It felt good to be out busking again. Rob hadn't gone out to play for spare change since he returned from London, now several weeks ago, and truth be told he missed it. The taste of performing for an audience he'd gotten while performing with the most recent incarnation of his old Celtic-fey-punk band still resonated through him; he was thoroughly addicted to making people respond viscerally to his music. Didn't matter the size of the audience, either -- busking for passers-by or playing a show for a couple hundred. Music was his meat and milk, his heart and soul. He physically ached when he wasn't making music.

Luckily for him, his old corner spot next to a coffee shop near the DCU campus hadn't been snaked from beneath him. A good spot -- he'd made good money here before.

By now his guitar case was filled with close to a hundred bucks after several hours' playing, and as the latest group of people who had stopped to listen dispersed, he decided it was time for a small break. Setting down his guitar, he picked up his large water bottle and took a good long drink; his throat was going a bit sore from singing and he didn't want to lose his voice before he was done for the day. There was an easy solution to that, though: his pennywhistle didn't require him to sing!

Rob set down the bottle and pulled the small tin whistle out of his back pocket. Setting it to his lips, he began to play one of his band's songs, a take on an old English folk tune. He threw in his customary flourishes as he played and bobbed back and forth, then stopped and sang a verse before resuming his fluting. As he played, he could see people stopping to listen. Yeah, this was going to be a good day.

The best thing about freelancing was the flexibility it provided. When the weather turned, there was nothing to stop Sadie from packing up her laptop and claiming an outdoor cafe table for a few hours while she worked on client emails and attempted some financial paperwork. It was warm now but the bugs weren’t out so much yet, and the flowers were on the trees. Of course she wanted to be outside. She nursed a few hot teas. She enjoyed the feeding of the sunshine on her cheeks and the wind making her long skirt flutter.

She managed to do some of her work.

When it was time for a break, it was easy to pay for this drinks, slip the computer back into that bag, and start walking. She found herself making her way towards the sound of a tune. Someone had been singing in the distance since she’d arrived, and that was more than enough to get her curious.

Sadie had a soft spot for street music, even if it was the same covers of what was on the radio anyway. This seemed different, though, and that was even nicer. The whistle especially brought a smile to her face.

He was right around the corner, not hard to find at all. Sadie was quick to slip a few dollars into his case. He’d earned that much, giving her something to listen to. She gave a little nod and then stepped back to hover a few feet away. She kept her face tilted away out of habit, but she watched him from the corner of her good eye.

Of all the people who were beginning to mill about as he played away on his tin whistle, Rob only really noticed the seemingly shy girl with long snow-white hair. He nodded and winked at her as she tossed a few bucks into his guitar case and stepped back to listen. She was striking in appearance, and quite pretty, watching him out of the corner of one eye. Even with such a sideways gaze, he could tell she was enjoying his music, and he added a few more flourishes before singing another verse directly to her.

He finished the song on his pennywhistle and bowed from his stool as the small crowd applauded. Now he would allow himself a break. Reaching for his water bottle again, he turned to the girl and gave her a warm smile. "Cheers, love," he thanked her for the donation in as British a way as he could (he knew these Americans loved an English accent), then took a deep drink of water before offering her his hand. "I'm Rob Anybody, recently of London, England. Hope you liked my little tune."

He was looking at her while he sang a little, and Sadie wasn't sure why There were others around, and she wasn't doing anything differently than they were. Of course, she was used to getting looks and stares now and then for the scars, but this wasn't like that.

She sort of nodded at him with a soft, unsure, smile.

She loved the music, though. It was folksy and sweet, the kind of song that made her feel that she was somewhere on the other side of the world, which had always been her favorite. From her odd angle, she watched his fingers fly across the holes as best she could. She had some idea of the kind of skill that took, and it was easy to smile at that.

When he came up to her afterwards, she hesitated for a moment before looking into his eyes, because there was really no getting around it at this point without seeming terribly rude.

"Cheers, yourself," she said, her voice quiet and her accent distinctly American. She lit up a little when he mentioned the music, though. "Oh, it was lovely! I always liked watching tin whistle videos on YouTube, but I don't think I've ever seen one in real life before, and then you're even better then most of them." Her smile widened. "The people online, I mean."

She did eventually take his hand, remembering her manners. "I'm Sadie," she said. "Nice to meet you, Rob."

"The pleasure's all mine, Sadie," Rob smiled back, bowing slightly and giving her hand a squeeze before releasing it. He barely noticed the girl's ruined eye and the scars on her face; the rest of her face was quite pretty and more than made up for it, shining with a shy brightness.

"Thank you for the compliment! I've been making music most of my life -- guess that's what I get for having a music teacher for a mum," he grinned. "I'm glad you like my tootlin'." Rob put the pennywhistle up to his lips again and played a quick little lilting phrase. "Tin whistle's pretty easy to learn, actually. Did you ever play recorder in school? It's like that, only less… round, I guess? The sound's sharper 'cause it's made of metal, not wood."

Reaching into the back pocket of his jeans, he pulled out another pennywhistle. "I always keep two around, in different tunings. Do you want to give it a go?" he asked, holding out the small instrument toward her.

He was all sunshine and swagger, even as he talked to her instead of playing on his whistle, and that was enough to get some of the anxiety to ease from Sadie's shoulders.

"Oh, I played the actual flute for all of a semester in middle school," she said as he pulled out another tin whistle. "But I didn't really get into music until a few years ago, when I found out that you can play Lord of the Rings music instead of just constant, overwhelming repeats of Ode to Joy."

There had been other reasons, yes, but the music she'd found had piqued her interest in its own way, and it had her playing for herself at times instead of just practicing the song that was connected to her Knight magic.

She flashed another shy smile as she took the took the whistle in one hand and turned it over. It was feather-light, but solid enough, and it didn't take Sadie long at all to adjust and put her fingers over the holes. "I always thought these looked a little intimidating," she said. "Um, fiddly or something? Then again, I have pendant ocarinas, so it shouldn't be worse than that."

Looking over to him for assurance, she blew an experimental note.

"No," Rob chuckled, utterly charmed by her smile. "They're not as bad as ocarinas. They're not even as bad as flutes. But since you played flute, you should be able to get this easily enough."

He nodded approvingly as Sadie tried her hand at playing a note on the pennywhistle. "Good, good! See, it's just that easy. Fingering goes like this, look." Rob put his pennywhistle to his lips and played a simple scale, at a steady beat so she could follow. He was nothing if not his music teacher mother's son. "See, just like flutes, except long-ways instead of sideways. Don't concern yourself that your whistle sounds different than mine, they're tuned in different keys; mine's in G, yours is in D. Fingering's the same for both."

Playing through the scale a bit faster, he added a little flourish at the end. "Go on, love, give it a go," he encouraged with a warm grin. "I won't make you play Ode to Joy…"

"Ocarinas aren't bad," said Sadie, soft as soft, brows inching together in a way that was almost defensive. "I could maybe call kalimbas bad, if I had to pick something. I had blisters on my thumbs for a week after I bought one, but then, the sound's so fairytale delicate that of course I forgive everything."

Her gaze drifted off towards the distance, and she smiled a little just thinking about it. Rob's playing brought her back, and she watched him, then, following along with the scale. He was right that the fingering was about as simple as it got, and similar to the flute from all those years ago. She tilted her head in amusement at the Ode to Joy comment, not having the heart to tell him that with all the scales and handing out instruments, he was already the picture of a middle school music teacher.

Carefully, eyes narrowed in concentration, she whistled the first phrase of Concerning Hobbits. It wasn't perfect. The breath on this was different than her ocarinas, she could already tell, but she was happy with her first try and gave a satisfied nod.

Then, all at once, she gave a concerned look to the case of donations, brows really scrunching now.

"Maybe I shouldn't play so much here, though," she said. "Not on this. People will think I'm supposed to be good."

"But that was quite good for playing an instrument you've never played before!" Rob smiled in encouragement. "Don't let what people think affect what you do, love. If you do that, you end up never doing anything else."

As if to prove the point, he started playing a lively Irish reel, throwing in flourishes and rolls and bobbing about animatedly as he played. Before too long a small crowd had started to gather, bobbing back and forth to the music. Rob played through the song twice, then stopped to loudly sing a verse from an old folk song, a grin in his raspy punk-singer voice; he knew he wasn't the best singer in the world, but who cared, he was having fun. He put the pennywhistle back to his lips and went into a second reel in the same key, which he also played through twice before finishing up with a dramatic flourish.

The people listening to him applauded, tossing money into his guitar case and a couple picking up one of his CDs. "Thank you, thank you," he grinned as the crowd dispersed. Turning to Sadie, he gave her a wink. "See? I don't care what they think. Free yourself from that, and they'll be cheering you on. Because they don't care if you're perfect, see -- they want to see you succeed. They'll applaud you for making it through. And they'll know it was genuine, like from the heart." Smiling warmly at her, Rob patted himself on the chest. "You follow?"

Rob had all the confidence in the world, that much was clear. It was true that it was part of what had drawn Sadie over to watch him in the first place, and it kept her eyes on him while he went off to play another set.

It was also clearly not his first time touching a whistle, or singing, or doing anything like that. He had the talents to back up all that swagger, and the combination was what drew people over, not one or the other. The music was lovely, of course, and Sadie was all enraptured again, tapping her fingers against her leg to the beat, and softly smiling at him the whole time.

When the song wound down, he went to sell people CDs. Sadie smiled at that. Yes, this one was a professional. Still, the way he talked to her had her feeling a little more confident than she might have otherwise, and while he dealt with all that, she went to dig into her bag.

She pulled out an ocarina, not the nicest she owned, but the one that she kept with her portable things, and one that she knew how to play. The tin whistle was set aside for the moment as Rob came back to her.

"I follow, I think," she said. He wanted her to succeed, she could see it in his eyes, and that was enough to make her want to try. He wanted her to succeed. She could see it in his eyes, and that was enough to make her want to try, even though a few passerbys still lingered, glancing at the instrument she'd pulled out. "Just, let me show you what I can really do, okay?"

Then she closed her eyes and let herself get lost in her own music. She played Lord of the Rings since it was on her mind, a medley this time. It was slower than what he'd played on the whistle, and softer, something more fitting for the ocarina's richer tone, but she added a flourish or two of her own. Her eyes stayed closed until she was finished. It was easier if she didn't think about everywhere nearby.

When she finished, she looked straight to Rob, and her smile was small but proud.

Rob listened quietly while Sadie played her ocarina, a small encouraging smile on his face. He recognized the music from Lord of the Rings, and watched the confidence with which she played, eyes closed and lost in the medley. The dreadlocked man knew nothing about her, really, but he knew a fellow musician when he saw (or heard) one, and Sadie was definitely a musician in her soul, regardless of whether or not she believed she was a musician herself or not.

When she finished, Rob's smile widened. "That… was amazing," he said, and he clapped his hands in appreciation. As he started to applaud, the few others who were standing and listening applauded her too. "That was lovely, truly lovely. You're very good at that, Sadie. Here I am trying to offer encouragement, and you already have that down," he laughed. "The teacher teaching the master."

The crowd began to disperse again, and he looked around. "Looks like things are quieting down for the day. Pretty soon it'll be all hustle and bustle and people heading home and there's no use busking in that," he shrugged. "Not when they have places to be. Best be packing up then." Tucking away his pennywhistle in his hip pocket, he began to clear out his guitar case of money and unsold CDs, tucking the lot in a small backpack that had been supporting the lid of the guitar case.

"Would you maybe like to get a cup of coffee or tea or whatever?" he asked, cocking his head with a warm, hopeful smile. "Coffee shop's right here and all, and we could carry on talking about music…"

The applause hadn't been expected, and a rosy blush crept across Sadie's cheeks. She turned towards the small group of onlookers and gave a few little, appreciative nods without ever looking any of them in the face.

Then she looked back to Rob, smile slowly widening. "Oh, um, thank you," she said. "I'm glad you think so. I'm glad you liked it. You deserve to listen to lovely things, too, sometimes."

It wasn't as if there was a shortage of music in the world, or even live music in a place as bustling as Destiny City, but her song had been enough to make him smile, and she found herself holding on to that fact.

Then he was packing up, all quick and practiced, before she'd even thought to ask to buy a CD. That was okay, though. She could always come back to work here some other day, and see if he'd be playing on the corner again.

Or, maybe, she could go to the cafe with him, now. She blinked at the offer, but then nodded and nodded again. "That sounds lovely," she said, soft as ever. "I like tea, and I like you."

She blinked at the brick wall as she turned back towards the building, wondering if that was too forward or could be taken weirdly, but the words were already out of her mouth, and Rob didn't seem so easy to scare off.

She walked down the rest of the sidewalk silently, and when she reached the entrance, she held the door for him.

If the applause for Sadie's ocarina tune wasn't expected, neither was her telling Rob that he deserved to listen to lovely things himself. He processed that, or tried to, as he finished packing up his gear: guitar in the guitar case, CDs and money into his backpack, pennywhistles in his hip pocket (because one never knew when one might want to play). It never really occurred to him, as a musician, to think about what he might like to listen to; he was always so busy making his own music that the notion of listening to music for pure enjoyment or pleasure simply didn't register. He was glad that Sadie played her ocarina for him (well, for herself, but at least a little bit for him) -- he had really enjoyed it. Rob smiled at that; she was quite good, actually.

Then it was time for another thing to process as she not only acquiesced to going to get tea with him, but said she liked him. That actually made his smile widen. Not only had he brought some joy to her day, he'd apparently made a friend in the process. A very pretty friend whom he wanted to get to know better.

Straightening with his gear in both hands, he nodded as she held the door open for him. "Thanks," he said, shouldering the door for her. "I like you as well, Sadie. I'll be happy to pay for your tea with some of the day's earnings. Is that okay?"

Sadie stayed in the door until it was clear that Rob could make it inside even with his arms full of guitar case. "I won't say no to free tea," she said, still smiling, as she finally moved farther inside to go sit at the counter.

Maybe it didn't really count as free, if she'd given him money a few minutes ago. Maybe it was more like things coming full circle.

Either way, she didn't waste any time giving a small nod to a barista and then ordering something iced, with lemon and raspberry in it.

Then she turned back to Rob. Most of the tension that she'd carried while out in the street among strangers was gone now. She worked here often enough that she'd met the staff, and it wasn't early or late enough for a deluge of college students to come in, seeking caffeine. Now she leaned over with an elbow on the counter while she lazily brushed a stray curl from her good eye.

"Um, you said you're from London, didn't you?" she asked, although the accent was answer enough that he wasn't local. "What brings you to the States?"

Rob saddled up on a stool next to Sadie at the counter, parking his guitar case and backpack in front of him. "Tea please, hot and black, with cream on the side," he ordered, then turned to Sadie with a smile. "Yep, London born and bred, from the heart of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea," he replied. "Mum's a music professor, as I said, and Dad's a doctor. Dad took a job here in Destiny City when I was 19. Didn't have any prospects in London, so here I am."

His tea arrived, and he allowed it to steep, taking a spoon and stirring the hot dark liquid. "Had the whole nanny and private boys' school thing growing up. If you don't know London, Kensington's one of the posh boroughs -- all lunch at Marks & Spence and spoiled rich girls and High Street shopping." His accent shifted a little as he mimicked that of the wealthy borough. "But I fell into punk and folk music early on, and that's why I play what I do," he grinned. "Not a typical background for a busker, is it?"

Once his tea was sufficiently brewed, he added the cream and a spoon of sugar to it. "What about you?" he asked Sadie. "Are you from Destiny City?"
