An RP between Nilah and Sabra via discord
Nicias couldn't help but look outside to see the sun finally starting to lower in the sky. It meant a couple of things to the young prentice: first was that it was nearly time to finish both his work and school work and second that he was going to be meeting up with Reina soon. He didn't really have to do any work today as most of Oba, and probably all of Tendaji, were celebrating the summer festivals for the gods. Nic found it hard to not do something work related during the day so he at least regulated himself to half days on holidays. He organized the papers he had been working on and grabbed the basket he had the kitchen staff prepare earlier and went to meet her at the little pool they had found when they were younger. If he remembered correctly, he thought she was going to be with Varinia helping her mother get ready for their own festivities so he was looking forward to stealing a bit of her time. [Nicias 1]

Sabra via discord Reina was whisked this and that way for the last few days while preparing for the festivities. While her family mostly enjoyed the events rather than planning them the girl had somehow gotten talked into helping others in the palace set up for the occassion. The hallways had to be decorated, the proper dishes picked out and washed, the type of snacks the royal family would prefer...all sorts of things that just made her question the importance of everything. Reina felt a bit flustered as she glanced over two sets of crimson silks, both basically the same shade in her honest opinion with the faintest difference in golden threading along the edges. "Is this really such a different color?" She quipped before finally picking out the left one as the seamstress thanked her for her opinions. Thankfully she had at least one thing to look forward to before the festivities tonight and that was what pushed Reina to bolt whenever the palace staff turned their backs from her. No more helping, sorry! She had plans already!
Slipping into a comfortable silk tunic and leggings, Reina sneaked out through the gardens and towards a familiar spot from her childhood. It was strange going out the way that she once had used when now she could more easily just walk in and out of the main gates, but Reina enjoyed the secrecy it gave her today. "Nicias?" She found herself whispering as she twisted through the tight passages and finally emerged in the ruins hidden within the capital, the pool of gleaming water greeting here as if she had only come here just yesterday.

He laughed softly as he heard Reina's voice whispering from the old entrance they used. "You should know there's not going to be anybody else here but me. It's our place, those who do know about it know to not come here." Nic had taken the newer path here so his walk had been short and easy compared to the old path they had discovered as kids. "Come, I brought some lunch. Did Varinia keep you very busy?" He asked as he started setting out numerous sandwiches and dried goods on a blanket he had spread out by the pool that had seemed much bigger when he was a child. It seemed like it wa s forever ago that they had last come out here even though it had been a favorite place of theirs when they were little. [Nicias 2]

Reina pouted. "That ruins the fun though." She replied as she emerged from the shadows. The years had made it a bit tighter to squeeze through, her older body showing more curves as she matured, but still she emerged without much issue. Flicking her heavy braid over a shoulder, Reina moved forward and slipped onto the ground near Nicias. The teen didn't even hesitate as she slipped off her shoes and placed her feet into the pool with a sigh. After being on her feet so much the past few days the cool waters felt amazing against her flushed skin. "She did and so did half of the palace staff." Admitted Reina with a chuckle. "Do you think the other countries go to such extensive measures to celebrate summer?" How demanding were the gods of Sauti or Tale in comparison to Matori and Oba? "How about you? I feel like it's been ages since we spoke." She was mostly teasing but their visits seemingly had gotten fewer with the increase of studies for both of them keeping them too busy for such meetings.

Nic wasted no time in handing her the sandwich she liked best. "You know you don't have to indulge them right? Just because Varinia works for my Mom doesn't mean that they get to tell you what to do." She could just as easily tell them to shove it and be on with what she wants to do instead of helping them. Some people would take advantage of everyone if they could. And unfortunately, being as close to the royal family as she was, Nicias worried about Reina. "From what I've heard and read, many of the other countries have some kind of religious beliefs though maybe not everyone holds their deities as highly as we do." He took a few bites of his sandwich while he thought of her second question. "You know I prefer to be busy and don't mind the book work so that has been for me, though I do agree that it does seem like it's been awhile since we've been able to get away from it all. Perhaps its these moments that make me okay with doing all the book work." Nic knew he would rather be spending time with her while doing his work but sometimes they were two different people. He didn't mind being inside and working with letters and numbers but knew Reina often enjoyed being outdoors and active. Perhaps they should go out to the family's compound and see how the business is doing....that was an idea. [Nicias 3]

"Yes, but..." Reina hesitated before just letting out a soft sigh. "It's easier to make peace if at least the staff appreciate me." Even if most of the nobles were too uppity to bother with her, mostly the girls her age honestly, at least Reina knew she could connect with the workers at the palace. It was nice to know that there were some who had a good opinion of her within the palace walls. Even if it shouldn't bother me. Ever since the trick though Reina had been more cautious and more willing to work around certain obstacles as to not worry Nicias. He already had so much on his plate that she refused to burden him with what felt like silly, small matters. "I see. Maybe next year I'll ask about traveling so that I can experience a festival in Tale or something." She chewed on her sandwich, savoring every bite before she nodded as if actually interested by the idea. "I can bring back some treats or something to share with you." And hopefully some stories about the foreign gods and customs!
"You're being sentimental." Teased Reina as she listened to her friend, a slight flush decorating her cheeks. "It's the sandwiches, right? I know that getting to eat them is a nice break from those fancier meals at the grand hall." She couldn't even imagine the upset some of the cooks would have if they served something so simple to guests! The very thought both amused and frustrated Reina who had been dealing with etiquette lessons lately, another thing to wear her down with her studies.

He could understand that. He and his parents often had to do many things to appease people just to make it easier to work with them and keep the peace. It didn't mean it was always fun but it was what they had to do. "You want to travel?" He asked. A little bit of surprise in his voice. It was something he had thought about as well but wasn't sure if it was really possible or not. "It's honestly something I've been thinking on also but I wasn't sure if it would be a possibility for me. But, if there's anything I can do to help you be able to go out and see the world, just let me know, hmm?" He raised his eyebrows at her in question.
Nic couldn't help but laugh. "Maybe I am being a little sentimental. But things were different thing, there wasn't so much pressure. The world seemed bigger and smaller at the same time. Like today for example, I was able to just enjoy the festivals and give thanks to the gods when I was younger. Now I have to be worried about if I've pleased the gods or not." [Nicias 4]

Reina's expression shifted and she studied Nicias thoughtfully. "I can only dare to imagine the pressures you must be feeling. If it helps I do believe you're doing a great job so any displeased gods must surely be blind. She offered with a small grin. "It would be a shame for some heavenly beings to miss that. The girl placed down the remnants of her sandwich and glanced back towards the water. It was true though that they were innocent younglings who could just play around like before. Even if Reina didn't have the same pressures as Nicias there still felt like a weight was slowly being added to her shoulders as more years passed. So much for a carefree afternoon. She silently quipped before thinking about traveling again.
But yes I was thinking about traveling. Nothing too crazy of course since I don't like being away from Oba for too long but maybe the neighboring countries at least. You know me, I'm a much more hands on learner than a reader. She wanted to learn more about the world but just reading texts didn't feel like enough for her. How could she truly know their lives without experiencing it for herself?

He smiled softly at h er, sometimes she knew just what to say to cheer him up about things. "I think that would be good. My mom used to tell me about the little bit of time that she spent outside of Oba, though it wasn't necessarily her decision...She said it helped her learn a lot about the other people. Granted this was before the war was over so the knowledge was a lot more important then though I imagine it would still be good just to know from personal experience other than just hearing what everyone else has said." Perhaps he would have to talk to his mom about having Reina travel some, he could tell it would mean a lot to her to be able to go. Some people often felt trapped when they couldn't go anywhere. He wasn't quite like that but he did sort of want the experience of being able to ask the questions himself instead of just reading about it. [Nicias 5]

"Thanks for the permission." Teased Reina as she finished her sandwich. "In all honesty though since I'm not caught up in any official duties just yet..." Her voice trailed off as she pondered that very idea. Her mother was a personal guard so was that also going to be her path? To just shadow Nicias like a shield from any danger? Reina chewed on the inside of her cheek as she thought about it. It would then be best to just leave for a short couple of weeks so that she could come back and pick up actual duties soon. Her training was already picking up with all of the tutors and what not. Part of her was jealous that her sister seemed to be more carefree but another part of her was content with things, especially when she looked at Nicias and realized how great of a friend she had at her side.
"I do think it would be a great way to learn about other cultures, if that would be acceptable for my family and others." She finished with a small shrug. "As it is we should be focused on enjoying our festivities to our gods, right? I'll learn more about foreign gods later but maybe it's a bit rude to think about them during our actual summer festivities." She glanced back towards Nicias with a grin. "So any more plans for tonight or is it to simply enjoy sandwiches and maybe light some incense for the celebrations?" They said the fragrant smoke was a way of offering thanks to On'os for his good fortune after all.

Nicias laughed once more with a slight roll of his eyes. He thought it must be nice to not have any official duties though he knew she was also in various studies and training as he was, she did have a certain amount of freedom that he would likely never have. "You're probably right." He supposed they should be focusing on their own gods. "I'm sure there are some official alters as usual that I will probably have to visit tonight before the meal that's being prepared. I don't think I have to prepare any special offerings this time. But if you would like to come with me I would appreciate the company as always." Even if she wasn't gung ho to visit the shrines he could often tempt her with some good food. With as much as the two of them worked out and trained, they could often indulge when there were the large feasts prepared. [Nicias 6]

"Ah, that's right." Reina pursed her lips before slowly nodding. "I should have known you needed to do things like that." How could she forget? They weren't younglings running about the place freely anymore and even then Nicias still had to separate from her to do things with his family. The teen shifted so that she could wiggle her bare feet in the cool waters. "We should go swimming in the ocean one day too...if we ever can travel." She mused before glancing back towards Nicias. "But for now we definitely should celebrate the gods so that they don't smite us." She teased lightly. "I suppose that means I should tag along when you're ready to leave for the shrines."

He tilted his head at her and mentally added 'swim in the sea' to his list of things to try and do someday. "We can probably come back afterwards for a night swim. As long as were not too disruptive I can't imagine it would be a problem. But you're right. We should get back and get things done before it gets too much later. I'll walk you back and then we can meet back up in about an hour?" That should give them plenty of time to change and prepare anything for this evening if they needed to. [Nicias 7]

Reina nodded. "Sounds like a good plan to me." She reluctantly removed her feet from the waters so that she could put her shoes back on. "It'll probably take that long just to get into my festival attire." She joked before finally standing with a yawn. Dressing up was most definitely not her forte but her recent tutor had insisted upon her wearing the most recent styles to match the other nobles around the palace. She supposed it would only be fitting to dress nicely for the festivities so that she could match with Nicias. Even if she was in the background it would be best to try and blend in as much as possible with everyone else. At least the food would be good! Reina chuckled at the thought before turning and brushing past Nicias, her hip giving him a slightly playful bump as she walked along. "See you in a bit~"
