New Year, New Me

Solo or RP Format
Counts as 5 RP growth Points
Solo word minimum is 750, RP post minimum is 7

Another year has passed in Tendaji, meaning a new opportunity for the residents to accomplish their goals and dreams. Typically, this is a time for setting promises to oneself and others on what to do in the year ahead. There are many different superstitions on how to make a New Year's Wish: some toss their written wishes into the sea, others will burn them at a shrine, and even more will whisper them to representatives of the gods.

No matter how one goes about doing it, all will take the time to ensure that their wishes and promises have the best chance to come true in the New Year.

[ What is your character's promise for the New Year? Go about their practice of setting their goals and dreams in the way they feel is most important. Maybe they go to the shrines, or wish under a star, or honor the god(s) they follow. The goal of this World Event is to make a wish for the next year however your character chooses fit. ]

Hyten stepped off of the wagon and stretched into the chill of the winter air. It didn’t get that cold in Tale, but still the temperature difference was noticeable. Hyten and his family had just started their travels for their father’s fabric business. They were almost always on the road, but with the holidays they had stopped at their home in Tale to take a break and enjoy the time with family. His mother’s family was still in Tale, having lived there for as long as Hyten could remember. His mother was half shifter and half leaf earthling, and she had a sister who lived in Jauhar with her family, though they didn’t see them much. Maybe they would go and visit them this time, Hyten thought to himself as he bounced off of the wagon’s steps and onto the sandy ground. He did like when they made their trips to Jauhar, though his Auntie Aminah’s kids were all grown up now. His Auntie Aminah had married an Alkidike lady and they had three kids all the same age. He tried to think back but he didn’t think he had ever met all three of them. They were much older than Hyten and had moved into their own houses by the time he could remember that far back.

Hyten was nearly eight now with his birthday right around the corner. He thought about what being an eight year old would mean. Well, for one thing he would be a little older so he would have to be bigger for his sister. He would have to take on more responsibilities with the family. He nodded his head to himself as he thought. Eight year olds were big kids as far as he was concerned. It was like being halfway to being a grown up. Maybe he would talk to his dad about what kind of responsibilities an eight year old had. He would know, his dad knew so much. He had been almost everywhere in the world.

Hyten walked along the path with his family farther behind him, deep in thought. They were going to visit the temple today. It was something his mother had them do every new year. They had to give thanks for what they had and pray for good fortune for the future. That’s what mom said at least. Hyten didn’t know of life any other way so he didn’t know whether praying actually did anything, but if they didn’t pray and bad things happened it would be awful.

They reached the temple and each took a hold of a large leaf from the special tree in the center of the building. It was a special kind of tree, his mother had explained to him. It had the power to make their wishes come true. All you had to do was write your wish on the leaf, and then string it back up and tie it to a branch. His mother had explained that over time the leaf would wilt and fall to the ground, but it would become food for the tree and make bigger and stronger branches. The tree would be fed with their wishes and become powerful energy for the tree. It was super cool and magical.

Hyten took a long look at his leaf, thinking about what it was that he wanted to wish for this year. Last year he had wished for a quhar, but his mother had explained to him afterward that the wish didn’t work like that. It couldn’t make physical things appear like a present, it could only bring good intentions and good feelings to their lives. So this year he had to wish better. He took a hold of the charcoal they had for writing and scribbled his wish on the leaf. This year he wanted to meet new people and go exploring. Nice people, maybe kids his own age he could play with. That was a good wish, right?

He clapped his hands once and grinned, the smile spreading all over his face. He was proud of himself, it was a good wish he had decided. He took the string and wrapped it around the stem of the leaf, tying it to a branch he could reach. It was low to the ground so it would get swallowed up by the tree first. That’s what he had decided at least. It would mean that his wish would get granted faster in his mind. He skipped out of the temple and ran up to his family, they were already waiting for him.
