While out and about the islands, Ephrym had picked up a few interesting things from the locals. The hybrid had a rough initial encounter upon his arrival in Kahikina, the isles of Pale’iko greeting him with one of the worst storms his ship had ever endured and throwing him overboard. Now though he had more chances to interact with the river settlers at least. Originally the natives were somewhat shy towards the foreigners until Ephrym and his crew had settled in for a few days to trade what they could and restock their own supplies for further travel towards the other settlements. Ephrym had managed to sway some with stories and by helping out around the settlement in his freetime and now he was even gifted a little device that they allowed others to play with, something more useful to some that could go deep into the waters but surely he could find something along the shores of their river. Ephrym held the sifter up towards the sun with a wide grin. He hadn’t seen one of these since he was younger in Belrea! Back home it had seemed like simple sport to compete against his sister and see what they could find but over here it was truly a good idea since there could be numerous treasures foreign to Belrea that would be worth a lot upon his return. The Misty Maiden most definitely could use some repairs and touch ups after her rough ride during that crazy storm and Ephrym was already imagining what precious pearls and gems he could recover to help fund such an upgrade once they returned to their home docks. The Kahi had been nice enough to help touch up his ship even though he had to wonder how strange it must be to some of the more amphibious people who could actually swim their way to the next settlement without needing such a bulky vessel that rode upon the waters.
“What do you think, Neil?” Ephrym glanced over at the other Geian who was wading in the river alongside of him, the boy’s pants were pulled up to his shins while he also held a sifter in his own hands. Like Ephrym his green hair was pulled back into a short ponytail and he wore a simple vest over a light cotton shirt to try and combat the island’s hotter weather. His marking though was a series of interlocking curves, almost like chains, that dipped down from the right side of his face and curved around his neck where they slowly started reaching across his collarbone.
“I think I’d rather be trying some ale back home, but this is okay.” Quipped back Neil who shrugged when Ephrym shot him a look. “What? I can only have so many fishy delicacies before longin’ a bit fer the comforts of home.” The man grinned as they both came from the same southern region of Belrea where the agricultural district thrived so Ephrym understood what he was missing while they were out here across the ocean. Other than just crops though the families down there were famous for their home cooked meals and alcohol. “But I ‘spose diggin’ up some gemstones will be worth it.”
“Fair enough.” Ephrym chuckled as he moved further against the current, his muscles tense as he fought to keep the river from pushing him back. They were thankfully far away enough from the waterfalls that cascaded into a valley below, but it would not be productive if he kept moving back instead of grabbing the riversilt in front of him. “Let’s just try and see what we can find.” The afternoon passed fairly quietly, the pair of them grabbing a few things with Neil hitting actual gold which he continuously bragged about while Ephrym just found some interesting rocks here and there.
Eventually though something shimmering with a myriad of colors ranging from purples to orange caught Ephrym’s attention. “Look at that!” Even if the small stone fit roughly into his palm the gemstone was very unique and surely rare. The captain grinned as he held it out towards Neil. “I think I got my find for the day. Surely this can get a few gold pieces back home whenever some jeweler appraises it.” He had never seen something like this before and didn’t even know if it was common in Kahi! It looked like nothing he had ever seen before! Ephrym tucked it carefully into his satchel and after a few more rounds of digging through the river the pair would return back to town to trade some of what they found before rejoining the crew back at the Misty Maiden.
