Prompt 5 (Ice Bath): Rainfall is rare in Destiny City during Winter; there have been a few light showers between the occasional snow but it’s never been enough to be significant. In some places, it’s just enough for a thin layer of ice to cover the ground and make it a little slippery, but ultimately it’s not enough to worry about. In an inconspicuous place in town, you step into one of these icy puddles and the thin layer of ice shatters. The hole itself seems maybe three feet wide and if you’ve ever been in the area before you know it’s just a pothole a few inches deep at most. Except, when the ice shatters, you fall, plummeting into it as if it were a lake of icy water. It’s pitch black around you and only pale blue lights shimmer above you. The darkness is never ending and you can’t make out the details of anything except the shrinking hole above you. Maybe you remember how to swim and pull yourself out, maybe you black out and feel someone else pulling you out--either way, your frozen, soaking body is pulled from the puddle. The chill is immense, but if you look at the hole after being pulled out, all you can see is the ground below. There’s no sign that what you just experienced is real--except for the fact that you’re still soaking wet.
Davie was walking his bike home from his job - he'd had a flat tire a mile or two back, and there'd been no where to stop and call home. He frowned as a shiver ran from his head to his toes. He was careful to look where he was going. It had drizzled this morning -strange for a Destiny City winter - and now it was cold enough that the puddles had frozen over causing a thin layer of ice. The ice was slippery so he had to be careful or he could slip and fall and hurt himself. Guess it is a good thing I'm not riding my bike. He thought.
Suddenly to his horror, he heard ice cracking under his foot as he put his right down. His breath caught in his lungs, his heart paused, his bicycle fell to one side as he suddenly did what should not have been possible - that exact place was a pothole no more than a few inches deep - he been here many times before and yet, he was swallowed by it... he plunged downward into an ice cold lake. Further and further he slipped.
He could not make out anything around him, it was all black ice water. Up above was the cracks through which he had fallen - through which he could see distant light, but all that was slipping further and further away as was his consciousness, he couldn't breath, his heart struggling to pump and his ankle screamed with pain. The last thing he remembered before passing out was a strong hand pulling him out.
He woke up in the ER. They were drying him off and trying to bring his temperature back to normal. His foster mother Laurie and his twin, Dawn stood looking in the window. When the doctor came, she explained that some of the city's crazy weirdness seemed to be at work, for just as he had been pulled out of that hole, the ice pond beneath had vanished, and yet he was still ice cold, soaking, nearly drowned, and his ankle badly sprained. What a night. He went back to sleep. It was a feverish, yet chilly sleep. His dreams were uninteligible.
He woke up admitted to a double room, his roommate gone for the moment. His sister lay asleep on the chair next to the bed. She looked uncomfortable. At least she had stopped singing. Yes he had heard about that. Laurie, their foster mother would be talking to the nurse or getting some snack or drink or something in the hall.
He tried to sit up - pain shot through his leg, and he cried out, waking his sister. "Hey there, you've got to be careful, your ankle is badly sprain." "That much is obivious." He grumbled as he lay back down. She frowned, hurt. He feel bad so he grinned, chuckled and said, "So uh, where was my common sense, tonight?" She stared at him and then started to giggle. To make her laugh... that made his day - er night - even a night like tonight.
