Taking the starseed had been easier than Lysithea would have expected, the other senshi didn’t even put up a fight, just looked at her with concern…like she was the one who was in trouble. What joke.

Lysithea sat on the edge of a rooftop not a block away from where the senshi lay, her body most likely dying from the lack of the soul inside of it…but that was fine. That was as it should be, right? White Moon Sesnhi who didn’t want to make the right choice had to die. And that one openly admitted to being a traitor so. This was doubly necessary.

There was another senshi within sensing distance, but Lysithea didn’t really care. It was just another bother to deal with. That was all the White Moon really was. A bunch of bothers. People who stole her from the place she was supposed to be. People who ripped her family apart…but.

But the fact that perhaps that story wasn’t quite the truth was enough to make her crazy. She felt a little crazy. Felt dizzy and disorientated, and the more she stared at the pretty blue green gem in her hands, the worse it got.

Especially with the words the senshi had spoken. I was like you. I was a Corrupt Eternal and I was miserable. If that was the truth, then why was the girl only the same level as Albite now? Just a super senshi? Did going to the White Moon do that to you? Did turning traitor mean you lost power?

It made sense, she supposed but.

Idly, she glanced out towards where the body was, her eyes dull and rather sad. It seemed as though the other senshi had reached her victim, and…ah.

Now they were coming right for her.

All right then.

Let them come.

Every step hurt. Cybele's arm might have been in a sling, but that only mattered so much. She wasn't supposed to be moving while everything healed up, let alone lightly jogging through the city, peeking into any suspicious buildings she could find.

Unfortunately, watching musicals on Netflix for a week or so would not do anything to bring Ganymede home, and so Cybele was out scouting every moment that she was not asleep.

It was most likely all for nothing. She knew that. Of course she knew that. She was half expecting half expecting to find Ganymede's corpse when she turned some corner, left as an example with a bloody message pinned to her chest on the tip of Aquamarine's dagger.

She thought she saw it laying there once, then twice. The third time, it did not go away when she blinked.

Only, the colors were all wrong, and when Cybele got closer, she found that it was not Ganymede on the pavement, but someone else who she was just as close to. It was Albireo.

She screamed. Cybele was in no place to repress her emotions right now, and she howled as she knelt over the body of her friend. She was still breathing, but too perfect, too still, the way that Empyrean had been after the battle. Cybele knew what that meant.

A moment later, she was charging at the nearby Chaos aura and ignoring the way that her arm complained about it. "Give it back," she hissed, even as the tears began to flow down her cheeks. "Give her back, or I'll-"

That was when Cybele actually looked up at the rooftop, and saw who it was who was standing there.

Oh.

Lysithea raised her brows, holding up the starseed. “Or you’ll what, senshi? Attack me? I am awfully high up you know. It would be a shame if I dropped it avoiding your attack.” To prove her point, she tossed the starseed a few inches into the air and caught it again, careful not to damage it, not to crush it.

Perhaps she would end up giving it back but…right now. She really didn’t want to. Especially when she had someone so…well. Someone who she had an issue with at her feet, worried for the former corrupt senshi.

“What did you mean. The last time we met, you mentioned how you were stolen when you wore black. Clothing choices really seemed to matter to you, so tell me what you meant. Were you a corrupt too? Just like she was. She told me that, you know. Told me that she was miserable. She’s just a traitor…is that what you are? A traitor in your pretty washed out pastels?”

The words sounded so harsh in her ears, but for some reason, she just felt…empty. There was no rush in stealing the starseed. Silencing a traitor hadn’t made her feel good. She was just…

Empty.

When she threw the starseed, Cybele's heart froze in her chest. When she caught it, her heart beat again.

Cybele remembered doing something similar when she'd been fighting Ganymede. She'd tossed the starseed down an alleyway to try to get a reaction out of her. She remembered watching it shatter.

Now, Cybele took a few steps and leapt up onto the rooftop before she could stop herself. Her shoulder screamed at the movement and her mind screamed at the height of it, even if she was careful to angle herself so she could not see the drop.

She bit down on her tongue against it, with slight success. She could not let this ridiculous phobia stop her when Albireo's life was on the line.Probably over, she knew. She'd never seen a starseed go back into its chest.

After everything that had happened, though, she had to try.

"I was corrupted, yes. It was all against my will. Miserable, like Albireo, yes."

A moment paused, and then she asked, "And you?"

Sweat beaded on her forehead from the height alone. She was in no place to say something that might rile up an Eternal, but she thought that she saw a familiar blank look in the woman's eyes.

Lysithea nodded and slipped the starseed into subpsace, not wanting to present herself as a target by holding it while the senshi attacked or…whatever was going to happen.

“You were corrupted. And you left, became a traitor too? Just like her. Interesting. You know, I’m sure my brother would be happy if I brought back the starseeds of two traitors tonight. Maybe the Queen would even acknowledge me the way she acknowledged the one who brought in that Princess.”

She ignored the question. No good could come from answering it. No good could come from talking to this random stranger about how she wasn’t miserable...but she wasn’t happy.

“I don’t remember coming back home. But the White Moon took me against my will first. Faustite did what he had to to get me back, that’s all. How could I be miserable when I’m home?” Well…now she had answered the question, kind of. Acknowledged it at the very least.

There were articulate things that Cybele could have said if she was arguing for Albireo's life. She could have pointed out the holes in the corrupt's story, how if she'd been in the Negaverse a long time ago and changed sides twice, been corrupted twice, it was very unlikely that she'd still be an Eternal.

Alternatively, she could have kept going for the ethos, pressed more about how the Negaverse was treating her.

Instead, she watched Albireo's starseed, her soul, vanish into nothingness. On top of that, she mentioned something about the Princess, who apparently had been brought in, and Jet rewarded for it.

She didn't feel how hard she was biting her tongue now, but she tasted the blood. It didn't help.

Her thoughts were replaced by a blank screen of static. The tears came quickly, her breath quicker. Cybele dropped to her knees.

"If you're going to take hers, take mine too," she said, her voice shaking and desperate, although the words sounded distant, as if someone else was saying them.

With Empyrean dead, she'd tried to stay strong. With Ganymede taken, she'd tried to hold on to hope. The physical pain from her own injuries, she could push through. This, though? Her first Order friend, on top of all of that? She couldn't do this anymore.

She couldn't do this anymore. She couldn't-

Lysithea paused and watched as the senshi seemed to break before her eyes. It…

…It was horrifying, honestly.

Swallowing she hesitated and reached a hand out, then drew it back, and reached out again, brushing at the tears that cascaded down Cybele’s cheeks, frowning. There was worry in her eyes now, and she wondered why…

“Why is she so important to you? She…she’s just a traitor…right? I don’t understand how she could have become so important to you. Same with you…you’re just a traitor…I…”

Lysithea hesitated and swallowed. “...I suppose that means I was a traitor too…I should just bring you both in…help you like I was helped…bring you…both home…”

Did people cry for her? Obviously Evan was looking for her…but…did people cry like this? Worry about her when she was brought home…or…

Or whatever happened.

“Tell me about it. Why you two were miserable. Tell me why you left. Why you thought it would be such a good idea.”

It was the corrupt's soft hand on her face that broke her out of her thought spiral.

It didn't bring her back all the way. Cybele was still sobbing to the point where she could barely breathe, but at least her mind could form words again.

"She's my friend," she choked out between gasps, although that wasn't quite enough to explain the way that they always giggled over shoes, or the way that Siegfried thought of the two of them as married, even back when they'd first met, or the way that they'd curled up against each other, sharing milkshakes, while they worried about the future of things.

"I loved her."

She sucked in a breath.

"The Negaverse keeps taking people I love. My father, dead. My sister, gone. Now this."

Cybele wiped at her tears and swallowed the blood from her mouth, although the other senshi's next comment had her freeze again.

"Kill me! Do. Not. Take me back. I'll be useless. I'll be miserable. I was empty. I was lonely. I didn't want to be alive the first time, it won't change. I won't survive."

She squeezed her eyes shut, shook. In her desperation, she couldn't go into any more detail than that.

She didn't want to leave the rest of the family behind, but she didn't want them fighting a shell of her, either.

The words I loved her drew the image of Ilse’s face to Lysithea’s mind…the image of finding Ilse left for dead in the middle of an alley way…it…wasn’t a nice thought, and she grimaced and shook her head to clear it. “I’m sorry for your losses. Even if you would be useless…I would take care of you. Be your friend if you wanted it. I…I want a team of my own.”

The words began to tumble out just a little more quickly. “I want to do things differently you know. I don’t like the idea of fighting. Of just going in and sending youma and a massive fireball to attack a senshi who isn’t even being hostile! And you! You just attacking when I was just trying to talk! You’re part of this problem. This…this violence. I hope that you know that.”

She bit down on her lip and shrugged. “If you really refuse…fine. I’ll just take your starseed instead. Do you have any last requests?”

"No," said Cybele, and though her cheeks were still wet, her voice came steadier than before. "There's no fixing Chaos. It consumes. It destroys everything good in the world."

She looked up at the corrupt, and for all of the sorrow and resignation in her face, in all the trembling from the height and the situation in her body, there was no fear there at the concept of facing her own death. She rolled her shoulders back, showed her chest.

"If Ganymede still lives, tell her that I- that Cybele- was sorry I couldn't protect her," she said, and two fresh tears slipped down her cheeks.

"That is my request."

Lysithea frowned, and looked unhappy with the words. That…couldn’t be true. She could make it better. She was already trying, with Cleeia. She had someone under her who was going to make her proud…and maybe if she just…if she just took Cybele and her starseed back…maybe they could make it quick, easy…the other one two…she could have two more people under her. Two former traitors who were brought home...just like…

…She had been.

Gently, she wrapped an arm around Cybele’s back and rested her hand against her chest, nodding slowly. “I…can give her that message. I’m the one helping to–” She broke off and shrugged. “And you. I’m Lysithea. So you can know who it was that killed you…You…I think you’re making a silly choice though…”

It was so easy. Her fingers slipped into the senshi’s chest, there was no resistance, no anything. It was like she was made to do this. Gently, she cradled the fragile gem in her palm and scooped it out, looking at it with thoughtful eyes.

This…

Taking the redhead’s starseed hadn’t felt good, and this just…felt…disgusting.

By the time Lysithea realized that she was crying, her face was already covered in tears, and the senshi’s bodice was growing damp with them as well as she pressed her face against her, wailing after a moment.

What the hell was wrong with her? This was her job something she had been good at…or…that was what she had been told…maybe she really needed to…talk to someone who had known her. Maybe…she didn’t know everything.

The thought was terrifying.

Gently, she moved the senshi into a secure hold in her arms, slipping the starseed back into her subspace pocket so it stayed safe, and then teleported the two of them back down to where the prone body of the other traitor lay. She hadn’t gotten her name, but…that was fine. This…nobody had to know about this tonight…nobody…

Laying Cybele beside her friend, Lysithea turned her palm up and lay the starseed in it, and then turned to the lifeless redhead, slipping her starseed back into her chest.

Without another word, she teleported, leaving the redhead to sort everything out.

…There was no way Lysithea could face Cybele’s words now that she had done this.
