More practice. That was clearly what Gismondine needed. THe practice with Ariadne had been…insightful, but again, they hadn’t quite known what they were doing…even if he hadn’t been hurt more than another small scratch…it was progress! Kind of! He hadn’t hurt the senshi, so that was the most important part, not with his weapon at least! She had been far too pretty to cut up anyway, but. Regardless. All progress was something.
He was deep in thought and didn’t realize that there was a very…very tall, very pink someone standing quite close to where he was, and for a moment, he could only stare, mouth open in surprise.
Finally, his brian caught up to the rest of him, and Gismondine raised a hand, still staring, wide eyed. “You’re…one of the um…the aliens? I haven’t…seen one of you in person before…you…”
He thought he was a fair height at five feet eleven inches, but she was taller than she was. And pink!
…It was pretty.
“You’re very tall! I’m um…I’m Gismondine! Would..do…um.”
What was the best way to go about asking a giant woman to spar with you without sounding terribly creepy?
“...Do you fight good?”

Naeria hadn't been paying much attention at all to her surroundings. All of her focus was on a tiny sprout that was pushing its was up through a crack in the concrete of the sidewalk. It was so resilient, she thought. She was going to have to take a lot of pictures so that she could show it to Andreyia and talk about how resilient Earth plants could be. She had her ComTech out, open to the camera app, and she was trying to find an angle where it would show in the dim lighting, when she heard a voice. Someone was talking to her. She whirled, her yellow eyes open wide. He was wearing black, the way the Negaverse agents did. A moment later, her mind processed the words that he was saying. Fighting. He was talking about fighting. Was that a threat? Was he threatening her? Act fast, Andreyia had said, and he'd been promoted to Corporal. He knew what he was doing. Naeria gasped, and then her blaster was in her hand, fast. Then she was pulling the trigger.

Oh. Well…that answered that question. She did fight good!
The blaster bolt hit him right in the chest and Gismondine’s eyes widened in confusion, and as his torso went numb, he wondered if this was what dying felt like, thankfully it didn’t really hurt. “I…I scared you? I’m so sorry!”
He took a few steps backwards, raising his hands in a position of surrender, but then rubbing at his chest with one of them, grimacing. It wasn’t a good feeling, honestly. “You have very good reflexes and aim! And you have a weapon that seems so simple to use…I…I envy you!”
The last thing that Gismondine wanted to do was fight for real. Not with someone who was supposed to be an ally, someone who was supposed to be working with them…or…or something. He wasn’t completely sure what the situation was but…he was doing his best, as he always did.
“I…don’t know how to use mine, I…I got a promotion, and I’ve been trying to spar with people to get better at it…but I see that it was a mistake to ask, and I’m so, so sorry that I scared you…”

Naeria still didn't enjoy seeing the way that people winced after the bolts from her blaster hit them. Of course, she had registered for the Vanguard. That meant she would have to fight in certain situations, but there was still a twinge in her chest every time she shot someone. Especially someone who put their hands up afterwards and seemed almost kind. "I'm sorry," she said, quietly. She might have been a few inches taller than he was, but she didn't carry herself like that fact gave her much confidence. "That was reflex. Some humans have tried hurting me, so-" She trailed off, blinking at him a few times while she looked at him. She still couldn't get past the skulls on his outfit. She couldn't tell if they were meant to be a symbol of death, a threat, or if they simply were there to show a love of nature. She'd assumed the worst, but now he was apologizing. "If I help you get stronger, what will you do?" she asked, after a moment. "I have seen some of your agents try to take starseeds and steal energy. I do not mind sparring but I cannot support that." She knew the Commodore was trying to get them away from starseeds, but she did not know how successful he had been.

He looked alarmed with the statement that people were trying to hurt her, and frowned, worry in his eyes. “Are you okay? Why would they want to hurt you?” But even as Gismondine said it, he knew that it must be because she was an alien. Because she was different. That’s what always happened in the sci-fi movies, wasn’t it? The humans decided that the aliens were all monsters and thus tried to attack them and a big war would start, resulting in planets blowing up or…
…Or something like that.
“What will I do? I’ll be able to better protect my General! She’s the greatest, and she’s so kind, but she’s been sad lately. I just want to show her that I’m not a…a failure. I…see I…I was never cut out for this…and um. I got pulled in so that I would die instead of someone else but…but I didn’t die…and he did so…um…I just want to be better. And people keep trying to hurt me too. Trying to kill me…so I do understand…it…it’s scary.”

"I am not sure," said Naeria, which was the truth. She had her theories about what had happened that night they'd tried charging the weapon, and then how that had changed things afterwards, but she wasn't certain about how that had affected people's opinions of her. "I think there are complicated politics involved." This was not about her, though. She listened to his story, blinking twice when he said that he had been recruited strictly to die in place of someone else. Hearing that did not raise her opinion of the Negaverse. The tightness in her chest softened as she listened, though. This boy was trying. She did not think she had to be scared of him. "I am not really a fighter either," she told him. "I am much better at research, and science, but I am also trying to learn some in case I have to protect myself and others." Slowly, she smiled at him. "Show me how you fight."

Gismondine gave a shy, almost uncertain smile and held his hands out, palms up. His weapon appeared in them, laying across his outstretched hands. “If you’re more…focused on research, do you have any ideas how I um…might be able to bes use this…ah…without causing damage to myself? I keep…I keep trying but I’ve ended up getting cut so many times…and when I’m sparring with a friend or…or something I don’t want to really hurt them…It’s…just very complicated, I think…”
He swallowed and looked utterly downcast. “I’m really just not cut out for this, that’s the only thing that I can really think of. I’m…” He looked as though he might cry and after a moment rubbed his stinging eyes with his sleeve. “...I don’t know…why I’m um. Bothering you with this but sometimes I wish I had just died when I was supposed to. Or any of the other times that senshi almost did…I…I’m not good for the Negaverse. I’m not really good for anything.”
And then he was sobbing, all of his insecurities pouring out in front of this poor alien girl who was afraid of him. Who had attacked him for thinking he was dangerous.

Naeria did look over the curve of his weapon, trying to think of a way to hold it that help keep him from cutting himself. It reminded her somewhat of Velryia's scythe, but it was too small to hold in both hands like that. Her analysis was interrupted when he began to sob. She blinked at him. Oh no. She did not know how to deal with this. She did not know how to talk to humans anyway, and if this one was upset, but not upset in a way that was making him fight her, she did not know what to think or say at all. If it was one of her fellow Velencyans, she might have tried offering a hug, but it did not quite seem appropriate to hug someone who you had just shot. "Don't fight, then," she said instead. "Don't hurt anyone. Your recruitment was forced and your treatment under the Negaverse sounds like it has been less than ethical. You do not owe them anything, especially if they make you feel worthless." Her tone was even, bordering on flat, but she sat down cross-legged the way humans did sometimes when they were talking.

Gismondine took a few minutes to force back his tears but looked up at Naeria after they did and wiped his eyes.
Don’t fight? She made it sound so very easy…if only she knew. It wasn’t easy at all. “I…It does sound like…like a good idea. But. I’m not…not sure that I could do that, really…I…they kill those who don’t k-keep up. I don’t want to die. That’s…that’s why I’ve…tried so hard to stick to my work…and…and to be better.”
He rubbed his face and drew in a long breath. “I…will just work harder. That’s…that’s all. I’ll work harder and…I’ll get stronger and…I’ll survive…”
Survive and grow and…protect the people he cared about. Like his General and Xander. If Xander ever came home, that was.
…One of these days…he’d have to move on but.
But he couldn’t stomach the thought quite yet.

They killed people who could not or would not learn combat? Naeria could do little more than blink again. That seemed cruel, of course, but also inefficient. Did they really not know that people could have strengths in areas that did not involve direct combat? Did they not know, as a simple, basic rule, that willing soldiers were more ethical and more productive than unwilling ones? "Survive," she repeated, because she could not think of anything else to say for a moment there. Another few seconds passed before she added, "That is a good goal to have. It is one of mine as well. If you need help with it, I will see what I can do." Although it turned out combat training with exotic Earth weapons was not something she could help with. Especially when her mind was spinning with thoughts of just how flawed this military that Commodore Lyndin had allied himself with was.

Gismondine nodded and whipped at his eyes again. “Yeah…yeah I’ll keep trying then. Thank you…and um. Thank you for listening…I. He swallowed and gave a little, weak smile. “...I…I’ll see you later…I hope.” He hesitated for just a moment longer, wanting to ask if they could be friends, wanting to do…something. Something that didn’t make him feel like such a fool but…
All he really could do was give what passed for another smile and teleport away.
Survive. It was such a simple word but the act of actually doing so…was so incredibly hard. But…
He could do it.
At the very least he could try.
