Kyril woke up to the hazy sunlight of morning. The hybrid blinked sleepily as she tried to adjust to her surroundings, exhaustion making it hard for her to fully focus on anything just yet. The softness of the bed didn’t quite feel like her own and there was a strong smell of forest, the scent of pine lingering in the air. Oddly enough Kyril didn’t seem to mind the strangeness, that was until she shifted and felt pain radiating all the way up her body. Agony made her wince and the woman found herself letting out a soft cry as her mind and body both caught up to one another. That’s right. We were attacked by bandits and I shattered my ankle. Even the healer had needed some time to repair the torn ligaments and crushed bones. So here she was resting up in the ranger’s home so that she could take the necessary time to heal. That much Kyril remembered now that she was waking up. “Must have been some potion.” She murmured wearily as she carefully scooted so that she could sit up, now that she wasn’t actually trying to fling herself out of bed the movements weren’t quite as painful and she found that she could tolerate it a bit more as long as she moved slowly.
At least the bed was soft. Kyril pressed her hands against the feather stuffed mattress, her lips curling upwards into a small smile as she enjoyed the silky feeling of the sheets against her skin. It was definitely not a bed that she would have expected from a ranger living out in the woods, that was for certain. The very thought amused her before the realization crept across that she was in a stranger’s bed. Kyril wasn’t really embarrassed but more so worried about where he had to sleep last night. He had been injured as well so surely he hadn’t slept on the floor! Her gaze narrowed thoughtfully before the tangy aroma of tea caught her attention and Kyril found herself glancing towards the doorway.

Jhin found himself twisting his head back and forth, his neck popping with the movement. The wind earthling’s whole body ached but thankfully nothing major had been injured during yesterday’s fight. After helping the sleeping hybrid into his own bed, Jhin had spent the night in his Aunt’s room since she was away on business and as soon as he hit the mattress the man passed out. Thankfully he managed to wake up with the sun and after peeking into the other bedroom, Jhin found his guest still sleeping peacefully. The ranger paused for a second, his aqua gaze lingering over the hybrid with concern. At least she seemed to be sleeping without pain, an improvement from yesterday evening when he had been helping the healer wipe down her forehead with a damp cloth to fight the fever and helping to get medicine into her system. For someone who had been so full of gusto yesterday when fighting alongside of him she seemed so delicate now. Jhin’s expression softened at the thought before he realized he was staring and with a flush the wind earthling had darted away towards the kitchen.
The healer said she would need this set of herbs to help with the leg. Jhin reflected on everything he had gone through yesterday as he shifted through the cabinets and came out with a ceramic mug and hot water. Thankfully the rest of the rangers had managed to drive away the bandits and the merchants had recovered what they could before getting new wagons and safely returning to their journey. The hybrid woman in his room had been a passenger so Jhin had offered to take care of her while the rest continued on with their trip. There was no patience with merchants most days after all, especially not with winter looming on the horizon. Now he found himself almost in disbelief at the whole situation even as he turned the corner and slowly approached the room with a tray of tea and some breakfast for them both. “I see you’re awake.” He began quietly as he lifted the tray as an offering. “Feeling hungry?”

“Ah.” Kyril blinked as she recognized the ranger from yesterday and slowly nodded as her stomach rumbled at the sight of food. “I suppose I could have a bite of something.” She admitted, scooting carefully back so that she was propped up against the few pillows behind her. “Did you sleep alright?” She began after a moment as she reached to take the offered cup of tea, her fingers wrapping around the ceramic mug and soaking up the warmth from the steaming brew. Strange how she had fought alongside the wind earthling yesterday but now she suddenly felt almost shy around him. It was most definitely because she felt guilty for taking his bed and having him worry over her even when she had just barged into his home without warning.

Jhin smiled as he watched her take the tea. “I slept fine. This isn’t the only bed in the house so you don’t have to worry.” He promised as he shifted a few steps closer and glanced towards the edge of the bed. “Do you mind if I take a seat?” He asked finally as he brought over a small table and propped the wooden tray on top of it. It was far easier to eat in here than worry about how to get her into the kitchen. The healer had instructed him to try and keep her off of the foot for a full week or so before trying anything. She had shattered it when she helped distract the bandits from hitting the merchants, something which should have been his responsibility and yet she had gotten injured aiding him during the fight. Needless to say, Jhin felt guilty and did not hesitate to volunteer to help take care of the artisan while she recovered in their village.

A pained chuckle left Kyril’s lips as she nodded. “It’s your furniture so why would I protest?” She managed quietly as she smiled towards Jhin. “If anything I should have been the one asking you that. Thank you again for doing all of this for me, I never meant to barge into your home like this.” She admitted with a slight flush, turning her gaze towards the bitter tea and raising it to her lips to take a sip. The hybrid winced and made a face in distaste but she continued drinking since she realized the importance of the medicine. What was it? The worst it tasted the more beneficial it was for you? At least that was what Amra had always told her when Kyril got sick and always had to take medicine as a youngling.

“Fair.” Jhin had to raise a hand to cover his grin at the expression the hybrid made whenever she tasted the medicine. If it was anything like his own herbal tea this morning then it was surely bitter with some strange citric tang added to the mix. The ranger carefully walked around so that he could sit at the edge of the bed, his attention turning to the bread and fruits on the tray. “I cut the apples so that they would be easier to eat. They’re crisp and native to the forest, one of the best orchards hidden from the rest of the world.” Jhin admitted as he offered a piece towards the hybrid with a small smile, “And if anything I’m the one who should apologize because if I had handled things better then you should have never gotten hurt. It’s only right that I offer shelter for someone who took a blow for me.”

Kyril pursed her lips in protest but took the slice of apple. It was super crisp and she found herself enjoying the sweet flavor, a definite upgrade from the bitterness of the tea. Even if the man felt responsible for her injury it was still a bit against Kyril’s pride to be accepting so much help from a stranger. “Even so...I’ll make it up to you somehow.” She murmured as she stole another piece of the apple and chewed on it before eyeing the bread. It was simpler than the toasted loaves with seasoned nuts and swirls of spices that Kyril enjoyed back home, but it was still delicious. The piece melted in her mouth and she found herself sighing in satisfaction. She had slept so much that she hadn’t eaten in almost a full day and her stomach was more than eager to remind her of that fact. “Everyone made it out safely, right?” She found herself asking suddenly as she realized that she had no idea what happened after helping to douse the fires with water. Was anyone else here in this forest? Did they leave without her or...well the other option made her suddenly lose her appetite and Kyril found herself simply holding onto the mug of tea, her gaze downcast at the thought.

Amusement danced across Jhin’s expression at the stubbornness of the hybrid woman. “I suppose you could at least tell me your name then.” He teased as he plucked a piece of the apple for himself. “You probably heard that mine is Jhin, but I never got the chance to actually introduce myself. I’m a ranger here at Valhein, the ranger’s village.” It was the name of the encampment hidden deep within the ancient forest where they had settled to guard nature and man alike. The trees reached high to the heavens and even their homes had been built into the bases and up in the limbs of the twisting giants, rope bridges connecting the community living in the upper foliage with ladders leading to those nestled below in the roots. Jhin’s own home shared with his Aunt had two levels as it stretched upwards into the tree and it was why he had opted to give the hybrid his room as it was on the lower level instead of the upper area where he had spent the night.
His amused expression shifted as the woman asked about the fight but despite his sorrow Jhin nodded his head. “This time everyone made it out safely. Not so much the bandits but the rangers took care of everyone. The merchants left yesterday afternoon as soon as they received new wagons, most of the injured opted to travel along with them towards the next city since they weren’t as injured as you.” Not a surprise considering how most had fled from the scene or hid nearby during the skirmish with only a couple, including the hybrid fighting alongside the rangers.

“Jhin.” Kyril repeated before giving a nod, “My name is Kyril and I am not a ranger at Valhein.” She found herself teasing lightly. “Honestly I can’t even give you a location for myself since I’ve wandered so much lately. My family travels between Matori and Oba while I just came back from Belrea.” Kyril’s spirits lifted a bit at the information, a sigh of relief escaping her. “I’m glad everyone made it out okay. I’m an artisan more than a fighter, but I wanted to help.” She admitted quietly as she lifted her gaze back towards Jhin’s, a sheepish expression crossing her delicate features. “I’m sorry if I only caused more trouble for you that day.” She shifted slightly on the bed with a wince before raising the mug to finish off the rest of her tea. At least they had made it out okay, right? That much was a relief for certain.

“Good to know.” Replied Jhin with a small smile of his own. “I would be ashamed to not know a fellow ranger, especially someone that stood out like you.” Jhin caught his own words with a slight cough, his gaze brightening as he quickly added. “After all, who else could swing a plank of wood around like that? It’s a very unique weapon choice.” Despite all of the pain and frustrations from yesterday there were some amusing aspects to the whole situation. At least now they could laugh about it, something which honestly surprised Jhin when lately he had been more somber than anything else.

A flush decorated Kyril’s cheeks and she found herself grabbing at the last piece of bread. As if stealing the food was some sort of punishment for his teasing! The very thought flustered Kyril more but she didn’t relinquish her prize and instead plopped the food into her mouth so that she could chew on it instead of answering right away. “Mmmhmm.” She managed before glancing back to catch the mischievous light in the man’s gaze, the look making her heart flutter. Now that she actually wasn’t fighting for her life she could take the time to appreciate how handsome the ranger truly was. The golden hair, the aqua gaze that had a shimmer of light despite the sorrow resting just beneath and even those flecks of crystals around his lips...the very thought made Kyril’s flush darken and she found herself focusing on the room again I must be acting silly because of the medicine or I got hit really hard in the head yesterday and forgot all about it.. What could she talk about as a distraction from her racing heart and burning cheeks? “So the rangers have a village here then.” She finally managed after swallowing the last bite of her food. Lame. At least it wasn’t talking about the weather, right?

Amusement crossed Jhin’s expression but he didn’t protest as the last of the food was taken away. “If you need more I can always return to the kitchen.” He commented with a small smile, “I don’t mind especially since you’ll probably be stuck here for another day or two while that ankle heals up.” Just speaking about her injury made his expression shift again. Why hadn’t he protected her better? Even if everyone had managed to escape with their lives so many had been injured and the ranger couldn’t help the frustration that knotted his heart. So many lives forfeit because of the greed of men. The rangers would accept those in need but the bandits simply wanted gold without morals. His distracted gaze flickered back towards the hybrid and he found himself nodding. “Yes. The forest is so old that we don’t know when the first rangers came here, but the locals rely on us to help keep thieves and the like from stopping merchants that are trying to bring supplies to town.”
A sigh left his lips. “Unfortunately for you the caravan that you joined didn’t want to wait for a band of us to scout the main road first.” Jhin gave a shrug even though his frustrations were obvious. “Yet because of their haste now they are a whole day delayed and you’re even worse off with a shattered ankle that will take a week or more to heal depending on how your body reacts to the healer’s treatments. Fools will be fools.”

“I’m fine for now.” Replied Kyril sheepishly as she placed her empty mug on the tray. “I knew that the trees looked like giants when we came through yesterday morning, but I never thought about how old the forest truly is. I’ve spent most of my time by the ocean or in the desert so this is all new to me.” Belrea didn’t count either since she stayed mostly in the city the whole time instead of traveling about those forests or mountains.
“Well on the bright side that gives me more time to explore a forest while I recover.” Joked Kyril with a small smile, “Even if they did make mistakes it changes nothing if I get angry at them now so I’ll just focus on healing.” She mused before shifting once more, a small hiss of pain escaping her lips. “I hear that anger is bad for recovery anyways.”

“Oh? I suppose I’ll keep that in mind then when you can walk later.” Replied Jhin without missing a beat. He had seen the ocean and desert when he was traveling with his father before becoming a ranger and there was a pang of nostalgia as he imagined seeing them again. Had he simply been in the forest for too long or was there something else making him think about enjoying such sights?
Jhin almost felt deflated as Kyril dismissed the caravan so easily. If only he could be that forgiving, but such things were beyond him after the loss of several rangers. “If others could learn from it for the future then I’ll gladly be angry.” He admitted before her hiss of pain had him moving forward, his hands hovering above her leg that was wrapped in bandages and resting on top of the heavy quilts. The colorfully patterned quilts were half folded to give her some height revealing the plain sheets beneath, the piles of pillows taken from his aunt’s bed to give her even more support. “May I help?” He asked while glancing towards Kyril and waiting on her permission.

Damn that flush just kept lingering on her cheeks. Was she running a fever again? Kyril’s expression softened at Jhin’s words and she found herself curious. “Something happened...didn’t it?” She began quietly before looking away. “I’m sorry, don't mind me.” What right did she have to ask such a question? If he was hurting from something personal, why would he want to share it with a stranger? Instead of saying anything else the hybrid just nodded at Jhin’s offer and waited patiently while he moved closer to her leg. Why was he being so nice to her? Kyril still couldn’t quite understand it. He wasn’t like the nobles that knew of her family’s wealth or influence...so why?
