Aeleas had procured a pumpkin. It was round and orange and rather delightful. Actually she had gotten two, and as she had seen books and pictures with the pumpkins all cut up with faces on them...obviously this was a great way to...learn more.
Now there was the simple issue of finding someone to do it with. Someone to cut into the pumpkins with. Sadly, Fae-Fae wasn’t in her room, so Aeleas went to the next best one, knocking on Neryn’s room rapidly.
“Hello! Hello Neryn! I want to cut pumpkins with you! It is a human tradition that we should try! They are very round! Very orange! It should be a worthwhile activity!”
Chewing on her lip, the Cadet lit up. “Think of it as an enjoyable training exercise! We will have to get technical with our blades to cut the flesh of this vegetable into pleasing shapes and friendly gazes!”
Hopefully that would get the other Cadet’s attention and would make them want to hang out with her and do this thing. If not…
...Well. Aeleas was sure she could find someone. Hopefully.

Neryn opened the door to start at Aeleas, their normal sort of disgruntled expression on their face, and raised a brow. "... Cut pumpkins? Humans do this for... fun?" they said, all at once curious to see this activity in action and disgusted that anyone would suggest her doing a 'human' activity. They were there for a mission not to fool around and do human things. After all, they weren't humans. Why should they do human activities?
Neryn's mouth flattened into a line, but the cadet let out a sigh and grabbed their jacket from the hook by the door and collected their blades. It was hard to deny Aeleas' excitement about the whole thing. Neryn was curious about this, and perhaps something good would come out of it. Maybe. At least it would pass the time.
She really was grasping for straws here, as the human saying went. Neryn, bean, it's okay to be curious about human things, you don't have to be so rigid all the time.
"... Fine I will cut pumpkins with you. I do not understand why humans do this, but I am willing to give it a go."

Aeleas gave a noise of pure delight and nodded. “Oh, I hope that you will not regret it! I for sure will not! I hope that we can find the most pleasing of expressions! Though, from what I have learned, some humans enjoy making the pumpkins...ah. I believe the word is…” She hesitated, wrinkling her nose as she handed Neryn the extra pumpkin and began to walk outside. (The literature had said this could be rather messy.)
“Spoopy? I believe that was the word I read. I am still not completely sure of the definition, but I hope that you and I will make pleasingly spoopy pumpkin cuts.”
Aeleas was practically bouncing with her excitement, and when she found a good, flat spot she sat, plunging her dagger into the top of the pumpkin and beginning to cut a circle, as she had seen in the pictures. “It did not look difficult, and for Cadets of the Vanguard, I am sure this will be utterly simple. The humans will be astounded.”

"Aeleas... I am quite sure that is not a word, in any of the human lexicons or our own," they said, taking the large orange vegetable called a pumpkin in their hands and following the other Cadet to a flat spot of the hill. Neryn eyed the way Aeleas cut into the pumpkin around the top, and followed suit.
It was easy to cut, interesting. They gripped the stem and pulled the round piece of pumpkin head out of the rest of it.
"What is... Aeleas, these things are filled with... seeds? Please hold on, I must take notes and research the database for this..." they said, picking up their data pad and searching for 'pumpkin.'
Interesting...
"The information states we need to scoop the seeds out before we can proceed... do you have a tool for that?" If not, they supposed they could use their hands but it just seemed... unhygenic. Especially with an Earth plant.

Ah…a tool to remove the innards of the pumpkin…yes…this. Aeleas gazed at the orange goop with some distaste and frowned slightly. “...I have no tools for it, no. I…suppose we may use our hands…but.” She rubbed the back of her neck and frowned deeply now, brows furrowing. “...If you desired it, I could go and find something to remove the innards…but I…”
Drawing in a breath, the cadet pushed her sleeve up almost to her elbow and reached into the vegetable, giving a grimace as her fingers made contact with the slimy, cold guts of the pumpkin. “...I…I see no…ah. No reason as to why…”
She broke off, scooping out a handful of the stuff and working very hard not to gag. “...This…is revolting…” No matter how brave she was trying to be. No matter how she wanted Neryn to enjoy this activity…right now she wasn’t sure that she enjoyed it. “...It will be pleasant…It looks so pleasant when the shapes and faces are cut out!”

Neryn watched Aeleas sink her hand into the pumpkin with all the attention one would give to a... what was the term again.... ah yes, 'trainwreck' but with more science as they furiously scribbled notes onto the datapad. There was clear disgust on Aeleas face (they noted this, as well as the light 'squelching' noise as she grabbed the seeds inside) and looked almost a shade of teal as she brought the slimy monstrousity out of the pumpkin.
Bile did back up in Neryn's throat at the sight of the guts. They coughed and swallowed thickly at the mass of weirdly connected seeds that sort... oozed out of Aeleas' fingers. What could only be described as a 'chunk' of pumpkin seed and viscera fell from the handful and plopped back into the pumpkin.
Neryn did audible gag that time.
"By Velencia that is... horrifying as it is... revolting... why do humans like this?!" they gasped, suddenly staring at their pumpkin like it's inners were going to leap out at them. At least they did not smell anything except for fresh. There was no real comparable smell that they were natively aware of, so they guessed it smelled like... pumpkin. Neryn made a note to look this up later.
"Perhaps we should find some... gloves. Or a scoop of some sort," they said, truly hoping the pumpkins would look very pleasing when they were done.

“I…I do not know. I…I would very much like to cleanse this off of my…my hands…I…” Perhaps Aeleas had severely miscalculated…but the idea of a scoop…or gloves…or both sounded so wonderful. “This…I had assumed it would be much more simple. If the small undeveloped humans can do it, where is the challenge I just.”
She drew in a breath and plunged her hand back into the pumpkin, frantically trying to scrape the sides and bottom free of the viscera. Gagging again, Aeleas threw the large wad of orange strings and seeds as far away from herself as she could and then turned the pumpkin upside down, hoping that shaking it would assist in the removal.
“...I…I do believe that I may be ill, Neryn. I am not sure that…I can continue with this activity. May we take a break, clean off…” She held out a slime covered hand, wrist and arm and shuddered. “And come back with tools to better assist us…?”
Either that or they could simply let the pumpkins win. She was very nearly tempted to suggest that as well.

Neryn was very sure their lunch was about to evict itself from their stomach and chucked the pumpkin from themself. Oh oh this was so horrifying. How did humans like this, how did the young humans take pleasure in this? How had they not figured out a better way?
"I believe my lunch is about to return, and I... do not think I can continue. I require a deep cleanse.... and perhaps fire," Neryn said, leaning far away from the slime covered wrist and arm that Aeleas held out.
They did evict their lunch. It was not pretty, dignified, or becoming of a cadet. It was all over their shoes. And Aeleas'.

For a long moment, Aeleas simply stood there, and finally her lower lip began to tremble and she nodded. “I…yes this. This is a very poor idea of mine…and…”
She couldn’t look at her shoes, or those of the other cadet, in fact, she didn’t even finish her words, instead jerkily walking back to get clean. To get a new uniform and to not be so…utterly revolting.
Aeleas hoped that Neryn would be okay though, if they weren’t…they had projected their lunch onto her shoes…and she could stand to be at least a little unhappy with them for that…but the pumpkins had been her bad idea and she would not forget this for a long, long time.
Forever, most likely.a-disgruntled-dragon She just said nope I'm out! Fin! Ilu
