There was some uneasiness to Sumner as he walked along the shore of the reservoir. He probably should have avoided being around the area too much, but the Neptune Squire couldn't help but be attracted to one of the largest bodies of water in the area. The only other thing that would take him away from it would be the ocean which was no where near. He would have to stick it out here then if he wanted to be close, avoiding the incredibly annoying squeaky sand that was near the shore.

Perhaps those aliens could figure out why sand squeaked. It was beyond comprehension.

He still wasn't sure if he wanted to meet the aliens one on one. At least not without having someone with him. Who that would be, he didn't know yet. He felt as though he should go back to his Wonder, somewhere he knew wouldn't have changed all that much and if it did, it would be due to his presence than having some strange alien life form suddenly decide that they wanted to announce their presence to humans.

Even if he was a Squire, he hadn't been a part of all of this for very long. It had only been a little over a year now since he had awakened. He missed being a Page at times. He felt as though he had rushed into being a Squire, so now he was taking his time to really be in-tune with his powers.

He was now just thinking of what to do about the aliens, not even noticing the presence of another in the area.

The man she'd met in the forest had been a good source of information, but he had been neither a senshi or a knight. The Commodore's orders had been to investigate senshi and knights.

It had been to investigate the rest of Earth. Naeria had taken that task very seriously and was up to about fifty species catalogued in her own personal ComTech. After a day or so, though, she was running out of organisms to scan in the area directly outside the Vangaurd's barrier.

That meant it was time to head farther afield, in search of both new species and potential allies.

Naeria did not want to use her human guise. It made her ears all wrong. It was one thing if she had to go into town, but out here, she was letting herself exist in her natural state, with her lavender skin and her traditional Velencyian bodysuit. It did mean that she had to keep a careful eye on the GPS on her ComTech. If this Negaverse found her in this state, it would immediately compromise the mission.

Instead, the ComTech seemed to be picking up on the energy of somebody who was actually a knight.

At least, as far as the technology could tell.

He was also near a massive body of water, worth investigating in its own right.

She peeked out at him from behind a few trees- White Pines, she now knew. She stared for a long time as his path brought him closer to him, careful to check for any dark colors or weapons that would mark him as one of the Negaverse.

When he got close enough, she whispered, "Are you a knight?" before she could overthink it.

He hadn't expected a voice to suddenly whisper to him and so when he heard it, he couldn't help but jump in surprise and look around to see where it had come from. Eventually his eyes managed to settle and he could see that it appeared to be one of those aliens that had probably come from a ship. Otherwise why would they be asking if he was a Knight? His uniform certainly didn't scream it from those not-in-the-magical-know.

He let out a breath. "You scared me." As if his reaction hadn't made that obvious. He didn't mind talking to the aliens, at least a little. He had stopped walking at this point and turned his attention to her. "Yes, Neptune specifically. Is there... something you need?" He wondered why she was interested to know that he was a Knight. Perhaps they were researching them? He wasn't sure how long ago it was, but maybe Knights weren't present when the one alien was rescued or they just didn't see enough of them.

That was a fear response. That really wasn’t what they’d been trying for. The mission was to make a good impression. It might have been best to announce her presence some other way?

She made a mental note for future encounters.

“I apologize for scaring you. I am just trying not to be found by the wrong people.”

She nodded when he said Neptune. That confirmed what they’d heard, that there were senshi and knights from many different planets here on Earth.

“We are trying to make contact with Knights though, so, hello.” She held out her hand in the Earth greeting that they had been taught. Even as she did, though, her eyes drifted to the body of water behind him.

“I also have a personal question, if you do not mind.” She pointed in that direction with her other hand. “What is that?”

He let himself relax a bit. "It's all right. Unless I saw you from a distance or we had communicated beforehand, I probably would have been surprised anyway. Seeing something you aren't expecting suddenly in front of you or hearing something strange can trigger a fear response." He said with a small smile.

He looked at the held out hand, wondering if it was a way for the alien to collect energy. He supposed that if she did, he wouldn't miss it too much, and shook her hand.

When she asked her question he turned around to look back at the reservoir and then back at her. "That's not quite a personal question, but that's the city reservoir. They decided to make it a few years ago. For some reason the sand surrounding it squeaks when you walk on it." He didn't care if the alien knew about the squeaks, if they could possibly figure out why it did so, he didn't care how it happened. Any explanation would be okay at this point.

Naeria looked from her hand to the Knight’s face, her eyes narrowed slightly in focus. Why was he hesitating? Was she performing the ritual incorrectly, somehow? Perhaps she should practice some more with the others when she returned and she could see if any of them had managed a successful greeting.

He shook her hand eventually, though, and she smiled at him, completing the introduction.

Her attention was split, though. It was difficult to look away from the water that she’d spotted. There was just so much of it.

“Personal in that it does not relate to the mission,” she explained, wondering if there was some other definition of personal question that she was not aware of.

The squeaky sand was interesting, but not pressingly so. Naeria had found that nearly everything on Earth made some kind of noise.

Water, on the other hand, was precious. When he confirmed that this was a water source for the city, Naeria stared even more intently.

“So this is drinking water?” She asked. “It’s so exposed. What if it evaporates?”

He wasn't an English major, so perhaps it was his own fault, but it sounded more like she was confusing private and personal and secret. But at least he knew what they meant when they said "personal" from now on if he were to meet and talk to another. "Ah, I see what you mean now." So something personal to Earth.

Considering what the question was, he wondered how it was different from where they were from. Perhaps they didn't have an atmosphere? He thought he had heard something about their original planet being destroyed or something to that effect.

"It's natural that it evaporates. That's part of the cycle of water. It goes up and becomes air, then it naturally condenses up there and falls back down as water. Though drinking water is becoming a much more precious resource every year." He hoped he had explained that well enough. "Do you have any other questions? I'd be interested in hearing them and I'll help answer if I can."

Naeria was well versed in the states of matter and how water could easily fluctuate between them, but it only seemed right to nod while it was being explained to her.

"If this was covered somehow, that cycle could be contained to just this area," she explained. That was what she was used to. Everything, water especially, was contained, closed-system, carefully recycled. Seeing it left open like this, left to the whims of Earth's volatile weather, was completely unexpected.

But then, there was just so much of it. Water stretched out in all directions, nearly to the horizon. She had no idea how to calculate how deep it was, but it did not seem shallow.

"I have never seen anything like this," she admitted. "Does Earth truly have so much water that you do not have to worry about conserving it? You say it is becoming more precious over time, though? How so?"

Sumner couldn't help but let the questioning look fall on his face. "Really? Seems like you would need a lot more to keep it going than just covering it." He wasn't well-versed in science, but he thought that it would be hard to keep the water contained even if it was covered. If you let something in plastic container out in the sun, the water would eventually leave wouldn't it?

He didn't ask the rest of his question though. It seemed she was still interested. "Not all of it is drinkable. We can only have freshwater like this reservoir. Most of the water on Earth is full of salt. It's not poisonous per se, but it basically cancels out whatever effects water usually would give to us."

He shrugged. "Unfortunately most of it is drying up and there are too many humans here at this point. Well..." He thought about it for a moment. "It might be that, but it also might be the companies that destroy fresh water areas. It's not that we want that to happen, but sometimes people care more about getting as much of our currency as they can rather than the environment. It's sad really. I wouldn't be surprised if the Negaverse was partly behind it. I can't imagine that it's all human nature but..." He looked at her and gave her a sad, small smile. "I can't say for sure that we aren't just a terribly greedy species. I would like to think that I'm not, but I still feel guilty."

Naeria nodded. "Yes, there is more to the water recycling system on Velencya than just keeping everything contained. There are filtration systems for impurities like salts. It is very complex, but," she kept staring at the water, still not quite able to wrap her head around the fact that it was just there, exposed to the sky and, apparently, to pollution. "Containment is an important part of the process."

It wasn't really a surprise that they were having issues with their drinkable water evaporating or becoming contaminated if they were as careless with their resources as they seemed.

Her eyes narrowed slightly as he continued to speak, not out of annoyance, just confusion and deep thought.

"I do not understand this concept of currency," Naeria admitted. The thought of a ritual of exchange that had to be completed, perfectly, to avoid serious backlash was enough to keep her out of any of the Earth shops. Beyond that, though, this money seemed to highlight almost all of the flaws in Earth's society.

Apparently, it even came down to how they treated their water.

"I do not understand how polluting resources would get you more currency," she said, although it was true that she also did not really know where the money even came from.
