Xylia plucked at the string of her bow. The girl had gone hunting in Jahaur while her mother caught up with Aishan relatives since she was not as fond of sitting around. There was also the issue of some relatives not being completely fond of her mother’s decision to live with an earthling and raise hybrid children which Xylia did her best to avoid. The last time she had gotten heated because of one of her aunts the girl had been sent home early and had to miss the next trip to Jahaur. It was pretty lame but it was what it was. Xylia huffed at the memory before sudden movement caught her attention and the girl let an arrow fly without another thought. Time to see what prey she had caught today!

Verosh had been busy gathering some rare herbs for his father. The wind earthling could not get around the jungle as easily as the warrior and so Verosh always volunteered to help out. It gave him something to do while his mind was occupied with thoughts of a certain someone, the man still trying to adjust to the fact that he had a…companion? Was that a good word for it? Verosh flushed at the thought before rustling through more of the undergrowth on the forest floor. The mushrooms his father was looking for were truly rare but they worked the best for some of his tonics. Honestly though it made Verosh feel like some sort of jungle animal whenever he had to search around the wet ground like that.
And apparently it made someone else think so too. Verosh jolted when he heard the arrow rushing past. “Hey!” He yelled before tumbling through the brush so that he could face his attacker. “Do I look like a maglardilla or something?” He groused with a frown towards the hybrid girl. What was she even doing hunting out here? He definitely did not recognize her!

As if her morning could not get any worse. Xylia’s cheeks darkened as she realized that she had nearly shot someone. “I’m so sorry!” She gasped as the older hybrid appeared from the brush. “But what are you even doing down there? It’s so dangerous when people can’t see you!” Her lips pressed into a tight line as she studied the man. Even if he seemed a lot stronger and bigger than her, the girl was not going to back down! She had just been hunting while he was the one crawling around like some maglardilla or something!

“Most people don’t blindly shoot into a bush.” Retorted Verosh as he stared at the teen. “Unless you had some very quick prey I did not see anything going past.” He would have heard if something had rustled the brush next to him. Even if the forest floor was darker his antennae were sensitive to any changes which had thankfully alerted him to the arrow in the first place! It was so reckless to just shoot an arrow like that!

Xylia bit her bottom lip sheepishly. The older warrior had a point and she was ashamed to say that she had been reckless with her actions. “I’m sorry.” She repeated her apology as she lowered her bow. Maybe it was best if she did not go hunting this morning. “If there’s anything I can do to make up for it….or rather if there’s something reasonable….was there a reason for being on the ground?” Her bi-colored gaze narrowed thoughtfully as she saw the basket lingering by the bushes. “Berry picking or something?” That was some intense berry picking if he had to get down so low! Though the large tree roots did make it hard to see everything along the ground with the way the ground dipped as the heavier rains made fairly large divots over the years. So maybe he had been looking in a lower area?

“Want to stand still and let me shoot an arrow right past your ear?” Verosh huffed before her offer made him pause. It could be useful to have someone else digging around on the ground instead of him for once. The warrior let out a sigh before gesturing for the girl to join him. “I’m looking for mushrooms that look like fans. They’re usually teal with white or pale yellow spots.” He stated as he glanced about. “They only grow along the roots of these particular trees so you have to go down where the ground dips since water gathers the most there.”

“Oh.” Xylia blinked with surprise. “Mushrooms make a lot of sense.” Who knew mushroom hunting could be so dangerous? The teen bit back her chuckle before joining the warrior. “So they should be around these silvery trees then. Got it.” She nodded her head before peering towards the side. “Oh!” Already she had caught sight of one and Xylia wasted no time in crawling across one of the twisting roots to pull it from the ground. She wasn’t one to really care about the status of her clothing after all. She could always just change when she went back to her family’s home.

Huh. Verosh tilted his head with confusion as he watched the girl almost instantly find the thing he had been looking for all morning. “If we can find at least five more that would be good.” They had a potent effect which should be enough to supply his father’s medical cabinets for now. Now could she be that lucky another five times? That was the true question.

“Five more.” That should be easy enough, right? How hard could it be to find a mushroom? Xylia grinned as she scooted back away from the roots and brought over the mushroom to the hybrid. “Here.” She handed it over before spinning around on her heel. There were at least seven of those trees in this area alone. She knew she had walked past a few one her way here from her grandmother’s home as well. “If I find five more do I get five more arrows?” She teased cheekily before darting around another tree to keep looking.

“You’ll get forgiven for one arrow. How about that?” Verosh shook his head towards the girl as he watched her darting about the trees. It seemed like she was having better luck than him with finding the mushrooms so it would be a shame to chase her away now. And so Verosh endured the childish behavior because the mushrooms were much more important than his thin patience.

“Hah! Fair enough.” Xylia made a face before going around another tree and uncovering a clump of three of the mushrooms. “What about this?” She held up the trio triumphantly before returning them to Verosh. If anything he was lucky that she had shot an arrow at him! Just look at all of the mushrooms she was finding today!

“Good find.” Verosh nodded as he accepted the find and tucked it safely away in the medicine bag. “So just one or two more.” He mused as he too started glancing about. Admittedly it was a bit frustrating that he was having worse luck than the girl, but maybe it was a beginner’s thing or she secretly was good at gathering. Though he would have to worry about someone who attacked so quickly without thinking first. What type of hunter would that girl turn into?

“Yes, yes.” Xylia smiled despite her exasperation at the warrior’s focus on the mushrooms. Couldn’t he show how impressed he was a bit better? Not that she lived for compliments! But still it was nice to hear someone being excited over her accomplishments…on occasion. “Maybe that large tree over there?” Xylia stopped and pointed to an ancient thing twisting from the earth. It’s roots were rounder than she was and twice as long!

“Perhaps.” Verosh blinked as he studied the tree that she had pointed out. The massive thing surely had lived longer than all of the others he had inspected during his morning walk. “Just be respectful, alright?” He called out before following after the teen, his gaze narrowed thoughtfully. This wasn’t a sacred guardian, right? They were far from Chibale so surely it would be fine to take whatever they could find in this area. It was also fairly dangerous to walk around the tree with its larger roots because they did not know if anything like a radaku or even a menzuri had taken shelter in the darkness there.

“Of course!” Xylia swiftly moved forward, darting about vines and other roots, but when she came up to the big tree the teen found herself a bit overwhelmed. It was a beautiful tree and the silvery specks so common had darkened to almost black over the ages. There was still a sheen to the bark and she could see new flecks of silver growing over the older ones that had changed over time. So it was a healthy tree, just weary and slowing down as the ages passed along. Xylia’s fingers traced over the bark lightly before she finally climbed up the first of the roots to check in the damp soil beneath for any growing mushrooms. They were fortunate that it wasn’t raining, otherwise this would have been a much tougher situation! Slick roots plus mud and rushing water? No thank you.
