Backdated to early March, 2022. There had been so many people offering Caedus a place to stay, that sometimes Oberon wondered if he would ever see him again, or if he would be locked away, in hiding. Especially when even those in the White Moon wanted him to give up his starseed to the Cauldron before figuring out another option.
So many things had happened over the years that seemed hopeless, but one way or another managed to get resolved. Most notably Valhalla’s starseed, which he’d previously talked to Caedus about, years ago.
Now, Oberon set out through the woods, not necessarily expecting to find anyone, but hoping nonetheless.
Ganymede had been missing for so long that that seemed like a hopeless cause. But Oberon knew he couldn’t just sit around and mope on Haven’s couch for days on end. At least when he wasn’t out looking for any information he could glean.

Caedus was a creature of habit, and even with the occasional offering of a place to stay, he had a hard time staying in any one place for long. Sometimes, just the sounds of the city bothered him. Sometimes he just needed to get away and wander somewhere quiet, somewhere private. Oberon was lucky that he’d chosen one of the nights Caedus had drifted back to his old haunts. The weather was more pleasant now than it had been in the recent months, and Caedus had long since abandoned his cloak and replaced it with something a bit more modern; he had a long black coat and had the hood turned up. It was a bit windy, and there was the smell of rain on the wind. He probably wouldn’t have looked so very out of place if he’d been closer to town, but he was keeping his distance. For now. There was something beautiful about the outskirts of the city, and he’d settled himself on a large rock so he could watch the sky. Sometimes, just the lights of the city. Right now, the stars.

“You’re lucky I’m not one of the ones who want you dead,” Oberon sighed heavily when he realized the tall, hooded figure was Caedus. Of course it was Caedus. He’d hoped to find him around that area, and he was lucky that he was there at the right time.
But he kept his distance for the moment. He’d announced his presence of course, but he didn’t want to make Caedus feel threatened, especially after his comment.
“Can I join you? Or I can stay here,” he gestured to where he was standing several feet away.
“I was looking for you, actually. I know Ganymede hasn’t exactly been agreeable with you, but the Negaverse took her. I’ve been trying to find a way to save her. Do you… would it be possible to open up a portal? Like before?” It was a long shot, but he had to try.

Caedus didn’t feel lucky, being reminded that there were plenty of people who wanted him dead. He bristled, guarded and flighty, and might have even been ready to bolt if he hadn’t recognized who it was. “Oberon,” he greeted, as relieved as he was on edge. He was still stiff but he hadn’t run. “You may join me,” he answered, scooting over just a bit on the rock to make room. “But only if you are willing to tolerate bad news.” He sat up straight; his hands were in his lap and he looked at Oberon cautiously, because even if he didn’t expect him to attack him, he hadn’t expected Lyndin, either. “I had to gather energy before to open that portal. I doubt I would have much help if I asked again.”

“Damn,” Oberon sighed as he hoisted himself up on the rock next to Caedus. He would just have to figure out another way to help Ganymede.
“It was worth a try. I didn’t know you were a Senshi. Or… unawakened. Did you think it was better if people didn’t know? I know most of us aren’t really that trustworthy, but we usually mean well. Well… some of us do,” he said with a small grimace.
He wore gloves, and the jacket he wore covered his arms. He wasn’t there to make Caedus feel guilty or bad or… anything. He did like Caedus, and thought it was his decision for whatever happened.
“You’re not just living out here, I hope. I thought the others were offering you a place to stay,” he recalled the conversations on the Moon. There were at least a couple others who mentioned housing the other Velencians that went with them. Maybe Caedus was just clearing his head out here.

Caedus laced his fingers together and seemed to hunch forward a little bit. He sighed, and though it came out a quiet whisper, it sounded as weary as he looked. “I travel often,” he answered, because that was the easiest thing to focus on. “I cannot stay in the same place for long. I fear overstaying my welcome. Or attracting unwanted attention.” It would have been a cruel punishment to inflict on his hosts. It was harder to answer the rest of it, and Caedus visibly seemed uncomfortable, if not outright guilty, of his secrets. “I am not a Senshi,” he reminded softly. “I did not think it would be relevant in any of our previous conversations. It is not that you are untrustworthy. It is that I am ashamed. I cannot awaken. And you can see what that has done for me. My people hate me. I cannot blame them. I did not want you to hate me, too.”

“It’s easier to hate people than trying to find a solution,” Oberon shrugged, even if he could understand why people would hate Caedus.
“I don’t know much about your culture or world… worlds, or whatever. But I hope they’re still looking for a way to either help you awaken or find another way to fix the problems they have without having to, you know, murder you.”
Maybe that was a bit harsh, but Oberon wasn’t about to let Caedus wander around thinking everything was good. Just like he warned him that Castor wanted him dead, before he decided if he wanted to talk to him alone or not.
“I’m still on your side, for whatever that’s worth,” Oberon promised as he laced his gloved hands together.
“If we found a way for you to awaken… would you want to?”

Caedus tried to offer an apologetic smile, but it came out as an uninspiring grimace. The expression faded and he sighed heavily, adjusting his position so one elbow was on his knee. He rested his forehead in his palm and sighed. “I suppose.” He didn’t sound very enthusiastic about the prospect. “I think it would be another way to disappoint everyone. I fear what my starseed might become. Everyone that has put such hope into this may find it a wasted effort. It aches. It burns. I do not know what they think they can get out of it. Sometimes it feels as if there is lightning in my chest.” He sighed, and with his free hand he rubbed at it. “Sometimes emotions make it worse. When my heartbeat is fast, it is particularly unpleasant. But in an ideal situation, if there was a way to awaken? …I would do my best, I suppose. I tried, when I was younger. I was desperate to. I wanted to save my world. I still do. But I do not know that my life or death is capable of as much. If there were any other way, I would want to do that. I was hoping that there was an answer here on Earth. The Senshi have been restoring their world, but–” He cut himself off, because maybe he realized that he was thinking about how the Senshi had success with reviving their worlds. “...If I could awaken, I would try to do the same. But I do not have such faith in myself. I worry that it is wasted time and effort. I know my starseed is damaged. I have hope that there is away other than that. I am trying to find it. Though, my research is limited to those who will help me. I do not have much information on what the others are working on. But, I appreciate you, Oberon. Your words are kind. It is a relief to have a friend to talk to.”

The suggestion of it feeling like lightning in Caedus’ chest made Oberon shift a little and twist his hands over one another. It sure felt like lightning to touch, so that wasn’t surprising to hear that it felt that way.
Oberon was quiet as he listened to Caedus as he worked through his thoughts out loud. He wanted to offer him as little judgment and scrutiny as possible, since it seemed like there was a lot of that going around. It didn’t matter how he felt about everything. It mattered how Caedus felt. Because unless Caedus was willing to do something on his own, they were no better than the Negaverse forcing someone to do something against their will.
“You’ll have my support, no matter what,” he nodded. “If we find a way for you to awaken and you decide to do that, then we’ll help you restore your world. I’ve seen a lot of miraculous things happen while I’ve been a Senshi. Things that shouldn’t have been possible, but happened anyway. That’s why I’m certain Ganymede will get out. One way or another. Just hopefully sooner than later.”
He let out a quiet sigh, but flashed Caedus a little grin anyway. “Need any energy? You should take some of mine. My magic will help replenish it enough for me to get back home and then I’ll have a great night’s sleep. I promise. Just… don’t give up on all of us just yet.”

Oberon’s kindness visibly touched Caedus, and when he looked at him it seemed as though some of his frayed edges had softened. He nodded, as hopeful for Ganymede’s safe return as he was for a resolution to his situation. He wanted salvation for his people, his world. “I will not give up on you,” he promised softly. “Your words give me strength. I am not at my best, but if you are offering energy, I will make good use of it. I will hope for something miraculous in the future. If there is some way to awaken,” he was quite for a moment and then nodded. “...I would try, Oberon. I would try anything. But I am not ready to die.” They didn’t even know if his death would do anything. He was especially not ready to die for nothing.
