Hobbies:Tennis-- Tobias does not play competitively, but he’s been playing it long enough to be pretty good at it if he does say so himself. He likes to go to the tennis court on weekends and lose himself to endless solo tennis drills. It’s very soothing. He won’t turn down the chance to play against someone, of course, but he hardly finds it necessary.
Astrology-- He’s an Aquarius ascendant, his sun is in Libra, his moon is in Cancer, and his Mercury, Venus, and Mars are in Libra, Leo, and Aries, respectively. It’s not that he uses astrology to make major life decisions or anything, but it’s a lot of fun and he really likes reading up on it. He’s the type of person to know the birth charts of his friends and family, and he occasionally offers a teasing, ‘that’s because your (x) is retrograde,’ if someone is grousing about something minor to him.
Candle-making-- Tobias can carve candles and make very ornate creations out of them. He knows how to make all manners of birds and flowers and graceful arches and other candle wax sculptures. He even sells them sometimes if he feels like it, and occasionally he’s been known to rent a stall at a weekend flea market. He makes them with the intention of them being burned, so the wax layering is done to produce a striking gradient effect when the candle is lit. He will take the odd candle commission or two, but such a thing is generally more effort than he typically feels up to.
Virtues:Gentle-- Tobias is not quite a creampuff, but okay he’s a creampuff. That is, Tobias tends to be naturally easy to get along with, and he adores animals, kids, and small fluffy cute things. This even extends to older kids and adults, where Tobias is naturally sympathetic to people with anxiety or similar difficulties. He seems to make “do no harm” an inherent life philosophy. If he has to set aside this gentleness, he will, but he won’t really be happy about it. He would prefer to talk to somebody about a problem rather than take it to blows.
Curious-- (
Look at that, look at that, look at that…) He wants to know everything there is to know about everything. Tobias doesn’t like to be nosy, so he moderates himself accordingly, but he does actually want to know where you went, what you did, did you have fun, what is that, what does it do, etc.. If there’s a problem, he wants to go find out the answer to it, sometimes just for the sake of the knowledge itself. This gives him a range of minor practical skills, the sort of thing you can do with a screwdriver and Google.
Strong-willed-- Tobias is gentle, but he’s not easy to walk all over. If he doesn’t like what’s going on, he will absolutely put a stop to it, and he can be difficult to persuade to courses of action he doesn’t agree with. He’s difficult to manipulate and has a strong sense of self. That’s not to say he hasn’t been pressured into things before, or never had a moment of doubt, but Tobias generally stays pretty steady in his course of action.
Flaws:Workaholic-- Tobias’ strong sense of ethics can turn around and bite him most capriciously when it turns into him refusing to leave a project/task alone until it is done and done well. While he does not quite ‘live to work’, Tobias will devote time and energy to obligations and the like well beyond what is typically considered “healthy”. A bookstore job doesn’t require much work/life balance, but there are some times he seems to study endlessly. It’s fortunate those close to him generally know how to coax him away from the desk for five minutes, but left alone, Tobias will forget to sleep and eat.
Questions Authority-- Tobias is gentle, and he is dependable, but he sees nothing wrong with his strong will evaluating a command and simply asking, “why?”. While he is not insubordinate, he does require justification that someone has the ability to demand anything in the first place. Even if someone has that ability but what they ask is outside of what he perceives their scope to be, he will ask, “why?”. He may even outright refuse to do it. This less sociable side of his strong will means he can sometimes trade dependability for intractableness. Surely, it does not tend to win him many friends when it does crop up, though he always stops short of asking who the person thinks they are.
Sensitive-- The downside to his gentleness, Tobias is acutely aware of people around him to where he can be put on edge if someone near him is being perhaps a bit too demonstrative in their irritation. Wanting to help someone having a problem can become a distracting, consuming issue for him without too much difficulty. He has to be reminded that he doesn’t have to make other people’s problems his own, much less accept responsibility for the problem in the first place when it was nowhere near his fault.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION
Eyes: light amber, wide and tapered
Hair: wavy, a bit messy (especially when it’s humid), kept in a puffy ponytail at the back of his head (if it’s very humid, the ponytail is very puffy)
Face: He has a firm jawline and dark warm brown skin with freckling (though the freckles are hard to see if he’s been outside a lot recently), showing his mix of Armenian and Costa Rican heritage in his bone structure, strong, broad nose, and full lips
Skin Tone: warm brown
Body Type: Tobias is tall-ish (6’1”) and of average build. He's active, but not particularly muscular.
Clothes: He wears slacks and a business-casual button down when at work at a family-owned bookstore in downtown. Otherwise, he goes for comfort, opting for a shorts-and-t-shirt look whenever possible. He has no colour preferences, and fully half of his wardrobe has come from the thrift store. He tends to be rough on his clothing anyway and doesn’t see the point in investing a lot of money in his attire beyond one or two outfits for Special Occasions™.
