Jet knew he shouldn't be nervous when it came to Axinite. He'd already told Axinite more things about himself than he did anyone else. Other than Aquamarine, of course. Axinite knew about his brother, knew why he joined the Negaverse, why it was important to him. So this should be easy to explain himself, right?

What started out as a polite knock on the door and equally polite greeting and request to talk, it ended up being several minutes of silence while Axinite made him and Jet some tea. Which was fine. It gave Jet a few minutes to breathe and work over in his head what he wanted to say to Axinite. Other than apologize to him. But he had to say more than that, right?

"You're important to me. I didn't want you to get involved because I know you would have blamed yourself if something went wrong," he said once the tea was set in front of him and Axinite had returned to sitting in his chair.

Had he told Axinite he was important to him before…? He couldn't remember. It wasn't as though Axinite needed to check in on Jet as he had to check in on others like Faustite and Kamacite who wore their trauma on their sleeves in different ways. Jet kept his own to himself and had learned a long time ago how to lock all of that away, otherwise it would have just consumed him from the inside out.

"I'm sorry if I hurt you by keeping you in the dark. I did what I thought was best for everyone."

Axinite wondered if Jet had been waiting for there to be something between them before he started speaking, and he supposed the two cups counted for something. He looked up from his cup. His hands were still gently wrapped around it but he’d made no effort to draw it to his lips.

For a few seconds, Axinite was quiet; he tapped one finger against the ceramic.

“I understand.”

It was all he said for a moment; he kept tapping on the cup.

On the outside, he was almost completely unreadable. His face wasn’t quite relaxed, but he seemed focused. There were no discernible clues, nothing to give away what he thought or felt.

It seemed like that was all he was going to say, but he had the awareness to know that this would be a short, awkward conversation if he lapsed into silence again.

Jet was a General King now. There was no power imbalance between the two. Axinite had more experience, but that was all.

Laurelite had known about the mission, in all its secrecy. She had trusted Jet. Greatly, obviously.

He wasn’t upset about the promotion. Jet had earned it. He was capable of running missions, of leading teams, of capturing Princesses.

“You didn’t want a liability. It’s practical.”

Jet heard the words from Axinite, but he didn’t really believe that Axinite understood. And when he spoke again, it was clear that he didn’t.

Unlike Axinite, Jet wasn’t good with hiding his emotions or his thoughts. And because of that, he thought there was no point in trying to deceive. Unless he was dealing with the White Moon (because for some reason they just ate up sad puppy eyes and a sob story), he tried being as honest and straightforward as possible.

“You think of yourself as a liability, sir?” he asked, confused and surprised… and concerned… that Axinite would have such a low self image. He was the head of Intelligence. Surely he knew what others thought of him.

“In this instance, was I not?” Axinite questioned. “You thought you did what was best for everyone. If I didn’t know, I couldn’t intervene. I assume you felt I couldn’t be counted on not to deviate from the plan you’d structured. You must have had all the information you needed, so there was nothing more I could offer you. I know I’m not at my best on the field. So, I understand. And, your mission was a success. You knew what you were doing.”

He shrugged, not quite dismissively, but maybe there wasn’t much more to say about it.

“So, your choice was practical. You accomplished your mission goals and brought everyone back alive. And, you captured a Princess. Queen Laurelite is obviously pleased with how things went down. So you owe me no apology. I should be congratulating you.”

Jet continued to frown, unsure of what to think about everything Axinite said. So instead, he turned his focus to trying to sit more comfortably with the brace around his chest. Sitting kept the weight off his leg, at least. His face still ached from the gash Ganymede left across it.

I should be congratulating you, Axinite had said.

“But you’re not…”

He was trying not to deflate. He was a General King, although he still had to get used to it. But what he wasn’t used to was the disappointment from Axinite, whether he was showing it openly or not.

Jet knew he should be happy. He had been successful with his mission, but he also knew what he was risking when he’d asked Queen Laurelite to keep General King Axinite in the dark on the mission.

“I don’t think of you as a liability. I think of you as a brother that I want to make proud and don’t want to get hurt,” he admitted quietly as he stared at the cup of tea in front of him.

Axinite had trained him and others well. They knew how to obtain the intelligence they needed for the mission, and in this particular mission everything was happening so quickly that there wasn’t much they could do to prepare anyway.

“If you knew, you would have been just like Aqua. Maybe worse. Not sleeping or eating. So many people need you, and I didn’t want your focus to be on just what I was getting into. I’m sorry,” he said again, because even if Axinite said he wasn’t owed an apology, Jet still knew he’d let him down.

Silence blanketed Axinite’s office for a moment, and then his soft sigh broke it. “I’m conflicted,” he finally said. “But not because I’m not proud of you. You performed admirably, and you accomplished an amazing thing. Of course I would have worried if I’d known what you were up to. I worried while you were gone, too. It’s not that I don’t understand.”

He kept his hands on his desk but he seemed to have relaxed into his chair a bit.

“I hope you don’t think I didn’t notice your presence in my office. My empty inbox would have been indication enough that something was going on.”

Another sigh, like he had to work to breathe the emotions out of himself. His expression softened a bit, though; his eyes didn’t leave Jet’s face.

“Congratulations are very much in order, General King Jet. I’ve thought very highly of you for a long time now. Your promotion was well-deserved. I’m sorry that my emotions have been distracting me from that. I won’t lie and pretend like I haven’t had hurt feelings. On a practical level, I know what you did was the right thing. On a personal level, I don’t ever want you to do anything like that again. If something had gone wrong,” he drew in another breath and the thought seemed to make him uncomfortable again.

“I would never have forgiven myself. Whether you’d told me or not. So the next time you want to do something reckless, tell me. If you won’t let me talk you out of it, at least let me have your back for it.”

“You can’t protect everyone, you know,” Jet said after a moment, his voice still quiet and a bit remorseful. He felt guilty for leaving Axinite out, but he didn’t regret his decision.

“We’re allowed to want to protect you, too.”

Those who knew Axinite knew of his past to an extent. They knew he lost his team, that he wasn’t really battle ready and preferred to stay behind the desk in his office and research information instead. The fact that he did care so much about others meant that if they lost him, so many would suffer.

“But… if I do end up wanting to do something reckless again, I’ll talk to you about it. With the condition that if I haven’t made up my mind, you can put as much emotion into talking to me as you want. But if I do have my mind made up, I want you to leave your emotions out of it. Please. I need your experience and guidance. I know you worry. I know you care, but if I already have my mind made up, I do want you to have my back without trying to talk me out of it. With everything that happened recently, I didn’t think you would be able to keep your emotions out of it.”

For a moment, Axinite was quiet. There was something in him, a steely reserve, that he might have intended to argue with. For a fraction of a second, maybe he could have held himself how he used to be, if only to prove that he wasn’t weak, but–

Jet wasn’t asking that. He didn’t need to prove himself to him.

Axinite relented, and then he nodded.

“You’re not wrong. And I’m not happy about that, but. I am very emotionally charged these days, I know. It is a weakness. But. It isn’t all bad. I can’t help that I care so much. And I’d like to think that my caring has helped someone when they needed it.”

He exhaled and leaned back in his seat. “I’ll do my best. But I won’t promise to always keep my emotions out of it. And you might be a General King but I have seniority over you. And if I want to fuss, I will, and I expect you to let me. I respect you, though. I won’t give you too hard of a time. I would be very upset to lose you, Jet. My concern doesn’t reflect my confidence in you. If you’ve made your mind up, I will support you to the best of my abilities and I will do everything in my power to see that you succeed. Just keep an open mind for me. I was pretty good at planning missions and calculating risks even before I was a General King. That hasn’t left me. Even if I am more cautious, now.”

Jet pressed his lips together in what was supposed to be a serious expression, but with his still youthful face it really just looked like a pout more than anything else. At least he kept his arms by his side instead of crossing them petulantly over his chest like he wanted to.

But at least Axinite was agreeing to let him do what he needed to do. Sort of. He was agreeing with conditions and reminders that he’d been a General King longer. Well, yes, but it wasn’t as though there were many other General Sovereigns around, either.

At least Aquamarine let him do what he wanted. Sort of. Although he promised not to do anything so dangerous again.

“Okay,” he finally relented with a sigh. “Fuss all you want, but I’ll show you that I can hold my own. I respect you too. A lot. Even if my actions might not have made it seem that way. I respect you… but I care about you too. If I had another brother…”

Jet paused and shrugged again, because it was always difficult to talk about his brother, but he was getting better at it. He’d talked to Axinite about him before, after all.

“I just imagine my brother would have fussed like you do, so… maybe it was selfish of me to not want you involved. If it was the only way I could protect you. I don’t know, it sounds stupid when I say it out loud,” he frowned again, but made a point to pick up the cup of tea to gulp down a few mouthfuls to shut himself up. With the responsibility Axinite had, Jet had no idea how many others considered him to be like a sibling or mentor or anything like that.

Axinite’s eyes immediately shot up, guarded and worried, and–there was an unreadable emotion, like he wasn’t exactly sure how to process what Jet had said. It wasn’t alarm, it seemed like he’d just been surprised. Whatever he’d been expecting, it wasn’t something like that.

A silence followed, brief and fleeting. Axinite didn’t think it was uncomfortable but he wasn’t willing to let it become such. “It doesn’t sound stupid,” he said, a bit more gently now.

He understood how important Jet’s brother had been. He understood how young he’d been when he lost him.

He understood a lot of things, not the least of which was how meaningful a statement like that was.

Of course, Jet could always be manipulating him–in which case, he’d have been doing a splendid job because Axinite’s defenses immediately lowered.

“I am grateful that you look out for me.”

Most people didn’t extend worry to him, he was a General King, and he had earned his status.

But Jet had, too.

“And I intend to continue doing the same. If you are so keen to protect me, at least make sure I have the information and resources to do the same, Jet. I’ll ask for that, but know that it’s only so I can make sure you’re as prepared as possible. I trust you. I don’t want to lose you.“

Especially not over something that could have been prevented.

Jet let out a heavy sigh, but nodded. Axinite was stubborn, but he knew that. It was probably why he’d lasted as long as he had, and survived everything he’d been through. Jet was stubborn too, but he liked to believe that he knew which fights to pick and which to concede.

“I trust you, too. I’m counting on you to help me, if that’s okay. I have no idea what I’m doing,” he admitted, his shoulders falling a bit for a moment, but he quickly straightened back up.

He was a General King. He couldn’t afford to not know what he was doing. He would figure it out. As quickly as possible.

“Thank you, Axinite. I hope you can count on me as well. I have no intention of going anywhere. I wouldn’t want to have anyone else worry about what Aquamarine would do without me,” he admitted with a small grimace, but it was followed by a smile.

Axinite watched him closely, taking in every little detail that there was to observe. He was calculating and attentive, but he was also comfortable around Jet. Now, at least. If he’d had anger or disappointment for how things had happened, they had already faded.

“I already count on you, Jet. I am optimistic about your future. I think Metallia has made a good choice with you. And, you’ve earned it. All of this. Anything you need, of course I’ll be here to help. You aren’t in any of this alone. I remember how difficult it was to get started. But, you know where my office is. You can contact me at any time. If I’m not here, for whatever reason, you can always send me a message.”

His brows were just slightly knit, no doubt because he always had room to worry for those important to him, but he seemed to have visibly relaxed–and even managed a smile.

“I know you’re a good fit for this position. In your heart, you know what you’re doing. But, perhaps you should spend a little extra time with me so we can go over things together. If you’d like, there’s no pressure.”

The offer from Axinite had whatever was left of the tension in his shoulders leaving almost immediately. He would very much like to go over things with Axinite, and wanted to do whatever it took to prove to him that he was only acting in what he thought was Axinite’s best interest when he decided not to tell him.

Well, and maybe a little of his own interest. He didn’t think Axinite would have sabotaged his mission with his over worrying, but if anyone was going to try and convince the Queen to revoke her permission for Jet to carry things out, well… A General King’s word was a little more weighted than that of a General.

“I would like that. Please. And thank you, Axinite,” he said as he relaxed further. He had a long way to go, but knowing that he had support (from more than just Aquamarine and the Queen) made things so much better.
