Of course Naeria wanted to know more about Andreyia's research, but more than that, there was a certain cycle she wanted to break. Every time she'd been around him lately, things had been stressful. Things had gone wrong. She'd been in danger. Andreyia had saved her those times, because he was wonderful, and she liked him, but she wanted to be able to get to know him better when things were not so desperate. There was always a slight chance that some awful trap would show up in his garden, but Naeria hoped and hoped that it would not. She liked learning, and plants, and Andreyia, and not falling into some endless water pit. She still kept a careful eye out as they approaced his garden, even as she asked, "So, what kinds of plants are you growing?"

Andreiya seemed a bit excited to show off his greenhouse, because he’d spent a lot of time working on it and he was proud of his little Earth plants.
“All kinds. I’ve done extensive research on the soil and nutrients the plants can put into it. I started on the garden before I had the greenhouse, but I was informed that Earth seasons get dramatic. This was an adequate assessment. I was fortunate Commodore Lyndin approved the expenses for my research or else everything I’d been working on would have been wasted. Do you know that on Earth you can purchase land? As if you own the world? It is obscene. But this is my land,” he said proudly, beaming when the greenhouse came into view.
The lights were still on inside, to make up for the shorter winter days; it wasn’t a particularly large greenhouse, but Andreiya had procured all of the necessary materials and built it himself, so this only added to his pride.
“It will be warm inside. I have flowers. And in the next season, there will be bees. They make honey, and you can eat it. But I am researching soil and growth. But you must see them. Most of my plants are still growing, but the flowers are so colorful. I am researching how to make the soil most fertile. But I am also growing edible food. There are herbs, and vegetables. I would like to grow fruit but it will take so long. There are flowers you can eat, too. And this will be all natural. I have so many seeds I want to plant but not enough room. But I don’t think the Commodore will give me more space until I can show him how hard I am working. I hope to have something to show him, soon. I have a snake, too. But I am not keeping him prisoner! He came into my greenhouse. I have seen him eat bugs. I researched it, he will not like the cold. So he is with me because he wants to be and he is free to leave. But I have named him Dylas. So watch where you step.”
He pulled the greenhouse door open and they were greeted with warm air and the low hum of a generator; he held it open for her and seemed eager to show her his work.

"Yes. Capitalism," she said, looking over the land that the humans had decided to sell to Andreiya for money. "I have been learning about this." She did not sound impressed, at all, with their concepts of ownership, but she wasn't upset at Andreiya for taking advantage of it, either. She spent several seconds staring at the greenhouse with interest before she stepped inside. She watched where her feet went, of course. She did not want to hurt Dylas. "My favorite plant is clover," she said. "I do not know if you have it." It might not be worth growing in a place like this when it was so abundant naturally. Of course, maybe that was part of the appeal. Naeria found herself drawn to the wild things. They were so different. "It is not so useful, from what I briefly researched, but it is the first plant I saw when I arrived, so it is," she paused, "Special?" She didn't know if that made any sense. "I'm curious about what you're doing, though. I think there is a lot we can learn here about food production. That's something I've been researching, too." Her eyes had not left the ground. "Also, I would like to see the snake."

Andreiya brightened. “He will come out. He is very friendly. I have touched him before. I have no clover, though. I will look into it, they can grow in many places. That might be beneficial to the soil. The first plant I saw was grass. Don’t tell anyone, but I had an overwhelming urge to eat it when I first touched it. I did not,” he insisted, like this was very important to know.
He might have later, though.
Once he was in the greenhouse, he shuffled around and made sure to watch his feet; he had a water bottler and, after looking over a few plants, began to spritz at them.
“The first identifiable plant I saw was a dandelion. They are special to me, too. So that makes sense that clover is special to you. Did you know they are edible? Dandelions and clover. Maybe that is a good reason to research them, I think they would grow fast. Vegetables and food takes so long to grow. I know it will produce faster once the plant has reached maturity but I am impatient. Trying to speed up the growth will affect my data though. Oh! Here he is, come here, Naeria. Dylas, wake up.”
The snake was awake, watching with big, round eyes. It was only a common garter snake, no more than a foot and a half long, but curled up into a little mountain on itself. Its tongue stuck out once, twice. It didn’t seem afraid of Andreiya, nor did it have any motivation to move from next to the heater it was coiled up next to.

"There are some plants you can eat when they are sprouts," said Naeria, glancing around at the various young vegetables, which, while impressive, did not look ready to eat. "Mung beans. I read about them when I was trying to find what foods here are plant based." That had been surprisingly difficult to figure out. It seemed that humans liked to put animal products into nearly all of their food despite the sustainability issues, and while some of the other members of the Vanguard did not seem to mind, Naeria did. She didn't want to put more of a strain on the resources of this planet than strictly necessary. All of those thoughts were pushed away, though, when she saw Dylas in his little curl by the heater. "Oh," she whispered, squatting down to get a better look, although she kept some distance. "He is fantastic." His round eyes, his tongue? It was all magnificent. Although, while she was here, staring at this animal who Andreiya had insisted was free to be here, Naeria had to ask, "But, do you think that the way that the humans keep pets is always bad? I was talking to one of them about it, and-" She cut off, losing her nerve halfway through the sentence.

Dylas watched the both of them, relatively unmoving; once his little tongue stuck out, stayed out, and then he slowly retracted it back into his mouth. He watched Naeria but once more didn't seem in any way afraid or worried by the Vanguardians’ presence.
Andreiya had been curious enough about Mung beans, but when Naeria’s topic shifted, his eyes moved to her with a renewed curiosity.
Oh, how he wanted to say no.
“I have been researching it,” he said cautious, carefully.
“And I think I should not be tempted to answer that question. I have become, quite shamefully, fascinated by some of their ‘pets’. I do not think Commodore Lyndin’s perception is quite the same, but I think his view is a bit jaded. Oh, but please do not tell him I said that! I think,” he was practically squirming, and hurried to regain his composure, “that there is certainly an aspect of it that could be considered enslaving. Some humans do seem to think they are the most important species on this world and they do not seem to care at all for anything else. But! There are those that take in species other than their own, and treat them like family. Which I have been thinking, is it slavery if you are taking care of someone? Is it a punishment if you use your power and resources to protect them and give them a fulfilling life? But then,” he seemed a little more animated, “Is it not still slavery if you impose your will and idea of a ‘better life’ on them? How can you know what they want? But then, how can you release them to their natural environment when the humans have taken all of it! I do not understand, Naeria! And I have held a hamster and I do not understand. I do not know. It keeps me up at night. I have made myself sick with thought. I wish to know the truth”

Naeria kept looking at Dylas and nothing else. Looking over to Andreiya while he spoke about his thoughts felt like too much, but she was listening. "Is it shameful to want to learn more about humans and their connections to these animals, the treatment of these animals?" she said, and peeked over at him, just for a second. "That is a serious question. It may be." She shifted, swallowed, and then spat out, "Andreiya, I have ridden a horse." In that moment, Naeria knew the answer to her own question. These things were shameful. A dark violet blush spread across her features. She needed to say more, to explain herself, but the nerves were too much. Her voice failed. Needing to do something, she reached for her Comtech, trying to type out a message, and she found that to be easier. She looked over at him, pleading, then typed faster. Quote: I was in their stable, trying to decide if it would be better to release the horses or not, and just doing general research on the animals. A human found me and asked if I wanted to ride. I did not know what to say besides yes. She'd also wanted to, but she did not mention that. Even writing things out, she was not immune from nerves, and she curled up into something of a ball, her knees tucked up next to her chin. "I am sorry," she managed to add out loud, her voice barely a whisper.

Andreiya listened until she stopped speaking, and then he looked at her quizzically. His face had screwed up a bit when she stopped speaking and it was clear that he was trying to be patient.
He leaned over to read what she wrote.
“Why are you apologizing to me? You cannot blow our cover, if that is the human thing to do, then it is good that you rode it.”
He was quiet for a few seconds and barely resisted the urge to ask what it was like.
“You do not have to apologize.” He waved his hand dismissively. “I will not tell anyone else. I have held hamsters. Many of them. They are small and warm and fit into my hand. I have stroked their fur, and I have fed them. I have even dreamed of bringing one home. They are so small and vulnerable. I want to protect them.”

Some of the nerves unwound when he didn't seem mad, and they unwound even farther when he spoke of his own relationship with hamsters, how he had held them, how he wanted one. "Acting human in that instance was necessary," she said, regaining some courage, "But, Andreyia? I want to go back. I liked brushing the horse, and taking care of it." That was an admission of its own, but this time, she kept her composure. "I know it's not quite the same as with the hamsters. Horses are much larger. They probably would not have any natural predators, but I think I understand, about wanting to care for something." She understood just wanting to be around animals as much as possible. She did not think that they would overcome mushrooms as her favorite Earth life form, they were miraculous enough in their own way that it was a close thing. After a moment, she added, "I will not tell Lyndin if you decide to bring one home."

Andreiya was quiet for a moment, not because he was harboring some traitorous intentions, but because he needed a moment to process what she’d said–what she was suggesting.
“Oh, do not tempt me,” he finally said, and almost sounded like he was sulking. “I would have to tell you that you could bring a horse home then, and I do not think even you could hide that from him. Commodore Lyndin would find a hamster or a horse.”
He sighed, maybe a bit dramatically, and reached to brush his fingers over the leaves of one of the growing plants nearby.
“I will think about it, though. Maybe,” he paused, and then turned towards her just slightly, “You could introduce me to the horses? I have not seen one yet. But, I am curious.”

"I do not think a horse could live in a house. That would be cruel," said Naeria. "Even the humans know that." It was a much different concept than caring for a hamster. Naeria knew that. They were small, like the mouse that had taken to living in her closet sometimes. She could understand that a hamster might even be happy inside of t heir house. The thought of keeping something in a cage, even for protection, did still make her somewhat upset, but not to the point where she was going to argue against it. "So, you do not have to tell me I can bring a horse to the house. You can come meet her, though. Her name is Meadow, and her-" Naeria paused. Owner still felt like an awful word in her mouth, so she said, "Person said I can come visit again, whenever I want. So, I will not be breaking into any more stables or confusing any more humans." At least, she would not be confusing any humans over that.

Andreiya scoffed when she said a horse couldn’t live in a house because he didn’t know that. He hadn’t done enough research on it to be completely aware. Of course he trusted what Naeria said, but he was still huffy about it.
The prospect of meeting this giant creature, so big that it could not live in a house, suddenly became a little intimidating. But, he couldn’t let Naeria see that he was nervous, so he nodded firmly.
“Yes, I will meet her,” he decided. “I would like to accompany you when you go to visit her sometime. I have only seen small Earth creatures. But I trust you, Naeria. I support you. You and I are friends. So I want to meet your horse friend, too.”

Something felt different in her face when he called her his friend. Warmth. That was it. Her cheeks felt warm. Naeria had never been very social. She'd spent a lot of time alone, pouring over some database or the other. She never had many friends. Whenever one showed up anyway, however, like Andreiya and some of the other members of the Vanguard were doing right now, she found that she liked it. "We will go, then," she said, because of course she wanted to share her interest in horses with him. Slowly, she uncurled from where she was still kneeling near Dylas and instead looked over towards his plants again. "Oh, but you were showing me something, weren't you? I was meeting your plants. Dylas just stole my attention before you could tell me about what you are growing."

For a few seconds, Andreiya stared at her as if he had no idea what she was talking about. Suddenly, it dawned upon him, and his face lit up again. “Oh! The flowers, yes. They are over here. Goodbye, Dylas,” he said, probably out of habit; he didn’t even seem to think about it. He turned and immediately hurried off to the flowers.
“The herbs are over there,” he pointed, “And the vegetables are growing here. My tomatoes are very impressive! But everything still has a ways to go. I am nowhere near done collecting data. But I love it here.”
He paused, “Well–with all my plants. Not necessarily Earth. I mean, I love Earth because it lets me grow all these things? But. It is very complicated. I am doing this for Velenia. But maybe, I hope, I will be able to take my plants with me, too.”
He stood in front of some little white flowers and gestured for her to join him so he could show them off.

Naeria walked slowly through the greenhouse and gave the tomato plant the same kind of thorough, impressed looking-over that she'd given to Dylas a few moments ago. While she did look some at plants and not strictly mushrooms, she spent most of her time looking through meadows and woods at the edge of town, finding wild species rather than cultivated ones. This was new to her. "Earth is-," she started, looking back over to him. "As dangerous as it is marvelous. it's beautiful. It's terrible. Looking at things like this," she nodded to the flowers he was showing her, stepping away from the tomato plants, "I start to fall in love, but then something else happens." She pressed her lips together, and ran a finger over the edge of a leaf, blinking at the way it tickled. "I still miss home." Velenia was a strange concept. She knew it was the dream of many people to restore it, but to her, it was as foreign of a world as Earth. "I miss Velencya."
