Jadarite arrived at the door on the hour, not a minute late or a minute early.

Technically, she'd been in the castle since mid-afternoon, since that had been when she'd been able to find a General to teleport her to Negaspace, but she had passed the time by doing some work on her laptop in an empty chamber until the time of her appointment came up. She would not interrupt General-King Lepidolite or bother him with her imprecision by being early any more than she would let him wait on her.

She was not nervous, as the request that she had come to make was reasonable and would benefit the Negaverse as much as it would benefit her. However, she did stand slightly stiffly in a show of formality as she reached up to rap on the door three times.

"Lieutenant Jadarite reporting."

She had learned to play the part of a polite recruit.

Come in, Lieutenant Jadarite,” Lepidolite called from behind his door; he seemed in a good mood, and if this wasn’t obviously business he might have even been a bit more playful. He wasn’t often here, if only because he spent most of his time at Romano’s, but he seemed pleased with the change of scenery. His door was heavy but not too difficult to open. Like him, everything about his office was impressive.

He had great wood furniture that spoke of sophistication and luxury. Practical, of course, but his office said plenty about him. It was extravagant, a symbol of his success. It was impressive, it was comfortable.

It wasn’t unlike his office at Romano’s.

Framed portraits of rare birds. Shelves of expensive looking books. Trophy cases, full of an array of treasures. Magical artifacts. Broken weapons. A few Senshi brooches.

Behind his desk, a massive display of medals hung behind him.

He didn’t need to remind anyone that he was a General King. But, he was clearly proud of it.“

The office had a large computer and a television set up. He probably could have used this room as a movie theater if he really wanted to–and, honestly, there was no reason to assume he didn’t.

He looked like he was keeping busy at least; his tablet was open in front of him and he smiled at her when she entered. “Let’s get this started, make yourself comfortable.”

Jadarite cracked the door open just far enough that she could step inside, then shut it behind her. The office itself got a cursory glance, particularly the medals and spoils. It seemed that Lepidolite was an impressive man, perhaps the most impressive of the General Sovereigns, and Jadarite was happy that she'd found herself in his branch.

She didn't spend too long looking at the trappings, though. Instead, she made her way forwards and perched on the edge of the chair across the desk from him, her back straight and her hands folded neatly in her lap. She looked into the General King's eyes, her own gaze solid and unflinching.

"Sir," she acknowledged, with the slightest nod.

"First, I wanted to apologize for not being present at the latest mission. I was in Los Angeles at the time working on a social media project, and I was unable to get in touch with someone who could bring me back" she said, but she only sounded so apologetic. Her excuse was rock solid.

"I hope to make it up to you, now and in the future," she said, and from her subspace pocket, she drew a starseed. It shimmered in the way that only a senshi's could, and she placed it on his desk without looking down.

Lepidolite waved his hand dismissively. “Please, there’s no need to apologize for doing your job. Infiltration requires the utmost focus, you can’t just drop a project halfway through. You might learn all the reputation you built up.”

All that hard work, wasted?

No, infiltration was different. They had an important job, one that wasn’t always on the battlefield.

But, he seemed pleased with her offering; his eyes seemed to sparkle and his face split into a grin.

“Of course, I won’t say no to a gift like this.”

He lifted it up to examine it and nodded again, approvingly. “But I can’t help but wonder how you were planning on ‘making it up’ to me in the future.”

It was no surprise that she wasn’t in trouble, since she had been doing important work, but Jadarite’s smile cracked wider when Lepidolite complained waved off her apology, and wider still at the way he looked at the starseed.

He wanted to hear about her future plans, and Jadarite nodded.

“Well, for one thing, the trip was a success. I spoke with a sponsor, filmed two collaborations, and I’m all set to launch new, independent streaming and video content. I can work in any necessary Negaverse messaging as that gets established.”

Technically she’d been working on her own for a while now, but it would be nice to make it official and publish work that didn’t have someone else’s name attached to it.

“That said, I’d like to be kept more in the loop for the central organization, to see what else I can work on. That’s why I’m here,” she said, and sobered again. “I’d like to request transfer to a new General. There have been times that it’s been difficult to keep up, with Marcasite gone.”

Lepidolite nodded in what seemed to be both understanding and agreement. “Look at you!” he said, with the enthusiasm of a very proud teacher. “That’s wonderful, Jada. I can’t wait to see. You’ll have to send me the links.”

For professional reasons, not because he needed an excuse to watch videos on the internet.

“Do you have a General in mind, or do you want a recommendation? I can pull some up, we can go over options. Oh! But first.”

He laced his fingers together and leaned forward, pressing his elbows into the table. “You’ve been with us for a while. And it’s obvious you’re making strides. I don’t know how many Generals are looking for new Lieutenants, but. A new Captain, though. That’s in high demand. What do you say, are you interested?”

Jadarite wasn't sure that Lepidolite was the type who would like gaming vlogs, but she wasn't about to refuse an order to show off her content, and so she gave a crisp nod.

"Suggestions would be helpful," she said, in response to his question. "As I said, I've been out of the loop. I was never introduced much outside of my team, and although I'm trying to be more proactive about getting connected now, I might need a jumping off point-"

She cut off when he mentioned the promotion, and she blinked, but only once.

It wasn't quite a surprise. Of course when she'd come into a General King's office with a starseed and good news, she'd had her motives beyond just asking for reassignment, but hearing the offer made her smile widen again.

"I'm interested yes," she said, keeping her tone steady. "It would certainly help with networking if I could come to the castle whenever I need to."

Lepidolite grinned, obviously enthusiastic about her interest. “Then, let’s make that happen first, and we’ll work the rest out.”

He rose from his seat and approached her, held out a hand to help her up. “It’s not pleasant, but I’m sure you know what to expect already. I’m not going to pretend like it’s fun to get promoted. That’s the hard part. But the fun comes after, I promise.”

It’s only the first part, the first few seconds, that were miserable.

“So, don’t you worry about anything. I’ll take good care of you. And, when we’re done, I’ll see if we can find any General you might be compatible with. I want you to have a good relationship, someone who can support you and see that you’ve got all the resources you need to go your furthest. You ready?”

Jadarite nodded, unflinching. As Lepidolite suggested, she did not worry. Pain was part of growth. She knew that. When she thought back to her recruitment, it was not the pain that stood out to her. It was the rush of power that had come afterwards. She was ready to do that again.

When he reached out to her, she took his hand and rose. Her other hand gripped the back of the chair, tightly, against what was coming.

“All that sounds good,” she said. Power and support at her fingertips were two of the reasons she enjoyed being part of the Negaverse, after all. The promise of more of both was just what she’d been hoping for.

Her smile was bright.

“I’m ready.”

Lepidolite nodded; she was on her feet, and if she was ready so was he.

Her smile would have been motivation enough even if he wasn’t already eager.

He didn’t place his hand on her chest, didn’t give her the extra few seconds to acclimate to the pressure; he was efficient and swift. His hand slid into her as easily as if it were passing through water, and he found her starseed immediately. His hand was large but otherwise unimposing, and wrapped completely around her starseed.

Lepidolite pushed power in from all around it, and it bled into her core all at once.

It was painful, but it was fast.

He kept one hand on her shoulder to make sure she was steady and retracted his hand, all the while soothing, “There you go, you’ve got this. You’re doing great.”

Jadarite was determined not to whimper pitifully like she had during her corruption, and also a dozen or so times since, in battle. She bit her lip instead, giving Lepidolite a second small nod to confirm that she was ready.

To her credit, she did not whimper when the Chaos came. She did not squeak.

She did crumple around Lepidolite's hand in a way that was reminiscent of a ragdoll, but afterwards, she straightened as if it had been nothing, and she stood before him as a Captain of the Negaverse.

"Thank you, sir," she said, and although her voice was raspy for a moment, when she sat back down in the chair, she sat as poised and straight as before. She blinked away stars, and then continued, "So. Generals."

Lepidolite extracted his hand, brows raised high on his forehead in an obviously impressed expression. And then, he laughed–warm and inviting and proud.

“Back to business so quickly, I like that. I like that a lot, Captain Jadarite.”

He tested the name out, and it felt right.

He clasped her shoulder and gave it a friendly squeeze before he returned to the seat at his desk. He didn’t need to flip open his tablet, he took one good look at her like this and then nodded, to her, to himself.

“You’ve got a lot of fire in you. I think I’ve got a General in mind.”

Captain. Captain.

Captain Jadarite
.

Oh. She liked that. She liked that a lot. It made all of the pain, and the biting her lips to keep from squeaking, and even weathering the attack of the senshi that she'd starseeded so, so worth it.

Of course she was not going to rest on her laurels. She was not done with proving herself to the Negaverse, not by any means. There was another title she'd rather have, but that was for later. She would let herself enjoy this moment, for the time being.

There would be champagne involved, once her scheduled meeting was over and the residual ache in her chest went down. For now, she nodded, trying to focus more on work.

"I do try to stay driven, yes," she said. "And I'm listening."
