder. Trying to put two and two together, he recalled the shy girl with the ocarina whom he'd let try one of his pennywhistles, then took her for tea at That Place. She was sweet and inquisitive, much like Pendour seemed to be. "I'm a busker, same thing really…"

With a growing sense of clarity, he asked, "Would it… would it be okay to like power down in front of you?" Before the words were even out of his mouth, he cast about hard for any Chaos auras – that would be the last thing either of them needed, for a Negaverse agent to stumble on them and learn their mortal identities. "I mean, like, I trust you not to do or say anything to me, yeah? And it's safe now – no Negas about that I could pick up on. I'm not asking you to do it too, okay? I just… got a feeling, you know?"

Puck knew he was taking a big risk, but he had to know. Was Pendour the girl with the ocarina?

He was answering her questions the way that she'd been half-hoping that he would, and yet the puzzle pieces still wouldn't quite click together in her mind. They were getting close, though, so close that it was confusing and almost painful.

It was a relief when he asked if he could just power down.

"Oh, of course," she answered. "Don't worry, it's not like I'm going to report your identity to the Negaverse or something."

Pendour never even asked before she powered down when it was other members of Order who were around, and she didn't ask now, either. She just closed her eyes for a moment, and all the shimmery silks of Pendour vanished away to leggings and a flower-print shirt.

"Like this, I'm Sadie," she said, shifting a little in her chair now that the long mermaid skirts were no longer there to tangle her feet in.

She was, unmistakably now, the ocarina girl.

Puck's eyes widened, and a huge smile crossed his face. "Sadie! I remember y– hang on a mo."

Closing his eyes, he took a breath and let his Senshi trappings drop away, leaves and all, leaving him sitting there in worn jeans and sneakers and a Dead Kennedys t-shirt. "I'm Rob! I'm the street musician, remember? I certainly remember you – how could I forget you?"

He wanted to jump up and give her a big hug. Rob wasn't much of one to reveal his "secret identity" to just anyone, Order-aligned or not; he'd done it months ago to get Cybele to hospital before she bled out after running into that Negaverse General Sylvite, but those were extenuating circumstances. Still, he was delighted that the Knight he'd met this evening turned out to be someone he knew and liked and felt comfortable enough with to power down in front of her. His gut instincts had been right this time.

"So how've you been? I've missed seeing you around while I play. Glad to know you're still playing your ocarina, that makes me really happy."

"Rob!" she cried out as soon as the transformation was done, before he could even say his own name. "I thought, maybe. I was hoping, but something in my head just kept telling me, no that can't be right. It looks like the magic's strong, that protects us, isn't it?"

She'd seen his face, seen his hair, heard his accent and his story, and she'd still been half expecting him to power down into some stranger. This was better than any stranger could be, though.

"Um, yes, I remember you, too! You were so nice to me, all encouraging, and that cafe you took me to was just lovely," she said, and her smile was only widening, reflecting as bright as the stars above. "I wasn't avoiding you or anything, it was winter, that was all. It was too cold to go out much, I was doing most of my work from home."

Others had probably been keeping inside heated buildings, too. She almost had to wonder what the street musicians did to make a living when the weather got bad.

"There was this General, he was saying that he could tell I was still learning, that I needed to practice. Then he attacked my friend, so I'm trying to practice as much as I can so that next time, he'll like the music better."

"Winter isn't the best time for buskers, that's for sure," Rob grinned. He still couldn't believe it – the ocarina should have been a dead giveaway, but somehow the magic that keeps others from knowing a Senshi's (or Knight's) civilian identity was indeed very strong. "I'd usually go out maybe once a week and do winter-themed and Christmas songs, you know, like you do. Rest of the time I stayed home and wrote and rehearsed. Did I tell you I got my band together? Finally found some guys who get what I'm doing. I'm well chuffed by that."

He frowned, though, when Sadie mentioned the critique she'd received at the hands of a General. "I hope the music is part of your magic, cos otherwise I wouldn't give a flying… well, a flying whatever what a General thinks. I'd just as soon beat them into a grease stain on the pavement, but that's me." Rob couldn't imagine Sadie doing anything like that, Knight Pendour or no.

"Enough of Generals and magic and s**t, though," he finished, waving his hand around as if to disperse the negative thoughts. "Music! That's what I wanna talk about. We could go somewhere else to talk some more – That Place is open 24 hours, that's where we went the last time – or we could just stay here. I don't think anyone's going to bother us, the gallery only opens this place for breakfast."

"I know. I shouldn't take it personally," said Sadie, although by the way she was tucking her feet up onto the chair so she could hug her knees, and staring a little distantly at one of the sculptures, it was probably obvious that she was taking it personally anyway. "He's stabbed me and done things to my starseed. I know he doesn't have my best interests in mind, it's just-"

She cut off and shook her head. Rob was talking about violent options. She didn't think he would quite understand why she cared, or what she was trying to do, and from what she'd seen of him so far, she didn't think he was quite ready to hear about it. Not yet.

"Um. Okay. No Generals, no magic. Even if there's overlap between magic and music for me, but we can always talk about what you're doing. You have a band?"

She didn't stop hugging her knees, but she leaned forward, interested. "The Celtic punk one, is that what you said last time? It sounds amazing. You'll have to let me know when you're playing. Oh, and yeah, we can go to That Place. I liked their tea."

A moment passed. Sadie glanced from the edge of the roof to the door that led down to the main gallery, currently locked up for the night. "Although we maybe should have thought about that before we dropped the magic."

Rob didn't want to push the magic/music issue with Sadie, even though he agreed – music was magical in whatever form it took, and magic could be made with music. He came to the conclusion from what she said that somehow playing her ocarina was part of her Knight magic, hence the strong connection between magic and music for her. So he let the issue drop.

He was always happy to talk about himself, though, even when he was trying to be a good friend. "Yeah, the Pict-punk band, Torgo," he grinned. "We've been playing out every now and again at some of the rock and punk clubs around town, and we're working on some new material. Well, we I say, it's mostly me, but I'm letting the lads contribute too. We're coming up with some really interesting stuff."

Sadie said she was interested in going to That Place, so Rob stood and scooted the chair back to where it had been. "Um. Yeah, maybe we should have thought about how to get down…" He peered over the edge of the roof. "Well, we could always power up, jump down, and power back down again," he chuckled.

"Oh, Pict-punk! That's what you called it. Okay. Sorry, my memory's not quite that good," said Sadie, although she didn't seem that worried that she'd forgotten, just happy to talk about his career, which was probably the more interesting music topic, compared to the the way that she picked out the notes of intermediate songs from the rooftops.

Although, as she thought about that, she had to ask, "Can I see what you wrote, sometime? Um, the sheet music, maybe? I don't know that I can do much with the punk, unless I learn to play one of those bass guitars," which wasn't a thought that was bad, really, just one that would take time. "But, with the ocarinas or the other little instruments I've got, I think it would be fun to try the Pict."

Did that make sense as a sentence? She hoped it did.

She also hoped that nobody was watching, because she powered up in a glimmer of mermaid silk and dropped back down to the streets below.
