He was fully packed for a long journey and was heading out of town when he spotted a familiar looking figure on the trail ahead. He had seen this girl around town but had never gotten a really good chance to talk with her. It seemed like fate had smiled on him today and he stroked his Radaku's ears soothingly.
"Be polite", he admonished the beast. He hadn't made that many friends. He had shared a moment under a celestial shower with a waterling named Umen, and had recieved a discount on his familiar from a friendly water and ice hybrid called Thallassa. He had yet to meet a girl that he could tolerate to be around for more than an hour or two here.

She had to gain some new experience or she felt like she would go stagnant in her training regime. It took a lot for small girls like her to build up enough muscle to keep at the sword as opposed to naturally stronger boys and she was terribly bored with her training so far.
A little adventure aught to do her some good she reasoned so she had packed up for an extended stay out of doors. Muscles would be trained and her mind would be free from that boring little arena for a while.
She heard a noise behind her and whirled to see another earthling dressed for travel with a beautiful radaku by his side. Another for the road it seemed. She wondered if he might fancy a chat.

He must have made a noise because the girl ahead spun around to stare at him and Xerius.
"My apologies for starling you," he had caught up so she could hear him. "I'm just travelling in the same direction, but incidentally I'm at a lack for good conversation, my companion, Xerius, well he doesn't speak much, even less than me if you can believe it."
He hoped to the gods he didn't sound too corny. It would be super nice to have some company on the road.
Besides she was an iceling too, he hadn't gotten to hang out with many from his own tribe since his family disapeared.

"Not a talkative one huh?" The boy seemed friendly enough, nothing in his body posture led her to believe otherwise so she let him catch up and engaged in light conversation with the boy.
At least she wasn't bored.
"Odd to see another iceling around here, what brings you to the sandy coast?"
She was curious, and there was little else to talk about as they meandered down one of the well trodden trails out of town, ignoring the others who ranged about on the road in favor of each other's company. He was about her age by her reckoning. She had gotten permission from her father because he felt she was ready to travel alone. She wondered if he had gotten the same but dared not to ask.

Already with the inquisition, wow. Course what else was there for proper icelings to talk about other then iceling business. The old blood ran thick here, he could tell.
"I was part of a band of traveling merchants, and now my family are missing across the four winds and I have thus far failed to find them." A little heavy perhaps but she had wanted the truth, not a sugar coated, everything is fine lie. He still felt a stab of pain at the mention of his family.
"Periodically I go out looking for them, but I'm based out of our little town."

Her brows furrowed, why was his family targeted in the first place.
"Must have been one hell of a bandit raid." They usually only annilated the ones with the biggest payload, or so her father had told her. He usually acted as a living weapon for such caravans, all he needed was his fists wrapped, which made him extremely efficient and quite popular as a man for hire.
Indeed the boy looked well dressed, but hollow. Sad.
"I'm sorry, I hope you find them."

He could tell she was sincere at least. That was always half the battle with strangers. Learning their specific body cues took time, that was insufficient in most quick encounters. But she stood before him like an open book. Unguarded heart, interesting, he hadn't met many like her, from the shrewd intelligence in her eyes he could tell she was controlling her behavior though.
He wanted to trust her though.
That made the difference.
"Yes it was." Each day that passed discouraged him, but he didn't have to tell her that.
Xerius ambled over to sniff her politely. Raol blinked, the radaku had never been so cordial before. He sighed, he had to trust her now.

"Your not much of a talker are you?" She asked pointedly. "My name is Ristadis, and you are?" She too had seen him around town but had always been busy running errands for her father and sister. Her training regimen had been nothing to sneeze at either.
It didn't look like he would be outhiking her up the trail either. At least not yet.
The radaku came over and she let him sniff her hand before giving him a pet. His body language was easier for her to read than the boy's was. Her sister had seen to it that Rista had had hours of tutelage with beasts.
"Oh he is handsome, where did you get him?"

"From a lad called Thallassa, caught him on the way to market and he offered the beast at a discount because I helped him out a bit." He shrugged. It had been an awfully good day for him and he had recommended the lad's Dad to anyone who had taming issues that he saw.
There were just too few good people out there, like truly good people and not just the general politeness honored by the greater good.
"Wonder what the lad has been up to." he said idly.
He caught sight of her face. "What? Why do you look at me like that?" He was concerned.

She couldn't believe her ears. "Thallassa, that is where you got this radaku." At his affirmative she laughed very hard.
"That happens to be my nephew, I am very glad he made such a good impression and obviously he was right to bond the creature to you. I have never met this one but from his well behaved attitude it is clear that my brother in law has had a go at him."
Oh what a small world it was that this boy had met one of her family members. Well Nin and Kiyelt had taken the whole having kids thing as a challenge and had had quite a few. What a clan.

"Your related?" Well it made sense since Thallassa had been a hybrid, her brother in law had been ...iceling though. He was confused but too afraid to ask at this point in case he accidentally angered her. Things were going so well and if he was lucky he might convince her to be a travel companion. It would be safer in a pair out there, besides he had a guardian. Not many were willing to mess with a full grown well trained radaku after all.
Best purchase he had ever made really.

"Yes he is my adopted sister's son, she married the big iceling that she had apprenticed to when she was younger. Perfect match they are." Besides they had given her the gifts of many nieces and nephews. Whom she absolutely adored.
So far the lad hadn't made a false move and she relaxed slowly.
"Anyway, you uh, want some company on the trail? I hate to admit it but it would be nice to have a companion around if something were to happen out there."
Two heads were better than one.

"Well uh, sure, yeah." He wanted to slap a hand to his forehead for the awkward, casual answer. He had been trying for not caring too much about it, but had come off as kind of a brat, he thought.
"We would be delighted to have you join us." There that was better, kinda fancy but whatever. He was out of practice with the whole chit chat thing. He looked forward to the night time campfire already. He just wanted to relax. Maybe then he wouldn't be so awkward.

Boy was strange but harmless she thought as she ran her finger's through the radaku's fur, it studiously ignored her but sidled its butt closer for scratches.
"Well met beastie, who is a good protector? Yes." She giggled softly.
"Thank you for your gallant escort." She couldn't help but tease him a little.
She knew what it was like to loose your parents. She had lost hers a long time ago. She got the feeling that his had not been gone that long from the haunted look in his eyes.

He blushed hard and vaguely wanted to die. He was such an embarrassment. At least she seemed to have a sense of humor, sharp as it may be.
They rode on for most of the rest of the day in companionable silence. When the sun started leaking form the sky they set about seriously looking for a good camping spot.
There was a lovely open spot by the river with nice round stones to make a firepit. "This will do." He smiled. It was a special skill of his to find the coolest camping spots. He had an eye for it.
