Ristadis 1 Ristadis had been on the road with Raolvar for a while on their impromptu tandem adventure. So much had happened on the way and she had begun quite a strong friendship with her fellow Iceling while he searched still for his family. She just felt more comfortable with a companion on the questionable remote roads were bandits were want to hide and ambush unsuspecting travelers. They were both prentices but there was some safety in numbers in any case.

Raolvar 1 Raolvar patted his radaku's head as they walked behind Rista. They had been traveling for quite some time and he had had his eyes on the surrounding foliage and cliff faces, looking for a comfortable location in which they could set up camp. He was eyeing a promising cliff with a sheltered bottom when his radaku let out a suspicious growl, which was quite quiet but a warning non the less.
He paused and listened but nothing came to him. Eventually the radaku started moving again and Raol wrote of the incident as a wildlife encounter, believing the threat to be gone.

Rista's head snapped around as the growling radaku also caught her attention. "Do you think something is out there?" Her body was on edge ready to fall into combat if need be.
The air seemed sharper as she lay balanced on the balls of her feet, highly alert as her blade instructors had taught her.
The dark was closing in, they were going to be vulnerable. She glared out at the bush, ready to defeat any lingering fear lurking in her spine.
"Raolvar?" she hissed.

"No, I think it was just a critter that he alerted on, he is calm now, the threat if there really was one, must be gone."
He was impressed with her readiness to act though, it seems he had chosen his companion rather well indeed. "Good stance, you look deadly." She would be one day too, he knew, he could see it in her eyes and the determination in her precise movements.
So fierce. He smiled. "Lets make camp under that ridge, its defensible from critters."

She shrugged and just like that lost the aggressive posture like a big cat shaking out its coat after an unsuccessful stalk. No harm no fowl.
They made camp there and stayed up sharing cozy campfire stories and sharing their life woes as long term travellers are want to do at night.
They didn't notice the shady figure sneaking around just out of reach of the senses of the big radaku. The beast would make the task harder but no danger no glory!
Rista rolled over onto her side right away, and concentrated on sleeping before Raol turned in.

Raol stayed up a little later then his female companion. She was shaping up to be a good traveler but sleep was still her only weakness. He couldn't say he blamed her.
Eventually he put the last few logs on the fire and laid a blanket over Xerius, before turning in himself.
He heard a crack in the night and sat bolt upright, an intruder.
"Xerius sick!" he shouted as he reached for his travel knife.
"Fiend!" He screeched and leapt up to race after the figure fleeing from his radaku.

Groggy she seemed to have awoken to chaos, Raol was shouting and the radaku was giving out the distinctive hunting bays.
Gods she was missing all the action! She sprang to her feet and charged after them, kicking her sleeping bag free handily, then swearing when she forgot her weapon, scrambling back and heading out again.
She had lost them thought, she skulked back to camp to guard it. Rawr. She was sooo sleeping in tomorrow.
She perked up when she heard footsteps returning and was greeting by the sight of Raol and Xerius dragging the culprit.
Xerius had a hold of the man's pant leg.
"Thank the gods your back."

"Almost wasn't, thief ran us down a freaking cliff, but we got him. Might be staying here tomorrow but the teeth convinced him that it was in his best interest to come."
"And if ya try it again, I'll let him take a real chunk out of you."
Raol shook the small lad, who seemed to be a pure blood waterling. The kid was small and scrawny, so he was trying not to be too harsh on him. Poor kid looked hungry.
"What did you take?"

She decided to mess with the boy, after all he might go after scarier targets in the future and not be so lucky.
Time for a little good guard bad guard.
"I say we don't release him." She flicked the kid on the forehead. "I say we eat him." She snarled. Winking slyly at Raolvar who was still holding the kid by the collar.
"Little punks don't get to go free." She glared at him intently.
"What did you steal?"

The kid finally turned out his pockets, and he noticed a semi precious stone that his Father had given him when he turned five. He glared and picked it out.
"Why not food, at least there is a good reason for that." He muttered to himself.
Obviously the kid had it hard, but he should be smarter about what he stole.
The kid pointed emphatically at his mouth and Raol felt silly, obviously the kid would eat when he got the change right away, least he loose the food in the chase away.
"Items can be used as barter for food." the kid added.
"If you eat me you will get indegestion." The kid tried to sound really convincing and Raol bit his lip not to laugh.

She gasped as she saw a small doll that had come from her mother, she kept it on her at all times. She had never seen another one like it and it was one of the few items from her parents that she still had.
She reached over and took it. Frowning, she went to her pack and brought out a more modern doll, part of a set that she had been going to give to her sisters kids, this one was going to be for herself but she felt like maybe this child needed it more.
Sighing she placed the new doll back into the pile from his pockets.
"It's too important to me to loose, but you may have that one instead, it will be better luck as it is now a gift." She turned away solemnly, not wanting to show emotion in front of others.

Raol's brows furrowed. So deep down she really had a good heart. Fancy that. It seemed like the item the kid had tried to steal had been quite important to her.
He smacked the kid smartly on the bottom and sent him on his way with the stuff that he had came with.
He fingered the stone in his hands, feeling the rock heat up to his body temperature.
"I'm sorry." He said gently by her shoulder. "I'm glad you got your doll back." He felt bad for her. The perky joy with which she greeted life had faded from her eyes, replaced with solemnity.

"It's okay, no harm no fowl. Its just the only thing I have left of my Mother, that's all. She was a strong, proud woman, who lit up the room when she walked in. I can still remember her laugh but her face is blurred to me now. I lost her too young. She always smelled like sunshine and sand." She sighed, captured by the memories.
She leaned gently into his shoulder so conveniently close by.
"I'll be fine later." Her brows remained furrowed. At least she wasn't alone.

She leaned on him and his eyes widened, what should he do? He froze then slowly relaxed. Maybe nothing was the best answer. He wasn't used to people leaning on him for comfort, he had always sought comfort from his Mother.
He took a deep breath, and slowly wrapped an arm around her shoulders. A hug. A hug felt good. It had been a long time since such a simple gift was given to him.
"I'm sorry." He didn't know what else to say. He took the tumbled stone he had and pressed it into her palm.
