There was always work to do at the sanctuary. Even when he was home from a long work trip, Kuno was expected to do his share. Didn't mean he wouldn't find a way to slack on his chores. After carrying the bag of seed over to the kinfa's feeder, he climbed onto one kinfa's back and idly stroked its vibrant feathers while his mind wandered. Feathers... there were earthlings sprouting feathers at random. If he hadn't seen it with his own eyes on one of his trips, he would never have believed it. It wasn't only feathers either! Some had vines, some had claw-like hands, and some even found their crystals change color. He had heard of such things happening before, but it had always just been stories. What would he do with feathers growing from his own body? "They didn't have enough to fly like you," he murmured to the kinfa, fluffing its feathers playfully. "You'd be out of a job if that started happening." The kinfa only replied with a disinterested chirp while it focused on pecking at the feed bag.

Ever since coming north Mero had done her best to make herself useful. When she wasn't practicing her craft she was either apprenticing with local midwives or tending to whatever needed done around the sanctuary. She may have been useless when it came to the animals (a skill of which she was decidedly unwilling to learn) she was all too practiced at domestics. If they were kind enough to help her then the least she could do was wash a few linens and cook. That being said when certain members of this family were in she found her jobs becoming more difficult. Young appetites were voracious, more bodies meant more dirt on the floors and the amount of muck she'd had to scrub off trousers was insane... With a basket full of fresh food balanced on a thin hip, Mero made her way out to where she'd last seen Kuno. She'd expected to see him working with the animals, but seeing him atop a kinfa was as concerning as it was heart stopping. He looked so coo- He'll break his neck on that thing."What could ever have more feathers than a kinfa?" She questioned playfully before motioning to the basket. "Lunch is ready."

Brow rising at a delightfully familiar voice, Kuno's automatic but genuine grin rose. Of the things he had done in his life so far, inviting Mero to stay at the sanctuary had to be in the top five! Of course he'd gone and gotten work with a traveling crew, but when he was home... "I wouldn't be surprised if something out there did," he mused as he slid off the kinfa's back. He gave it one last pat as he walked away. Food! "Thanks!" he chirped, quickly scooting over to the wash basin to clean his hands. "Actually, I was thinking about things with fewer feathers." He glanced over his shoulder to gauge Mero's reaction. "Like people with feathers, you know?"

While Kuno washed up, Mero moved to a little shaded around that she could set up. A few smoothed out stones that had clearly been used for seating in the past resided in a semi-circle and she did her best to make it cozy for a lunchtime break. While some of her meals were much heartier this one wasn't; a lighter salad, filled with as many fresh spring greens as she could find and bits of nuts for protein. A few berries, some sauces for flavor and bam. Once she had things ready, Mero tucked her skirts underneath her and sat. Her eyes drifted to Kuno as he finished up and only when he talked about feathers on people did they furrow. "You've been spending time with some odd people, Kuno. Whoever told you something like that?"

Kuno gave an amused smirk. "Yeah, they're an interesting bunch.. but I'm serious. I saw it m'self!" He grabbed the towel to wipe his hands and headed to where Mero was setting up. On my last job, we met this guy with feathers coming off his shoulders and arms. I'm pretty sure they were on his ankles too, but he was wearin' a long robe an' I was busy." His boss was cool, but sure didn't abide any slacking. He raised his hand to point a finger at Mero. "An' before ye tell me it was decoration, it sure wasn't. Those were growing right outta his skin. That moron Jesper tried to grab one; he's lucky he still had his own hide after that."

Mero shook her head. "Kuno, people don't just have feathers." Her tone was a mixture of patronizing and outright exhausted. "We aren't birds; we don't need them. It would be like your sister having fur." Which might not be so far out of the realm of possibility where Teagan was concerned. Honestly, it was like that girl wanted to see her hair turn grey... When he pointed a finger at her Mero raised both of her hands, palm up, as if to concede. Which they both knew she would never do. "Alright, alright, let's pretend they were real. Doesn't it seem odd that one man out of thousands has feathers? Didn't that strike you as a little weird?"

With an excited lick of his lips, Kuno started helping himself to the leafy salad, not hesitating to scoop out a few extra berries either. Comparing the feathers to Teagan having fur made him snort with amusement. "To be fair, people do have fur in their own way," he mused, reaching over to lightly brush a strand of Mero's hair. Such pretty hair... Pretend? He sighed dramatically and shook his head. He knew that if their positions were reversed, he'd have a difficult time believing her.. "O'course it's weird. That's what makes it interesting. He said he ain't the only one though. I guess other old folks are sprouting things like feathers an' spikes an' even fins! He thought is has something ta do with their blood." He took a bite of his meal and sighed contently. Simple, but oh-so tasty.

Mero made sure to portion out her salad just so so and kept more of a focus on the green bits over the sweeter berries. She'd just lifted a bit to her lips when he reached over to touch her hair and a flushed decorated her skin. It was still so...incredibly odd to have someone think of her hair as a 'good' thing instead of something to pick on. Flustered, she couldn't even think of a good response and thus shoved her food into her mouth. "Their blood?" She murmured. Something about that seemed eerily familiar and when it dawned on her Mero reached over to put a hand on his bicep for a moment. "Oh! Mother told me a story about something like that when I was little." Pulling back, she crossed one leg primly underneath her skirt so she could turn to face him better. "There once was a farmer whose family struggled for years. The village called him a fool because green things just don't grow in Sauti, but in his heart he knew it would work. So, everyday he prayed to Chi. Even when his wife left him with his kids and the land dried up he prayed. Then, rain came and his crops grew. When his eldest son came home to check on him there was a field surrounding their old home and his father had crystals the color of blood. He was dead, you know...he was too old to tend to anything on his own anymore but he had a smile on his face, a full belly and those deep, deep crystals."

His mouth was already filled with salad when he felt the touch to his arm, and he couldn't help peering at her face. Did she like what she felt? Did she even notice? ..What was he, some horny teenager?! Kuno shook his head to pay attention to the story Mero was telling. By the end, a chill had gone down his back. "I can't tell if that's inspiring 'r creepy," he said with a snort. He couldn't imagine abandoning his family for some dirt. "But is it just a story, or does your ma think it was real?"

"Honestly? I'm not sure. The village is small and we've all worshipped Bergchi for as long as I can remember but that story seems a little too magical." Dipping her fork back into the wooden bowl, Mero gathered a bit of food and before she popped it into her mouth, she added, "If mother ever believed it she never told me."
Since she'd made a fair living watching over the village's children as they worked, her mother knew a variety of stories meant to educate and charm children. Whose to say that wasn't exactly what she'd done to her own daughter?

"Hmm. They do say most stories start from something that actually happens, so maybe there's a little truth to it. Probably not much, but maybe a little. Those feathers though.. those were real as the nose on your face." Kuno nabbed another mouthful of salad and chewed thoughtfully. "I think I'd prefer some magic ability rather than some fancy feature. To make food grow where nothing else can? That'd be lots more useful than some spiky shoulders." Besides, he already had spikes on his body!

While still not entirely convinced, Mero gave a proud little 'hmm' and chewed on her own mouthful of salad. Feathers and fantastical things? They were as ridiculous and foolish to think about as blood red crystals! If you spent all your time wondering about things like that then what you had would just slip away. Still...She had to nod when Kuno talked. "If...I had to have something like that then I suppose a practical trait would make the most sense. If I could make something grow then we wouldn't have to worry about food and my name would be spread so far that the best mages would beg to learn from me."
Clearly instead of the other way around. His comment about spikes brought a smile out, though. "I don't know; if you could grow them even a little then I could skewer meat and vegetables on them for cooking."

The comment about the other mages made Kuno smile. Mero sure had some fire to her. "Hmm, maybe it's good ya don't know how to do that. With so many mages around ya, I'd never get to see ya again without a fight." While he knew he would be more than able to throw a punch on Mero's behalf, he got the feeling that she wouldn't be all that pleased with it. Better to not need to do any fighting around her. His brow rose with surprise at the tease, and a light laugh rose. Of course, a coy smirk quickly followed and he leaned forward playfully with a wag of his eyebrows. "I've had a few ladies call me hot before, but I gotta say that's a new one to me."

"You say that like you might lose." She smirked. Using her utensil as a pointer, she motioned to his muscular physique. "With all the magic in your family I'm sure you're used to dodging spells by now. Get in close, knock out a skinny wizard and whisk me away like a queen." Of course, only after she'd proven herself. Once that was out of the way she'd be gladly carried away like the jewel she was. "Don't get used to it." Popping in another mouthful of salad, the hybrid sat back to relax and ponder things.
