Meninx had a lot going on. Constantly. His life was a delicate balance that felt like one wrong move would send everything toppling over.
He couldn’t risk screwing up. One mistake could destroy him.
He shouldn’t be out like this. He shouldn’t be powering up to do--something. It’s not like any of this had come with a manual.
And yet, on some nights, he was so restless that it made him feel sick. He had to get out of the house. He had to burn off some energy.
He had to do something.
Even if it didn’t make sense.
Powering up was a fast way to feel free, and to pretend like he didn’t have the crushing responsibilities of his reality. The air smelled fresher in the park, and the breeze was cool and welcoming.
He hadn’t met many others, so the sensation of another page on his radar still felt strange to him--and yet, he found himself close enough to lay eyes on him before he even realized that he’d been walking towards him.
Honestly, he should have just kept walking, or turned around, but something was calling to him--and, maybe it was the familiar symbols on the other man’s outfit.
“...You’re a Mars Knight?” he asked, still just a bit away. He didn’t want to approach without saying anything but neither did he want to shout across the park.

There was no manual to this whole thing. There hadn't been the first time Thanos felt heat flood his veins and the mantle of Sparta fell on his shoulders. There hadn't been when he'd taken on a damn General of all things in the park or when he'd ended up on someone's homeworld fighting angry spirits with some very gross toes. Sparta may have been a knight for a few years now, but that didn't mean he had a manual to the entire process. Or that he really did anything except some patrols and occasional fights with the Negaverse for practice.
Don't even get him started the whole alien thing.
There was a ping on his internal radar and Sparta turned as the voice announced the other page's arrival. Sparta didn't, for what it was worth, do much when it came to his patrols but tonight he'd been using a more secluded side of the park to practice spear work without weird looks. Sparta finished the thrust movement, grinning at him.
"How'd ya know? Probably the symbols... hey.. you're a Mars Knight too! Mars Knight bros!" he said, suddenly very excited to see a fellow Mars knight. The page was colored a little differently than he was - where had that purple come from and how come Sparta got stuck with shiny gold? - but the symbols didn't lie. Man did he even... know any other Mars knights, now that he was thinking about? Maybe that lady with the dark hair...?
That could be literally anyone Sparta.
"I'm Sparta, it's a pleasure to meet another Mars Knight finally!" he said, holding out a hand for Meninx to shake. Oh this was freaking awesome.

Meninx had far less enthusiasm than Sparta, and as such was a little taken by surprise by how friendly he was. In some ways, it made him think of his brother, who always seemed so comfortable talking to people. He made it look easy.
Meninx, on the other hand, almost always seemed annoyed when meeting new people.
He’d never admit it, but it was the anxiety of a new person mixed with the fear of making a really bad first impression, and a need to impress and strive for perfection.
But, that was Jace, and he wasn’t Jace right now. He was Meninx.
So, he tried to flash a smile, even if it was a little strained.
“Yeah, pleasure. I’m Meninx, nice to meet you. I take it that you’re either new or there just aren’t a lot of Mars Knights out there? I’ve only been doing this for a while, a few months, but. You’re the first I’ve run into. Was starting to think I was all alone. Haven’t really met so many people anyway, so. Glad to meet you.”
...It was really hard not to just blurt out a bunch of questions and ask him why they were here, or why they were doing this (whatever it was), or, the most important question--why him at all?

Some people had once described Sparta as a 'golden retriever puppy': very loyal, excitable, and just a little dim in the head. He considered himself rather smart, but he wasn't always good at using said smarts. His unbridled optimism just sort of... drove him forward no matter what. Again, he'd fought a General of all people for the hell of it.
So maybe he glossed over the little strained expression inside Meninx's smile, or how he seemed a little off put by how friendly Sparta was. Maybe he chose to simply roll with it and be excited that there was another Mars knight in Destiny City. That wasn't wrong, right? That was just... how he was.
"Oh naw, I'm not new. I've been a knight, well a page anyway, for a few years now. There's just not a lot of us, I think. And you'd be surprised just how many powered individuals there are in Destiny City. There's just enough space we don't trip over each other. Well and I don't patrol a whole lot," he said with a shrug and a shift of his weight. The beast of a man leaned against his spear bokken and flashed another wide smile.
"Do you have any questions? I've not done a whole lot but I can def answer to the best of my ability!"

Meninx nodded, but seemed to be taking his time to process the answers. He was a quick thinker, there was just something a little overwhelming about the reality of all of this. It felt strange to accept that there were others like this, that this was normal.
This wasn’t just his dirty secret to hide.
He didn’t patrol but he did what he could to keep himself, and his area, safe. He felt protective over it. He had people in the city that he wanted to take care of. Although, there was a bit of dread in his heart to think that he could be this weak for years. He knew there were stronger things out there. Things worth being afraid of–things he couldn’t handle.
It felt like an unreachable task, but…
He didn’t really know how to give up, anyway.
“Why us?” he asked, because that was the most important question of all. If there were so many in the city, why did he have this power? Why not his brother, or his sister, or anyone else he knew that was just–better. More heroic, at least.

"To be honest, couldn't tell ya. Just one day I needed to fight of a monster and I sorta just... became this," he said with a shrug. Sparta didn't know why them, or why their names or why their powers. He hadn't really made it a point to go figure that sort of thing out in the last few years. Mostly because his boyfriend didn't really power up much, and he'd had to deal with school s**t that was... still on going.
"Maybe whatever chooses us sees somethin' we need or somethin' we have that benefits the whole, fighting Chaos thing. Strength or quick mind gears or agility. Or compassion. I dunno. I'm not exactly known for my... self preservation or smarts, but I'm a damn good fighter. So many that's why I look like a Spartan warrior." He shrugged again, not really phased by the whole thing. "Honestly, the only reason I'm not stronger, is I'm a lazy s**t, haha!"
His laugh rang out across the small section of the park and he grinned at Meninx. Sparta really was lazy, and most of the excuses he used for not patrolling or getting stronger were just that: excuses. But, it was almost freeing to admit he was just lazy. After that fight with that general though... he probably should do his best to get stronger.
Before he ended up fighting another one.

Meninx blinked at the honesty and thought he might die if he’d ever said anything like that, himself. He didn't have the luxury of being lazy, but he did feel bad about not having more time to spend doing this. At least, a little bit.
There was something different about choosing the family career and working yourself to death to be what your mother wanted you to be than the universe choosing you to have some magic and fight for it.
He knew which one his mother would have picked for him.
He didn’t know which one he’d have picked for himself.
He didn’t like to disappoint anyone though, so he’d just have to do them both and hope for the best.
“Maybe,” he said cautiously. “Still doesn’t make sense to me. I can’t seem to get my footing. I’m not much of a team player, but maybe we’d have better luck figuring things out if we were working together on it.”
He felt like a kid in kindergarten trying to figure out how to make friends, and it was obvious that he probably wasn’t very good at it. He was too brisk, to bristly. Even now he looked like he was against the idea of teaming up, despite standing there and suggesting it. He was doing his best!
The universe should have known he wasn’t good at this. If they’d wanted a friendly, social butterfly, it should have chosen his brother.

Sparta just shrugged. "We power up like a Power Ranger to fight other people who also do this, but are full of the 'Darkness' and sometimes s**t hits the fan. I don't think it's supposed to make sense, Meninx," he said with a laugh. He was of the mind to just... go with the flow, and not sweat the small stuff. Like whether or not it made sense. (Ok, to be fair, it made his brain hurt to try to figure out if it made sense or not, but he wasn't about to tell this page that.)
The tall and broad chested man flashed a grin at Meninx. "I am totally down to partnering up and working together. Besides, it's more fun in numbers! And don't worry about not being a team player or social; everyone's different and we can like... chill silently, on opposite sides of the street or alley or park what have you while patrolling! I'm chill, man!"
These two were the definition of extrovert who found an introvert and became their friend simply by stint of being happy and existed to do so. "So, do you know anythin' about fighting or handling the Negaverse yet? We can go find a youma or agent to beat up if you wanna!"

Meninx listened to everything he said but seemed to take it all with a bit of caution. “I’ve got a brother,” he said dryly, because that wasn’t really much of an explanation, but–he’d always had someone to give him a hard time, so he had some experience.
“I’m thinking I should probably look into some classes or something.”
God, he didn’t have time for that. When was he going to do that, too? What was he going to give up, another hour of sleep?
“I don’t want to go out of my way to find someone to beat up right now, but. Maybe next time.”
…He could do a next time. If he had time to psych himself up for it, he could probably do it. “Do you want to swap numbers or something?”

"Yeah! Let's exchange numbers!" Sparta grinned and fished his phone out of subspace. He unlocked it and opened a new contact, handing it to Meninx. "Dunno if you have your signet ring yet, so might as well do it through our real phones." He didn't need to tell Meninx he didn't have his signet ring. He just kept forgetting to go find it, alright! It was just... a lot of stuff to process. Over several years. Ignoring most powered things.
Once complete, he pulled his spear out of the ground, and returned his phone to subspace. "Hit me up whenever you wanna patrol or spar, or something!"
He waved his goodbyes once Meninx was ready to leave. Hell yes he had a new friend! Awesome!
Kyuseisha no Hikari Figure we can close this!
