It was early spring - there was still a n** in the air, and you could leave the house in the morning with a coat, but by the time mid-day hit, you were throwing it off, just to put it on again as the sun set. Of course, Jethro was a 'cargo shorts year-around' kind of guy - tall, built but not sculpted, definitely soft and comfortable as a firm pillow, but also a formidable figure to those who didn't know him, or that didn't catch him with a smile, which he normally wore all day at his job so he didn't scare away the customers. His long dark brown, almost black, hair was pulled back in to a low ponytail that day, and people at work hadn't been able to miss that little worried furrow to his brow as he tried to cheerily work his little bakery in the bustling tourist section of DC.

How could he not be worried? His little puffy princess was at the vet!

After a trip to the groomer yesterday had revealed a mysterious growth, he promptly took Snuggle to the vet to have it biopsied. Everyone had high hopes that it was benign. The little Pomeranian was as sweet, happy, and active as ever after all. Not a sign of illness to be had! Jethro had left her with the vet over night, and had gotten the call to come pick her up and receive results just an hour ago. He had been watching the clock closely ever since, and trying to see if he could get away with closing up early. The person on the phone had relayed that blood work came back perfect, so that had eased some of his nerves a bit, but he wasn't given any further news other than that. It was getting later. He knew the vet's office would close just before nightfall, and tourist traffic would start to die down with the sun as well.

Finally, there was a break in customers and the storefront was emptied. He hastily made his way to the front door, locked it, and turned the sign to 'closed.' He called to the few employees in the back (they'd been lightly staffed today, being the slow middle of the week) who he trusted to lock up when they were done. The employee knew why Jethro had been so antsy all day. They all loved Snuggle, and wished them well.

Soon Jethro was up at the vet's office as fast as his comically tiny blue Miata could take him and brought to one of the small examining rooms. Everyone seemed cheerful enough, but now that he was here nothing could really help his nerves. He was told someone would be right in with Snuggle, but before he could ask for the news they were gone. Fair enough. There were other people here with their pets as well, full examining rooms and not enough vets or techs to go around. So he'd wait. At least they'd bring him Snuggle so they could then wait for the vet together.

He had no doubt that his princess had behaved. She was a good girl. Always friendly, not overly rambunctious. A bit of an actress through. A drama-queen. But this was perhaps her most dramatic role yet.

Bear tapped his foot and drummed his fingers on the examining table as her waited.

"Awwww, come on Miss Snuggle! Your last shot wasn't that bad!" A surprisingly quiet December whispered to a fluffy pup in his arms. The Veterinarian Assistant paced back and forth in the back room, giving the last bit of calming down before her papa arrived. And perhaps, it was for his own comfort too. Thus far it had been another rough, long day at the clinic... So many accidents, so many people deciding that it was still best to just let their animals wander around at night...

Legs broken, biting incidents, and even an old, gentle soul whom had to be put down... It weight far too heavily on the young man's mind. As proud and thankful as he was for this job, the only one he seemed to be able to hold onto, it broke his heart the longer he remained here. Only moments like this where the pup in his arms was all well and good, in perfect health, and not angrily yipping at him was he able to simply let everything flow out of his mind.

And it were those save moments he found himself wishing that this alone was the worst thing on his mind. Nothing was simple in the Negaverse. It almost seemed.. Hypocritical to be working at a place of healing when there was so much emphasis on taking and death. The powerlessness that came from such a feeling was only soothed by the fact that he was a General now, with a youma he loved and truly was working towards curing... He could do something.. He could genuinely bring his dear friend back, and show that there was so much more to the world than simply youmafication and death.

The final thought crossed his mind when a bell rung, and the name "Snuggle/Kodiak" Flashed across the light up screen in the back, directing him to Examination Room 4. December himself was no Vet but was well trained in providing accurate information and the Doctor's diagnosis, and could usually get people in and out with no issue.

"Papa's back now, Miss Snuggle, you'll get to go home soon!" A tiny peck was given to the little pom's head, before he made his way to the room and knocked on the door lightly before peeking his head in.

"Good Afternoon, Mr. Kodiak!" December beamed whiled stepping fully into the room. The moment that little Snuggle saw her Papa, her tail began wagging like crazy. Yet it was not time to put her down on the floor, as with all properly done things, the Examine table came first. Lightly, of course, with tons of tiny pets to her fluffy little head. Despite his entrance into the room, he had yet to look up from the clipboard in his hand, to make sure he got every wording, every moment of this right. No one wanted to be held in suspense over the wellbeing of their beloved family member!

"I want to say outright, sir, that Snuggle is in tip top shape! It'll disappear over time, as with most button tumors in young dogs like herself. We did a double biopsy to make sure. And she's a super good girl! Just watch out a bit for those sweeter treats though, since Poms tend to have a few issues with their teeth, but all is good!"

Snuggle was a sweetie - even though she lived a lavish pillow-princess life, doted on by all and spoiled rotten, she was very well behaved, and especially cuddly with the more emotionally fragile ones. Often she would be in the bakery, keeping to her special area, but often petted and cooed at by strangers of all kinds, but it was always the soft ones that she gave a little extra sweetness to. So she was SUPER EXTRA sweet to December for what little time they'd had together that day.

Jethro didn't even have a glance to spare at the slight figure of the vet assistant that came in with his little princess - as soon as she was on the table, his hands were all over her, petting, rubbing her little ears, squishing her cheeks, as he smiled and cooed sweet words at her. Snuggle tippy-tap danced in a circle, having missed her big Papa Bear. The little cinnamaroll of a tail bobbed side to side as fast as it could go.

When the vet assistant started talking, Bear quieted down, serious-yet-anxiously-nervous-face back on but kept his petting, although now a much more casual petting, as snuggle laid down. Relief washed over him, and he nodded at the other remarks, although with the biggest worry out of the way, he was now less distracted and actually got a look at the person on the other side of the examining table.

It wasn't something Jethro liked to advertise, for fear that people would think him some sort of a creep, but he did have a thing for more youthful looking guys. A sweet and adorable face got him every time. In total contrast to his own appearance, he simply loved cute and smol things in general, though. All that to say, along with the happy news, the boyish face of the assistant was a real highlight for the day.

"That's great to hear!" Jethro beamed with a large, broad, smile across his face, jade eyes sparkling as he looked away from December and back to Snuggle who looked back with her dark button-like eyes, then to December, who she reached a paw at before looking back up at Jethro. Whatever she was trying to communicate was lost in translation though.

"I'll make sure she doesn't taste test too many of the doggy baked goods back at the shop."

It took a few more glances of his chart to make sure there was nothing else amiss before December finally turned his gaze up to look at the owner.

And up... And up... Until finally his own lavender eyes met with jade, and blinked quite a few times. Only once before had he met someone so... tall, and even then it was a shock! Especially given how it seemed that this man was the owner of something so small and fragile! It was hard to look away from someone so... Stunning. They were impressive and strong, a stark contrast to his own scrawny self, which seemed to never pack on much of anything despite poor eating habits and working out.

Yet he wasn't jealous about their differences. In fact, There was something incredibly comforting about the fact that little Snuggle seemed more than a little happy to see him though. That genuine affection and faith a dog had in a person couldn't be mistaken for anything else. No quivering, No ignoring, just happiness to be back with the human she loved.

.... Good. GOOD! Maybe this day would finally have some happy moments after all that tragedy.

The paw didn't go unnoticed, and December reached back out to give her one more little pet on the head. As sweet as she was, he couldn't keep her. Maybe one day he'd get someone who'd love him like this dog loved this man, but not today!

"A snack now and then is good for moral! But just brush her teeth when you can. Though I can already tell you're very, very kind to her! Look how happy she is! ... Wait, did you say bakery? With pet treats? We always get questions about the best and healthiest snacks to give to our clients' lil' pet babies, so if you'd ever want to stop by and try them out here, you're welcomed to! I'm sure the long term patients here would love a bit of home cooked happiness!" Before he realized it, he was giving out invitations and it only hit him when he heard a buzzer ring that maybe he was overstepping.

"O-oh, uh... Or you can leave your card and I can stop by myself to pick up a few! Supporting local business you know!" On his own dime, not the company card. Would it be considered leisure instead of work, honestly he didn't know. It wasn't as if he was going to eat the treats after all.

Witha soft laugh Jethro replied, "Yeah, she's pretty spoiled - everyone's favorite little mascot of Teddybear Picnic," and presented a business card out of the wallet he'd fished out of his back pocket.

It was a simple but cute card with treats, bears and gingham, along with all the standard info.

"We mainly cater to the tourists, but a lot of them visit DC with their dogs, and since I was already making homemade goodies for Snuggle, I decided to add them to the shop. I try to keep everything pretty fresh, and even though she'd love to help polish off the leftovers, it's a bit more than she needs."

Snuggle looked up at her owner with a 'as if,' look on her face. She'd eat all the treats if she could. No regrets.

"I'd be glad to load you up with some treats! I already offload a lot of the people-goods via donation. A little tax write-off never hurts." he winked. His reply was sunny and warm. If December was over-stepping, Jethro didn't seem to care. The enthusiasm towards his business was always appreciated and encouraged.

He was lucky that with good business, and having come to learn the proper amount to prepare for a day - barring an unusual influx of people wanting a certain hot new seasonal flavor - that he didn't end up with too much waste. That said, he didn't believe in throwing out perfectly good food just because it was more than a day old. What didn't sell in the 'day-old bargain grab bag' would be loaded up to take to be distributed to a local homeless shelter.

Of course, he also ended up eating a good bit of it too. He probably shouldn't ingest quite so many carbs but protein, even in all it's various forms, could be a rather dull staple for a strongman.

“Teddybear Picnic? Like the little lullaby?” That sounded even cuter Than anything he had imagined it could be. With her haircut, the little Snuggle seemed Iike the perfect mascot for such a place, only beaten out if he had an actual bear cub as his pet. … Though he was fairly certain that having a bear as a pet in the tri-state area was illegal… He made a thought in the back of his mind to look it up later, just incase.

December took the card, flipping it around in his fingers a few times with a small smile on his face. Everything about the place seemed warm and inviting… A place that would be just as good on card as it was in person. A warm, happy feeling came to his chest at the thought of visiting, especially if the man here was there to greet him.

“Well then, I’m sold! You sound like you take your business very very seriously! That’s admiral, I have to say, and I think It would be a fun time to come by. Maybe if I’m lucky, It’ll be a moment of slowness so we can chat more too. Uh… Though i suppose a slow time all the time is bad for business, isn’t it? Ahahaha….” A sheepish smile took up residence on his face as the buzzer went off again, and he gazed at the door, knowing their time was nearly up.

“For now, I think we have to say goodbye, sir. I have to give back the next little sweetie to their family. But I really, truly do hope I get to see you again, Mr. Jethro…”

"Yup!," Jethro nodded in confirmation, "The particular tourist area I'm located in is one of the more rustic-themed ones, at the base of the mountain. It has more of an old-country feel, so a lot of shops have some sort of theme with bears, deer, and abundance of antlers that would make Gaston jelous," He half-laughed and smiled brilliantly.

"I wanted to go with a bit of a cuter theme. I guess the gingham at least ties it in with the other shops, haha!"

He beamed at the praise from December and he gently scooped Snuggled up in his arm, where she resumed her usual 'football hold' position with her owner's large hand supporting her fluffy chest. Her little ears perked when the buzzer went off. What a horrible sound! Woof!

"I look forward to seeing you! Late afternoons tend to be pretty slow, so drop by after work sometime for a pick-me-up!" He was sure this job here at the vet's office wasn't always so pleasant, and he'd gladly keep the store open later if it meant cheering someone up.

"Bye-" Oh, he hadn't gotten the cute guy's name....and now they were out of tie and it would be awkward and...he'd sneakily get it next time they met! Or ask the desk clerk on his way out. Yeah! That was a better idea! "I hope to see you soon, but not here, too! Have a good day - say bye, Snuggle!"

Jethro lifted one of Snuggle's paws and gently made her 'wave' as they made their way out of the room.
