1 - 5: Better Than Nothing A common gemstone...maybe it fell off a passing traveler. You could probably put it to use.
Valerian stared at the strange wooden thing in his hands. His father had brought one for both him and his sister from town, the strange thing apparently a good tool for gathering treasure from the nearby stream that cut through the forest. While he was doubtful about how such a creation could magically make gold and the like appear the youngling was still interested in trying. If anything at least it gave him something that hopefully wouldn't be too destructive to do with his sister. It could be a fun afternoon, right?
Valerian smiled at the thought before glancing about for Eujanie. "Are you ready to try this out?" His voice was soft as usual but his gaze seemed bright as he held up the contraption, ready to try and see whatever treasures could be found. Worst case he would find at least a couple of cool plants or fish maybe to inspect since he loved to investigate all of the wildlife flourishing around them here in the forest. Or if they were actually lucky maybe they could come home with treasure to share with their family. Now that would be nice!
2 - 10: Something Shiny That looks promising... Use the second roll to calculate your results.
16 - 20: What Luck! Wow - this is a rare gemstone not seen around these parts. While not big, it's still something you could add to a necklace or ring.

Eujanie was excited, but also skeptical of the weird device. It looked weirdly like the thing their mama used, sometimes, to really wash stuff - and a part of her thought maybe the adults were tricking them into helping them, somehow. ... But they'd been sent out to the stream to 'play', and even Valerian seemed excited about it!
"Yep! So - what do we DO with it?" She asked, turning to her brother as she held the device aloft, turning it this way and that to inspect it.

"Your favorite thing - grabbing dirt." Teased Valerian as he watched his sibling. "We're supposed to stick it in the river and grab any loose dirt and stuff from the bottom." He rolled his leggings up before moving forward to wade in the cool waters. Making certain his sibling was watching him, Valerian held up the sifter almost like a trophy before sticking it in the water and digging around with it. His mouth pursed in concentration as he tried to wedge it beneath some of the sandy material and eventually he tugged the sifter up. "I think...we just shake it about and see what rocks and things are left behind?" That was what the lady had said at least, right?

"Oh, ha ha." Eujanie returned flatly, rolling her eyes as she waded in after him. They weren't here to fish, so she didn't bother keeping her movements smooth - they kerplunked in the water noisily, sending splashes around her. She watched her brother, expression pinched in doubt, though she mimicked her motions, groaning when she lifted the heavy basket. "Eww. Who'd even wanna do this?" She complained, shaking it as her brother had demonstrated.
What was left was a handful of sticks, glorpy rotted river vegetation, and bigger rocks that got caught in the holes.
"I think I did it wrong. I didn't get anything." She whined, showing her brother the empty basket.

"Probably because you chased all the rocks away." Valerian replied with a small smile towards his sister. Even though he knew that wasn't the case the youngling was a bit more superstitious than most thanks to the elders in the nearby village who always shared their stories with him whenever he was shopping with his parents. Living in the forest also got him thinking about the strange things in nature, the way the forest seemed to have a life of its own making him respect everything around him.
"It takes a few attempts, I think." He admitted with a small frown as he also shook his basket around and didn't see anything. "We can keep wading further down?" Valerian suggested, glancing around to check on the currents. It didn't seem too terribly bad if they went a little bit further down. The water was just moving across some rocks that he saw jutting around the middle, the effect almost like a small waterfall that he could wash his hands in. Maybe they could try that side?

To that, Eujanie stuck out her tongue and playfully wrinkled her nose. Combative though she could be, it was rare for her to actually get mad at her brother - there weren't other kids, close by, to play with unless they went into town, and she'd long since learned that he was her only play companion - she'd best not squander his graces.
Still, she wasn't nearly as patient as he was, and could already feel herself growing bored with the distraction. Swimming in the river, or trying to catch the smaller minnows with her new 'sieve' sounded better -
But. Valerian was still interested, so she forced herself to play along. For now. "I bet the fish know where the good stuff is." Eujanie agreed, secretively, nodding along with his suggestion. Further down meant the water was a little deeper, but not so deep their mama would have a heart attack if she saw them playing here. She began wading that way, stopping to skim the bottom again. This resulted in a few pretty, smooth rocks, but nothing too marvelous.

"Maybe we can ask them." Replied Valerian with a small smile, his gaze skimming over the crystal clear waters to look for anything swimming around them. So far it was mostly smaller fish that scattered whenever he got too close and while he nearly slipped beneath the surface the boy found no scaly friends to commune with when he finally got to the rocks. "Wish me luck." He called out to his sister before squatting, not caring that most of his clothing was soaking wet by now as he wiggled the sifter beneath the water.
Once he knew he got a good bit of dirt, Valerian pulled it up and stared at the pile of river silt. Hmm? It actually looked like something shiny was in there! His gaze widened as he gave the basket a few shakes and reached forward to pull out a small purple crystal. It looked like something he had seen in a store before, but even if it was common the stone was still a good find for the youngling. "It looks like there are gemstones here, Eujanie! Look!" Maybe she could find something around this area too!

"Good luck!" She chirped back, sticking her tongue out of the corner of her mouth as she worked. She'd just dumped another handful of river plants out of her sieve but Valerian called out. Jumping up, Eujanie waded closer, eyes shooting wide when he showed her the stone. It was so pretty! "Ah!! You really found a gemstone!" She cried, shaking him a bit, although she stopped when it occurred to her that she might make him drop his prize.
Encouraged, she sank down, just as he had, and scooped a huge mound of river silt - carefully sifting through it, just as he had, eyes huge and expectant.
On her first try... nothing. Eujanie pouted, but hunkered down to try again, spitting out a bit of water when her face sank a bit too deep into it. "Did they sweep away already? Aww...! Maybe-- you gotta wish me luck too?"

"I did! Eu-Eujanie!" Valerian gasped his sister's name when she shook him, the boy doing his best to keep the jumping gemstone from actually falling back into the water. Thankfully she stopped just in time and he made certain to pocket it. Maybe he could ask his parents to help him tie it into a bracelet or something? That could be nice.
"If you'd like! Maybe you should ask super nicely though." Valerian teased as he crouched next to his sister, his hands reaching out so that the cool water swirled around them. "I can give you a good watery blessing for luck if you really want." There was a bit of mischievousness in his gaze, but his words were sincere since he did want his sister to come home with something shiny too.

Ugh! Brothers! Eujanie waited, expectantly, for him to pass his luck off to her, now that he'd found his own trinket - but he instead played coy with her. She huffed and splashed a bit of water at him, which was better than the strong urge she had to pinch him. If she did THAT though, he'd never give her any luck! "I'll show YOU watery--" She threatened back, though a giggle broke through her facade of seriousness.
"Pleaaaase! Little brother, I need your good luck!! Share some with me!"

"I don't know if I have any luck now." Valerian joked as he shook his head, the leftover droplets of water from his sister's antics flying into the air. "Buuut since you asked so nicely..." Valerian bent down and scooped up a handful of water and waded towards Eujanie. Acting like some benevolent saint the boy poured it on her head, a teasing smile crossing his lips for a split second before he quickly showed a somber expression for when the deed was done.
"There you have my luck. You should try that area, right there." It was a blind direction but he did have a good feeling about that little spot a couple of feet away from them. If his sister didn't murder him for his own playful antics then hopefully she would actually find something there.

Eujanie whined and stamped her foot, with a splash, glaring at her brother as he continued teasing her. But, finally... he ducked down to scoop up water, and her expression turned excited. She ducked her head and accepted the trickle with a stifled giggle - then straightened up again, determined. She nodded, and pretended to roll up her sleeves as she waded to the area he'd pointed out. She hunkered down, grunting as she scooped up a huge amount of silt - sifting.
It took a while, but... eventually, her eyes caught a glint, and with a gasp she reached down, forcing her fingers through the remaining mud and silt to pick up - a gem.
It was big enough to fit into a ring, or in a necklace - but rough, uncut, with dirtier chunks of rock on the sides. But the rest was a deep green.
"It worked!! Spirits, it worked-- Valerian, look!" She shoved the basket under her arm, and instead scrambled towards him, showing him the rock, staring at him in awe. ...Was her little brother MAGICAL?

As amusing as the water blessing had been Valerian truly wasn't certain it actually do something. His excitement and surprise at seeing his sister find a rare gemstone like that was completely sincere and he found himself clapping. "Nice! That's awesome, Eujanie!" He grinned as he splashed closer so that he could take a glance over the stone. It was definitely unique and seemed a lot more rare than the little one he had found. Still, Valerian was just delighted his sister had found something like that.
"Maybe the spirits did bless you!" He commented happily before glancing around as if maybe to catch something slipping back beneath the waters. Had it truly just been a coincidence? He definitely didn't think he was magical like that! "If that's their gift then I think we've found what we came here for." Valerian mused as he reflected upon their luck. "Should we head back home now?" They were pretty damp and some clean clothing and warm food sounded nice the more he thought about it.

Most children would be jealous, if someone less invested got a bigger prize. But Valerian was a good kid, and he was just as happy for her as if he'd found it himself. Of course, Eujanie was also a kid and couldn't understand that distinction in this moment, but the fact remained.
She stared at her gemstone, as if bewitched, but then shook herself and carefully tucked it away, just like Val had with his. "Yeah - I'm gonna show mama the gems we found! C'mon, Val!" She splashed at him, using her sieve as a weapon, then scurried to the edge of the river, soaking wet like a rat but happy that the rumors had actually been true!
