It's been quiet, peaceful in the world of Tendaji. Many have grown used to the new normal between the Aishans, the Earthlings, and the Kahikinans. Because of this sense of security, a few unsavory folk are taking advantage of the distracted locals.
A pickpocket is on the prowl in the marketplace, and you find yourself involved.
This prompt will be resolved by rolling 1D100. xxxxx1-20: Oh no! Something VERY VALUABLE was stolen! xxxxx21-50: While not majorly valuable, you do have an important item taken from you. xxxxx51-90: A small item is taken and you immediately identify the thief in the crowd. xxxxx91-100: Not today - you catch the thief in the act.
[ Each participating character in this WE rolls 1d100 and roleplays their reaction. You are also welcome to have your character reacting to this event happening to someone else, if it makes more sense for your character's plot.
Or, even better, maybe your character is the thief - roleplay it out from the perspective of the thief. ]
The market was bustling with activity, and Zuri was waiting as patiently as she could by the central fountain for her mothers. The pair was in a shop to look at weapons; a subject for which the youngling held zero interest. Instead, she had opted to wait outside and watch the comings and goings of those around her. As long as no one interacted with her too much, she found that people watching could be quite enjoyable!
Well, that.. and it allowed her the chance to subtly show off her pretty jewelry. She might get the stink eye on the regular for her Elarian heritage, but she could take pleasure in showing how she was one of the upper echelon just like them despite it.
Maritza was far from pleased to be in the midst of an Oban market. It wasn't intentional by far; if she'd had it her way she would have been halfway back to Belrea by now. Which was what should have happened, but a few engine malfunctions had occurred that were so massive in scale that they couldn't be repaired in Tendaji. They needed parts; parts that only Belrea could provide. So, a small section of the crew had volunteered to take a ship across the ocean back home, gather what they needed and head out on the next available airship.
She walked through the market with her well worn pack tossed over her shoulder, trying her best to spot the rest of her group. They weren't nearly as put off by crowds as she was. They'd all decided a little shopping would be good; gather supplies and what not. Of course Maritza had protested but in the end she was left on her own.

A small group of teens walked up to the fountain with admiring expressions. "You look like a painting!" one crooned.
Zuri clearly puffed up with pride. "That is kind of you. Thank you."
Another girl cocked her head. "It'd be even better if we adjusted her hair around that clip a little better... Right here." She stepped forward and reached for Zuri's head.
Though she stiffened up at the close proximity, Zuri's pride in her appearance won over her concern. Anything to look even prettier!
The next thing she knew, she was being shoved backward and the fancy clip was torn from her hair. She sputtered and flailed in the water of the fountain, trying to get her soaked hair out of her face in order to yell.
The trio of teens was off and running though, laughing as they ran off with their prize.

At first Maritza paid little attention to the teenagers. She noticed them, of course; how could she not with as loud as they were. Her eyes drifted their way for a moment and remained when she noticed just who they were talking to. That child...wasn't entirely Oban. Still, she didn't look alkidike either and yet she was definitely mixed with something.
Then came the shove and Maritza found herself bellowing, "HEY." It was one thing to be a brat, but another entirely to be a bully! She stormed forward, ready to lay down the law, when a man brushed past her. She turned around to snap at him only to notice her bag in his arms! "Drop that!"
The thief used the distraction to snatch all of her belongings - including her gold and shipping pass! - before running off into the crowd. All at once her irritating outing was turning into a bigger disaster!
A younger Maritza would have taken off after him immediately, but...the motherly Maritza turned back to the girl in the fountain. She found herself getting closer, propping her knee on the side and reaching a hand over to help pull her her. "Come on, before you get sick."

A hesitant hand reached up to feel for what she knew she wouldn't find. The hairclip was missing. Zuri could feel her eyes burning with humiliation and frustration, tears thankfully mingling with the water already dripping down her face and from her hair. Why did they have to be so mean about it?
She blinked quickly when she heard a voice nearby, and looked up to see an unfamiliar hand reaching for her. She bit her lip, hesitating a moment before accepting the assistance. "Thank you," she murmured quietly to hide the tremble in her voice. Her hand reached up again in another futile search for the missing clip before pressing the heels of her hands into her eyes to chase off the emotions. Her dress was soaking... "Could you... walk me home?" She wanted nothing more than to just hide away right then, but she also found herself unusually reluctant to continue on alone.

Please don't cry.
It wasn't so much a mantra from a bleeding heart as it was a desperate plea not to be the one to deal with it. She would, of course, because Maritza couldn't not do it but she wouldn't volunteer for it. When the little one pressed her hands to her eyes Maritza sighed and reached forward to place a comforting hand on her shoulder. "Sure; lead the way." Once she had the child settled on her feet she awkwardly patted that same shoulder and released contact.
"What was it that they took?" Because that was it, wasn't it? She kept reaching up for something that was no longer there and they had taken off quickly after pushing her down.

"Thank you." Her voice was a little fuller this time, but still much lower than her usual confident self. It was definitely reassuring having the adult walking alongside her, and she took a few deep breaths. "It's a hair clip. Mama Cu said it had been in her family for ages..." She bit down on her lip hard. Saying it out loud seemed to make it even worse; not to mention that attempting to walk elegantly in a heavy and wet dress was proving to be embarrassingly difficult.

A hair clip? All of this over a bauble? Maritza opened her mouth for a moment before clamping down on her sharp tongue. Just because her family didn't personally believe in passing down trinkets didn't mean that others didn't and she supposed there could be value in that. Her own children valued the weirdest of things and she would want them to be supported in their 'hour of need'.
"If it's really that important to you then maybe we should go to the guard instead? They can spread word and if those girls are seen wearing it or try to sell it they might be tipped off." It wasn't a fool proof plan, but it had it's merits.
Seeing the way the girl struggled to walk, though, just made Maritza detest Oba more. Why in the world was a child trussed up in that much clothing? "Do you need me to carry you?"

Zuri wiped at here eyes one more time and nodded her head. "I'll go with Mama Cu once I'm home. She's knows some of them." Once her mother talked to them, they would surely try their hardest to get the clip back. She would be able to identify the thieves easily enough as well. The shock stung.. but surely they would get it back for her!
She looked up with a start, and inhaled sharply with a look down at her outfit. The lovely fabrics left a trail in the dirt... the hem was bound to be a little muddy. "N..no. I will be okay. I'm not hurt." After a hesitation, she fiddled with the skirt a little until one of the center layers slipped to the ground. With a relieved sigh, she picked the heavy layer up and held it out. "You could carry this if you would, please."

"Alright; good." Maybe her mother was in good standing with the guard? If anything Maritza could use that to her advantage. She wasn't looking for any sort of reward for helping the woman's daughter, but if she could help in getting her satchel back then Maritza wouldn't turn away the help. Otherwise she was going to be stuck in Oba far longer than she'd hoped.
Seriously? There were more layers to this dress than some of Zadia's journals! Maritza curled her lip at the dirty lump of fabric. "Fine, but answer me this; why all of this? Shouldn't kids wear...I don't know, less?"

Now that she had a little relief and the chance to calm down, Zuri turned her attention to her hair. Her poor curls... She reached up to squeeze out the excess water and combed her fingers through the silky threads. Eyes narrowing with the question, she straightened up again shook her head. "Because I'm a lady. ..And the layers look pretty." She looked down at herself and sighed. "Well, they look pretty when they're not like this." She turned her gaze to look the woman over. "Didn't you have dresses as a young lady?"

"They look heavy and impractical." Maritza groused. She hadn't exactly seen what the girl had looked like before being pushed into the fountain, but she was already getting the impression that she took a lot of pride in her appearance.
"Never." She twisted the fabric and watched as water drained from it as she walked. It would have been easier to get it dry with a proper pressure, but Maritza could only work with what she had. "If your dress is too long it can get snagged, catch fire because of sparks, get locked in a door; they just weigh you down."

Zuri shook her head again. "It's not meant to be practical." she insisted, clearly copying the lesson she had been taught for the wearing of proper attire. She wasn't even one hundred percent certain what being practical was, but it had nothing to do with clothes from what she knew. "And it's not heavy when it's dry. It's not supposed to get wet." She sighed heavily again, utterly disappointed with the state of her appearance...
Still.. she looked the woman over again and managed a smile. "I bet you would look pretty in one." The rest of the walk home wouldn't be long, but she was able to enjoy it by imagining her savior dressed in different fine fabrics and describing her mental creations in detail.

FIN
Clearly. Maritza scrunched her nose as she walked, barely hiding her emotions at all.
"Thanks...? I'll never wear one, but...thank you." It was a kind statement and one she'd never really contemplated before. Maritza hadn't worn a dress since before her children were born and wasn't likely to do so again. Still, she couldn't hide the little quirk of a smile that popped up. It was still nice to be complimented.
Maybe she should buy one before she left Oba just to surprise Uquin? That was if the guard could help her find her things. If they couldn't, well, then she was going to have more problems than shopping.
