After the trip from Oba to Tale, Nicias wasn't sure what he thought of traveling anymore. That wasn't completely true, he had loved every minute of it. It had just been a lot...different than his life at home. A good different but still one that would take some getting used to. He had decided to stay in a larger town this time and upon asking around some of the locals pointed him towards one of the larger inns. Nic was ready for a bath and some sleep but his stomach required told him none of those options mattered. Especially after he smelled the delicious food coming from the kitchen. "mmmm..." He groaned as his stomach growled. "Welcome in!" A voice called. It wasn't long before he saw a middle aged woman weaving her way through tables on her way towards him. He nodded his head in greeting. "I need two rooms please. And a plate of whatever it is you're making in the kitchen." The woman smiled kindly at him before giving him a once over. "Come have a seat! It's not often we get such nicely dressed Obans in our part of town! Except for one other patron, that is. Come, I think they're here tonight. I'll sit you next to a kinsfolk, make it feel a little more like home, hmm?" Nicias nodded and followed the woman around the corner and adjusted the pack on his back.

Reina had made a bit of a home for herself in Tale while studying under her mentor. The young mage had arrived almost in tatters, her heart full of conflicting emotions as she left Oba with so many unresolved things, but eventually she had regained some of her confidence and learning how to control her magic had truly helped her to become more like her old self. She dared to send letters home, checking in with her family and siblings, but the pile of letters to the palace still laid mostly untouched in the small room she rented in the tavern. The inn keep was fond of her and while Reina settled in for another delicious meal, the stews and hearty dishes comforting and warm in the cooler climate, she did not seem surprised when the woman checked in with her.
"Everything is good-" She started before the woman moved to the side and revealed someone else. Reina found her hands dropping to table, her mouth opening and closing in surprise as she recognized Nicias. It had been nearly a year but she could easily recognize her childhood friend despite the passing of time. Even with her hair now in loose curls that fell lightly over her shoulder instead of dreads with golden accessories, her simple purple tunic and gray cloak instead of Oban silks, Reina did not doubt that he would surely recognize her too. All she could do was simply nod as the keep chuckled at her flush, innocently unaware of the mess she had put one of her favorite patrons in, and the next thing Reina knew the woman was pushing Nicias forward. Another plate was set at her table, the stew steaming and hot, but Reina could only focus on Nicias as she waited to see his reaction while her heart twisted in knots.
This was not the type of blind date she had been expecting at all.

Nicias had politely followed the woman around the corner but it wasn't until she showed him to his seat and he heard a woman speaking did his body freeze up. He knew that voice so it was no surprise when the woman stepped aside a moment later and he saw his best, and possibly only, friend sitting at this little table in far from home Tale. The woman gently pushed Nicias forward towards the seat across from Reina and set a bowl of food in front of him. But his stomach clenched and he didn't even glance at the food in front of him that he had been so hungry for mere moments ago. "Reina...." Nicias' voice was soft but also somewhat flat. He had too many emotions inside so he did what he always did at home when he was forced to socialize: he stuffed them down. He took another look at her, realizing that she looked as if she had been doing well, and then lowered his eyes to his food. He resisted the nervous urge to rub the back of his neck and instead picked up his spoon and started in on his soup. What could he even say? It had been over a year now that she had left him--left everyone. "Your brothers are doing well." He figured family was a neutral subject and she might be interested on how her younger siblings were doing.

Well, so much for that sliver of hope where Nicias wouldn't recognize her. Reina swallowed against the rising emotions as she studied her childhood friend who was still so very dear to her. She should have been delighted to see him and in the past she would have made some joke or even jumped up to happily hug him. All she could hear though in the back of her mind was the warnings of those noble girls who had gotten her caught up into a bit of a mess, the very incident that confirmed that she did have magic and also gave them reason to shove her away. Honestly it was strange to imagine them in this moment with her gently curled hair, her dress being a far cry from the image she had years ago when she always imagined herself growing into a warrior to stand next to the young Oban prince. Still, there was something that honestly fell into place when she accepted her magic and now that she had received training Reina felt more calm and confident with her abilities. The only thing making her heart flutter now was the fear that Nicias would yell at her or turn his back, the very fear making her body tense and destroying her appetite. The flat tone of his voice hurt just as much, especially when she recognized it from years of watching him. He had a lot to express but had simply pushed it down which made her worry that he simply did not care anymore or at least was trying not to. Not like she could blame him, all things considered.
So much for the owner's attempt at a lovely blind date. Reina suppressed a sigh before nodding as Nicias spoke of her brothers. Surprise flickered across her features before she reasoned that it was a sensible topic and one that would hopefully avoid digging into any more delicate issues for the time being. "That's great to hear." She managed not even daring to admit that she had correspondence from home to let her know that. As much as she missed her family Reina had decided to commit to this path and could only hope that one day soon she could return home. It was just the reunion she had imagined was not in a tavern while she was training as a mage.
"I suppose your sister and the rest of your family is doing well. Oba seems to be thriving from the news I receive from merchants. And....you?" She managed, her crimson gaze studying Nicias as she curled her fingers around a mug of cider as if seeking warmth from the steaming cup for comfort.

Nicias wasn't quite sure if he could handle the emotions threatening his carefully placed mask. He did his best to not feel the hurt and betrayal he had felt all that time ago when he had read the note she left for him. The note that almost derailed his plans. The note that almost broke his heart. The young man couldn't quite refrain from scratching the back of his neck nervously. "Hana is doing well...soaking up the limelight I try to stay out of." Nic wasn't sure how to answer the question about himself. How could he answer that? Ever since she left he wasn't really sure how he was at any point in time. He didn't want to ignore the question though, he wasn't sure he could ever ignore her. So instead he took a spoonful of the stew that was in front of him and tried to collect his thoughts. All in all...what could he be except honest? Taking a deep calming breath he looked up and tried to catch her gaze. "I've been living, just sort of...surviving. I wake up, train, do a few tasks my parents set for me, classes, eat, then sleep. Every day. Before I decided to travel to Zena. Even now, my days are similar. Traveling, training, finding dinner, and sleep." He looked away then, his mask of indifference starting to crack at his admission. Nicias sighed deeply, a sadness in his eyes yet he looked her over. "I'd ask how you're doing but it seems like you're doing well."

"I see." What else could she say? It did sound like something that Hana would do while Nicias preferred his studies and to do his work for others without wanting all of the praise. Still, it was fairly obvious that he had a lot on his mind at the very sight of her just as she had a lot of tangled emotions and thoughts at his sudden appearance. Reina was just thankful that Nicias was actually sitting down with her and so far hadn't seemed to chastise her for any of her actions. If anything he seemed...hurt and that truly made her chest ache.
"Surviving...is a good word." She managed as she mirrored his actions and picked up a spoon, the utensil simply stirring around the stew since most of her earlier appetite was indeed gone. At least it gave her something to do instead of fidgeting in her seat or the like. Her crimson gaze focused on the object before finally glancing back over towards Nicias. "I've just been dedicated on my studies, but I've made significant progress." Enough that her mentor was confident that Reina would be fine, but something kept making her hesitate. Was she afraid of causing more trouble if she returned? Apparently her departure had caused some trouble though...guilt made her stomach churn, but at the same time she knew it was for the best. Staying could have caused more issues, but Reina did not know how to express that to Nicias. "Still, you look well. How is traveling? It's definitely different from Oba, right?" She attempted, her gaze curious as she finally tried to keep her attention on him even though it was hard not to go back to studying her stew.

"Mhmm..." Was all he said for a few long moments as his gaze dropped to his food and seemed to collect his thoughts. "You were always a good student when you put your mind to it, if you could sit still, at least." A slight tease was in his soft voice as he remembered their childhood. How things used to be. The thought caused his gaze to remain on his food, not sure if he could look at her and not feel the same things he had when she had left. Mustering up his courage, he set his spoon down and met her gaze. "Traveling is different, yes. If I had my way I'd be traveling alone though we both know that wouldn't happen. My parents insisted I bring a small group of guards, they're likely upstairs. The small silver lining was I got to choose who to bring with me so at least I know they're all competent and at least somewhat trustworthy." He paused as he studied her for a few moments. She seemed to have changed so much in the time they were apart. She'd grown up, he realized, while he felt like he was just the same person he had been. "Your hair is so different, but it looks good on you." He complimented. Out of the dreads it looked a little more like her mothers with a different color of course.

"Glad someone thinks so at least." Reina teased quietly as she fiddled with a fork, her fingers twisting the cool metal back and forth. She did have a bad habit of being jittery especially when she was younger. Of course Nicias would notice that. The thought made her stomach twist again, her gaze burning as he met her own.
"That sounds about right." A wry smile crossed her lips as she listened to him. "I'm glad that they're allowing you to travel. I truly hope you see a lot of amazing things before returning to Oba." Despite everything Reina was happy that she had been able to experience so much. If her departure hadn't been so abrupt then perhaps the fresh air would have been so much sweeter, but as it was there was a bit of a weight lifted from her shoulders now that she wasn't at the palace. However, missing a certain someone had somehow balanced that out and she realized that even the fresh air wasn't the same as the playful days of her childhood when she had her best friend at her side.
A slight flush decorated her cheeks at the sudden compliment and the mage nodded. "I thought...a change might be nice." She managed sheepishly, her gaze darting away as if that would somehow hide her blush. "So thank you." Reina poked at her stew before realizing she was still holding the fork and quickly swapped to the spoon, her cheeks darkening a bit more in her flustered state. "I uh...shouldn't be here for much longer. My mentor thinks I've learned quickly and while I'm not expert I can handle things...now." She finally managed. It was almost as if she was hoping he would ask her but at the same time Reina didn't even know how to answer things. Was she even prepared to face everything back in Oba? She couldn't even handle a compliment from Nic! Did she simply eat and then say goodbye again or...well even Reina wasn't certain what to expect now that she had encountered Nicias again. Just looking at him made her feel a mix of confusing emotions. What was wrong with her?

He had to stop and think about her words as he continued to eat through his stew. Nic was glad that she was doing well and learning here though he couldn't help but wonder if she couldn't have done the same while being home. He could maybe understand...Nicias could understand the stress she likely felt especially being close him and his family. Before long, he realized his bowl was empty so he lowered his spoon and set it to the side. His heart clenched as he watched her be a little flustered, how much he had missed her companionship. "Do...will..." He wasn't sure how to phrase his question. "Do you think you'll be going home, next? Or will you also take the time to travel the world?" He tried to hide the hopeful look on his face but it still showed in his eyes. Hopefully he could hide how much her answer would mean to him.

And there was one of the many questions she had wondered about. Reina found herself pausing, her spoon lowering next to her half eaten stew, and it took a moment before she could find her words. "I don't know..." She started before closing her mouth again, her lips pressing tightly as she thought about it. If she was going to be completely honest then....Reina's gaze studied Nicias thoughtfully as she pondered her next words. She never meant to run away from him and it wasn't fair to lie, right? Even if it did step on some toes? Very nasty toes that well....regardless that was the past. She had been here for so many months that hopefully things had calmed back down since her last outburst.
"Honestly? I do miss home." Reina finally managed as she crossed her arms nervously across her stomach, a rare expression from the usually confident girl. "But I missed you more, Nicias." The confession had her cheeks darkening again as her gaze lowered towards the table. "I had always imagined some epic reunion but I wasn't certain how to even come home once my training was completed. Being a mage was not something I had ever thought possible and the sudden explosion of magic scared me. I never wanted to run away, but I needed time." A small sheepish smile crossed her lips, a chuckle forming there. "If I had seen you before leaving then I don't think I would have been able to leave Oba even if I did accidentally cause some fires here and there."
Reina slowly peeked up towards Nicias, almost as if she were nervous to see his expression. "So I guess what I'm saying is now that I'm more in control....I would travel with you if that's what you asked." Her fingers tightened around her sides as she committed to her answer. They had already run into each other here out of all places so what was the point in running away again? She had missed her dear friend and honestly life hadn't been the same even if she was experiencing a new world and learning magic which would have sounded so much more exciting to a younger Reina. "I totally understand if not! I don't want to impose, I'm just sayin' that I wouldn't say no if you wanted me to tag along." She quickly added, her voice softening as she caught sight of that hopeful expression.

He felt that shield around his heart begin to thaw at her words. She had missed him? And that was the reason she hadn't said goodbye to him face to face? The pain he felt at her departure lessened with that knowledge, the knowledge that she hadn't left to leave him. A soft laugh, almost one of disbelief, left him as he nervously scratched the back of his head. Reina had missed home; had missed him. He exhaled the breath he hadn't been aware he was holding. "Everyone misses you, Reina. Your parents and siblings. Heck, even my parents and Hana miss you and want you to be home safe and sound." Nic smiled gently at her before realizing what reading between the lines of what he said seemed to imply. "Not that anybody was doubting your abilities before you left." He said quickly. "I--"] Nicias paused as he tried to phrase his feelings. "I wouldn't want to ask you to go home with me because, I wouldn't be going home immediately, I still have a task to complete. But you know, it would never be you tagging along for anything. I would've thought you of all people, Reina, would know things aren't that simple." Nicias took a deep breath and exhaled quickly and began his own confession before he lost the nerve. "I wouldn't want to take you home immediately because I'm not sure I would want to share you with your family. I've missed you, Rei, more than just your company. You're my best friend...no, more than that even. This time away has shown me that." Once again he laughed softly as if he couldn't imagine he was spilling his guts like this.. "It's always been me and you, even when we were young and your sister was around. Even more so as we grew older. You weren't just my best friend, my partner in crime, my confidant. I realized that in our time apart." He looked to her, his heart laid on a platter before her.

Oh, no. Reina's gaze burned at the soft laugh. Was he laughing at her reasons? Confusion made her brow knot until she realized he seemed more relieved as she was and just like that the tension left her shoulders. She opened and closed her mouth at his confirmations, her head shaking slightly in sorrow though there was a small smile on her lips. It wasn't as if she doubted her family or the support from her friends. It was nice to hear though, especially from Nicias."I know." She commented quietly before his next statement had her blinking in surprise. A fluttering feeling twisted upwards in her chest and she found it hard to look directly at him, her heart was too busy doing a weird dance for her to focus on him directly as his words slowly registered.
"In that case....then I guess that I should be going with you. Things seem to be lining up that way for us both it seems." She finally replied, her cheeks warming more as she pondered everything. He missed her and felt so strongly about her. Of course she knew on some level that the two of them had a deep bond but Reina had always been afraid to touch the subject. He was a prince after all and she was....well she was a bit of a mess, wasn't she? The young mage swallowed quietly against the wave of rising emotions. Even now she didn't know if she could put her feelings into the exact words that she needed. Hopefully though there was plenty of time for that since they would be traveling together again. Together again just like ole times...if not slightly different. "It's a good thing that you don't plan on going home right away. We could use some time to get reacquainted with everything that has happened during our time apart." She managed with a small smile towards Nicias, almost as if she were truly shy for once around her childhood friend.

Nicias 7 Nicias felt his own shoulders lose their tension as everything seemed to fall into place. Reina would be coming home. Not only coming home but traveling with him for a little bit before they ventured back home, just like they used to talk about doing when they were younger. "My guards and I heard of some interesting treasure hunt or something of that sorts in this area. We had planned to check it out, would you want to do that before we leave town? Of course you'll need some time to get things situated here before you leave so just let me know when you've got your affairs in order." The smile on his face was genuine and he couldn't even begin to be thankful for whatever god allowed their chance meeting here today.

Reina nodded. "Sure, that sounds interesting." A devious part of her was tempted to try to get Nicias to give the guards the slip, but the mature part of Reina understood that it was best to not cause trouble. It was one thing if she left without anyone, but another thing for the crown prince to disappear. Even a note wouldn't suffice and then they'd both be in some serious trouble! At least now though they could travel together for a bit and explore the world before returning to Oba, Reina's gaze softened at the thought. It would be nice to just enjoy spending time together, even with guards, because they would be catching up away from the watchful gazes of those in the capital. "I'll get everything sorted by tomorrow morning and I'll meet you here by early afternoon. We can go treasure hunting then."
