The textbooks that Kurma had dropped off for her were beautiful.

There were color photographs of all sorts or organisms printed on the glossy paper, but that was only the beginning. There were labeled diagrams, with captions. There were indexes organized in an alphabetical manner at the end, and appendixes, and references to the work of other scholars.

There were footnotes.

It was more scholarly and organized than anything she’d seen on Earth so far, and it brought her back to nights of studying on Velencya.

The only problem was the text itself.

From what she could tell, it was quite scientific. These probably weren’t words that came up in casual conversation very often, and other than a few contractions, her translator had no idea at all what to make of them.

She was flipping through the pages just outside the dome when she spotted Caedus nearby. She knew that he’d been on Earth before. It was possible he knew it was possible that he’d be able to make more sense of this type of language than the translator could.

He was their leader, though. Important, and Naeria spent a full three minutes watching him before saying, softly, “Sir?”

Caedus was not oblivious to the studious Cadet prior to her speaking to him, but he had learned to give them space and not interrupt them. He was polite and courteous and liked to check up on them when he could, but she seemed busy so he didn’t bother her.

It was a little windy today, and he was taking some time outside the dome to just appreciate the weather. He could smell the season on the air, and it was something that filled him with nostalgia and just the slightest bit of dread.

He remembered cold winters, and lonely nights wandering in the snowy forests.

He didn’t have time to drift into any worrisome thoughts; he turned to Naeria when she spoke to him. “Naeria,” he greeted, because he had worked very hard to learn all of their names. “Hello. Are you taking a break from your studies? You looked like you were enjoying your books, I did not want to disturb you.”

"Not a break, sir," said Naeria quickly. While she wasn't quite as concerned about work ethic and the appearance of work ethic as some of the others were, but she did not want their king to think that she was stopping her research when she wasn't. Her eyes flicked downwards just at the thought of it. "I was going to ask for help, if you are available."

The wind picked up for a few seconds and tried to flip the pages of Naeria's heavy textbook. She scrabbled to grab it and to hold it open to a specific spread, one on mycelium. A picture in the top corner showed a web of white threads growing across soil, while one on the other page showed a scientist who seemed to have gotten the mycelium to grow into some kind of cube.

"My translator is struggling, and I know you learned some English during your time here," she began, but then faltered as she thought things over a little more. She already wasn't looking at Caedus, but now she drew back.

"Although. Much of it is probably technical language that doesn't directly translate. So," she stared at his shoes, "I'm sorry to bother you."

Caedus moved closer and eyed her book. “It is not a bother. I am honored. I would like to know what you have found that is so interesting,” he said, and smiled in what he hoped was a reassuring way so she knew that he was sincere.

He settled onto the ground. He was obviously entranced by the pictures even before he made his way to the words.

“Oh, this does look advanced,” he agreed. “And exciting. I think humans are very interesting. I like the pictures. Even if it is a bit unnecessary sometimes. I can read these words. I do not understand them all, but I am a little out of date with some of these things. Perhaps you can make sense of them if I read them out loud to you? If that does not work, I have some suggestions that might help you continue your studies.”

Naeria did not quite relax, but his reassurances were enough to keep her from either bolting or completely shutting down. Instead, she kept holding the book out where he could see it, flipping to the next page.

"I am deeply fascinated by these fungi," she told him, before quickly adding, "It could be very useful to Velencya."

On this page, there was a picture of a building in a city with an entire wall made of the mycelium cubes. "Does this really say it is a cutting-edge building material?" she asked, squinting at the words that popped up on the ComTech. "It seems sturdy, but not very sharp. I do not know if this is meant to be some kind of warning."

She hoped not. She hoped it was just a malfunction of her technology, since it did not make sense. She wanted so badly for these organic buildings to be a good thing.

However, she did not want to be blinded as a scientist just because she was charmed by mushrooms. "A knight I spoke to said that much of Earth's current technology has flaws such as pollution. I do not want to get overly invested in this until I understand it," said Naeria.

Caedus nodded. “That is very wise. Earth is,” he paused and considered his words carefully. “Flawed, in many ways. But it is charming as well. I think the humans are young, and they live short lives, so they push through as much as they can. They sometimes do not see the bigger picture. They only see what they can accomplish and experience in their lifetime, but they are not always able to think about the longevity of their species and their world. But I think they can learn.”

He looked at the page and added, “I think they are trying. I do not know much about fungi on a personal level, except I know that I can eat them. Some of them are better than others. But if you think they could be useful to Velencya, I believe you. If it comforts you at all, ‘cutting-edge’ is not a physical description in this instance. It is,” he pursed his lips for a few seconds as he again considered his words, “a good thing. It means it is advanced. As if it is slicing the way towards a new future. It sounds aggressive but it is not. I do not understand where it came from, but I have had this explained to me before. Unless the meaning has changed since I was last here? But I think it is consistent. It means they have made improvements and it is new and the best they have to offer.”

"I like Earth," said Naeria without hesitation, reaching down to curl her fingers around some of the strands of grass beneath them. She was not sure about the humans, yet. Caedus seemed to think highly of them, but she did not enough information on them to concur or disagree, so she kept quiet for a few more moments.

She could agree that mushrooms were a good food source, though, and she nodded when he spoke of that, a spark in her eyes. "I think they would be most useful as nutrition," she told him, and she put the confusing book down so that she could summon her ComTech screen instead, and she quickly began flipping through files. "Based on my observations, mushrooms would be particularly useful for Velencya compared to some of our existing crops because they do not require light. Instead, they grow from common waste materials that should be easy to provide for them and they are natural recyclers. I've done some preliminary calculations on how much energy we might be able to save growing them, by area."

The file she pulled up was a sheet of equations, which she looked at proudly.

"But I'm also interested in other applications." She paused, glancing back down at the picture in the book. "I am glad the mushroom houses are not actually dangerous."

Caedus’ nodded as Naeria spoke, and while he was trying to be respectful not to crowd her space he couldn’t help but lean a little closer to peer at her screen. “You have been hard at work,” he noted. It took him a moment longer to piece together what she had put together but when he had the general gist of it a smile blossomed on his face.

“I can see why Commodore Lyndin brought you along. He will be most impressed by this, I think. Earth would probably not mind if you borrowed a few mushrooms. I am sure we can find some way to repay them. Though, to be honest…”

He looked at the grass, at the trees on the horizon. “I do not think they would even know they were missing anything. I hope you will share these findings when you are finished, I would be very interested to learn. I used to be better at studying. Now, I find it a bit difficult to sit still. There is always something to distract me.”

Not always something for the better; sometimes the silence unnerved him. Sometimes an innocent sound in the distance made his hair stand up, or a shadow in the corner made his heart skip a beat. Caedus was antsy and jumpy, and if it wasn’t a potential danger distracting him, it was the song of birds, or the warmth of the sun, or a scent on the wind.

Naeria's cheeks flushed a darker shade of purple at the compliment. It had her hush again and look back at the ground, although a hint of a smile played at her lips and this time she was only quiet for a few seconds before she found the nerve to say, "I think we can just give the currency in exchange?"

She had only actually talked to the one human, but that had been enough for Naeria to recognize the human's strange obsession with collecting their money.

"And I think we can grow a stable population with just a small sample of a given species. It's why I'm trying to learn about their biology and life cycle while I'm here."

She glanced at the book one more time but couldn't bring herself to ask for translation help again, no matter how kind Caedus was being. She looked up, instead, and followed his gaze to the woods.

"Sir?" she asked, voice quiet. "If you could study something, what do you think it would be?"

While Caedus had found himself nodding to Naeria’s words, he seemed a bit surprised when she asked him what he would study.

He redirected his gaze to her and blinked a few times. “Oh. I am not certain. I think there are a lot of things that I would study. I do study,” he mused, but the things that held his interest most weren’t things that he was really able to apply to anything useful. “I like to explore. I like to find crystals and rocks. Seashells and timeless things that nature leaves behind. I have many.” He paused and placed his hand over the satchel at his side. “But I suppose that is not really studying.”

Another contemplative moment. “I would study…maybe starseeds. Maybe I would study what worlds have survived for so long. But those are difficult things to gather information for, I think.”

His lips were still pursed, deep in thought.

“...If I was not worried about Velencya, or Velenia, though? If we had a home, and everything was perfect, I think I would study peace, and healing. Not physical wounds, but the greater things. The things you cannot see, cannot touch. I want to help. I have learned some already, because Earth seems to have many resources that have been shared with me. ”

He still didn’t know if he was satisfied with his answer.

“I am sorry, this answer is all over the place. I am interested in many things. Maybe I would study a little bit of everything? Maybe I would write books,” he sighed and seemed to be deeply focused. “...Maybe stories. I like stories.”

Naeria was almost always interested in what others had to say, and to the King, she listened rapt, her owlish yellow eyes flicking from his face to the satchel that he carried to the world around them, which he, too, seemed so enthralled by.

She did not speak immediately after he finished talking, but eventually she said, "I think it's beneficial to have a wide variety of interests, sir," and she no longer seemed quite so nervous to be speaking to him.

She looked down at her precious book and ran a finger over one of the glossy photographs, but said, "I know mushrooms will not save Velencya and Velenia on their own. Even what we can learn from every plant and animal on this planet will only help so much. There will be a starseed and senshi element, likely a social element."

She traced the picture of the mycelium house with a short-cropped fingernail. "But I haven't been able to think about anything besides the biology here since we landed." She looked back up to him. "If you have a wider perspective, it makes you a good King."

“I agree,” he said after a moment. “A narrow mind only means many missed opportunities, I think. And all the better to have a team of very educated people, with knowledge on many things. I bet you are the most knowledgeable on all things mushroom-related. And I am certain you will become more knowledgeable before we leave. I do not think any one thing will restore Velenia, but I think many small things might.”

Of this, he seemed certain, and there was a fire in his eye that spoke to his conviction for the matter.

“I think that there are many things we can do, especially when we are working together. What you can learn might solve a problem we haven not yet experienced, and maybe someone else will study something that benefits your goals. I think you should continue to pursue these studies.”

He was enthusiastic about this, and might have taken her hands if it had been socially appropriate to do so. “I think you should take them as far as you can. I would like you to learn, and I would like you to teach me how we can apply your knowledge to make the worlds better. Velencya, and Velenia, and Earth, too. I bet we could help all of them.”

Naeria could not help a smile when he said that she was the most knowledgeable on mushrooms. She also could not help but to think that right now, he was sounding very much like a King.

His voice wasn't booming and commanding like Commodore Lydin's, but there was still something about what he was saying that made her want to work hard and make him proud. It was probably because he believed that she, and all the cadets, could make a difference, and maybe, more than she would have wanted to admit, it was because he was encouraging her to keep looking into these mushrooms that she had found she loved.

It was easier for her to look at Caedus than it would have been for her to look at Commodore Lyndin, and she even found the courage to ask, "Can I stay here with you while I keep reading?"

She finally picked the book back up and turned back to the page she'd left off trying to translate. "And if I find anymore phrases that are strange, um-"

She still couldn't quite make herself form the question, but her eyes were inquisitive as she looked up at him.

Caedus smiled still, encouraging and excited for her. “You are good company. I feel very relaxed around you. I think it is nice to have someone to read with, so I would like that very much. I will read, too,” he said, and reached into his subspace to pull out a book with faded pages and a faded cover. The once-gold font had faded and flaked, and he brushed his fingers over the front of the book like it was something important, something to be treasured.

“If you find anything interesting, I would like to learn of it, too. And if you find any strange phrases, we can work them out together. And then, you will be able to help others, too.”

He smiled again, when he looked from her back to his book and cracked it open. “Maybe we will be able to put our minds together to make sense of this silly language.”

There was no disdain in his voice, only fondness; Earth was strange and silly, but he was completely endeared to it. He was glad that he could share it, and glad that she had already found something she could enjoy about it, too.

Naeria looked at the worn cover of his book with interest, but she didn't ask. Not yet. He'd already given her so many answers and so much of his time, and anyway, she did need to get back to her research.

They only had a few weeks left on this planet, and Naeria had every intention of making the most of them.

She picked her own book up and brought it back into her lap. She flipped to the page she'd been working on before, and she took just a few seconds to run her fingers lovingly over t he glossy photo in the top right corner.

Then, eyes narrowed slightly in intense concentration, she silently began to read.
