Laike never intended to go anywhere — at least, he had no destination in mind. He only cared for efficiency.

In his back pocket of his black jeans was his phone, turned upside-down, with Pokemon Go running. Naturally, he had battery saver on, so the thing trembled on occasion when he walked by a wild pokemon. Oft he hadn't bothered to look what it was before passing it by.

And he hadn't bothered to look because he was playing Pokemon Brilliant Diamond on his Switch while he incubated eggs in his back pocket. He had Home, too, so whatever hatched could easily be transferred to Brilliant Diamond. He hoped for an Eevee that he could then breed into an Eeveelution army, with which he would conquer the entire rest of the game with no viable opposition whatsoever

Laike considered this master plan a clever one. All he needed to do was let his feet guide him until he hatched the egg, transferred the egg, and absolutely destroyed the rest of the game.

What he didn't count on was wandering into the park where he met Jet. And having played Genshin that morning, he knew today was Saturday (as he had been hunting Philosophies of Gold in preparation for the incoming Zhongli rerun), which entailed a very real possibility of running into Jet.

It wasn't that he was avoiding Jet because he hadn't made up his mind one way or another — telling his sister about their meeting had long since confirmed what he should do — but he was avoiding Jet because running into him required a conversation. And Laike was both terrible and terrified at conversations.

He hoped, then, that if he looked too engrossed in his game, Jet would be polite enough to leave him to it (if he was there — and Laike wasn't about to look up and find out).

Jet couldn't help but assume that Laike's presence in the park meant that he'd decided he wanted to join after all. Which was a good thing because Jet really did believe that Niter would be a good fit. Eventually. He was still young and could use some growing up maybe, but Jet wasn't about to take away his Gameboy or whatever they called it these days. It wasn't as though he'd had the time or money to play games.

"I was hoping you'd show up," he called out to Laike as he closed his notebook he'd been writing in. Or composing. He kept the notebook with him, but put it into his subspace pocket for the time being as he got up to approach the other.

"Did you decide to join? We can skip the small talk if you'd like," he offered, because it was better to be done quickly than drag it out longer. They had a lot to go over once Laike became an agent-- or more likely, a Senshi if Jet's luck had anything to say about it.

It was in Laike's nature to assume that, when someone called out with no name, they probably weren't referring to him. Always a shy, forgettable thing, he did his level best to remain a wallflower. Often, it worked.

This time, it didn't. He had to look up from the screen when Jet walked into his peripheral vision, and it was then that he realized this was happening. Jet had talked about joining last time, and while Laike didn't think it was a joke, he also doubted that he would seriously make it in. At best, it was a nice gesture on Jet's part to try to get Laike involved in… Well, things he wasn't completely familiar with, yet. At worst, Jet was setting Laike up to be the butt of a joke. Whether it was either of those or something in between, Laike was reasonably sure he'd survive.

His sister still wanted him to join, though.

Caught, Laike saved his game and lodged it in his bookbag. This was happening now. He was going with his sister's advice, and all her weird encouragement that he could definitely make it into a shady organization that recruited teenagers at parks. He had argued that they couldn't actually have high standards if they were doing that, and Laike was too busy playing Bloodborne to argue against her.

He took a breath. Felt his soul fly out of his body.

"Um, yeah, small talk's not… really my thing. Unless you had something you wanted to talk about?" Not that Laike particularly did, or that he had all that many questions to ask just yet.

Jet was just pleased that he came back. He didn’t seem like the type to be all that power hungry, but a chance at a better life for himself and his family was definitely something to consider. At least that was how Jet felt. If he had a family outside of the Negaverse.

“I don’t really like small talk either,” he admitted. “You never told me your name, by the way. But if you’re ready, just say so and we can get you in a better position to protect yourself from any loose youma. And anyone in general, actually. And of course the health care. And if you need help with finances or housing or anything like that, we’ve got plenty of resources.”

Maybe he was more excited than he meant to sound. Niter was definitely different from Lazurite and Cymophane, but that was okay. The Negaverse needed more than just warriors.

"Oh. Right." He ducked, felt his face flush. "It's Laike. But, if you needed my real name for something, it's Li." He hoped there wasn't a whole bunch of paperwork to fill out. Joining any kind of club or organization tended to mandate that when he was in school. Maybe that was to weed people out.

Maybe it wasn't such a great idea to agree to join up because his sister was interested in him doing it. Really, she was the one Jet should've been recruiting, and if he had realized sooner that he'd run into Jet, he might've taken her along and introduced them. But she wasn't there, and Jet was looking for an answer,

and Jet sounded really excited for an answer, and it was rude to refuse, so,

"Um, sure, let's go. Is it far from here?" He assumed Jet had to take him to a Place to get him acquainted with everything, and pass off whatever handbooks they had, maybe give him his own youma to take care of like it was a police dog, or something. Really he hadn't asked any questions about that, and he probably should've.

But He would've been disappointed if he stalled.

"We don't have to go anywhere, yet," he said, because Jet didn't want to completely overwhelm Laike. He nodded and stored the name away in his memory.

"My civilian name is Ilian Jones. And I'm sorry, but this will probably hurt a bit, but it'll be over fast," he said with a sympathetic frown as he stepped close enough to be able to reach out and sink his hand into Laike's chest.

He wanted to get it done as quickly as possible. He knew it was going to take a bit of Laike's energy to recover, but he had plenty of snacks with him, and drink to stay hydrated. He searched for his starseed and grabbed hold of it and--

Jet laughed. It was short and almost amued. Resigned.

"Nevermind, we do have to go somewhere," he sighed as he withdrew his hand from the boy's chest. And instead, he took hold of Laike's arm, and teleported them to just outside Axinite's office.

He hadn't thought much of Jet's gesture. Then he did, when the General's hand got a lot closer to his chest, and he wondered if he ******** up, if Jet was gonna grab him by the shirt and throw him into the treeline, or hold him still and punch him in the face. Did secret organizations with magical pets punch people in the face to initiate them? Was this like a rush?

Was he joining the Fight Club Fraternity? Laike flinched, expecting a punch, but —

He felt a strong pain instead. From Somewhere. Something sharp, metallic, hidden. He looked down, nearly s**t himself when he saw Jet's hand was stuck up to the wrist inside his chest. Somehow. Through his shirt. He didn't have words for that.

Laike stared at Jet, unsure what to do. Unsure what he was saying or what any of this was supposed to mean. It wasn't a panicked thing, but —

He didn't have time to finish the thought before the pair vanished.
