Destiny City was uncomfortable during the cold winter nights, and Arnica greatly preferred the only slightly cool sensation of Mirrorwalking when he had to move from one place to another so late.
Of course, that always came with the possibility of running into someone.
Like, now.
He’d only been out for a while because he really didn’t want to deal with the snow, but he convinced himself that he could still say he was productive if he spent some time in Mirrorspace. Not much! But, some. He was on his way home, or at least on his last lap around the park, when he stepped from a mirror and felt–
Well, that.
A Corrupted Senshi, very nearby. He didn’t think he had anything to worry about–they were supposed to be on the same side. Ish. Still, he didn’t want anyone to think he was trying to be sneaky, so after he stepped out of the mirror and began to make his way out of the trees it was hidden in, he announced, “Just passing through, not looking for trouble.”
He couldn’t see her, didn’t know where she was, but he figured that it was always better safe than sorry.

Being alone was nice sometimes, though, being alone while being powered up was even nicer, for the biting cold wasn’t quite so biting with the layer of Metallia’s protection between herself and the elements. Sometimes she liked to pretend that she was wrapped in a hug, though she knew that was utterly silly, and she would never let anyone hear such nonsense. Except Iduna..Iduna could hear it.
When she was alone in the wintertime…well. There was nothing but sweet silence.
Of course, that meant the moment she felt the sudden aura and heard the voice pretty much right behind her, Lazurite went into a panic, standing up swiftly and throwing out a punch just out of instinct.
Somehow she managed to hit the shoulder of the visitor, and when her brain caught up, she noticed that the aura didn’t feel…bad...
…just not the same as…but…
He was wearing black too so…
“....What…the ******** are you?” She dropped her hand, her voice sounding shaken but not…hostile.

“Ow,” Arnica huffed, and took a step back as he rubbed at his shoulder. “Are you hitting me? I just said I didn’t want trouble.”
His brows were knit and he frowned deeply, annoyed but not mad.
“I’m a Dark Mirror Senshi, just passing through? You know, trying to head home so I can get out of this cold. Are you okay?”
She sounded like her voice was shaking, and maybe it was the temperature, or maybe she was on edge for any other reason. He didn’t feel any energy signatures around, but if she’d just come from trouble, maybe that explained why she was still high strung. He glanced around but didn’t see anyone–or anything–abnormal.
His shoulder didn't hurt that much, it had really just been the surprise of it all; satisfied that he'd go home without anything more than a bruise (if he was particularly unlucky) he stopped rubbing at his arm and instead planted both hands on his hips so she knew he wasn't trying to attack her.

“Where did you come from? You just popped out of the ground…what the hell! You can’t just…appear like that…Did you teleport?” Lazurite was squinting at him, confused and growing more so by the moment. He had no cracks on his forehead or chest and…that just…wasn’t right.
“I’m not sure what a Dark Mirror Senshi is but um. I’m Lazurite. I’m not…I mean, I’m okay you just scared the living daylights out of me. I wasn’t…expecting company and there wasn’t anyone and poof. There you were. I’m sorry that I hit you. It’s a bad habit I have when I get scared…I punch. You can’t take me into a haunted house or I just attack everyone who jumps out at me.”
She hesitated and held out her hand, much more slowly this time and flashed a smile. “I’m Lazurite…now tell me who and just what you are? You wear black like me, so you must be like me but. I’ve never heard of a Dark Mirror Senshi before.”

Though Arnica watched her a bit cautiously, he extended his hand to her. “I’m Arnica. Dark Mirror Senshi. I came out of the mirror,” he said, and he shook her hand as he gestured over his shoulder with the other. “We can pass through mirrors. Not every mirror, only ones we know where to find. It’s kind of like teleporting. Or really, just taking shortcuts. All mirrors are connected. There’s a whole other world in there. Boring, pretty empty. You’ve never met a Dark Mirror Senshi before?”
He seemed a bit incredulous, but then–she was only a basic senshi, so maybe that shouldn’t have been so surprising. She could have still been new.
“You throw a pretty good punch. Sorry for scaring you. I tried to give you warning, though. What’s got you so spooked?”

“I didn’t know that at all, that’s neat!” She smiled, a bit more relaxed now, shaking his hand before pulling hers away. “I haven’t met a Dark Mirror Senshi before, no. But, it’s nice to do it now!” Lazurite flushed, pleased by the compliment. “You had me spooked! I was seriously just sitting here enjoying how quiet the forest was and thinking that it was nice and I was alone and then wham! I know you spoke and warned me but.”
She gave a laugh. “It was like…imagine zoning out when you think you’re alone and then a voice comes out of the darkness and you hadn’t been expecting it!” She grinned. “I’m glad that you think I throw a good punch. I told you, I’m dangerous in haunted houses. What are you the senshi of? I’m the senshi of nectar and I have to admit. It’s hard to fight with magic like mine…though it draws people’s attention, that’s for sure.”

“Nectar? I guess I can see that,” he said, giving her a quick look over. “I’m Mandragora. You should be careful out here, a lot of weird things keep happening in the city.”
Like, it was Destiny City though. Weird things were always happening.
Just, a little more so than usual.
“I’ve been trying to find a giant owl, it’s been chasing people and trying to break into places. Heard that it doesn’t seem like it’s a youma, either. No one’s sure what it is from what I can tell. But then, no one seems to know much of anything. At least it keeps things interesting. Don't suppose you've heard any interesting rumors recently, have you? I'm sorta into all that weird local lore and weird rumors."

“Oh my god! That thing tried to eat me! I swear to God I was in a staring match with it and then this b***h senshi came up and attacked me with a snowball and it was awful. Then the damn owl just…swooped and I thought I was a goner. God I just wish I could teleport so I wouldn’t have been so freaked out.” She shuddered, watching Arnica with a little more interest. “Why would you want to find it? It’ll rip you right in half. It didn’t feel like anything, it might just be a mutant bird to be honest.”
Lazurite huffed. “You really would do better to just leave this one alone. There has to be safer local weird lore out there…some that can’t rip you in half without thinking about it.”

Arnica’s eyes flashed with interest. “Oh, you did see it? You’re sure it wasn’t a youma, that it had to be something else? I mean–I suppose it wouldn’t have been a youma if it attacked you. Or–you’re in the Negaverse, I thought that would make a difference, but…”
Like he knew how the mind of a youma worked.
“I can’t help but be curious! I’m careful. And I’m a Super Senshi, I’ve got a little extra power now, I can use it whenever I feel like I need to. There are safer local weird lore, but,” he shrugged. “I want the juicy stuff. I love a good mystery, and spooky things. I just like weird things. I want to know how they work. I want to disprove the ones that are just hoaxes and ignorance. I’ve always been big on the truth, that’s all. Well, and a good story. Can’t help it.”

“It didn’t feel like a youma! It didn’t feel like anything, really. Um, as far as I know, youma don’t like us corrupts, they think we smell bad or something, but even so, I’m sure it would have gone for the senshi in white rather than me if it had a choice. I really just think it’s a mutated owl, which…sucks for us and for the bird too! Being stuck in a city like this.”
Lazurite sighed heavily. “I do feel bad for it, and I’m sure I’d want to do more if it hadn’t threatened me so badly.” He was stronger, that was true but still. It would be able to snap him in half if it wanted, super senshi or not.
“Well, if you’re going after it, bring yourself a sheep or something for bait okay? I don’t blame you for liking spooky things and weird things, that’s neat! But…dangerous things are…dangerous. And there’s enough crazy stuff in the city to worry about man slicing owls, you know?” She hesitated and looked kind of eager. “...What have you disproved? Or…anything?”

Arnica grinned, apparently delighted with this line of questioning. “Oh, a lot of things. I’ve got whole blogs devoted to it. A few, I don’t like to put all my eggs in one basket. Maybe I’ll show you some time. You looking for a partner in crime, or something? We could go investigate a mystery together some time if you wanted. I heard that there’s supposed to be a ghost haunting one of the old historical houses, I got invited to go investigate it. And there’s a mirror, so I can pop in any time I want. I can take a guest, if you’d be interested.”
Although, it was very cold tonight, and he shivered.
“...Maybe not tonight. Maybe after I have time to go home and pack a sweater. I was actually on my way home, I need to thaw out a bit. I don’t know how you can be out here with so little on, aren't you freezing?”

“Seriously? Hell yeah, I don’t have anything I’m looking for on my own, but I’d be down for some scooby dooing with you sometime?” Lazurite grinned and then took note of him shivering. “Why don’t we call it quits for tonight, we can make plans to meet up again?”
She really wanted to. The idea of sleuthing through the city looking for strange things sounded oddly appealing. Maybe someday she would be able to have Iduna by her side for it too…and that…
“Can we exchange numbers or something? When we go out again we can make sure we have jackets!” Hopefully though…hopefully they wouldn’t meet up with that insane owl but…
Perhaps they could find something else cool.

“Yeah, here,” he said, and without missing a beat he reached into his subspace and pulled out a nondescript, white business card with simple black font. It had a phone number and an email address, but no name. “Just shoot me a message however you like, we’ll set something up. I can send you a list of things we can check out and I’ll let you pick. We’ll see if we can get into some trouble. Oh, or.”
He flashed her a smile. “Not too much, if you don’t want. Just enough to keep things interesting. Or be a little fun. If you’re worried about getting spooked, we don’t have to go to any haunted houses. Although, I have to say. I’d be really interested to see what you could do to a ghost.”

“That’s slick!” Lazurite grinned and slipped the card into her own subspace pocket, laughing softly. “Look, I’m down for trouble, just not giant owls. Ghosts though. I could handle ghosts. Expect my text, Arnica. And I might bring a friend too, maybe. If that’s okay. She’s a White Moon girl, but, she’s super sweet. I’m courting her over to the right side of things.”
She winked and gave a little wave. “Go get something warm to drink! I’ll see you soon, okay Freddie? We’ll find something fantastic and creepy!
With one last waggle of her eyebrows, Lazurite headed off into the night, pleased with what happened, even though it had started with a pretty big startle…she liked when things ended with a friend.
