A new craze is sweeping across Tendaji and everyone from the rich to the nomads are finding themselves swept into the excitement. Even you have heard about this new trend of going out into the world and hunting for treasure.
For the seasoned treasure hunters, it's a bit laughable to think it's just that easy to go and get rich, but they can appreciate the enjoyment many are getting from wading into the rivers and streams, sifting through stone, and occasionally pulling up a precious treasure to call their own.
But how easy is it, really? And are you lucky enough to strike gold?

She had heard of the fun people were having with the new craze and thought it would be the perfect activity to do with her grandchildren. She adored each of them to no end and spoiled them endlessly with gifts and food so getting to actually do something beyond a simple visit had her excited.
It was what landed her standing in a stream up to her knees while she motioned for Ari to join her. "Come come, lets see if we have any luck." The joy in her tone clearly evident. "I'm sure whatever we find your father and your uncle can turn it into something." Being that both Rydan and Dovian were blacksmiths she wasn't wrong.

Arkadios wasn't much on trends, but he had to admit that the potential to gain a little gold from all of this was tempting. He earned a little here and there from doing odd jobs when he could, but it never really went far. Until he was old enough for proper work he'd have to settle, but this might help him out. Of course, it came with the bonus of spending time with his grandmother and that was always nice.
He'd already rolled up his loose pants to his knees and was trudging his way through the river to join her. "Or we could sell it," he pointed out. "Unless you wanted them to make something. I'd just as soon take the gold and pay for us all to go out for a crab boil."

She looked at him. "Well, I guess we could sell it if you wanted." At the mention of her wanting something to be made she shook her head. "Nah, I don't wear much jewelry. Your grandfather knows this and spoils me with cooking spices instead." She chuckled.
"We can still go out for a crab boil even if we don't get anything." She felt she should point that out to him. Phaedra loved to spoil each of her grandkids so if Ari wanted something she wasn't against getting/doing it.

"I mean...we definitely should." Arkadios would never turn down a good meal. A nice crustacean boil with some vegetables and the right sides...Gods, his mouth was watering already. Crouching down in the water, the hybrid started to sift through the silt. It wasn't often that he played around in water, Ari just wasn't the type, and the muck swamped his toes made the hair on the back of his neck stand on end.
"...I think if I find anything I'm going to give it to mom." He didn't like saying his parents names outloud in public for obvious reasons, but it was painfully obvious he wasn't talking about Thea. "Or maybe dad could make something for her. If I sold it I was just give the gold to Sio anyway."

"Crab boil it is then." Alright, so she had a soft spot for her grandkids, sue her. Phaedra couldn't help it. Generally if they asked for something she would get it for them. Within reason. Usually.
As Ari told her that he was going to give whatever he found to his mother she smiled at him softly. She was very aware of their situation so it wasn't a surprise and over the years she had gotten used to the tone and terms when Ari and Sio spoke about their mom. "Hm, I think she would love that."
The mention of giving the money to his sister made her chuckle a little. "What would your sister do with the money that you wouldn't?"

Arkadios shrugged his shoulders as he squatted down in the water. It was clear here; clear enough that he didn't have to search too hard to find a good spot to sift through. "I dunno, pretty things? A new top, a snack, material so someone can make her a dagger... Whatever she wants." What did he need that he didn't already have? It just made sense to give it to Siofra, especially given what she'd been going through recently...

She nodded along with him as she moved her eyes to look down at the water. "And you don't have a use for any of those things? Cool things, new clothes, material to make something?" While she loved that he wanted to give it to his twin she wanted to make sure he wasn't neglecting himself.
Phaedra found a place of her own to hunt for treasure in. "An odd, personal question? Sure. What's on your mind sweetheart?" She'd be lying if she said she wasn't at least a little curious.

Arkadios scrunched his eyebrows. "I guess...maybe? No?... I don't know." The teen lifted his pan to the surface of the water, gave it a little shake, and when nothing came to life dipped it back down once more.
"What's it like being from Tale, but not living in Tale? Is it hard sticking out?" The way he phrased it was cautious; almost as if he were worried about saying it in a way that could hurt her. "If someone's just looking at me from behind or even the side they wouldn't know I was mixed. Drop my dreads, cover my eyes...No one would know, but I know it's not the same for everyone and I just...How do you cope with that?"

She gave a small hum as she tried to sift some of the mud into her pan without making the water all murky. As she brought it up she looked toward her grandson with a soft expression. "Is it hard being different?" She clarified for him. Phaedra could understand the question being asked.
"Sweetheart, I'm not a hybrid. Even though I stand out for being from a different tribe it is wholly different from being of mixed blood." Her voice stayed soft as she spoke to him, but her pan and its goodies were forgotten at the moment. "Let me tell you this though. I love your grandfather and my children were a result of that love. Just like you are a result of your mother's love for your father. Your differences as a hybrid showcase the love that was found between two people. Never discredit that by trying to hide it. If someone makes you feel like you should hide it then let me deal with them. I'm old and I can stand a few days in a cell." She winked at him with the last statement she made. Phaedra might be a grandmother but she was still very protective of her family.

Ari's cheeks darkened a little and he nodded. "...Yeah, that." While he'd danced around the subject she got straight to the meat of it which was honestly such a huge relief. If he talked to his mother about it she might suspect things, same with his father or anyone else really, but his grandmother...Maybe she could be a little more subtle.
Or so he thought.
The more she talked the more Ari became aware of exactly who he was dealing with and honestly? The thought made him grin a little. "...My ears are pointed because my mother's are, and my eyes are green because of my father...because of you. I don't stand out as much as my cousins or Siofra, but that doesn't make it any easier sometimes." Lifting his pan a little, Ari half-heartedly gave it a little shake. He thought of his sister, of the torment she'd had to endure because other's thought Thea had been cheating just because she took more after their mother...If she'd looked like Ari then she could have avoided all of that. But would that have been better?
He thought she was perfect just the way she was. Like a flame that burned in the night.
"Just feels like I'm whining if I say anything compared to some of the things they've heard."

"True. Though if you ask me, all of my children and grandchildren are perfect the way they are." Phaedra had been over the moon when Lynx and Iexa had been born, identical or not, silver hair or not. "Siofra and Zashaduri have the same green eyes. I will gladly take the blame for them." She grinned at him.
She dropped her attention down to the pan in her hands and shifted it a little, getting water back in it so the dirt and mud moved more easily. "You can't compare someone else's experiences to your own, Ari. Everyone reacts differently to the same situation. When Dovian was still a teen he got pulled in with the wrong people, they hurt my baby. Your grandfather was more level headed than I was. I used violence as a response but your grandfather used words." As she spoke she kept sifting with her pan and she noticed something glittering. "What you feel is no less valid than what someone else feels." She picked up the little bit of glittering gold that she'd managed to find and smiled at it.
"And I am sure that the words the others have heard hurt you just as much, even if they weren't directed at you." She finally looked back at him before handing him the little gold nugget she'd found.

Ari fought hard not to remind his grandmother that Dovian was still involved with a rough crowd. She was aware of the situation and no doubt had her own opinions on things, even if she didn't let the younger members of the family in on them. "It's really hard not to punch people some days. A good solid hit to the teeth and then I wouldn't need words." With a good, solid sigh the teenager let go of as much frustration as he could for the moment and turned to see his grandmother offering up something shiny.
A bit of gold, just as bright as his crystals but all the more precious. He gave her a loving smiled and tucked it away in a little pouch on his hip. "I'm tired of fighting though, so I'm going to try to use my words more. All fighting does is make things harder on your family and I think we've had enough of that for a while."
When he lifted his pan a final time Ari saw something shiny in his own dish and with a little rubbing with his fingers he found another gold nugget.

"It is hard to not punch people." Phae often times came across times when she had to remind herself to not put her fist to someone's eye. Then again, she didn't need to worry her poor husband more. Her being in a jail cell would cause him to get grey hair.
"Using your words sounds like a good idea." She praised him. Even if the boy had said he was going to go around punching people in the teeth she would have praised him.
"Just remember, your family loves and accepts you for who you are and how you look no matter what." And she didn't just mean him either, she meant everyone in the family. So he could relay the words to his siblings as well.
