Picking Out The Perfect Gift

Solo or RP Format
Counts as 5 RP growth Points
Solo word minimum is 750, RP post minimum is 7

It's that time of the year again! Time to give presents to loved ones in the typical ceremonies of the people of Tendaji. But the question is - what is the perfect gift?

[ We're looking for two things in this world event. 1) Who is your character getting a gift for and why? 2) What exactly would be the perfect gift? You can spend the whole prompt reflecting on these decisions, asking a friend for advice on the gift to give, or going out and purchasing the gift. ]

Vaani wasn't used to being out on her own. The young yaeli always traveled in tandem with her sisters and rarely left the family property without them by her side. Today, however, was different. They were all busy with their own things and someone still needed to go to town. So, she'd gussied up all the courage in her heart and gone without them.

All she had to do was buy the things on her list. With a basket over her arm, the pudgy little yaeli meandered around the growing crowds with concern. Now, which way was-? "Oh!"

A passing stranger bumped into her, effectively knocking Vaani off her balance and pushing her down onto the street.

"Watch your step!" The gruff old man chastised her before grumbling to himself and moving on.

"But I..." Oh what was the use?

[1/10]

When she was a youngling, the concept of willingly entering an earthling settlement had seemed ridiculous. She was an Aishan, always would be, and whatever affiliation her father had to that world was cut the moment he threw his lot in with an Aishan wife. ... However, as the years passed, Rawiri had come to recognize how... small such a closed off world could be. Perhaps that was fine, acceptable even, for others who fit in. But that had never really been an option. Her sister found an outlet in her collections - Rawiri found hers in acting as a bridge, of sorts, between her two bloodlines.

Namely, she used her mixed heritage to her advantage and walked into the town as if she belonged there. For as haughty as her sisters could be, many of them still enjoyed the benefits of foreign goods, clothes, medicines... but would never deign to get them themselves.

That was how she found herself in a Yaeli market, the handle of a basket tucked against her elbow as she browsed the wares. It was how, in this case, she came to be looking through a stand just feet away from a young Yaeli girl, knocked aside by an older man.

Even if she hadn't sensed it with her antennae, she'd have heard the way he shouted, and the meek objection that quickly cut off. Rawiri followed the man with cool grey eyes, pressing her glasses up her nose with an unimpressed, disdainful sniff, adjusting her hold on the basket as she stepped into the street and extended a hand to the girl to help her up.

"Where is he off to in such a hurry? There's nothing that interesting here, is there?"

Vaani was slow to pick herself back up, mostly out of an innate fear that he would recognize her crystals and return. In past experiences if she just stayed down for a while they would walk on....So to have someone stop actually gave her more anxiety than the act itself.

But it wasn't the man who came back or even a local yaeli. When Vaani turned her gaze to the hand extended her way her eyes traveled upward...and kept going until she saw the telltale features of an Elarian. For a moment her heart stilled, but...where was the pink? And her eyes...they weren't green.

Cautiously, Vaani took the offered hand and got to her feet. "I've heard it said that when you reach a certain age you just hurt for no reason so maybe he's in pain?" The teenager brushed some dirt off her hips. When she looked back to the other girl, the notably taller stranger, her eyes went straight back to her face. For a moment she simply looked, absorbing the moment before finally offering an awkward smile. "Sorry, that was rude of me; your markings are very lovely and unique and I just...didn't know how to properly say it without sounding....well, rude."

It wasn't unusual for people to stare, especially people she'd never met before. Rawiri withdrew her hand once the girl was up, but lingered for a moment, not quite turning away. For one, the indictment of his health made her smile, coy and sly as if they were gossiping or sharing some morbid secret together. And besides... why not let the girl look? Other hybrids disliked the staring, but Rawiri only minded when their lips curled in disgust, having come to some conclusion that she was strange, or unappealing.

The aishan hybrid was exceedingly patient, full lips quirking into a satisfied smile, as if she was subtly preening under the attention. It was obvious enough that the girl had been staring, and quite possible that her compliments were a weak attempt to make up for it - but Rawiri would take the compliments, wholeheartedly. "You really know how to win a girl over." She purred back, her tone and expression friendly but teasing.

She adjusted her basket again to hold it more comfortably, pushing her dreads back from her face. "Is it common for males to push people around here?" After all, no one else in the busy marketplace had spared the girl more than a sidelong glance when she fell.

To Vaani she was beautiful. Terrifying in the implications of her birth, but in a way that drew the eye to her. Almost like a plant that could make you sick if you ate it, but whose petals were the richest, most vibrant of colors. The yaeli's cheeks burned and she ducked her eyes, "Just an observation." Her gaze swept back to the old man's back before making a light 'hmm'. There was a droop to her shoulders then and an inevitability that removed whatever steel may have been in her spine.

"Just for us. My sisters and I are cursed so...it's best if you go now. I'm just here for a little shopping so I'll be out of the way soon."

Cursed? Rawiri's eyebrows went up and her head angled, intrigued by the answer. "I'm certain there are those that say similar things about my sister and I." She answered, flippantly, although her eyes swept over the girl as if trying to determine what, exactly, made this girl 'cursed'.

Instead of asking, Rawiri reached to hook her elbow against the other girl's, leading her away from where she'd, previously, been sprawled out on the ground. "Very well. I shall have to accompany you on your shopping trip until you're finished. Are you, also, looking for gifts? For your sisters, perhaps?"

They probably do. If her sister looked anywhere near as unique as she did then Vaani could only imagine the things that were said about them. In her travels into the city she'd seen a scarce few Aishan hybrids, all travelers, that were passing through, but never Elarian born.

"Oh!" Vaani squeaked and found herself being tugged away. She had to struggle at first to find her footing since she was shorter than the other girl, but after a little skip - run she was able to find her stride. "Ah, y-yes. Usually we travel together so shopping for them can be hard."

What sort of luck did she have, to find someone that was also shopping for a sister and was so kind as to help out? "What sort of things does your sister like?"

"Everything." Rawiri responded. But rather than sounding flippant about it, she sounded miserable. You would think that with a sister who enjoyed collecting things it would be easy to find a gift, but - that was just it! Every time, Rawiri worried that whatever she found would be something her sister already had in one of her little piles somewhere... or that, maybe, Kahakura wouldn't like it as much if she hadn't found it for herself.

"She has everything she could ever want, so what else could I give her? I could look at a hundred things, and I'm certain she'd like them all well enough, but not any more than anything else she has. Am I wrong for wanting her to think what I give her is special?" Rawiri pouted, but looked down at her new companion, reminding herself that it was often polite to involve the other person in conversation.

It was easy to just want to keep talking about herself. "Have you found anything yet? How many sisters do you have to shop for?"

She hadn't even introduced herself but Rawiri didn't see a reason to, not if this meeting was a one off occasion, right?

Vaani couldn't help the laugh that slipped out, but rather than sound mocking it was entirely sympathetic. She even had the grace to flush afterward and pat the other girl's arm. "What about something sentimental? Something that's only special to the two of you?" The struggle of finding that perfect thing was certainly one she could understand, but Vaani had a couple of tricks around it. With four sisters you had to get creative!

"I have four sisters so I understand a little of what you're going through. I don't have much so I can't buy them anything grand, but I like to keep things personal. Take Varshana, for instance; this past summer an Oban tradesman came through with beautiful, thorny flowers, but she couldn't afford one. So, I'm going to see if I can't get a few seeds for her. They won't mean much now, but come summer it should bloom."

It had been a little moment, something that only the two of them had been privy too, but that meant more than anything else, right?

The earthling defied expectation, because Rawiri had her pegged as the sort of mousy thing that would shiver and shake and hmm and haw her way through this interaction. Instead, almost as soon as they were moving the girl thawed out, enough so that she laughed and even felt brave enough to pat her arm! Rawiri smiled, pleased at how quickly the girl warmed up to her, nodding along with her explanation.

"She sounds like a peculiar, special girl to like thorny flowers in the first place. It's a sweet gift, I'm sure she'll enjoy it." Nodding to herself, Rawiri lifted her gaze to look around, trying to spot anyone selling flowers - and, finding one, she ushered her new companion towards it, pondering her words.

"A bag? Perhaps, to hold all her other special things in... or books. She likes to learn, she is so much sharper than I am..."

"Well. when you're a quint you're already od-" Vaani caught herself and instantly felt herself shrink a little. She hadn't meant to add that part. Everything pertaining to her curse was supposed to stay secret, as if this entire meeting would blow apart if one word was uttered. "I-I-I'm sorry, I should have said..."

For a moment she was content enough just to walk along to the flower seller and occasionally steal glances up at the taller girl. Was she mad? Or scared or...?

"I think perhaps...a journal might be nice with a design in the cover...maybe like your markings? That way she can write down what she knows and think of you while she does it. Or a bag, that sounds nice too"

A... quint? Rawiri had to puzzle over the word for a moment before she recognized what it meant. She'd never heard of an Aishan bloom holding so many flowers, but she expected that so many daughters of Aisha would be considered a blessing. However, from what horror stories she'd been told by her grandmother about earthling women and how they procreated (and, therefore, why she shouldn't do it herself), so she could understand why it'd be seen as the opposite.

Not that she understood 'pregnancy' in any meaningful way - only that blooms grew inside of earthling flesh, only to burst out when ripe. Did they chew their way out from the inside? Or did they--

The thoughts were morbid, and Rawiri wanted, desperately, to ask more - but the girl blanched and quickly changed the subject, and the Elarian hybrid could only purse her lips and shoot her thoughtful glances as they walked, holding her questions reluctantly under her tongue.

The journal suggestion sounded glorious - but she had a feeling her sister might, more than likely, feel it was an expression of Rawiri's vanity rather than a fond reminder of her sister.

"Perhaps so, perhaps not." She said, at length, looking over the flowery goods thoughtfully. Maybe, like Vaani's sister, she could get a sack of seeds that Kahukura might enjoy instead. "Once you've found your thorny seeds, we'll have to keep looking for... your other three sisters, yes?"

Oh, she'd messed things up, hadn't she? If she were any kind of person at all she would just turn back and try again another day! Better she should leave now than bother the hybrid any more than she already had! Still...she wasn't exactly being chased off and it was...honestly a little nice just to talk. She kept stealing glances at Rawiri, waiting for the inevitable and when it didn't come she was pleasantly confused.

"Yes, three more. They should be easier to shop for." When they came to the vendor it took Vaani a little while to find exactly what she was looking for, but when she did she motioned Rawiri closer. A picture of what the seeds would sprout into had been sketched on a piece of paper with kohl and dabbled on with a thin, cheap paint. "I think they're kind of pretty, don't you?"

Good, only ONE sister wanted rare seeds apparently. Rawiri opted to ignore any sidelong looks, just as Vaani was with her own inquisitive glances and, together, the two quietly agreed to Not Discuss It.

Or, so Rawiri assumed. She was growing disinterested in the plants, although she didn't consider leaving the girl to her own devices, and was pleasantly surprised when the girl motioned for her attention. The artistic rendition was enough to pique her interest again, and once Vaani had plucked out her own set of seeds, Rawiri found herself doing so as well. Not as a gift, in this case, but because she was curious if she could get the things to grow at the soil back home herself.

"Yes, very lovely." She agreed, dropping a handful of coins into the expectant merchant's hands - enough for her own purchase, and for Vaani's.

Why not endear herself just a bit more? Maybe, then, they could meet up again the next time and she could sate her curiosity without making the girl blanch or wince away from her.

"We'll have to stay in touch, so you can tell me if your sister's turned out as pretty as mine. And I still need your help picking out a bag, as well, don't I?"
