With the changing of the seasons Yngvara knew life was about to change once more. While this wouldn’t be the last time, she visited her Aunt and Uncle travel during the harsher winter months was generally kept to a minimum. It was safer that way, especially since she and her brother were still so small. At least that’s what her mother said. It wouldn’t stop them from coming to see her if they wanted, but for now this might very well be the last time she got away from home before the winter hit.

There was already a fine layer of snow on the ground as it was. Just enough to come to the top of the seven-year old’s boots as she padded around the yard. Her brother was off doing something fun with Auntie Riya and Yngvara could have gone with them if she hadn’t been so sick last night. Something she’d eaten hadn’t settled well with her, so she’d had to stay back this morning to rest up. She felt fine now though which made staying inside where it was warm all the harder.

Ergon had taken the day off from work to go out with Riya and the children. While he was less than enthusiastic about seeing the hybrid family members, it was easier when Riya was there to take all of their attention. Now though.. he was stuck home keeping an eye on the girl while Riya went off with the oldest. It had been alright when she'd been stuck in bed, but now she was feeling better and walking around outside. Now he was supposed to actually pay attention to her! Seven was old enough for her to take care of herself, right?

He sat inside where he could be comfortable with a book in the family room inside and still watch the youngling play outside through the front window. He'd thought that he might be used to it by now.. but seeing those blended features and knowing they were part of his blood was still unnerving.

On a more basic level, he was just uncertain of feeding her anything now! Would she want some soup after playing outside? Cocoa? What if she got sick again?

[Yngvara 2]

Yngvara furrowed her brow and looked out over the horizon with a pout. Somewhere in the mass of thick trees her brother was learning all kinds of fun things and she was stuck here…with her Uncle. Looking back toward the house, the youngling felt her ears droop a little. Her Aunt was great; she loved to come out and play with them. She was always so happy to see them, constantly said how much she loved them and made every visit an adventure. Uncle Ergon…wasn’t the same. She tried to stay out of his way as much as she could which was why she’d opted to go outside by herself instead of bothering him.

Maybe she could find them? She knew her way around just fine and her parents had taught her well enough to track! Gussying up her coat Yngvara looked back behind her one more time before heading off into the woods.

After a while, Ergon realized he had been reading the same line multiple times. He sighed and closed the book. Maybe some very simple broth soup would be okay? He glanced out the window, set the book down, and stood to head for the kitchen.

After two steps, his brow knit and he stepped over to the window again. With an irked groan, he went to the front door and stuck his head out. "Yngvara, you're supposed to stay in the front," he called out, assuming she had simply gone to the side or around the back of the house. When no answer came, he begrudgingly pulled on his boots and stepped out. "Hey, come back to the front," he called as he headed to one side. The snow was lacking in little boot prints though. Maybe the other side? He went to the main cluster of prints to track the girl, heart sinking when the last pair of prints vanished into the woods.

Riya was going to kill him if the girl got lost.

She was little though, so she couldn't have gone far, right? He grumbled to himself as he went back inside to grab his coat.

[Yngvara 3]

Yngvara wasn’t so far off that she couldn’t hear her Uncle’s voice calling out. She couldn’t make out the words, but the timbre of his voice was enough to make her look back. Did it stop her? Not in the least. Still, Yngvara had hoped that she would have found them before he found her and the unease made her little feet pick up the pace.

She was picking through a little patch of trees, nothing nearly as grand as the mountains from her mother’s stories, but to her it may as well have been. Just getting over a fallen log was a hassle! She’d had to grab onto one side and slide her belly across it before dropping onto the ground just to cross! Did that mean the entire front of her outfit was covered in muck? Yep. Again, did she care? Not at all!

At the very least it was leaving a very obvious trail for her Uncle’s sake.

He was grateful that the weather wasn't too active at the moment. The last thing he needed was anything to mask the steps he was tracking. It could turn in a moment though, so he had to follow quickly. It had been a while since Ergon had done any real tracking.. but, thankfully, this track was rather easy to follow. It wasn't long before he saw the fluffy coat struggling over a log in the distance.

He opened his mouth to call out, but paused. What was she doing out here anyway? Just playing? Trying to go home? Her confidence in heading off on her own was admirable... That must have been the iceling half of her. It was almost cute. That, and... well, he'd never really taken the time to just watch either of the children. At this age, he'd been too busy helping with his mother to go play in the woods.

Despite his initial intent to grab and go, he hung back to watch Yngvara navigate the woods with interest.

[Yngvara 4]

While this wasn't the first time the little halfling had wandered into the woods on her own it was the first time she'd been this far out of sight. Back home she knew familiar paths, had been able to memorize little grooves in the trees the Ild'vann had left behind, and could find her way back if she got lost. Here? She wouldn't have a clue, but that didn't stop her. Right now Yngvara wasn't nearly cold enough to worry.

She padded carefully around a rather thick bramble patch and pulled up short when she came across a little brook. It wasn't nearly deep enough for real worry, but a voice in the back of her mind kept saying 'walk through water and you'll freeze!'. So, the little one furrowed her brow and looked left, right, then left again for an alternative route. How was she supposed to find Aunt Riya now?!

Oh but there was a tree close by with a low branch. If she could climb up there then maybe she could just jump! She'd seen her parents do similar stunts so why wouldn't she be able to? The fact that her Uncle's voice had faded into nothingness didn't strike up any worry; if anything it had passed through her mind completely.

All she had to do was get to the top of the tree...So, Yngvara started the climb up. She wasn't strong enough to make it easy, but she was determined. Even if she'd barely gotten a few inches off the ground...

It was surprisingly interesting to watch the youngling exploring. With a little imagination, he could see himself following his own curious child around. Would they be outdoor explorers like this, or prefer the indoors? There had been a time when he and his twin had the whole world at their feet, able to do anything and everything! ..He couldn't remember those days though.

Watching Yngvara reach a new obstacle, he waited until she decided to climb the tree to step forward. "Where are you heading on your own?"

[Yngvara 5]

With a startled yelp Yngvara lost all of her progress and fell. Thankfully she hadn't managed to get high enough to hurt herself, but landing on her back did sting. When she opened her eyes she looked up, then back at a weird angle to see her Uncle. The little one's silver gaze widened considerably and she scrambled to sit upright.

"...nowhere." She mumbled, looking everywhere except in his general vicinity. Was he mad? How mad was he? She thought she was safe!

The youngling's short fall earned a wince, but it didn't seem enough to earn outright concern. She seemed more frustrated at getting caught than anything else. "Nowhere?" he repeated with a doubting c**k of his brow. "You must have had something in mind when you left the yard. You know Aunt Riya would not like you wandering off on your own. You could have gotten lost or hurt. Then what would you have done?" He raised his hand to beckon her closer. "Come on, we should get back to the house."

[Yngvara 6]

"...No." The little girl looked up at her Uncle with a childish stubbornness in her eyes. Aunt Riya might not have liked the idea of her going off on her own, but she would have only been mad for a little while. She'd say some things that hurt, maybe punish her a little, but then Yngvara would have what she wanted in the end.

"Not going." She DID have somewhere in mind and that didn't include him! So, with a firm set to her jaw, Yngvara turned away from Ergon and started back into the woods, keen on finding ANOTHER way across the brook.

Ergon was admittedly shocked by the denial. No? As simple as that? "Excuse you? That is not how this works. I said come along, and that's what you do." He knew there was a certain way to talk to kids, but Riya was better with them than he was. She was usually there to back him up. Right now though, he was on his own and the girl was apparently in a stubborn mood. Maybe softer? "I'm sure there's some cocoa I can heat up for you..."

[Yngvara 7]

Yngvara spared a glance his way before scrunching her nose and continuing on. She knew he must not LIKE her, but that didn't mean that she feared or even respected her Uncle. He just so happened to share a space with someone she did listen to. Instead, she moved around a thick tree and looked around for signs she thought would lead her to her family. Obvious things like broken limbs, footprints and grooves cut into trees. Things her Aunt wasn't likely to leave behind on a quick jaunt outside of her home, but it wasn't like the child would know that. When he talked about cocoa she gave him a solid look, boring her silver gaze into him. Cocoa DID sound nice, though.... "Are you SURE?"

At first, Ergon could feel his ears beginning to burn. He wasn't about to get into a shouting match with a youngling, but what else was he supposed to do? Just pick her up and carry her back? Lock her in the house until Riya got back? He would never hear the end of it. He ran his hand through his hair with frustration until that firm little voice raised again. Was.. that working? "I am very sure," he confirmed with a nod. "We could whip some cream to put on top of it, too. Have you whipped cream for yourself before?"

[Yngvara 8]

Yngvara scrunched her nose and thought on it. She didn’t want to go back with him, that much was certain just by the way she stood with her hands on her hips and a firm set to her little jaw. Cocoa sounded nice though, especially with some whipped cream on top of it. “You’ll lock the door.” Once he had her in his clutches he wouldn’t let go! Why else would Ergon have left his home in the first place if it wasn’t to drag her back? “You just want me to go so we both won’t be in trouble. Just me.”
