Thankful

Solo or RP Format
Counts as 5 RP growth Points
Solo word minimum is 750, RP post minimum is 7

It is this time of the year, when the weather starts to get cooler and the crops are all brought in, that the people of Tendaji begin to look back. They look back at the friends they've made over the past year, the people they've come to love, and those they have lost. It's a monumental time of self-reflection, of examining the world they live in and everything that they went through over the past year.

And it's a time to give thanks. Thanks to their gods, to each other, to themselves. It's a beautiful reflective time of year, and one that many Tendaji natives will celebrate with little gifts, special harvest feasts, or a moment alone with those they love.

[ Sometimes we don't spend enough time thanking others for all they do. Or thanking ourselves for the strength and growth we've gone through. In this prompt, we're looking for self-reflection, contemplation, and moments of thanks between your characters and the important ones in their lives. ]

WC - 751

Another year and that just meant she was able to do more things. Of course some of those things weren’t what she was looking forward to. Terrwyn knew that her stepmother had plans. Still, she knew she had plenty to be thankful for. She still had her family. No matter how messed up it was. Each of her siblings were still healthy. And even if the younger ones got on Terrwyn’s nerves she was at least thankful that they were alive and not sick. Not to mention her own health.

The year had brought her a new friend of sorts. And while she wouldn’t get to see him that often, if at all, she still knew he was out there and doing what he did best. Heal others. Not to mention his adorable children.

And while the new year and all its things would bring uncertainty she was still thankful for everything that had happened so far. So Terrwyn was bringing a small basket of food as an offering to the spirits. She approached the altar quietly and with respect, knowing that if she were to anger the spirits now then her next year could be more than a little bad.

She stayed quiet as she knelt in front of the altar and set the basket down at her side. She dropped her gaze to the offerings in the basket so that she could find the small plate of flat bread. She’d made it herself so that the spirits could tell that she had put effort into it. Terrwyn wanted those who had passed to know that she had nothing but respect for them and all they had done to allow her to get to that point. When she found the plate, buried under a few fruits, she brought it out and placed it on the altar with care.

She was careful not to tip it or spill anything but also to make sure the plate was set down softly and not just dropped. Terrwyn always thought that it was rude to just slam things down on the altar or to let stuff drop down. Once the plate was set down gently she reached into the basket to pull out the fruits that she’d gone out and picked. It would have been easier to use the stuff that was already in the kitchen but it wouldn’t show that she did the hard work. Terrwyn had climbed the trees and plucked these fruits from the branches herself.

Those were placed down just as gently as the plate and she went in for the final offering. A bottle of wine and a cup. The cup was placed on the altar next to the plate and then she opened the bottle so that she could pour some of the wine into it. Slowly she filled the cup until it was three fourths of the way full. Terrwyn then capped the bottle and set it on the altar near the cup just as softly.

“Thank you.” She said quietly. “For lookin’ out for me and my family.” Her green gaze stared hard at the offering she’d set out. It didn’t look like much in the long run but she knew the efforts she’d put behind them. And while her family had the money to spend on something extravagant she thought the hard work behind the homemade bread and self picked fruits would be more meaningful.

“I hope you like m’offering.” She muttered silently.

It did worry her that the spirits would think she was being cheap but in truth it had never crossed her mind to spend money. Terrwyn had always thought that her hands should do the work. Not her coin purse.

“If you don’t like it then next year ‘ll spend the coin for som’thin’ better.” Her head nodded slightly as she spoke.

For a few minutes she sat like that, just staring at what she’d put out. The flat bread was unimpressive but she could recall the time she took to make it. The effort she used to knead the bread and make it just right. Considering she wasn’t a baker, or a cook at all really, it was quite the accomplishment. After some time had passed she got up from her position in front of the altar and picked up the basket. With a small bow of her head to the spirits she turned to walk away. She had another year to face and more stuff to discover being thankful for.
