There was something to be said for a mother's intuition. She knew there was definitely something going on between the young blacksmith and her middle son. She could see it playing out before her as plain as the nose on the end of her face.
The young woman was there again today, waiting for Ushiwa to finish his chores.
Well, she had other ideas.
She strode up to Saeruin and looped her arm through the other woman's.
"Come with me, it is time we got to know watch other."

She had come to the ranch, (one could only call it that), a little early today.
Her eyes flared wide when Ushiwa's mother all but snuck up on her and proceeded to whisk her away from the place she had been watiting for Ush to finish with his chores.
She was quite flustered but did not want to be rude to this intimidatingly efficient woman. She was Ushi's mom after all.
"Er okay."

"Wonderful, come to the house, there is plenty of food left over from breakfast. Young people are always hungry. I'll heat you up some before those Zores come back inside and swallow all the food like the big bull snaptrotters they are. They don't even chew!"
She grinned and lead Sae into the house. This girl was her first prospect at a daughter in law and hse was super excited. It had not escaped her notice that her son and his girlfriend had nearly identical looks of displeasure. She found it cute.

She tried not to be nervous but this powerful woman's opinion mattered to her as no one else's had in years.
She couldnt' afford to mess this up. Nin had managed to work a small smile out of her with her analogies describing her sons as scavengers.
That was in face an accomplishment.
"That sounds lovely." She said shyly.

She plonked a cup of tea in front of the girl.
"You know you have been visiting us for months now and I'm afraid I have been too busy to get to know you. I'm afraid that tends to happen quite often when its spring."
Endless calls for an animal healer when everyone's stock was having babies.
She loved spring but she rarely got enough sleep during it.

"Well much of my past is still a mystery to me even. You see when I was a youngling I was found alone in my parent's cabin in Zena crying."
She swallowed, voicing that memory being still painful.
"My amnesia covers everything before that, besides my parent's faces and my Mother's fierce battle cry. Occassionaly I get minute flashbacks. The healers say it might come back with time or it might not."
She shrugged and added cream and sugar to her tea.

Nin had her own cup of tea half raised to her lips, and it stayed there as she listened to this most disturbing tale.
“I am so sorry to hear that.”
She finally took a sip while she gathered her thoughts.
“Sometimes the mind takes the initiative and protects us from the things in our past. I too was orphaned as a youngling, a shifter man adopted me and then soon after he adopted my sister Ristadis from Zena.”

“Perhaps you and your sister have a better chance of understanding me than I realized.”
She barely tasted the tea in her mouth, which was a pity because it was actually very good tea.
“It is still hard for me to talk about. I wish I could see them one last time. To know what happened , to hug them..one last time. Whatever happened to them it was awful. “

"I won't say it gets easier, I will say that the ache dulls eventually. I made my own family and filled in the holes in my heart but there are still empty spaces where they once were."
She sighed feeling old, but glad that this girl had fallen like a stay to their family where she had people who could help her.
"Is there anyone else from your past?"

She took a deep breath.
"Well, after I was found there was no one to take me. The orphanage people looked for me from what I gather but I ended up staying with the group of orphans who found me."
She fidgeted, wanting to trust this woman who out of every one seemed to have both the power and the willingness to help her.
"We uh, well we were thieves for many years, But when we moved here we made the decision to stop. I don't live with the group anymore and we are all trying to varve out new lives."

"I see well thank you for trusting me enough to tell me, your secret is safe with me. How are the others faring then? Has every one found a new path to take?"
She didn't exactly have that much experience with other professions, they were a people who mostly worked with animals so far. But she was pretty decent at advising people. It came with being a Mother of seven children.

She sighed, relieved that she had judged the woman correctly.
"I think most of them have a good chance of integrating as I have. It is just our leader who is still struggling, it was his idea to move here in the first place. He seems to be cast adrift."
He would likely be livid if he knew, that she had told someone about the gangs secret.
But she was starting to think that he, young as he was needed someone to lean on too.

"I see, well, why don't you bring him by the ranch some time. Perhaps some fresh surroundings will help him get situated." These kids had gone through a really rough time. It sounded like none of them had parents. Such a shame and interesting that it was the kids who had found her first and not the proper authorities. Zena was a harsh place to live, over and above the cold itself.

She could feel the tears p***k her eyes.
"I appreciate that."
She held onto her tea cup like it was a lifeline.
"We really had no one but each other. That is part of the reason I am so grateful to Ushi and your family. I don't feel so alone anymore."
She had had the group, but they had no real answers either.

Nin patted her on the shoulder but then embraced her.
"None of that now, no need to cry. You arn't alone anymore. Don't worry. We will make sure it all comes out right. Between my husband and me I am sure we can get your friend on the right track."
She held the girl tight until she felt a slight stiffening of her posture.
Nin felt the wetness on her shirt and handed the girl a hanky.
