Zyphire was in the kitchen like usual when Katori caught him. The young mage had a frantic look about her, her short hair in disarray and her whole outfit was a bit well...not together at all. Zyphire found himself blinking in confusion at his younger cousin, his mixing bowl propped up on one hip with a wooden spoon in another hand frozen in place while he studied the hybrid. “S’up?” He joked almost playfully with a raised brow. Even though she looked flustered the Shifter kept his cool as he was in his zone, the comforts of the warm kitchen. If anything Zyphire knew she would tell him soon enough what the problem was and he could only hope that it wouldn't interrupt his cooking session.

“Seriously?” Katori frowned as she attempted to tug her tunic in place. It had obviously been thrown over her leggings in a hurry and the belt wasn’t even clasped properly as she walked around the kitchen. “Mom said that the raptrix had broken down the gates again and if I don’t hurry the capramel will be running about with the roati soon.” She sighed as she attempted to run a hand through her tangled hair, the strands flopping to the right with the frantic movements. “Have anything prepared before I lose my whole morning?” She found herself asking after a thoughtful pause, her silvery gaze darting towards the oven.

“Raptrix or other cousins?” Teased Zyphire as he set down the bowl finally and moved so that he could pluck a biscuit from the oven and toss it towards Katori. “Jam is on the counter if you’d like. I was working with wildberries so that we can have some for spring..” The Shifter dusted flour from his fingers before returning to the bowl so that he could pour the contents into a cast iron skillet. His mouth pursed thoughtfully while he worked more quickly than before as he realized this was probably going to be a bigger project if he didn’t jump in soon. What a grand way to start the day.

“Honestly? Probably both.” Katori tilted her head back with a sigh. “I wouldn’t be surprised if they were trying to joust with Midnight and some of the younger raptrix again.” The rambunctious kids always ended up breaking something so it honestly would not surprise her if that was truly the case this time. At least she could enjoy a warm biscuit. Katori caught the offering with quick hands and gave a thankful nod towards Zyphire before spreading some jam over the biscuit. A happy moan left her lips as the flaky layers and sweet jam melted in her mouth. “Yer da beft.” She mumbled through hurried bites, her hand reaching for the water jug as she finished chewing so that she could quickly wash it down.

Zyphire chuckled before taking a biscuit for himself. “I’m sure we’ll know once we get there. The paw prints should be a dead giveaway.” If there were earthling footprints there or if it looked like some broken pieces of spears were lying around then it would be solid proof of the children’s shenanigans. Still, Zyphire could only shake his head in amusement since the young teens kept things interesting while he was home with the family and not traveling.

“Oh?” Katori raised a brow, a smile crossing her lips before she wiped away the crumbs sticking there. “Sounds like you’re coming to help me then?” She asked as she studied the Shifter before roaming over to snatch another biscuit, the looming possibility of a long morning making her appetite grow. Food was definitely the best way to her heart and surely that was why Zyphire was her favorite cousin….at the moment at least. “We should hurry then.” If the gate was truly that bad then her mother would need their help gathering all the roati and their capramel before they wandered too far into the wilderness. Not all chiavi or raptrix took too kindly to prey wandering out in the open like the ones at the sanctuary did.

“Yeah, yeah. You’re fortunate that I finished the quiche for dinner. It’ll take a few hours to cook over a low heat.” Zyphire gestured towards his recent creation, a savory blend of eggs, roati cheese, herbs with some meat and vegetables strewn in as well. Hopefully they would get back in time so that it wasn’t a burnt mess of a meal for dinner. Now that would be disappointing. As it was, the Shifter agreed with his cousin. They did need to get moving soon. “Stop eating and get going then.” He teased as he ushered Katori away from the stove and out of the kitchen.

Katori pursed her lips but quickly swallowed the last bite and stole one last drink of water before darting backwards. “Yes, yes.” She repeated with a small smile. “I suppose it’s best if we do leave now.” Thankfully the stone kitchen was at the southern end of the manor, the giant area having its own door that led into the backyard of the sanctuary. It would be a quick walk down to the fields where they kept the smaller animals, their safety a priority at the sanctuary especially since her family relied on their wool and milk for keeping them throughout the colder months.

Zyphire could only chuckle as he followed Katori outside. Unlike the hybrid who only wore a light tunic over her leggings, Zyphire still opted to keep warmer leathers and even had a fur cloak that he had clasped around his shoulders before leaving the kitchen. Thankfully it was only early winter so the deep cold hadn’t settled in over the area yet. At least the sanctuary was far south, almost at the edge of Sauti and so the bitter winter winds that covered northern Zena in ice didn’t cut so deeply here. It made things far more bearable even though he did prefer his furs and to spend a good chunk of his time in the kitchen or by a fireplace. None of that mattered right now though as he kept a brisk pace to keep up with Katori.

“They should be around here...yep.” Katori let out a sigh as she kept going and saw the damages. The fencing had been busted to the side and it suspiciously looked like there were some pieces of extra wood that did not quite fit in with the original fencing. “Good thing we’re experts at fixing gates.” She mused with a slight shrug before glancing around. Already some of the roati were roaming down the hill, outside of the fence boundaries, and the girl let out a sigh. “Roati race, anyone?” At least the capramel seemed more content to laze about under the pines towards the edge of the fencing. It was one of the better safe spots save for the barn that they could freely enter, a good place full of hay that could keep them warm whenever the winter storms hit.

“You mean I’m an expert.” Zyphire grinned as he walked past Katori and patted her shoulder. The girl had a bit too much power in her body and so when she was growing up there were plenty of fences that had fallen prey to her punches or kicks. At least it looked like a simple fix this time. The teens or the “wild” raptrixes had apparently rushed into the corner of the gate, breaking the screws there. All he would have to do is temporarily fix it up with some solid twine and then work on the actual fix once they gathered all of the animals back into the barn.

A flush decorated Katori’s cheeks. She knew exactly what he was referencing and admittedly knew that she still had a bit of the same problem. The mage clenched her fists, her runes set in the gauntlets that she constantly wore glowing with the movement, and then she shook her head. Enough talk! They had things to do! “Well let’s focus on the roati first.” She decided before darting away from Zyphire and racing across the fields after the little fluffs that bounced along.

Zyphire smirked before stretching his arms above his head. “I suppose.” He mumbled as he took a more leisurely walk around the edges of the fence, gently guiding in a few roati who had lingered around the outside. The Shifter would leave Katori to do the heavy running since she had all of the energy for it. “Come on little baas.” Zyphire called out as he rounded up about four who had wandered a bit too close to the edges of the forest. At least it was somewhat safer than going out into the open valley down below. They kept some mammu and more of the wilder raptrix down that way since it was nice and open, but it gave plenty of space for flying predators to just swoop in whenever they liked. Talisia had a few trained chiavi and raptrix who guarded the area but they couldn’t protect everything that wandered out so far. That was why the fenced area was so important, it was constantly protected and enclosed away from watchful predators.

“Come on!” Katori frowned as she tumbled into another roati, her arms clutching around the little fluff of tan and white. “You’re like a cloud, an annoyingly squishy mischievous cloud!” She teased as she squeezed the wiggling creature before tucking another one beneath her arm. As long as she kept carrying two back at a time they’d eventually all be caught, right? At least that was her hope. Katori let out a groan as she watched Zyphire just leisurely guiding in another two roati on his own. “How many is that?”

“Six.” Zyphire blinked at Katori, “So if that’s five from you and six for me….eleven, right? I think the others stayed inside.” He believed there should be around twenty which matched up whenever he took a moment to count all of the mischievous little guys. All six of their capramel had stayed together as well which was a good sign. Those were recent additions to the sanctuary and while Zyphire was thankful for them he also hoped that the teens would be the ones in charge of cleaning the stables more than him. It was one thing to let them roam through the fields during summer, but another thing to deal with them in the colder months.
