“Well it’s a good thing that Voltrene is knowledgeable.” Mused Kyril as she leaned against the wall and stared at the two little sleeping bundles nestled against one another. The large bassinet had a curtain of lace draped around it, the ribbons tying back the material for now until they closed it completely to keep out any insects. Kyril still couldn’t believe that she had carried those two little ones for nine months and even now she skirted around them as if trying to adapt to the very idea that she was their mother. They had barely managed to get the second level of the stone cottage completely into shape, the old foundations of some long forgotten fort turned into a cozy home for four, and the pair still had so much work to do on the bottom level with the kitchen and a large open area that Kyril wanted to turn into two separate rooms and a washroom. If they had been expecting just one child they would have been in dire need of supplies, especially since Kyril was still so far away from her family in Matori. She hadn’t wanted to bother them, not since Koril was just recently married to Sol, and her youngest siblings were still just teens and needing their parents’ attention. There was still so much to figure out and honestly Kyril had nearly left for Matori several times just because she was so overwhelmed. Still, when she had seen the babies there had been a sense of relief and Kyril had to admit they were adorable. Fairly lovable indeed.

“Hmm?” Jhin came around the corner and dropped a bundle of blankets and pillows onto the bed. “I am glad that you agreed to plan for twins instead of a single baby.” He stated though his aqua gaze was full of worry as he studied Kyril. “Everything alright?” The ranger had been doing his best to stay around the house, making repairs while also keeping an eye on Kyril, but even he couldn’t avoid patrols forever so he had spent some mornings and afternoons away during the last few months. Now that the girls had been born he had managed to only take early morning patrols so that he could spend the afternoons with Kyril while working on whatever was necessary.
Today, however, was the beginning of a break as other rangers had come back into the village from escorting a caravan up into Zena. Jhin was thankful that they had returned but it also meant that his Aunt was finally back. She had been gone for nearly a year now and well….needless to say he was a bit worried about her response to all of the changes in his life.

“The girls are sleeping so I would assume that yes, everything is fine for now.” Quipped Kyril with a forced smile as she glanced back towards Jhin. He wasn’t the only one thinking about his Aunt’s return today. Kyril had already changed into three outfits this morning from her wardrobe and cleaned the downstairs the best that she could despite the construction going on. Eventually she had settled on a simple tunic and leggings though her hair was twisted back with some ornate pins with crystals. Not like that actually made her feel better, but at least she felt more presentable now for whenever Tyka arrived at the scene.

“Good.” Jhin gave a wary nod before moving so that he could go and tuck the blankets around the girls more tightly. The ranger simply brushed a finger lightly against their soft curls before pulling back so that he could study Kyril again. “Do you think we’ll survive dinner?” He finally asked as he addressed the obvious shadow looming over them both. As leader of the rangers his Aunt was more loose about certain morals, as long as no one was getting stabbed in the back, but Jhin wasn’t certain how she would take to the sudden and drastic changes in his life.
“You look lovely, by the way.” He managed as an afterthought as his gaze trailed over Kyril. He knew she was nervous simply because of the ornaments in her hair and the extra care she had taken in applying some cosmetics, the Oban style bringing out the gold of her eyes with the smoky kohl and the shimmering red of her lips a bright contrast against her tan skin. It was nice seeing her dressed up like this and he felt guilty that she didn’t seem to be able to wear the elegant outfits in the forest like she surely had worn in Oba.

“Here’s hoping.” Kyril replied as she twisted a stray lock of hair, a final attempt to put something into place. Her gaze drifted towards the scene and she felt some of her anxiety melt away. At least she had Jhin on her side. His patience and support was the only reason she had kept it together over the last year or so. When she felt like running away from everything he had always given her security and now she had a home with him in the heart of this great forest. Her cheeks flushed with the compliment but Kyril just raised a hand as if dismissing it. “I suppose.” She glanced away almost shyly. “Should we start preparing things while it’s quiet?”

“We should.” Jhin made certain to place the pillows on the bed and left the blankets at the bottom so that Kyril could nest later as he liked to call it. Whenever she got too tired or cold she’d always borrow into the blankets so that she could relax. Thankfully spring was finally here and the mornings were not as chilly as before so they could look forward to summer’s warmth again. He didn’t mind the cold as much even though he did enjoy sitting by the fireplace in the evenings, reading reports or just relaxing there while chatting with Kyril.
“Tyka isn’t a horrible woman, she’s just somewhat intimidating.” Jhin found himself adding as he walked up to Kyril and squeezed her hand comfortingly. Everything would be fine. His Aunt would surely love her!

“Mmhmm.” Kyril just nodded though she squeezed Jhin’s hand in return before carefully making her way out of the room and downstairs. Even though her leg had healed by now the bones hadn’t mended perfectly so there was the slightest of limps to her steps. It wasn’t too bad now that they had twisted a railing alongside the worn stone steps leading up to the second half of the building. Kyril could now even handle getting to the upper areas of the home that Jhin had started expanding on, the ancient building providing the perfect foundations for them to work with.
“I left the bread to raise so it should be ready to go into the ovens.” She found herself stating simply as she disappeared into the kitchen without waiting to see if Jhin was following her. Even if Kyril didn’t want to argue there was still a knot of dread in her chest. Who could even know how his Aunt would react?

Well, here's hoping. Jhin took a last moment to survey the room and to make certain the girls were comfortably sleeping before heading downstairs himself. The wind earthling made his way past the open windows twisting around the curved staircase going down into the kitchen, sheer green and gold curtains swaying in the faint breeze like flags that showed him the way down. Colored glass orbs with candles were nestled into notches along the wall to provide lights at night, the orbs casting soft lights of various colors along the stairs to guide the way. Within the last half year they had worked hard to make this place a true home, missing pieces of the stairs filled in and then decorations that Kyril had picked out to bring color and life to the cold gray walls of stone.
Myra and another ranger had helped with the kitchen, the area now more open with a large stone furnace and cabinets that they had built into the walls from recently fallen trees that had been found in the forest after a large storm came through last fall. The cabinets had been painted after a long afternoon together, some breaks for playful shenanigans, and now sported teal vines twisting over the glazed wood with little golden flowers. Myra had made certain to give them various spices as well which Kyril had immediately taken to in preparing special breads like she enjoyed back in Matori and Oba. So while Kyril started by placing the breads in the oven, Jhin started working on the stew for tonight’s meal. It was still chilly and it would be a perfect way to warm up everyone this evening.

They both had a good habit of just quietly working alongside each other. Kyril fell into the rhythm as she prepared the breads, placed them in the ovens and then started working on preparing some other things to go with the stew. Some fresh vegetables, cleaned and sliced so that she could roast them later, At least that’s something I can do. While Kyril wasn’t an amazing cook like others she could at least prepare simple meals now, a vast improvement from previous attempts.
Eventually everything seemed to be in place and she found herself scurrying around to do the final preparations. “Maybe we can take a break just to enjoy the peace before Tyka arrives?” She murmured as she slipped past Jhin who was finishing up the stew.

“That sounds like a lovely idea.” Replied Jhin with a smile as he placed the iron pot above the fire so that it could cook. The aroma of fresh venison with root vegetables and spices filled the air and both of their stomachs grumbled. A laugh escaped his lips before he plucked two pink fruits from the counter and handed one to Kyril. “Here.” Jhin brushed against her and gave her a loving nudge before heading upstairs so that they could relax before preparing for the inevitable visit.

Inevitable indeed but at least they got to spend a nice afternoon together despite the storm clouds on the horizon.
Finally the time came and admittedly Kyril had been expecting Tyka to be a firm Sautian woman with a narrowed gaze and judgmental approach. What she witnessed instead was a tomboyish woman who immediately grabbed Jhin into a hug before pausing to glance over Kyril with a raised brow. “You’ve truly been busy since I was helping out the brotherhood in Zena.” She mused with a shake of her head, “Kyril, right? Nice to meet you.” Kyril found herself holding out a hand before getting squeezed into a hug as well. Though it felt a bit too strong and she found herself wincing before taking a step back to allow Tyka into their home. She had just been expecting Tyka and it was a surprise to see an Oban woman coming into the doorway as well. Kyril found herself blinking before glancing over to Jhin with confusion. Confusion that only grew as she noticed his strange reaction.
Who was this stranger?

“Well you did say that this place had potential if I wanted to work on it.” Replied Jhin with a flush before glancing over towards Kyril almost apologetically. His aunt enjoyed surprising others with her reactions, so it was no wonder that she hadn’t just approached them more formally. The most surprising thing wasn’t his aunt’s affections but the arrival of the Oban behind her. Jhin found his gaze widening, his heart twisting in his chest as he watched Giya walk inside. “Giya…” His voice softened before he held out a hand, “Why are you here?”
“I was just thinking about things and came back when Tyka sent an invitation.” Giya replied, her gaze thoughtful as she studied Jhin and then glanced towards Kyril before taking his hand and giving it a firm squeeze. “Since I returned to Oba she wanted to discuss better strategies for the rangers helping the summer caravans to Sulburi.”
“I told her to visit with me. There should be plenty to share, right?” Tyka added in before brushing past the surprised pair and towards the more open space that they had converted into a family room of sorts that worked as a dining room when they had guests. The large table had been pulled away from the wall and six chairs sat around it. Kyril and Jhin had already placed the table for three, but Jhin hurried to the kitchen with an apologetic look towards Kyril so that he could gather a fourth bowl.

Oh spirits. Kyril could already feel the tension in the air. There was definitely something between the Oban ranger and Jhin, that much was obvious with the way the woman studied after him when he walked away to the kitchen. A strange rage flared up within Kyril’s chest and she had to swallow against the tangled feelings. Surely this was nothing, right? Why did she feel so unnerved? “Please go ahead and make yourselves comfortable since I’m certain you’re tired from your journey.” She managed finally as she gestured towards the table. “We did make plenty of food thankfully.”
“Feel free to go ahead and sit as well.” Tyka studied Kyril almost thoughtfully. “Someone as beautiful and delicate as you shouldn’t have to worry about serving rough warriors like us.” It sounded like a polite enough statement, but Kyril had learned from her years of dealing with the upper class of Oba that such honeyed words could be actual insults. Delicate, hmm? Maybe she didn’t have that approval after all. Of course not. What had she been expecting?

Jhin winced when he turned the corner and heard the compliment. He already knew where his Aunt was heading with this. He had hoped that Giya was just a coincidental appearance, but it seemed more was at play here. His Aunt was far from being against mixed races, but she did have a disdain for those who didn’t quite belong with the stronger rangers. Why invite merchants to reside here when they have to deal with protecting them all the time? If caravans didn’t come through recklessly there would be less casualties over the years, but artisans and merchants were just money grubbing weaklings. That had been one of many of Tyka’s spills even though she did work to protect trade routes and the like despite her bias. It was profitable to the rangers, helped the locals that relied on the supplies and kept them in control of protecting this area of deep forest.
“You know Kyril helped fight bandits when I first met her.” Jhin found himself starting as he took a seat next to Kyril and started serving the stew. “She helped protect others even though she was just traveling through with a caravan who happened to have an extra seat. It’s always a surprise when you see how strong her right hook can be.” Even though his words were light and playful there was a tension in the air, a defense against his Aunt’s accusations. “Just unfortunate that she took a hit helping me out so she had to rest up here for a bit. Everyone in the village was surprised about how quickly she managed to adapt and start helping out.”

Kyril’s cheeks flamed as she stabbed a piece of bread into the stew. Jhin… Even now he was protecting her. Was she so useless that she couldn’t defend herself against his relative? Holding back the urge to release a breath of frustration the woman instead just smiled towards Tyka. “It definitely was an adjustment, but I think I’m managing fairly well despite things. Even in Oba and Matori I wasn’t one to just simply sit around. I enjoy being helpful and don’t mind doing work so everyone has finally started allowing me to pick up tasks here and there even though I still do crafting.”
“Oh?” Tyka found herself ripping a piece of bread into pieces so that she could splash them into her own stew. “That sounds interesting. I suppose it’s been a wild few months since I’ve been gone. Honestly Giya and I thought they were just playful rumors at first because Jhin is supposedly a hard man to pin down with something that he considered distracting like a relationship. But here you are, so I’m impressed.”
“Ah.” Kyril found the corners of her mouth twitching upwards into a smile. “Maybe it just took the right sort of person for him to think differently.” She hadn’t noticed how Giya had stiffened and shot even Tyka a look. Definitely something going on there. She just hoped her faith in Jhin wasn’t misplaced, especially when she saw how he glanced towards Giya here and there during their discussion.
