Another year has passed in Tendaji, meaning a new opportunity for the residents to accomplish their goals and dreams. Typically, this is a time for setting promises to oneself and others on what to do in the year ahead. There are many different superstitions on how to make a New Year's Wish: some toss their written wishes into the sea, others will burn them at a shrine, and even more will whisper them to representatives of the gods.

No matter how one goes about doing it, all will take the time to ensure that their wishes and promises have the best chance to come true in the New Year.

[ What is your character's promise for the New Year? Go about their practice of setting their goals and dreams in the way they feel is most important. Maybe they go to the shrines, or wish under a star, or honor the god(s) they follow. The goal of this World Event is to make a wish for the next year however your character chooses fit. ]

With the passing of a new year came a new sense of self for Finn. He'd gone from a feral creature fit only for eeking out a living in the most barren of fighting pits to a sorcerer's apprentice and a stable hand. His body, while still terribly scarred and small, was no longer emaciated. While still thin his spine wasn't nearly as visible and his cheeks weren't nearly so gaunt. Without the constant threat of death looming over him he'd been allowed to think of other things, his studies being one of them, and...stranger activities as well.

That night he hadn't gotten much sleep. As tempted as Finn was to ask Tac what exactly a 'date' entailed he also didn't want his brother to know anything about it. What if it was just something he was supposed to know already?

So, he'd gone about his day as usual and when the time came Finn waited, just under the light of a freshly lit street torch, for Ilkay to arrive.

Ilkay had been pleased that Finn had agreed to go on a date with him, even though he was about ninety-eight percent sure the poor guy didn't know what it meant. He'd spent the day preparing for it. As the time got closer for him to meet Finn he made his way there.

Not too much longer after Finn had gotten there Ilkay arrived as well. He smiled at the guy. "Hello Finn." In his hand he had a small bunch of bright colored flowers that he held out for Finn to take. Mostly because he wanted to see what his date did with them. "These are for you." Since the rule had been set that he wasn't allowed to touch Finn he couldn't hug him or give him a kiss in greeting. He had to admit, this was going to be a challenging date.

As curious as Finn was about how all of this was going to go down a part of him had been hoping that Ilkay wouldn't show up. If he didn't then Finn could just scrap the whole concept and retreat to the apartment he shared with his brother. Their little Oban hideaway was just fine the way it was; stuck in a routine after so much strife over the years.

"Alright..." Finn cautiously picked up the bright little bouquet and awkwardly held them at his side. Was he supposed to bring a gift? "Are they poisoned?" That was the only reason Finn could imagine someone would hand a dead plant over to someone else. "Or am I supposed to do something with them?" He turned them over in his arm, then furrowed his brow a little and sniffed them. "...they do smell nice though."

Ilkay chuckled a bit. "No, Finn, they aren't poisoned. I thought you might enjoy them." The questions alone told him that no one had ever given him such a thing before and he clearly hadn't given flowers to someone else. "You can put them in a vase to admire for a few days or if you want to keep them for longer you can press them in a book." His mother had pressed a few flowers to keep when he was younger.

"Are you ready to go?" Ilkay had plans to take him to a nice restaurant he knew of. It wasn't super fancy but the food was good. It would also give him a chance to talk with Finn. He held his hand out for his date to take while the other motioned the direction they were going to go. "I'd like to hold your hand but if not then we're going this way."

A vase he understood, but pressing them in a book? Why would anyone-? Finn shook that thought out of his mind. If he spent enough time thinking over everything Ilkay said he would go mad within the hour. "Wait." Finn held his hand up, seemingly to halt Ilkay from coming closer, but instead he slowly twisted his palm and pulled particles of water from the air around them. Slowly the water began to swirl, then to form a tight coil that eventually spread out into a liquid flower. Just as quickly as it had formed the flower started to harden, freezing to the touch, until it was as solid as crystal itself. "It's not as good as a real one, but it lasts longer. Just...don't press it."

There was absolutely no part of Finn that wanted to hold his hand. He'd meant the threat, as ardently as any threat he'd ever made, but did he take it? Yes. And why? Because like the little gremlin he was Finn had heard the word 'food' and fell in like like a trained dog.

He watched with fascination as Finn worked some magic and formed a flower. His brows rose and he let out a low whistle. "Impressive." He took it of course. Who wouldn't? "I feel like my flowers are nothing compared to this. Thank you Finn." Ilkay was going to keep it for a very long time as a treasured item.

He was glad that his date took his hand but also surprised. With a charming smile in place he led the way. "I hope you are hungry." The place he had in mind wasn't that far away either so it took less than five minutes to get there. Compliments were given to Finn along the way even if they went over his head.

When they arrived he smiled at his date. "Here we are." He motioned with one hand and let go of Finn's hand with the other.

"I'm always hungry." Finn said it with such deadly seriousness that his eyes ceased to blink for a while. There would never be a time in his life that he wasn't excited for food; no matter how well fed he may have been at the moment. Living with Tac may have meant he never went to bed hungry anymore, but the mental compulsion to eat was still there. It was what pushed him through the anxiety over this evening and kept him somewhat sociable around strangers.

The whole ordeal just felt strange. He'd never been given a compliment before, let alone so many, so they just sounded fake to him. Was he...supposed to say them back? Finn talked a little, though not nearly as much as Ilkay, but every time he thought of something 'nice' to say he held off.

When they made it to the restaurant Finn habitually brushed off his clothing and stood a little straighter. "How does this work? Do we pay them first or...?"

He watched Finn brush off his clothes and stand a little straighter and found it kinda cute that he did such a thing. So with a smile Ilkay motioned for his date to go in first. "I will take care of that later. We are to focus on eating and enjoying ourselves." He wasn't going to tell Finn that he knew the owner and was owed a favor for defending their son in a brutal fight.

"I'd also like to know what brings you to Oba, among other things about you." Ilkay couldn't help that Finn intrigued him.

The only time Finn had ever actually been inside of a restaurant was when he was being chased out the back. To be encouraged to go inside like a guest was a novel experience and one he didn't take lightly. When he was greeted warmly at the door then showed to their seats he braced himself for the worst, and was...pleasantly confused when it didn't happen.

When he sat down Finn lifted his hair and brought it over his shoulder so that he wouldn't be sitting on it. "Not much to tell. I came to Oba because tickets were cheap and it was the first ship leaving Yael." He may have very well have ended up in Matori for all he'd cared. Any place was better than Yael. "Started working in The Pit, met my brother again and now I'm staying with him while I study." While The Pit may not have been as well known to normal folk anyone who was anyone in the fighting underbelly of Oba knew of it. It was a fighting ring stationed in an old manor home on the outskirts of Sulburi that was known for it's brutality.

"What about you? Don't see many looking like you around here."

As they were seated he watched Finn for his responses. Ilkay wasn't bored in doing so either. He offered a smile and aptly listened to his date tell him the tale of leaving Yael. "Huh, didn't want to stay in Yael I take it." He could slightly understand why. Everything he'd heard about the place said it was full of superstitious brats.

As Finn mentioned working in The Pit it made Ilkay's brow lift some. "Oh? Been there a time or two myself." Ilkay mostly fought at the fighters guild for legal reasons but he wasn't blind to the underground fight rings. If he thought they might be staying in one place for longer than a few months he might try to actually become a fighter in one but as it stood he didn't have the time to show he was trustworthy. "It's nice of your brother to let you stay. I have a little brother myself. Thankfully our parents provide us a home for now." And Ilkay loved his little brother quite a bit. Most of the fights he got into were to keep others from hurting Koray's feelings.

"Ah, I'm just a traveling mutt." He winked at Finn again. "My mom and two dads like to travel around a lot to see the families so my little brother and I are dragged along." When the server came over he looked at them and since he was on a date he didn't flirt like he usually would have. Instead he placed his order for food and drink fairly simply then gave Finn his attention again. The server looked at Finn as well, waiting to see what he would order before they walked away.

"My parents were murdered by invading alkidike and I was separated from my brother. The man who took me in convinced me we were the only survivors and treated me like his slave. When I found out he'd lied I left." Something about the idea of leaving Yael on a whim, like he'd had a choice, rubbed a raw nerve in Finn. Ilkay hadn't meant it, that much he knew, but it still just...There wasn't a time that Finn didn't grit his teeth when talking about it.

"A mutt?" Understanding flitted across Finn's features and made a little 'o'. "A hybrid. That's why you look like that." As harsh as his commentary might be Finn didn't actually mean it to be that way. He just didn't have much experience with hybrids outside of the few Oban mixes he'd seen since living in the city. "You have two fathers? Why wou-?" Finn found himself cut off by the server's arrival and without really knowing the menu Finn simply copied what Ilkay had ordered. With the addition of a basket of sweet puffs simply because a neighboring table had them and the smell was getting to him.

"That explains it a bit more. I don't think I'd have stayed either." Ilkay wasn't offended by the harsh explanation. He was actually one of the more understanding of people's feelings even if he didn't personally experience them. "I hope you are enjoying Oba a lot more." Of course anything had to be better than that, right?

As Finn realized that he meant hybrid Ilkay smiled and nodded. "Yes, that's why I look the way I do." The interruption with the server only made him grin but once the server was gone he placed his elbows on the table and propped his chin up in his hands. "I have two fathers and a mother. My parents are a happy threesome." Most people either found it fascinating or disgusting so he was curious to see which Finn would fall into. "My mother loves both my dad and my brother's dad so they all stay together." While only one of the men was his biological father he viewed the other as his dad too since he had been around since before he was born.

His eyes went to the side as he watched the server come back with their drinks. He said his thanks then motioned for Finn to take his. "I hope you like it."

"I'm actually planning on leaving soon. I just need to train more." Finn wasn't sure exactly where he was going, or how since he barely made enough to cover expenses, but Oba hadn't been good to him. Certainly not good enough to stay. "This...hasn't been terrible, though."

The concept of having more than one partner caused Finn's lip to curl. Though, not in the way that some likely did. "I can't imagine having to feed one other person let alone two partners and two kids. I don't know why she would choose that." The potential for higher earnings was definitely greater, but so were expenses and that was what Finn couldn't wrap his mind around. Just being around Tac and having to spend some of his coin on shared things like tea kettles and chairs was enough to stress him.

Then again maybe it was different if you hadn't grown up replacing meals with sucking minerals off rocks.

At first Finn perked up thinking their food had arrived, but when it was just the drinks he couldn't help scrunching his face like a child. Still, he took the drink and gave a sip. "You're paying, right? That means it's good."

He took notice of how Finn perked up but seemed to deflate when he realized it was just drinks. "Actually.. we never had to worry about money. My mother has a decent trade and both of my fathers are able to do things for money." And he earned a good bit in fights sometimes.

The comment about the drink tasting better because Ilkay was buying made him chuckle a nod. "Its always better when someone else pays, that's true." His eyes went to the side again, this time catching sight of the server bringing their food. Now Ilkay leaned back and took his elbows off the table so that he wasn't being rude. "Just take your time though, no one is going to steal it from you. I promise. And if they try I'll hit them." He didn't want his date to accidentally choke on his food or get an upset stomach.

After the server put the food down and left Ilkay nodded to Finn. "Enjoy."
