Six new recruits were due in to the office for "orientation". It felt absolutely ridiculous calling it that, honestly, but in the world of files and folders, business and bullshit, that's what it was. He thumbed through the folders idly, verifying the information in each of them once more before heading down to the front desk. The folders were then passed off to the secretary -- which of the four that looked nearly identical it was he had no idea at all -- and he gestured at the notepad on the desk. "Have them sign in when they arrive, please. Then show them around the employee amenities. I'll be back to take them to the Armory... Swear to the Heavens, they'd better have the measurements right this time..."

The young woman, a perky brunette with a bit of autumn auburn in the right light and wide, green eyes made to look wider by a pair of burgundy cat-eye frames that sat balanced on her nose smiled brightly, verifying the files herself before nodding. "Got it, Boss!" She didn't seem at all dissuaded by the disgruntled noise he made as he turned away from the front desk, disappearing into the elevator after swiping his key card to head down. Her day was going far to well to be bothered by that. It was always a good day when there were new recruits!

From the outside the building was no different than any other building in this part of town. It was tall with a collection of other small buildings around it -- a campus of sorts. Not like a college, but more like a hospital with several different specialty areas all wrapped up into one umbrella. Parking was in a garage connected to the second floor of the main building by a glass-walled archway accessible only by a door that required an employee pass of some sort with a ground floor that opened to the street level. From there signs directed one where to go with ADMINISTRATION AND FRONT DESK boldly pointing to a set of carousel doors straight ahead.
The lobby was grand with high ceilings and an overall feeling of opulence that one typically only felt when walking into one of the older buildings in town -- marble floors, decorative fountains, an LED screen behind the semi-circle front desk reading Welcome to the Foundation. It was almost surreal... But, then again, what wasn't these days?
When it came to 'high end' jobs, none of that was really odd or even remotely out of place... Until one considered the time of night that those coming in were due to be meeting. For the security guard it might not be strange at all, but for the others who'd been called in for their Orientation?

"Seven thirty at night for an orientation?" King muttered to himself as he stepped out of his car in the garage and checked the time on his watch. Six minutes but if the instructions were right, he would only need five to get from his parking spot on the third floor of the garage to the front desk. "Just what did I agree to?"
Doing a quick scan of the other cars there before shrugging his leather jacket back on, King made sure his doors were locked and started following the signs to the stairs.
Signs of life were few and far between. While it did not appear to be empty, it clearly wasn't rush hour either. From what he could guess, 'newbies' must have gotten the short of the stick. He just prayed they weren't going to be here all night.
When he walked into the lobby though and looked up, King felt a bit of his doubt disappear again. This was the Foundation after all. LArge, over the top, grand entrance spoke for the level of people they should be employing as well as servicing. His father would have been proud but King had chosen not to tell him that he had been offered a position here.
Yet. He'd tell him in a time that was suitable for him.
Polished shoes clicked across the floor as he headed to the Front Desk and the woman sitting behind it.
"Good Evening." King politely offered with a flash of a smile. "I was told to come to check-in at the front desk. The name is Kingston. Believe this is right?" He added the last bit to try and sound more friendly. Rule of business: never piss off the gate keepers.

There was no reason that any of this couldn't be done over something like a zoom call, or a phone call, or a text message. Literally there were dozens of methods that didn't involve Isha being forced to leave his apartment (and darling pigs) behind, venturing out into the twilight to have a meeting about a weird job that he still wasn't sure he grasped the entirety of. What bits Isha did understand was that they valued his interest in research, more specifically the fields of study he was already in probably, and that somehow or another this was going to benefit him in the long run.
What didn't benefit him right this second was the time this meeting was taking place - who held orientations at 7:30 in the evening - and also the fact it was likely to be a group affair. Isha had specifically gone into his fields knowing they'd allow him minimal interactions with others, so hopefully if he endured whatever it was they were planning today he'd find the same offer extended here. One of the companies was a household name he knew, his mother and sisters often praised it whenever a commercial came on the television or he saw an ad in a magazine; the others were more of a mystery that his curiosity would demand he unlock more in the future, provided the information wasn't given over this evening.
Of course all his grousing on this was mostly academic since Isha was the one who filled out the application and what not. There was no point in complaining over the treatment of a job (?) he applied for himself, though certainly no one would begrudge him a few little gripes here and there, so long as they remained close to the chest. Zipping up his jacket against the brisk temperature of an approaching autumn evening, he departed from the drop off and headed towards the building. His scuffed up sneakers squeaked on the floor as he stepped inside, prompting a wince and an attempt to actually pick up his feet as he walked.
Really Isha, stop literally dragging your feet and just get this over with. The chide echoed inside his mind as he adjusted the cap on his head - it was not coming off since it was cold - and he idly dusted his pants. Hopefully whatever first impression he gave would be enough to last since he didn't want to have to keep repeating this over and over. There was already someone at reception by the time he'd made it over, but it was easy enough to ignore someone else and get down to business. "Ansari, Isha. I'm here for an appointment." Despite his rather lithe appearance, Isha had a deep and smooth voice. It never went with his face ever since he was younger, so perhaps that was why he didn't speak often.
It wasn't, but that was just enough for Isha to ride on and get away with less is more for conversations.

Gracie Soulier wasn't the sort to be too thrown off by the idea of an orientation in the late evening--certainly, it was a bit unusual, but for a doctorate student who spent most of her day studying, researching her own projects, or attempting to help undergrad students as a T.A., it was something of a godsend. Certainly, it sounded like there were opportunities ahead for her in this new job, but that didn't mean she was going to be impractical about things. Besides, an evening orientation was a small price to pay when it was tied to something that sounded very much like a launching point for a brilliant career.
The campus was certainly a nice one--promising, Gracie thought, and the lobby alone made it clear the Foundation was well-funded. (The Foundation being wealthy translated to well-funded research; never let it be said that Gracie Soulier didn't know an advantage for herself when she saw it.) Were she less confident in herself, she might be intimidated by the level of wealth and class on display, but she was prepared for this sort of environment: professionally dressed, not a hair out of place, any hint of fatigue-induced eye-bags expertly hidden beneath carefully-applied makeup. She was here for a reason, and that meant she belonged here. It really was as simple as that, when you got down to it.
Head held high and heels clacking lightly as she walked, Gracie approached the front desk. Hm, it seemed there were already a few others here; something to be filed away in case it might be useful later. She would keep an eye on them, she decided, but there was no need to do more than nod politely to both of them before approaching the secretary herself, once there was a spare moment. It was always a good idea to be polite but brief with this sort; secretaries were busy people, and the smoother things went the easier it was on everyone.
"Good evening; my name is Gracie Soulier, I believe you were expecting me?" While she waited, she took another quick look at the others already gathered here--they both seemed to be just a little younger than she was, and she was taller than both of them. (Not that unusual a thing, really; she was uncommonly tall and aware of that fact.) Other than that, she didn't see anything to be too invested in just yet. Perhaps that would change once the orientation began, but at the moment she was more interested in the secretary and getting her own affairs settled.
Sirene Naiads
She's certainly noticed King, but who has time for conversation these days?

You have been perceived, Isha, but don't worry; Gracie's not here to socialize. You're safe... For now.
Orientation. It was not the first time Harper had been summoned for something like this, though usually her employers were not so organized and serious about her employment. It was temporary, most of the work she got, despite how dedicated she could be. This was different.
This was what she had been looking for.
She had already been given her assignment, and was ready to get started. She had an overview, a tour and a little bit of shadowing under her belt, but this was it. A dedicated work place, to thrive in and defend. It was a little different to what she was used to, but she was adaptable and patient: it would not take her too long to learn the ropes. Of that she was sure. She was building from a solid starting place, after all, and the foundation was important. It would help her to build a reputation that would last, and allow her new compatriots a standard of trust and loyalty they could depend on.
This was the start of it all.
She entered quietly, though it was hard to miss her as she towered with her large arms crossed over her chest. She waited patiently for the others to be checked in, offering her own name, Harper Wallace, quietly. This was not the first time she had been here, so she had gotten herself used to the lay out of the lobby and the employee areas. She was more curious about the next step.
Not very good at being social, despite her best efforts no matter how hard she made it look like she was not trying at all, Harper opted to wait stalwartly to the side, watching the others and absorbing what she could about them at a distance. Their body language and the way they presented themselves said a lot, and she tried to get a read on people in an effort to predict their actions. And decide if they were a danger or not.
So far, no one needed to get thrown out on their face.

Almost at the last possible minute to show up and still be on time, perfectly punctual, Buffy sauntered into the reception area and beamed at the others waiting there. "Hey, y'all," he greeted with a wave of his hand, then approached the reception desk. "Jon Bufkin, present and accounted for."
Check-in taken care of, he turned to check out his fellow recruits -- at least he assumed they were also recruits, because otherwise what would they all be doing here at 7.30 at night dressed and polished like this? Buffy himself wasn't nearly as polished, though he was neat as a pin, his long pale hair tied back in a tidy ponytail instead of loose and just-got-out-of-bed messy. This was a professional gig, best to put on one's best.
"How are y'all this evening? Excited?" He didn't expect an answer as he scanned the room, assessing each of the others that were here with the practiced eye of a bartender. One fellow the picture of professional who seemed a right charmer at first glance, one who looked like he'd rather everyone else would drop off the face of the earth, a lady nearly as tall as he was who reminded him of a bouncer he knew once, another tall drink of water dressed to impress eyeing the others as if assessing them for their worth to her. Interesting collection of recruits here for orientation.
He'd been duly impressed with the poshness of the Foundation's campus and the majestic main lobby, but to Buffy, this was just another job orientation, like so many he'd been through in the last four years. Nothing to get too worked up about.

The young woman tipped her head enough to peer over the frame of her glasses, getting a good look at the young man who'd approached the desk first before thumbing through the files once more. Smiling brightly she pushed her glasses back into place with her index finger placed directly on the bridge of the frames before reaching for a plastic badge-holder to tuck an ID card into before affixing it with a metal clip. The ID card, affixed with a standard magnetic strip, would allow for access to the primary floors and some of the more basic amenities that she would be reviewing with them. In passing him the card, however, she also passed him a sticker: Hello! My name is...Spinel. "This will help the boss identify you when it comes to handing out your additional clearance badge for," she paused to ponder the words thoughtfully, the gears visibly turning in her head before she continued, just as chipper as she had been only moments ago, "after hours activities and access to some of the other unique features of The Foundation."
The next young man in line received the same type of bright smile and overly friendly attitude despite the vibes radating from him. Hello! My name is...Apatite. "Here you are, sir. Feel free to explore the lobby as you'd like. We're just waiting for a few more members of the team to arrive before we proceed."
When the third person approached she leaned back and looked up, nudging her glasses into place once more before shaking her head, then nodding so as to not make it seem as though Ms Soulier hadn't been expected. Two files already set off to the side, she thumbed through those remaining until she found her file. "Ah, yes. Here we are." There was an additional marker that was applied to her ID card; a sticker in the shape of a conical flask, filled halfway with a vibrant green color. She passed the ID card and the name sticker over with another bright smile. Hello! My name is...Lavendulan.
The next was someone she'd already met before; a pleasant guardsperson who seemed to be settling in nicely enough with the rest of the daytime crew. Evening work was a little different but she had no doubt she'd pick it up just fine as well. Waving her over. "Here. You'll need this tonight -- so the boss knows who you are when it comes to passing out your additional clearance badge." Hello! My name is...Regalite.
Standing up she reached over to gently tap Mr Buffkin on the shoulder, passing him his ID card and additional name badge. Hello! My name is...Morganite. They were waiting on one more, of course, but the clock had just ticked over to 7:30 and they did have a schedule to keep with...
The click, click, click of heels on marble sounded after the *ding* of an elevator chime from somewhere behind the staircase leading up to the 'observation' area just above the main lobby. Another young woman, looking very similar to the first saved for the distinct difference that her glasses were most definitely a striking shade of bright blue. Her hair was neatly swept back and piled atop her head, smile just as bright as her co-worker's. "You're all here for Orientation? Wonderful. You can call me Mime -- please make sure that you all have your ID badges clipped on to you at all times when you're in the building and, for tonight, please also go ahead and put that name sticker on. We're going to take a tour of the main areas here shortly, but before we venture off does anyone have any questions?"

The very tall, very muscular woman was standing rather sheepishly to the side, doing her best to look intimidating (which, really, took no effort at all) but also trying to listen for a chance to make some sort of impression on those gathered with her. These were her compatriots, after all: the people starting at the same time as her.
They could be her friends, and were most certainly her allies. This made them important, even if she did not know any of them, yet.
And she was terrible at being social. Or at least, she thought as much of her own skills in company. It was just so difficult to find things to talk about, and generally people just seemed too scared of her to really want to speak to her directly, anyway. So when she heard Buffy speak, her surprising gentle eyes flashed his way.
She considered her answer, wanting to say something to truly convey just how excited she was: she knew this was the first step in to something life changing, even if she did not fully understand why. She wanted the others to feel so, too, and she really did want to engage them and learn about each of them. She just had to figure out the best words to break the ice, something pithy and charming, to sum up just how important and exciting this new opportunity really was.
"Mhm," she intoned softly in response to his question, though it was debatable if it even qualified as audible.
Her attention shifted, though, as someone in authority, as anyone who had been at this place longer than she had would immediately be considered, addressed the small group.
Harper accepted what she was offered thoughtfully, looking at the nametag and tilting her head to the side slightly in wonder. She did not feel like she was a particularly regal sort, but she put the name tag on without question. She always did as she was told: and she most certainly wanted to make a good impression now. She had already noted how odd it was that some of the employees looked so very familiar to each other, but had also already accepted it for what it was and decided not to worry about it.
She did not have any questions just yet, standing at attention and watching the others with curious interest. Sometimes she found it was just easier to let others talk, as they often brought up things she had not even considered.

Even though the tall, powerfully-built woman's response to his general query of excitement was only a soft murmur of acknowledgement, that was enough for Buffy. He turned his bright grin in her direction, purple eyes alert and twinkling. "I swear," he drawled, tilting his head, "I swear I must know you from someplace. You look so familiar to me, like I've seen you standing justlikethat at a club or something." Then he shook his head and chuckled. "I'm so sorry, I just sometimes say the first thing that comes to mind. I hope I didn't embarass you." Sticking out his hand, he smiled warmly. "Everyone calls me--"
Just then he remembered the name badge and ID card. "Guess everyone'll be calling me Morganite," he grinned wryly. "Morganite... wonder what that stuff is?"
An elevator dinged somewhere, and a woman who looked a whole lot like the desk clerk greeted everyone -- apparently this Mime was going to be running the show tonight. "No questions from me," Buffy shook his head as he affixed the name tag to the front of his blazer and clipped the ID badge to the hem. "I'm ready and rarin' to go."
Glancing back at his new friend, he noticed her name tag. "Regalite? Pleased to make your acquaintance," he beamed.

The heck was this? A Joke?
King took the card and sticker, eying the piece with a look on his face that said she expected some sort of answer explaining the use of names. Receiving none, and finding that everyone seemed to have a sort of 'code name' themselves, he let it pass. This wasn't the first time he had to go by a name other than his own. In public, he was one person but when he ended up on a computer, well, he went by many names then.
"Interesting." He muttered, watching what could have been a clone of the woman behind the counter address them moments later. His eyes flickered back and forth then scanned the others as he clipped the badge to his belt loops and put the sticker on. Spinel hm?
The man going by Morganite made him look to the side as he mentally checked the box that if they ended up working together, he would run his mouth.
"Well Ms. Mime" He offered the woman a smile. "I believe we are in your hands this evening then."

Isha took the badge with a nod, the sticker with a nod, and the absolute loudness of the people around him with a nod. Moving away from the group, he opted to keep to himself in a corner and interact as little as needed, provided none of them directly moved to speak to him. Isha may have been standoffish and had perfected the do not approach vibe, but he wasn't outright rude if the situation didn't call for it. These people were (probably) going to be his coworkers in some way or another, so keeping everything civil was the absolute bare minimum required. Plus it seemed as though some folks would be content to keep the conversation small and not pull others in pointlessly, so Isha approved of that.
The name tag - Apatite - was placed neatly on his jacket and in such a way he could yank it off when he left without it snagging and leaving behind residue. It was funny how close Apatite sounded to apathy, if he wasn't paying attention to sounds really and said it quickly, which meant....it didn't sound well at all, so thank goodness he kept thoughts like that to himself as he waited for the next step.
Thankfully he didn't need to wait long, as someone calling themselves Mime appeared and mentioned the group would start soon so long as no one had any questions. Carefully clipping his badge on, Isha willed the folks around him to keep their mouths shut so they could just get on with it all. A few others seemed to agree as they said their bit, and Isha nodded to show he followed the same thoughts.
Or something like that.

Delighted that there didn't seem to be any questions amongst the group, at least for now, the young woman who'd identified herself as 'Mime' turned to begin their tour, motioning for the group of five to follow along after her. She started in a very professional manner, speaking as one practiced in being a tour guide might -- whatever it was that she had been recruited for it likely had something to do with personality and her ability to retain mundane information that most would gloss over with a side of 'yes, get on with it already'. "A strong Organization needs a strong Foundation. It's probably not the first time you've heard that during the process that brought each and every one of you here today and it most likely won't be the last. It is, of course, the motto on which the Foundation was formed!"
She had lead them towards the staircase leading up to the second level, pausing to turn and face them after making her way up the first two. The staircase itself made a fine backdrop for the rest of her introductory speech. "The Foundation is a Network of partnerships and enterprises that have, at their heart, dedicated themselves to preserving History while pressing towards the Future. Each one of you has been brought on to aide with an aspect of that... Research and Development," she made a gesture towards Apatite and Lavendulen, "Communications, advancement and acquisitions," a nod towards Spinel and Morganite, "and Security." Last, but certainly not least, she used her hand to make a gesture towards Regalite. "These things are generally handled by the specific corporations that are part of the Foundation -- things that will generally be reviewed on an individual level as you make your way through your placement here. What we've brought you in to discuss this evening will start with some of that, of course, but what we're really here to discuss is the Organization side of things."
Without giving much of an opportunity for discussion or additional questioning she turned to continue up the stairs until she reached the top. "While here it is up to you how much of your personal information you share with anyone who is not in... Well, for now we'll just call it upper management. We respect the privacy of the individuals employed by us and we understand entirely the need to keep work and home separate, which is why we encourage each and every one of our employees to do so as well. Your ID badges will only have your first name. Your, well, it was probably called a clearance badge downstairs -- that will be linked to the name on your stickers. Any work done after hours will require the use of that designation." Smiling brightly she looked to each of then once more before continuing on.
"This floor consists of all of the basic employee amenities and common areas -- Fitness center, cafeteria, lounge and business center." She proceeded to give them a tour of each area, starting with the business center as it was the smallest and working her way back around to the fitness center which she spent a little bit more time on. "Of course, this is just the basics -- simple work out equipment for those who are looking to get in a stretch, run or cycle between meetings. It..."
Whatever she was going to say next was interrupted by a small chime and she immediately reached down to draw a communication device out of her pocket, flipping it open to peruse the source of the notification. "It seems like the Boss is ready for us so we'll be heading down to the Armory to pick up uniforms, clearance badges and company communication devices." She waved hers for an example before clapping it closed, heading back towards the staircase so the group could make their way downstairs to the elevator she'd arrived in. "I thought we'd have a bit more time to review the basics, but... Any questions while we're on our way down?"

Fancy.
King's eyes roamed the stairway and the main 'room' they seem to be in for Mime's clearly well rehearsed welcome speech. He had to admit that he was impressed with her timing and placement to give off the most presence to her words.
He sat back, listening for a moment until he saw that she nodded towards him and...Oh brother.
With a mental sigh, his eyes flickered over to one that seemed to go by Morganite. If they were brought in for the same thing, that meant they might as well get to know each other. Maybe his mouth could be of use? But this was not the moment to find out as Mime continued on once more.
"I have one." King offered, slightly gesturing with his hand to draw her eyes towards him. "And forgive me if I missed this in the initial process but these designations," He offered, motioning towards the sticker on his own shirt as well as those around them. "I understand they are for privacy but what are they based on? Some unusual items it sounds like."

Security, yes. Even now, the newly nicknamed Regalite was walking behind the others, stature tall and rigid, eyes moving to keep an eye on the recruits, her fellows and thus worthy of her protection, as well as the area around them. It was very secure and quiet, of course, but the grand design and high class authority that dripped from the place was not enough to put the ever vigilant Harper at ease.
At the very least, if anyone even stumbled on a step, Harper would be there to catch them. Her reflexes were almost prickling, even if she could not place the source of the energy. She had not been excited, not like this, in so long she hardly knew how to recognize it. Let alone how to respond to it besides how she responded to everything else: dutifully.
The sticker she now bore, with the new name and its growing importance, seemed like a badge of honor in some way, and she nodded her head. Regalite. It was something she would have to get used to hearing, but it was so rare for anyone to bother learning her name that she was sure she could adapt to anything.
She had certainly been called worse.
The armory? That piqued Harper's interest, her usually stoic face betraying her interest in the most severe way it was capable of: one eyebrow slightly quirking. Now that was an interesting name for a room in this building. Just how many foundations had a place like that? Somehow she doubted there was an actually smithy down there somewhere, with forges and singing hammers.
Probably?

It seemed like Isha was going to have to go through quite a lot of things in order get a job in the very limited field that was paleography. He hadn't quite expected all of this to come with the application and interview, the whole badges and names and such, but considering he was a no-name college kid with absolutely zero connections it only made sense to leap at whatever opportunities came his way.
He followed the group and listened, his attention picking up as the woman - Mime, he told himself - motioned towards an area and mentioned the word research. Were anyone to be properly looking at him, they would probably see one of the very few times in his life that Isha smiled. Or maybe he was smirking, it was hard to tell with how he acted and kept his face generally down.
At the question about questions, Isha had to bite back the obvious, annoying nag that could he maybe check out the work area now? Did he really have to get a uniform to work here? And proper company communication devices? Maybe...he should have read the fine print on all of this a bit more but really? Honestly? Not even a remote problem if he thought about it. No one had asked him to speak yet, or break into groups, so the grousing he was doing in his head could be easily dismissed as eagerness to get to work in a field that seemed like it would benefit him.
Isha was also about to say he had no questions, actually preparing himself to voice it aloud this time, when one of the larger men opened up and actually popped one off. Wh...why delay this? Couldn't he ask when they were on the elevator, rather than making them stand and wait? Granted the man did ask a rather interesting question, but was there a point to this? Did he not know the name of minerals, or was he asking why they were all given mineral names?
The first, if that was what it was, made Isha pity him. The second, if that was it, had him admittedly a little curious too. Since it looked as though some folks were going to be sorted into different job areas it would have made sense for them to all have different names, but maybe each department required something like that? Either way Isha wasn't going to open his mouth and ask, not when someone else seemed happy enough to do it for him.
