Ushi 1
A warm wind blew the scent of beautiful flowers into this room, it was accompanied by the dawn chorus and the cracking of small eggshells. Well that was nice. Wait. He sat bolt upright. The sailscale wggs were hatching!
He wasted no time in sending word to Saeruin. Ushi could not leave he had to wait with fist fulls of food for the little blighters. He could not stay still however and paced about his room, watching and waiting. It took them quite some time to break the shells and emerge.

Saeruin 1
She rushed to the Beast Charmer property with an extra spring in her step. It was uncommon to see the young blacksmith run, and run she did.
She arrived out of breath and gasping, but she had made it in record time, hopefully she didn't miss any of them.
His voice drew her into the house and she knocked on the door, before entering.
"Have I missed any?"

He grinned brightly as she appeared at the door to his room in the great house that his father had built and then had to add onto as their family grew.
It made him oddly happy to see her here. Like a twang in his heart. "You haven't missed a thing, I woke with the sound of the first crack and the first baby is about to emerge."
He patted the bed where he was watching from.
"If there is a break I'll scurry down and get us breakfast."

"Don't bother, I'm not hungry, I'm too excited, I mean, these eggs wouldn't be here if it were not for us. That sermal could have gotten them, we might have taken them from their Mother but in a way we could very well have saved them from a worse fate. I assume you and the rest will train them and then sell them?"
She was curious about the fate of the hatchlings. Looking at them reminded her of the day she had adopted two zanteer off of a beach. She would have to sent Saoirse a letter soon. Maybe the hybrid would come visit her.

"The first rule of looking after animals, is too look after yourself."
He yelled out into the hallway for food, and a random family member put some bread, cheese and fruit outside the door.
He retrieved it, and then shoved a plate of food at Saeruin.
"There see, problem solved. Breakfast while we watch."
He pointedly took a bite out of his own piece of bread.

She gave him a haughty side eye, because she disliked being told what to do, even if the person telling her was too damn handsome and the orders were for her own good. In that way she couldn't really take upbridge to his attitude.
She took the plate and also took a bite, the taste of the food woke her stomach up and she took more bites.
Soon the plate was finished and the eggs not that much further along.
"How long does it take?"

"It varies, but hatchlings as a rule are very weak when they are first born, an egg takes quite a bit to crack and the only weapon they have upon birth to break it with is a single egg tooth."
"It could take a while in short." He took her hand gently. "However that one egg in the middle there has been cracking since morn, it is what woke me up and what alerted me to the start of the hatching. I wager it is from that egg that we will get our first hatchling."
His body all but hummed with energy. He too had finished a hurried breakfast and they sat in near perfect silence and waited amidst the morning bird calls.

She patiently watched the clutch with Ushiwa's broad, young frame by her side. A thought occurred to her that there was no where else at this moment that she would rather be and that was sort of telling.
Had she at last found a home? A home that was not in Zena, a home that was not with the band of theives. A place for herself in Matori? With the boy who seemed to have haunted her steps since that fateful night in the cherry grove?
She rather felt that she had.

The center egg now had a crack right down the equator. He held his breath as the occupant gave a mighty shove and the top of the egg shell popped right off. Dark scaley hide glistened with egg goo.
"Lookit lookit!" He squealed excitedly, forgetting his usual dour, steady expression. He had latched onto Sae's arm, but kept his grip gentle.
The sailscales tail tip was released first and it backed up onto the table.
"Sae, you may keep a hatchling or three, choose carefully. I will be keeping a few as well, since we got such a bit clutch for Dad."

She smiled deeply at his exuberance. He was even cuter when he let himself go like this and surrendered himself to his emotions. Proof at least that he had them and that sometimes they ruled over the logic and care which he usually displayed at least to her. He was always considerate.
"I can have some?!" Now he wasn't the only excited one.
She couldn't wait to chose after they had hatched. The first hatchling meandered around the other eggs and then flopped down to rest.

"Yes, Dad's way of saying thank you for not pushing me over the cliff I expect. He knows I can be a bit much sometimes."
He grinned, half teasing her. "I reckon I'm not that bad since they still keep me around but that might be to muck out the stables."
He nudged her gently with his shoulder as two more eggs began to break shell.

"Oh well, you were not that bad, you did most of the climbing for both of us if I recall." She giggled and nudged him back. She was startled at the sound, it was so rare for her.
"Look there they go!" Two new hatchlings fair exploded onto the scene, hatching out within mere moments of each other.
"They are so cute."

Ushi smiled. "Aye, they are." Three eggs started to wobble and the room was filled with cheeps and calls as the rest of the clutch got a move on.
"It would be nice if you could stay for a bit and help with them. We will compensate you for your time. Even with a family as big as mine, upwards of twenty one hatchlings will be a lot."
"Mom and Dad will be so pleased, but there are all the other chores and training and critters to look after. The help would be more than well received."

"Yes I will stay. The shop can mind itself for a bit. There is only me after all. And you will compensate me for time and money lost. The nice thing about being a blacksmith is that we are always busy."
Any excuse to spend time here. With the babies...with Ushiwa. He had grown on her...like a wart, a handsome wart or perhaps like fuzzy green moss on a rock.
She found his company pleasant. And if she were being truthful she craved his company, especially when she was at home and felt lonely.

He was doubly delighted that she would stay. With him...in particular. They had grown closer and closer, day by day until he craved her company like the dawn sun or a rain after a parching week. Not that they got that many parched weeks in Matori but that was besides the point.
"See any hatchlings that you like? If you don't mind I will make my first choice, the one that hatched first that green eyed black one."
