“I would like a promotion, Your Majesty,” Bloodstone said as he stood in front of the Queen’s desk in her office in mid-January.

He’d politely knocked on the door and entered only when given permission, of course. He might have been bold in his request, but he wasn’t stupid. The Queen deserved the utmost respect, and he wanted to give that to her.

He just also thought that it was about time that he received a promotion for his work. Without an active, steady General, his work as a Lieutenant had gone severely underrecognized. It took years for him to get a promotion to Captain, and while part of that was due to his long hours at the hospital, he thought his skills were even more of a reason to give him the power he very much believed he deserved.

“You included me among your most trusted agents for the mission regarding the Velencians. I’ve been commanding two of my own subordinates who should soon be ready for their own promotions; Roselite, who has assisted many Generals with their paperwork and helps with keeping the database up to date, and Carnallite, who is invaluable as a Special Operatives officer. Jet has also requested my assistance with his mission, and I do not want to be at a disadvantage when the time comes.”

When Bloodstone first entered, Laurelite had intended to humor him. He was a Captain, and he’d been in the Negaverse for a while, so she knew he’d have known his way around. She knew how intimidating, how overwhelming, her energy signature could be, so she was already interested in the fact that he chose to seek her out.

Not one of the more direct, more comfortable General Sovereigns.

Her.

For a few seconds after he spoke, she just watched him. It wasn’t unkind, or particularly malicious, and yet beneath her sweet exterior, she had the eyes of a predator. Her smile was unmoving, but after she’d had her fill of deliberation, she smiled again.

“A compelling argument, Bloodstone. I appreciate that you’ve come in here and not wasted any of my time. Or yours.”

She placed her hands on the armrests of her chair and pushed herself up. The movement was so human, but then she seemed to glide around her desk to stand before him.

“I’m glad to hear Jet has reached out to you. I suppose that must mean he was as impressed with your last mission as I was. Very persuasive. I’d ask if you might think Infiltration is in your future, but you’re doing just fine in Special Operatives. Come here, let’s get this going. You know that promotions can be a bit much.”

Her hand went to his chest, pressed into it. She didn’t grab the starseed yet, if only because she wanted to give him time to adjust. She waited for the micro expressions that said he was ready for it, and gave him a few seconds to decide if there was anything more he wanted to say before she pushed the Chaos into him.

Bloodstone stood at attention as the Queen assessed his request. He didn’t think there was much to debate about, given his history with the Negaverse and his usefulness outside of the Negaverse as a trauma surgeon. He wasn’t willing to sit around and wait, just because he didn’t have a stable General to report to. He did his work, made his quota, and had already been recognized as someone the Queen could trust with secret information.

Just as Jet was trusting him not to spread information about his probable suicide mission.

There was nothing more he wanted to say as the Queen drew closer. Maybe to ask her if she would like a step stool. No, he could already hear the horrified squeaking of Roselite in his head, if he’d been there to witness the exchange.

But he braced himself as she pressed her hand into his chest, and gave her a small nod to let her know he was ready. He wouldn’t have shown up in her office if he hadn’t been ready.

And if he hadn’t been ready, he would have surely been knocked off his feet. The power of the Queen was certainly more than the General that had awoken him, and it was nothing like the power surge he’d received when promoted to Captain.

He gritted his teeth from the raw power, hands curled into fists by his side as he opened himself to the Chaos the Queen was offering him. This was what he wanted, after all.

Once it was all over, he took one staggering step backwards, trying to reorient himself to the new power coursing through him. Sweat had beaded along his brow, and fatigue had settled into his bones. But he had supplies back in his own office to settle the uneasiness that came from that much energy.

“Thank you, Your Majesty,” General Bloodstone said with a bow of his head. “If Infiltration needs agents already trained in Special Operatives, or even cross training, I would be honored to assist. Perhaps after we’ve retrieved General Jet from his mission.”

Laurelite watched, the way he braced himself, the way his hands clenched. She’d had many who said they were ready, and many who only thought they were. It was hard to predict the way Chaos would affect someone, especially when this happened so rarely. How many were ever promoted to General twice?

She was patient with him; when he staggered backwards, she seemed ready to catch him, but he didn’t need her help. He stood on his own, polite and courteous and grateful.

She liked that. She appreciated that.

“I think I might like that, General Bloodstone. We’ll talk more when you’ve had some time to adjust. I don’t want you pushing yourself too hard too quickly. I’d like for you to go rest, for now. Be at your best for when he needs you, please. Try to take it easy. You should feel better by tomorrow, but I encourage you to explore those new abilities when you have time. Just to be prepared. I want this mission to succeed.”

She looked him over approvingly and, finally, she nodded.

“I’m sure I have nothing to worry about.”

He nodded his head again as he flexed his fingers by his side. The surge of Chaos that came with the new rank made it feel like his whole body was tingling. But now he would have enough power to actually be of use. He wasn’t just the token doctor there to tell someone to rub dirt in a wound and hope for the best -- which he was sure many did instead of seeking out medical attention.

Not that their poor decisions mattered to him. It was their lives on the line, not his.

“No, you have nothing to worry about, Your Majesty,” he agreed. He took that as a dismissal, bowed one more time, and turned to leave the office. He wasn’t there to waste her or anyone else’s time. He would do as she suggested, of course. But now that he had the power, he was eager to figure out how to use it.
